Slave Drive - No Middle Connector Ide Cable Can't Connect
Aug 12, 2005
I'd like to install my old hard drive as a slave drive on new computer but there's no middle connector on IDE cable and I can't get new IDE 'till Monday. Is it possible to connect it to Dvd drive? Sorry if this topic shouldn't be here (seeing how it's hardware question), but I'm using XP and thought someone could help.

I just installed Windows Xp on a brand new HDD. The previous hard drive had Windows 2000, and since I didn't want to lose any files I installed that drive as the slave. But when I boot the machine up. And select the slave drive, none of the files, such as pictures, word docs, etc. are there. The folders are blank. The jumper pin setting is correct because the picture is right on the label for the drive

Both wireless and eathernet cable. Using modem ok now with other laptop. Self diagnosis and tech at telco seems to indicate a problem within laptop. Couple of things came up: "Error TCP/IP adapter binding" and "TCP/IP not connected". Tech asked if I hit a keyboard key that shut it down. They referred me to Toshiba. I think I tried all the "Control Panel..Internet Connection" stuff.

I am getting an error message when attempting to connect my USB cable to my scanner. The error message is Windows could not load the installer for Image. I believe the problem might be with a corrupt file setupapi.log or Windows Image Aquisition. I have two such files and I do not know whether I am supposed to have two or not. Also, I am not sure if I can delete these files and where to get one to replace the two I have deleted.

When installing a larger main drive, how do I get the drivers copied onto the slave before I take out the main one I wonder is there a simple way of doing this, I am using Windows XP home edition, the PC is an oldish one and isn't any specific make, so I can't get any clever programs from the manufacturers site

I had to reinstall XP because of spyware issues. I saved important data on my slave drive. I reinstalled XP. Now the bios, device manager, and disk manager recognizes the slave drive but didn't assign it a drive letter. In disk manager it shows as a basic disk, NTFS, Healthy (Active), 18.65 GB,Online. When I right click the volume to assign a drive letter it is grayed out.

I have Dell XPS w 2 hard drives. the master is 80gb(NTFS).."C" drive, and the slave is 120gb(FAT32)...."F" drivethe other day, after a re-start, Windows gave me the not so friendly message "Checking file system on F...the volume is dirty...windows is verifying files and folders.......0 percent complete"now, the problem is that it took 30 HOURS! before it completed its checkup! well, so before i panicked too much, i decided to buy an external drive to back up some stuff from the slave drive. after backing up about 20 gb worth of stuff, i re-started, and it did the same thing! tho this time it took "only" 18 HOURS to do its checking! it did say that "windows replaced bad clusters in files"

I need to know if I can take a drive out of my friend's tower, and put it in my tower as a slave drive to format it, will it be a bootable drive back in my friend's tower? Or will it still read as a slave drive with no OS files? I have to do this because my friend lost his Win XP Pro SP1 disk, and all I have is a Win XP Pro disk with no SP on it, I have a separate downloaded SP1 file, but if I try to use that, it will chop their harddrive from 200 gigs down to 130'ish, like it did with my 160 gig drive Or maybe I could create a new Windows install CD with SP1 on it already.

She finally informed me today that when she installed XP (upgrade cd) to her W98SE system, that she now only has 400MB left on the drive because she started off with only a 6GB drive (I built the system years ago and that's all she needed at that time and since until XP). She just bought a new 200GB WD drive but wants to copy her current drive to the new one rather than start from scratch. Since I'm not there with 'hands on' and this lunatic is the one who will be doing this while I'm on the phone with her, I need to know if the WD cd is bootable or do I have her hook up the drive in a slave position, get to the desktop, and then prepare the drive with the cd at that point AND then be able to copy the current drive to the new one from within windows?
If the WD cd is bootable, I'm assuming the onscreen instructions will give options to format the drive and then copy it, right? I've never used the harddrive tools for any of this, but don't want to walk her through how I normally do this as I'll end up early in the game going the same route as the movie Ya-Ya Sisterhood and be banging the phone on the desktop. She's already argued with me when I told her she didn't have to jumper the drive as a slave with the new cable that came with the drive.....because she's reading the freaking instructions (the very ones she never understands in the first place, but she knows better when I'm not right in her face and within arm's reach)

I am running XP Pro on a rebuilt Dell PIII. The original hard drive is 7G, so I added a 300G slave for storage. My plan now was to change the 300G drive to the Master drive. I reformatted, booted from my XP disc & installed the OS on the "new" 300G drive. Then I switched the jumper & cable so it was in the master position.and nothing.
It starts up, tells me to hit F2 for setup or F1 to continue. When I hit F1, it goes to a blank screen with flashing cursor, but no command line

