I just did a fresh install of XP on my new PC and now, for some reason there is no sound coming out of the speakers. It worked before I did the reinstall. The digital sound is built into the Gigabyte mobo and I made sure I reloaded the drivers. Everything looks okay in the Device Manager. I've looked at everything I can think of, but I can't get the sound to work. When I plug in my USB headphones, they work fine. I keep thinking it's something simple I'm missing.

And it changed my error. Now I get a message from InstallShield. It says: "InstallShield Self-Extracting Exe This file is not the correct size, or is corrupt, and is unsable. OK"
View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter a marathon problem with Windows not booting, I did a clean install on another hard drive. Now, one of my PCMIA ports (on the side of my IBM A31 Type 2652 laptop) doesn't work. Both were working fine prior to my boot problems and subsequent reinstall. One port still works, but I need to be able to use both for 1. a wireless card and 2. a USB 1.1 to 2.0 conversion card that I use when I print, etc. I've done Windows troubleshooting for drivers, etc., but Windows (as usual) found no problem.
We have Levine/Young The Complete Reference-Windows XP. Reading through before I did the clean install, I noticed a mention that sometimes this happens when XP is reinstalled, but there is no solution to the problem mentioned. I'm at a loss to getting both ports to work. I need a solution before the weekend is over.
A few weeks ago, I received a blue screen of death that would not get off my computer. I had the Windows Antivirus Pro Virus that would not go away. I am going to school tomororw and needed this off my computer. So I decided to wipe the hard drive clean with the Dell CDs that came with this purchase. I downloaded Windows XP and some of the drivers. Some of the drivers that i tried to download say they downloaded but then do not come up. Broadcom440x10/100 is saying the network cable is unplugged, I have no idea what that means and internet will not work. What can I do manually to make this work?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI think that the recovery disk that come with the computer is damaged in some way. When I reinstalled XP Home, since I bought a new motherboard, there would be files that couldn't be copied to the computer. Everytime I reinstalled it, there would be different files that would not copy.
View 4 Replies View RelatedCouple weeks ago my friends computer got blue screen error message and we called Dell and they sent us a DVD:
Operating System - Reinstallation DVD Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Version 2005 with Update Rollup 2.
With one of user help i was able to reinstall Windows from DVD. I can not connect to internet through cable.
or I can not turn the wireless adapter on ( F2 button) Or when i try to play sample music with Media Player it gives an error message - Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.
I recently had to reformat and reinstall windows xp due to a virus, which i have done several times before, but not on this computer (bought it refurbished less than a year ago), and have never had a problem doing so..But this time, when I reinstalled windows, on start-up my (hi-speed) internet connection didnt work (no icon on bottom right bar), same with my sound card (also no icon).
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently reinstalled windows XP home edition to counteract a virus. Everthing's working fine now from what I can tell, except sound. the troublshooting provided by windows so far hasn't turned up anything and the updating from windows' site hasn't helped either. my control panel says that only my usb device is being read although the speaker system is hooked up exactly as before.

View 14 Replies View RelatedYou see my cmd is working fine. Then one day I open run and type in cmd and then enter. I type in ipconfig and it says ipconfig isn't an external command or something like that. Anyways I fixed the problem by typing in run C:WINDOWSsystem32cmd.exe and enter. Weird enough it worked when i typed in ipconfig, and other commands. If I typed in cmd that was open from the run any commands wouldn't work. I tried creating an shortcut from the actual cmd file and trying commands but it still doesn't work. Well sometimes I code stuff or download .bat files because I need of em. And I try to open the file but it always usually runs fine but after that incident I try to open any .bat file and it just opens it and the window closes so fast. I don't know how to fix this problem uahghhh it's a pain in the butt lol. It's getting me so mad! I just want to use my normal cmd .

View 10 Replies View RelatedOk so I have a OEM version of XP home from a old dell that is being replaced by my new build. Is it possible to use the reinstall disk to put xp on the new rig? I have heard that the OS will look for tags in the mobo bios and won't install if it can't find them.If it won't work would an upgrade version of xp work. They are cheaper but need verification that you own a copy of a MS operating system, could I use the OEM xp for verification. If none of this will work is there anyother way to get around buying a full version of xp home? I don't want to spend $200 on the OS if I can avoid it.

