I tried upgrading my os to vista then decided I wasn't going to but ever since then I have been having problems with windows xp. When I boot up, I am given an option of choosing windows xp, or windows xp setup. I then have 3 situations:
1.If I choose windows xp my computer runs normally.
2.If I choose xp setup nothing happens I get a blank black screen.
3.If I do nothing I get a black screen that has one message, at the top it says windows is missing <windows root>system32hal.dll..How can I set my computer back to its normal state?
anybody know how to erase two of the three choices i get when i reboot?i get the choices xp pro (2)xp pro (3) xp pro setup.. no doubt they are previous installations and attempts! but when i reboot if i dont manually select the second "xp pro" choice it starts automatically on setup option! as you can see i am running xp pro!
I can't thank you guys enough, you have helped me a bunch. anyways i went to a website and all of a sudden my computer turned off and i tried to turn it on and it works until 5secs in it would go to a blue screen telling me ways of fixing and to use f8.
Hi, I have been avoiding shuting down my computer because when I reboot I can't always get back to my Desktop. All I get is a black screen asking me if I want to try some differnet ways to boot up, After trying all the different choices the only way that works is "Last Known Good Configuration ( your most recent settings that worked)" Then finally after that I get the desktop with this error saying RUNDLL error loading C:PROGRA~1MYWEBS~1ar1binF3SCRCTR.DLL. What ever that means? Then it says The specified module could not be found ok.
All of a sudden the other day my OS (Win XP Pro, SP II) froze shortly after bootup. I was able get on Firefox but the mouse froze on the XP screen when running any HD application. Ctrl-Alt-Delete didn't free up the mouse, and doing it twice got no response.Earlier, I couldn't find any conflicts on the Device Manager.I changed my mouse connection from USB to Serial, but that made no difference...This AM, Windows booted up OK, but the screen froze right after a few tray & desktop icons had loaded. Ctrl-Alt-Delete still didn't function for a shutdown...Strangely, the Num-Lock light and the mouse underside red beam stayed on after shutdown.
Hey, basicly my old Hard drive for some reason or another died. I got a second hand one off a friend which I beleive and he beleives to be allright. = Baracuda 7200 .6 160gb HDD IDE... Obviously when starting it gets stuck on Error loading OS.. So I restarted went into boot menu and placed CDDrive as no1 boot. Placed my XP disk in... it went through the stages: Press any key to boot.Setup is inspecting your computers hardware configuration now on the blue screen of "Press f6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver that passes by what should appear next is sposed to be a screen saying "press enter to install windows xp or R to repair," but that doesn't load up instead I am stuck with.
I was recently issued a new laptop at work and after a few pushed updates from our IT department, I discovered that everytime I boot I now get a strange screen just after the Windows logo but before the login prompt. The OS continues loading about 5 seconds after this message is displayed. I've contacted our IT department but they don't seem to know either.I have a strange feeling it was caused by a failed update. Judging by the spelling mistake in the message and the timing of the error, my guess is that it originates from a 3rd party driver/software. It is interesting to note that when booting up in safe-mode the error screen does not present itself. This further makes me suspect a driver of some sort. There are also no related errors in the Application or System Event Logs.
My pc starts to load windows xp then i get a black screen and nothing happens,i got over this last night by hitting f8 and using debug mode but tonight nothing works.
Tonight, when I just open IE and Outlook Express, all of a sudden, the screen turned black with a message, 'Time is running out', in the middle of the screen. Then the computer halted and I needed to reset the computer to restart the computer. Does it mean that it is time for me to change to a new harddisk or it is of some other problem?
I am having a problem with my computer whereby I have a screen before my computer begins to boot and this screen used to show for about 3-5 seconds then disappear. In the last couple days this screen has been sitting there for anywhere up to 5 minutes before the PC even reaches the loading XP screen
Hi there. I was wondering what the procedure is to deactivate the Logon screen during the bootup stage of Windows XP. I currently have no password set, and don't wish to have one either.
How can I change the resolution of Windows XP bootup screen? i.e.The screen of Windows XP logo with a blue moving bar(Change from 640x480 to a higher resolution)
I run ScanDisk on a locked drive eg the drive with my op system and it suggests I run it at bootup, the bootup fails (and there is no Scan)- after the initial beep and basic b&w info, the screen just goes blank (no mouse pointer etc) - the red light flashes away on my PC box indicating a lot of hard drive activity though, but I've left it half an hour and it's got nowhere. Exactly the same happens if I instruct my anti-virus program to do a boot-time scan (Avast). My only recourse is to press F8 at bootup and select Start with Last Good Configuration and I can get back into Windows.
When I turn my computer (HP s7527c Desktop) on it only boots to the HP Administrators screen. There is no password required. If I click on the icon it only reloads the same screen. Can anyone explain what is wrong? If I click on F10 (PC Recovery) during bootup the computer works ok after the recovery process is complete.I have only had this computer less then a year and I cannot find any answer on the HP site or from their support.
Every time I boot up I get a blue screen that says I have a a disk error, but I can cancel the test. If I let this run and let it start testing, It responds with "unspecified error" after a second or two. I have manually run the disc checking on all HDs. No errors found. Is this some kind of a joke, a virus, or distraction so some malware can load?
When I upgraded my computer from 2000 to XP Home Ed., the guy at the store installed a new motherboard, and then installed the XP. He spelled my last name wrong, and now everything in the registry with my name is spelled incorrectly. I want to be able to fix that. Also, I would like my computer to bypass the welcome screen when it boots up.I had it set up to do that, but then I did something to cause it to go back to that screen, and I can't get the bypass to happen again.