My computer came down with a nasty virus that I didn't want to deal with anymore, all the computer would do was constantly reboot, could never get to log-in. So I bought a new HD (which I really wanted anyway ) with intentions of loading new OS on the new drive and using the old drive as a slave, and after copying all the files I needed off the old drive I was going to reformat it for storage. Everything worked out fine except on the old drive I had a separate password protected admin login named Billybob where I kept all my important work files. I also used the sharing and security function to protect Billybob from access from other users. Now I can't access the files myself. I can only access the files that were in the 'Guest' profile that wasn't password protected. When I click on or try to move the files in Billybob I get the 'access denied' message. I used the HD utility program that came with my new HD and it allowed me to actually move the files on to the new HD but the files are still protected when I try to open them. Any help on this would be REALLY appreciated as I have over a years worth of technical work stuff in Billybob that I will never be able to replace.

I was messing with partitioning my hard drive. Nothing challenging, but it seemed to work. But then partition magic said the entire drive was "BAD" and had no partitions, knowing full well it had four.
My computer still worked. Then it would get to where it was restarting on its own for no reason. Then sometimes the bios recognized the master and the slave drive and loaded, but most of the time it didn't recognize either, and wouldn't load. Sometimes it just recognized one drive.
I had thought maybe the MBR was messed up. But then why wouldn't the bios recognize the drives every time. And if one drive was messed up, that wouldn't effect the bios would it

Multiple computers blue screen on him lately. the 4th BSoD-laden computer, but it's got me and the Sys Admin pretty stumped, so maybe I can find an answer here. The computer is a CSI brand with AMD Athlon XP proc & Windows XP. The problem hdd is a WD 400, and we also have another working WD 400 in another computer that I'll mention later. Both have Windows XP Pro SP2 installed and were originally in separate computers (each was the only harddrive in its comp originally.
Trying to start a computer with the problem WD 400 alone results in a blue screen error right after the windows screen (if I remember correctly...it's not long after the hdd, etc is recognized anyways), and gives the STOP error 0x00000024, and mentions some problems with the NTFS. I found that the ..24 STOP error has to do with the NTFS.sys file, but that doesn't help me much. The computer does not let me do anything after this BSoD error, and upon restart, I just get the same error, no matter which Safe/etc mode I try...it doesnt load into any of the modes.

I used Regseeker *sigh* and now my slave drive is not detected. It does not show up in the device manager list. What may I have removed to cause this? I think Regseeker backed up the registry files I deleted. I tried to restore the files and received an error...
If any more details are needed let me know.

I installed Windows Vista on a slave drive of a computer which has Windows XP as its master drive. I have now taken out the har ddrive with Windows Vista on it, but it still gives me the choice of booting from either Windows XP or Windows Vista.I edited the Boot.ini file, but it didn't have Windows Vista listed as a bootable option, so I left the Boot.ini file alone. It currently looks like this:;
;Warning: Boot.ini is used on Windows XP and earlier operating systems.;Warning: Use BCDEDIT.exe to modify Windows Vista boot options.

How do I most efficiently and with the least chance of data loss salvage the data from the partitioned hard drive? By using the enclosure or by hooking the drive up to the old box as a slave? And is the remaining OS on C: of the partitioned drive likely to cause any problems

I had an NTDLR error, so I thought I could make my corrupted hard drive a slave on another computer so I could just get my stuff that way. Unfortunately when Windows XP started, it started checking the newly added slave and it took forever and started doing all this stuff, all I remember seeing is...deleting index entry yatta yatta. I don't know what it did!! But when I got into windows, all that was there what was originally on the root drive (c:/) like unzipped, My Shared Folder, and WINDOWS. NO MY DOCUMENTS, nothing..no way to even get to my user files with my favorites, documents etc. Yet, in the disk information when I right click it says the drive is occupied with the same amount as before - 80 gigs. I tried to defrag too and the files that I can't find otherwise were being defragmented! So how can I access these files? Windows xp recovery said it could not be fixed. I need this stuff, is there any other way to get it!? It's NTFS file format.

I have one of those IDE to USB cable adapters and it SOMETIMES is possible to mount an IDE drive through the USB port. I have a drive that successfully mounted through the USB port in the past but it won't mount now. I recall that even when it did mount with the adapter it was hit or miss. I would have to plug it into the USB port several times before it was recognized and came up as a USB drive.Does anyone else have experience mounting IDE drives using a IDE-to-USB cable? Are there specific drivers needed for this?
