Non-Administrator Users Cannot Print
Jun 24, 2004
As the Administrator on my home PC, I can print everything and anything, but none of my Limited account Users can print. They can see the printer and it shows that they are connecting to it, but nothing will print as long as they are logged in as a Limited User.

I changed my domain to a workgroup and now I cannot log in with the users name and the administrator password has been changed from the default. No one knows what the Admin password could be... Is there any other way to log in?

Some of our systems got their default mail client reset to Outlook Express. Most of our users use Outlook, with a few using Thunderbird. It seems that only an Administrator can reset their default mail client through Internet Options.I came across article from Microsoft that says that only an Admin can change this after an admin sets it.I find if very hard to believe that our users cannot set their own default mail client after an admin sets it once. Does anyone know how to reset this so users can select their default clients

I have a Windows XP Pro SP2 PC on a P2P LAN. The PC is also running Norton Antivirus 2005.Also on this LAN are several networked printers, one of them being a new HP OfficeJet 7310xi All-In-One printer. This printer is connected directly to the LAN and provides networked printing and scanning to the PCs on the LAN. I have two Windows 2000 Pro PCs and a Mac OS X printing and scanning to that OfficeJet without any problems From the XP box, I can print to the OfficeJet as long as I'm logged as the local administrator. When the user logs in with her user account, she is unable to print. Her jobs get stuck in the queue, labeled "Error - Printing."

I have a family PC running XP Home with six user accounts. All are administrator accounts and I prefer to keep them that way. The PC is firewalled and has AV and anti-spyware SW and I try to educate my family in safe computing practices.
My problem is that the 8, 11, and 15 y-o boys keep screwing up each others accounts (on purpose) by changing each other's passwords, or changing them to limited accounts. My 11 y-o for example, thinks his 8 y-o brother should not be allowed to install "Sponge Bob Whatever"; so he changes his account to limited. (Somehow he thinks it is ok though to install Limewire or Bearshare even after I tell him not to).Is there a way in XP Home to give users "Power User" privileges which will allow them to do most everything administrators can do, but not be able to access other user accounts?

I write a file in Word and then save it.Before I print it I usually go into Print Preview just to check things out. This time however it just showed me a blank box and the printer would not print.Everything was OK for a complete day and then the problem happened again - blank preview and no printing. This time switching off for 10 minutes and then back on had no effect.I have been trying most of today to correct things without success. I then copied it onto a floppy, put the floppy in my friends PC - same result as before

I previously owned a Lexmark Z25 printer and up to a certain point, it was printing ok. Then it abruptly stopped printing any pages. It sounded as if it was getting the signal from the computer, but nothing would print. Rather than buy new cartridges, which would have cost more than a new printer, I bought a Dell 720. Now, the color prints fine, but I cannot get the black to print. The cartridges are just about full with only a small amount out of the black cartridge.

To use this setting, type the fully qualified path and name of the file that stores the wallpaper image. You can type a local path, such as C:Windowswebwallpaperhome.jpg or a UNC path, such as \ServerShareCorp.jpg. If the specified file is not available when the user logs on, no wallpaper is displayed. Users cannot specify alternative wallpaper. You can also use this setting to specify that the wallpaper image be centered, tiled, or stretched. Users cannot change this specification.

Got a problem here with a classroom full of Windows XP Pro PCs, where if I put new shortcuts into All UsersDesktop, when a user logs on they can only see the shortcut as an unknown file type which does not run. Any existing shortcuts in All UsersDesktop work ok, just not any new ones! The PC's are on a Windows 2003 Server network (with AD) and have local user profiles.

What is the best way to share execution priviledges between limited users, power users, and administrators?Say an application has already been installed by a higher priviledged user type, and a limited user cannot execute it - e.g. an ISP login software, or Spy Sweeper. Note: ISP login software lacks profile, so I suppose I could just create that, however, Spy Sweeper is a head scratcher.Should the application be uninstalled and reinstall under All Users? How do you install an application to allow All Users to use it?I have already tried to use the "Run As" right-click Properties w/Shift key approach and that does not work.Is there an approach with regard to local security policy that would do what I want to do? How is that done? Or, is Access Control List the way to go?

All worked as normal Printer icon would print automatically with default print settings; File -Print would bring up print properties dialogue box to select options.Unhooked printer from laptop. Since reconnecting printer, the print icon button reverts to bringing up the print properties box as happens with going File - print. There is only one printer attached - it is shown in "Printers and Faxes" with a tick. There is nowhere to check it as the default printer as it is the only printer. How can I make the print icon button just do straight default prints again?

I have an old Sony VAIO (running Win Xp) that I am using a print server. The VAIO is connected to a HP PSC. The VAIO is on a wireless network along with two other laptops. One laptop is running Win Xp and the other is running Vista. Everything was working fine as far as printing went until I reinstalled the OS on the Win Xp machine (same OS). Previously the VAIO would go offline due to hibernation and so if I tried to print something from the Xp machine, it would get in the queue and get printed when I turned the VAIO on. Now the print jobs are not getting in a queue when the VAIO is offline.I don't know what I did right before and so I don't know how to remedy the problem.

Normally I reinstall windows when I run in to this problem, 9 times out of 10 caused by a virus. This time I decided to try and restore policies and get rid of the virus by hand... but I couldn't find a guide telling how to get these policies back! Has anyone created a guide or done this before? I figure if the rights can be taken away, they surely can be given back.

My P.C. worked fine for months and then suddenly wouldnt recognise my memory sticks. It won't print via the USB ports either. Power is getting through because i can charge my mp3 player and the P.C. speakers are powered vias USB. Device manager tells me the USB ports are working correctly. I've tried loads of stuff off the web but I just can't get them to work again. I even reformatted the drive and reinstalled everything, no good.

For some reason, if I log on to my account (an administrator account), then log off, none of the other users (my husband's admin. account or the kids' limited user accts) can be signed on. XP sits on the welcome screen for an unusually long time, then goes to just the user's wallpaper screen (no icons, no taskbar, nothing). Can't pull up task manager or warm boot, have to shut down & restart. I can log on any of the other accounts, and log off, and switch to mine, but not vice versa. Even if I don't do ANYTHING after signing on. So, the problems seems to be with my account settings somehow.

I have a Sony Pentium 4 and Windows XP Professional. Things were working fine up until about 3 weeks ago when suddenly the system would reboot when I tried to print. The error message would take me to the Windows Update page and tell me to update the ethernet adapter, which was erroneous as it referred to an adapter I don't have. I've tried to delete the printer, but when I open the printer folder in Control Panel the system reboots before I can delete anything. I've upgraded the driver for the printer, which is an Epson C62. I've tried a system restore

My dad runs a Quick-Basic program that does particle-physics calculations. He uses the command prompt to run the program. It worked fine on his old 486 (it printed the results when he hit cntrl+print-screen). Then he bought a windoze box with XP. The program still runs fine, you can see the results whizzing past. It's twenty times as fast. But we can't figure out how to print the results. The Quick-Basic code has print commands in it. They just don't seem to talk to the XP-based print que