This is really starting to aggravate me. I fixed a computer for a guy by re-installing Windowx XP on it with Service Pack 2. He installed Service Pack 3 after I specifically said "DO NOT INSTALL SERVICE PACK 3!!!". Anyways, it started acting funny so I have it back. Now when it starts up I get a black screen full of zeros on it right after the Gateway screen. I am trying to put a fresh copy of Windows XP on it, but all of the writing is jumbled and the zeros remain. Anyone experience this and know how to make it display correctly again? Everything looks fine once it gets into Windows or on the Gateway bootup screen, just the "dos" screens have zeros on them and I cannot do anything with it like this.
I tried to install XP in my computer, but wanted to check if disc would run first as my machine is pretty old, so done it from startup with the disc and it stalled and wouldnt install XP But now at startup i have to choose windows2000 or XP setup at startup and it automatically chooses XP install,I have to watch startup to change the choice every time
Dell inspiron 1000 2.2 celeron 256 ram 40gig Win-xp.the machine had recovered from serious error. Upon rebooting the windows program would not load and the hard drive made a clicking sound. I went into setup and no value was set for the hard drive. then the clicking stopped for no apparent reason and i got the windows to load. i went on line for about an hour then the clicking noise started again and the unit shut itself off and tried to reboot on its own. again i went to setup and no hard drive was detected. I did nothing but look around in the setup and again the clicking stopped on its own. the windows loaded again and i am online just now creating this message. Usually the cooling fan would be running alot, however i did not hear it running at all since the blue screen.I have had numerous blue screens. the online search always points to the Sonic Record Now as the culprit but offers no solution.
The subject speaks for itself.Do the f8 thing, see all of the drivers load, see the sptd.sys message and then shazam reboot and into the choice screen again. I tried all 3 safe mode choices and nada.
I have 2 hard drives that each have an installation of windows xp on them. I was wondering how I can make it so I have a choice of which hard drive I want it to boot to without having to unplug one drive. I have two SATA drives.
In the past, I have used the S-video port (with RCA adapter) in a dual view setup with my TV. I recently reinstalled Windows XP and now I can't get the secondary display (the TV) to work correctly. I just get a bunch of black & white lines moving up the screen (looks like bad reception/static on a TV). The weird thing is that the TV displays everything fine during the bootup process, including the loading screen with the Windows XP logo. Full color and everything. It's when Windows actually starts that the TV freaks out. Another weird thing is if I use nVidia's TV setup Wizard and select "Span," the image on the TV actually stabilizes. But I am forced to keep a low resolution on the monitor (which wasn't the case before I reinstalled XP), and as soon as I make any other changes the TV goes back to freaking out.
I had Windows XP Pro on my computer, but I decided to install Fedora on my machine as well. What the problem is, is that when I boot up, my computer boots directly into Fedora (there is a few seconds where fedora will ask you to press a key to enter a menu to select which OS to use, but if you don't press anything it will go right into Fedora) but I want it to boot directly into Windows.
When booting up XP Pro it displays the name of the previous owner of the laptop. How do I change this to my name at bootup. It didn't work by going to Control Panel and changing user names.
When I boot up I have like 19 processes, sometimes 18. I am wondering what other TSG members have on their startup? How many processes, maybe even what are they, or even how many MB do your process take up? I would make a poll but the poll only has 10 options. Maybe I will make a poll after I find out how many I really ought to have. heh. 18..I am thinking that is way more than I need at all!
For some reason my system keeps hanging when booting up on the windows splash screen, then when i try to start it in safe mode it hang on /System32/Drivers /mup.sys . The problem started when i switched the case of the computer due to the power button beeing fauty. There has been no update of hardware apart from the case.
A friend of mine asked me to look at his computer, after he was noticing a significant slow down in system processes etc. Its a 3 yr old Dell, 1.79gHz with a 30 gig HD and 256 megs of memory, running WinXP Home Edition. He never really knew much about computers, and as I discovered, he hadn't run his virus checker in almost 2 1/2 years, so that was certainly a dead giveaway that he was having problems.I managed to get AdAware and SpySweeper loaded onto it and ran them both, between the 2 programs I was able to wipe out a good majority of the cookies, the spyware and malware, however when I rebooted, the system immediately slowed down as soon as the desktop appeared and then ground to a halt entirely. The mouse moves, but that's it. I'm unable to Ctrl+Alt+Del, in order to shut it down I have to unplug the power cord, since it doesn't have a reset button.
I haven't yet been able to run HiJackThis! on the computer, I'm hoping running it in safe mode might afford me the ability to do that, but since I'm unable to decipher what it says, I'm going to be needing assistance on that level as well.
I am having problems updating Norton Antivirus 2005. Symantec says I need to having Acctmgr running upon Bootup. Using Msconfig, I do not have Acctmgr as an option to check in Startup and viewing Microsoft Services, I see nothing pertaining to Acctmgr I could check. Am using XP Home with SP 2 Installed. ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO HOW I CAN ACTIVATE ACCTMGR UPON BOOTUP?
I have upgraded all of our pcs to SP2 (WinXP). Since then only some of the pc's exhibit issue. SVCHOST maxes at 100% for 5-10 minutes on bootup then resumes normalcy. I've narrowed it down to the Internet Connection Firewall causing the issue (if I kill it the prob. goes away). I need to have this enabled. (Besides, why is it only happening on some machines and not others?)
