I have one of those IDE to USB cable adapters and it SOMETIMES is possible to mount an IDE drive through the USB port. I have a drive that successfully mounted through the USB port in the past but it won't mount now. I recall that even when it did mount with the adapter it was hit or miss. I would have to plug it into the USB port several times before it was recognized and came up as a USB drive.Does anyone else have experience mounting IDE drives using a IDE-to-USB cable? Are there specific drivers needed for this?
I have an old Kenwood shortwave radio that provides computer connectivity via RS232. However, my computer only has USB. Try as I might, I cannot get the USB-Serial adapter cable drivers to install correctly in XP. I have even tried additional drivers for other makes of adapter cable with the same result. There is always an exclamation point next to the USB-to-Serial Bridge and Human Interface Device entries in Device Manager and no new COM port is apparently created/opened. Trying to update or reinstall the drivers from there only gives some useless message akin to "can't find information on hardware" or "can't find software." Until this link is functional.
what the prime uses for a logical drive (just assigning it as the letter F: for example ) might be vs. Mounting the logical drive as an empty folder that supports drive paths?
And why someone would want to use one option vs. the latter? (common uses)
If I was to add a second hard drive on the same cable will I have any proformance loss with my computer? The master is a WD 80gig 8meg buffer 7200rpm and slave is Deskstar 60gig 2meg buffer 7200rpm.
I know it is possible to stop auto-mounting of volumes and partitions with Windows Server 2003 by using MountVol or Disk Part. But how do you do it in Windows XP? The options are not available in either utility.
I'd like to install my old hard drive as a slave drive on new computer but there's no middle connector on IDE cable and I can't get new IDE 'till Monday. Is it possible to connect it to Dvd drive? Sorry if this topic shouldn't be here (seeing how it's hardware question), but I'm using XP and thought someone could help.
I had to install a new hard drive on my laptop. It has windows xp. That installed ok and now I can't get my wireless to work. It says "No active network adapters". It is not plugged into the ethernet, my home computer is. I usually just get on my laptop in another room with the wireless that is built into the computer.
Have a dell xps m140, running win xp pro service pack 3. Based on your knowledge of windows xp system files and there function, i was wondering if you would know appropriate files that will need to copy. The scenario is a s follows
Got infect by a virus, virus was removed by Kaspersky. After virus removal both the 10/100 NIC and the wireless adapter, and the bluetooth have indicated that they are disconnected. However from device manager they show up as working properly, which they are not as I cannot connect to the internet and there is a red X on all three icons in the system tray. I am wondering if a system file related to network connectivity was afftected and subsequently deleted by kaspersky
I run two hard drives. C: and f:. F: is my primary and C: is the slave. If I boot from C: I can run msconfig. If I boot from F:, I cannot run msconfig without first removing the cable from the c: HD and rebooting. If I run sysedit while in the f: drive, it shows autoexec.bat and config.sys from the c: drive and win.ini from the f: drive. How can I change the autoexec.bat to run from the f: drive on boot up

After a power surge last night, I cannot bring up my cable internet. We've tried reinitializing the cable modem, restarted the computer multiple times, and tried everything else that seems logical. When we ran the command prompt c:>ipconfig/renew we got the error message:An internal error occurred: The system cannot find the file specified. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help. Additional information: Unknown media status code.
I just got a laptop running XP home & my pc also runs XP home. I want to put a lot of date files on it, & some of them won't fit on a CD. Is there any way to conntect & send them with a USB cable?
My 10 month old HP laptop with WinXP Home Edition and SP2 is connected via a USB cable to an Epson CX3200 printer/scanner. This is the only printer connected to this computer, and the only computer connected to this printer. I have 3 spyware and 1 anti-virus program installed on the computer which are updated regularly and a scan recently showed no viruses and minor (usual for this computer) cookie spyware items that were either removed or "quarantined".Until recently (about 1 week ago) printer worked perfectly. Now, the printer still works perfectly for me (I have the administrator account), but will not print anything for my wife who has a limited account. Does not print for the guest account we have either.
I am copying a hard drive from an old computer, I don't have the computer, just the hard drive. I am using an SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 adapter. The problem is, when I try to copy the files, it wont let me because it says I don't have the permission. I change the security settings and it still wont let me open the documents or files.
I have 3 computers on wired network and have to move one computer to another room. It would much more convenient to use the existing cable which would have to be coupled in two places, however I have been told that although this can be done it is not recommended, and have also been informed that it would be ok to use couplings.I would like to know if they are ok to use and what type to use.
I'm quite new to computers so this may seem like a silly question, but I thought I'd ask anyway...I'm due to buy a new computer, but I have many MP3 music/video files on my old one and want to transfer them to the new one. The thing is I don't want to do it my connecting the two PC's ( with a wire/cabel etc.), so I was wondering if there's any other way of doing it?? Could I use a disc for instance (floppy disc??)
Suddenly I cannot access IE or Firefox. A double click does nothing. I am using a Dell C-521pc with Win Xp as OS. The cable connection is OK (it glows) and I have tried all control panel operations I am aware of. I have tried RESTORE 3 times but the computer will not restore seemingly at any date. All other applications work OK and my e-mail w/Outlook Express works OK. Problem appears common to both FF and IE browzers. I am using another household computer to access this website. Any helpful suggestions will be appreciated
I have a winxp and vista laptop. I am trying to connect both together using cross cable. I configured a static IP 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 respectively for each system. I have also made sure that they are on the same workgroup. Vista laptop can ping winxp laptop but winxp laptop cannot ping vista laptop.I tried using the same OS i.e winxp it work just fine.
I joined the cable for my Internet connection because it wouldn't tie up my phone line when I was online.Since doing so I find things I'm trying to download, say Stationary for example.I keep getting this Screen looking thing with a bkue band down one side and a red circle with a red line through it at the bottom. In order to download, I have to right click and of course, nothing turns out and won't show up when I download.
I have recently bought myself a Sony Ericsson K750i and after removing the USB cable from the phone or from the computer my computer just restarts for no apparent reason. I have tested my phone on other computers and they work perfectly fine. I was just wondering if anyone heard of this before and know what it could be. BTW: I have tried it in diagnostics mode and it still restarts. I have also tried it in SAFE MODE where it doesnt restart (but it doesnt find the device either :P)
I recently installed verizon VZ Access Manager to use my blackberry as a tethered modem. Since then, I have noticed that neither my wireless nor my wired LAN connections appear in Network Connections. My connections work fine. I am using a wired LAN connection to send this. However, the connection does not appear in Windows Network Connections. According to what I've read, the connection should be automatically entered there.
