Jul 13, 2005
I have moved a long distance away and am trying to get remote assistance working. I have xp prof. and he has xp home. We are trying to connect through windows messenger. We both wm 5.1. We both have windows firewall on but allow exceptions. Windows messenger is checked in exceptions. We both are on Verizon DSL I have a linksys router and he has Verizon modem/router combo. We both get a messge that states that "cannot resolve host name" I cannot find anything about the message in microsofts knowlege base.

I was trying to connect to another computer using remote assistance. I have XP prof. and the other computer has XP home. We were getting a message about not being able to resolve host name. After disabling firewalls and setting up port triggering for 3389 we cannot get past trying to connect. It just hangs there and goes nowhere. The other computer has XP home and is asking for assistance from a XP prof compter behind a router but has port triggering enabled for port 3389 even though it not needed.

I have 2 machines behind a Netgear router. The XP Home one can ask for remote assistance. The XP Pro one cannot. When the invite a friend to offer remote assistance link is clicked, the message "A program could not start. Please try again" appears. It comes up with the exclamation sound and the message box claims to be from Internet Explorer.I found a file called constants.js on the machine that had that message text in it...in two places. One of them is NO CHANNEL,and the other is NO Recession I edited the constants.js file and it changed the "A program could not start. Please try again" message so that I could tell that the NO CHANNEL message is being sent to me.

My question concerns Remote Assistance (RA) vs. Remote Desktop (RD) to XP Pro desktops. Providing tech support, I am trying to see if anyone knows how to setup RD session I initiate to a Windows XP Pro OS to "share" sessions with the end user, other than via RA.

When my Mom proffers an invitation for remote assisance using MSN Messenger 7.0 she recieves the following: "Remote Assistance cannot connect because <user> denied the request for help". I've looked at some of the other, similar, threads posted on connectivity issues with 7.0 in these forums, but nothing seems to help. We can send and recieve each others video and audio. Also, the games work. I've tried to do this with a couple of other freinds with the same result. Before we were forced into the 7.0 upgrade there were no problems.
I've checked my settings to allow RA, reinstalled 7.0, tried using Windows Messenger, and have tried doing this with my firewall (ZoneAlarm) disabled.

Tying to access each others computer using Remote Assistance through window messenger .When I invited her, she was able to accept and see my computer. We would log out and then she would invite me I would accept but I was unable to log into her computer. It would not connect. We turned off the firewall that did not work. Turned off the virus protection that didn't work. Check for file sharing in the firewall all was checked. she can connect to me. But I can't to her. Is there something else I need her to look for that is stopping me from connecting.

I am trying to conned to a novice computer. Both of us are using Win XP Home. I am on Road Runner cable and the novice is on Comcast. He does not have a firewall other than the built-in one and we have tried it with this disabled. He does NOT have a router or wireless system. He only has the cable modem going to his computer. I am behind a router and have windows firewall disabled. From what I have read it should make no difference that I, as the one responding to the email invitation, am behind a router. What are the possible causes and solutions for this common error about "host name not resolved" when the inviter (novice) is NOT behind a router?

Is there anyway I can dial into a friends computer from mine? We both have Windows XP and she is having a simple computer error that I KNOW I can fix if I had access to her computer. She lives too far away for me to go to her computer, and I do not want her to be ripped off by calling a repair shop. But she cannot grasp the steps I am giving her to fix it.

I am a tech in a service department for a company. We have used Remote Assistance successfully to assist our customers to fix problems from our desks We've found it somewhat problamatic trying to navigate our customers through the request assistance dialog so we can see what they see or take control so we can do something much faster than it would take for them to do by instruction. Is there a way to initiate Remote Assistance w/o the customer having to request or invite you?

I have recently had to reinstall my PC from scratch. I bought a new WD Raptor 150GB as my main hard disk, my old 320GB Hard Disk that I used for my old install has been plugged into the second SATA port, and I have a 500GB Western Digital MyBook for extra storage and backup.Recently the new setup has been acting up worse than the old setup. These problems aren't regular but they occur in clumps -for example I would have to restart the system at least 4 times before I get a stable platformproblem includes the error message of General Host Services Has encountered an error etc along with the option to send an error report.
Sometimes its different programs that crash, including NOD 32, Media Center Receiver Service, CLI (which I think is something to do with my sound card) and other random programs including HMI, SVCHOST. When one or all of these programs crash one after the other, the entire system slows down and becomes practically inoperable. Invoking task manager doesn't help either as it takes a good 10 minutes to appear.

My mom has an IBM PC which recently had to have the HD replaced. When we got it back we had a brand new HD with a new install of XP Professional with SP 2 (old HD had XP Home edition only).
The computer connects to the internet via a dial up link only. The computer works fine except that I notice after we have been on line for a time e.g. > 1hr or so, all of a sudden with no warning we seem to loose ability to resolve URL names when trying to connect to websites. In Firefox we get the message in the bottom of the Firefox display ''looking up www.abcde.com'' and then after a while the message that the web site can't be found. IE has a similar issue and appears unable to resolve the URLs to IP addresses and trying to ping a URL (e.g. ping www.yahoo.com) produces an error message indicating the address can't be found.
I checked the IP config info and when this problem occurrs I find I am still able to ping the DNS server's IP address without a problem from the computer (so the basic connectivity appears to be still there), yet I'll still get the message in browser in the end indicating name resolution failed. When I check the stats on the connection properties while I am trying to connect to a web site the bytes sent/recieved counters do increment indicating something is going back and forth between the computer and the ISP and no excessive amounts of errors are reported.
Sometimes the problem occurs after an hour or so of surfing, other times we'll be connected and surfing without a problem, but we logoff for a while leaving the computer running and then come back, logon and find this name resolution problem has cropped up again and it's impossible to resolve URLs again until a reboot.
The only fix is a reboot. Logging off and logging on and/or disconneting/reconnecting the dial up link has no effect unless a reboot is performed first. Once we reboot, we can connect and surf again with no problem.
On the computer we have one account set up with admin privelidges and 2 user accounts. The problem occurs on all 3 accounts and once the problem starts occurring changing accounts doesn't make a difference (without a reboot).
I checked the system log for error messages while this problem was occuring and nothing showed up in the system log.
I would appreciate any suggestions as to where I should look next. This problem only occurred after we got the computer back with the new hard drive and new OS installed, prior to that the problem never occurred on the old hard drive with XP Home edition. I was thinking of looking for a sniffer freeware/shareware program to see if we could determine what exactly was going out over the wire and coming back when this problem starts to occur, but since we only have dial up access downloading software is a pain.

You may be a victim of counterfeiting ! My sons 2nd hand pc running XP is getting boxes with this message (You may be a victim of counterfeiting) there is also a 5 pointed starlike icon in the system tray which gives a yellow box with the same message ,when you switch on the pc there is a 16th screen box bottom right corner same message ,when you log in a 1/4 screen box comes up same message with buttons to resolve now(?) and resolve later, which by hitting resolve later allows you to log on and the pc seems to work fine.
It does appear to be from MS,anyone else encounter this? Whats the story? As well an unrelated occurance ,on the forum index for this thread when I run my mouse over the forum topics and get the little hint box that tells you a bit more I am getting in amongst the words (are you ready for this?) swastikas??? I do have a Japenese font called Kagijuuji that has swastika like symbols and it looks like one of these.