All things were fine and I had XP pro and XP home installed and working on seperate drives. I have just reinstalled XP pro and now on booting, no option to choose either operating system appears. I have done some searching and have seen references to copying a boot file from the CD and placing it into the XP home operating system to fix this. The instructions were not that detailed and not directly related to having 2 XP installs. nearly all search results I have found related to Xp dual booting with Vista. I have been thinking of now copying ALL the files from the XP Home operating system into the new XP Pro and then reinstalling the XP Home system. Sigh. I cannot use the system repair/recovery option as I do not know the Admin password. where did I put that? Is there an easy fix to get the dual boot working again?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI left in a hurry yesterday and forgot to close some programs (specifically, Outlook 2003) and run a full virus scan. When I checked the computer this morning it looks like Windows XP had reinstalled itself! The items listed below are all DIFFERENT than what I normally see on my computer. To wit:
1. My Desktop was totally rearranged; all the icons were placed on the left side of the screened and arranged in alphabetical order.
2. A pop-up window appeared that sayed something like Setting Preferences and proceeded to set preferences for such things as Outlook Express (which I never use), etc.
3. Control Panel was no longer in Classic View.
4. The Taskbar was rearranged and the Quick Launch bar had disappeared.
5. The Start panel showed only IE, Outlook, MSN, Windows Media Player, Windows Messenger, Tour Windows XP, Files and Transfer Wizard. This is usually what the Start panel looks like with a new Windows XP installation but is nothing like what my Start panel looked like the day before!
6. The Language Bar was showing.
7. All Folder views were showing as icons. I previously had all my Folder views set to display Details.
8. The Event Logs seemed to be missing. The System Log showed no log entries after 5/29/2008. The Security Log had ONE entry (Audit) dated 7/21/2006. The Application Log had no entries dated after 5/15/2008!
I did a full virus scan using PrevX and BitDefender. No malware showed up. Finally, I decided to do a System Restore back to a restore point taken on 4/28/2010 (two days ago). Everything now looks as it did BEFORE I got onto the computer this morning.
My computer wasn't working right, so I re-installed Windows XP with the
CD-ROM that came with the computer. After I re-installed Windows XP, all my files and programs have been deleted, and everything went to the lowest performance(meaning stuck in the 640x480 resolution and the 16-bit color)I am unable to change the resolution even by doing what the trouble shoot tells me to do
I am having problems with IE7 crashing. I have run all spyware and adware programs, I even uninstalled them as well as some other programs that I thought might be causing problems. I disabled the shell extensions that were not Microsoft or Windows IE.
I monitor calls on a site--I call up popups that contain the calls--I go along fine and then out of no where the windows freeze up and I cant get out. Then i get the "IE needs to close"I have been working on this site for 3 years now and never had a problem. I do this at my day job too and I haven't had any problems. I am running Windows XP, Serv Pak 2, IE7 and Bellsouth DSL FastAccess Extreme
Any idea what I could do next? Please let me know
Thanks

I recently reinstalled XP home on my Dell Dimension 8250 and now it won't see my Actiontec GT704-WG modem.
Modem/router working just fine, am wireless online with it on my laptop right now, all lights green.
Have checked TCP/IP and DNS to automatically detect in settings IE will not let me log onto router w/ "dslmodem" or "192.168.0.1" I get "The page cannot be displayed".When I run a repair connection on my "LAN or High-Speed Internet" I get the following message: "The following steps of the repair operation failed: Renewing the IP address. Please contact your network administrator or ISP." Device manager says network adapter is working.Have tried many, many fixes recommended on various sites and forums where problem was nearly identical, but to no avail.Have tried setting up a separate broadband connection via the connection wizard and get "Error 678" for my attempt.Have rebooted, redownloaded drivers etc. and am seeing yellow question marks on Device Manager for Ethernet controller, Multimedia Audio Controller, PCI Input Device & Texas Instruments RNDIS Adapter. I downloaded the ethernet driver from dell (orange light on ethernet cable when plugged in), but the update driver utility would NOT see/find the file no matter where it was downloaded to. Switched the router to USB cable instead. Router shows green light with either when in use. Have rebooted and replugged everything MULTIPLE times in varying order.
