Laptop Takes Ages To Shutdown At Work

May 7, 2008

My boss has a problem when shutting down his Laptop at work. When he chooses to shutdown it can take up to 10 minutes for it to shutdown and he is really starting to get worked up. However, when he uses it at home it shuts down right away. Can anyone suggest a posible reason for this? His laptop is a Dell with Windows xp. I will be monitoring this thread so if you need any extra info about the problem then drop me a line.

Laptop Takes 25 Minutes To Shut Down

Jan 28, 2007

I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me out. I'm unable to shut down my laptop. It's HP branded and runs on XP Pro. What happens is that it sits or seems to be stuck on the process of "closing network connection" when trying to shut it down. It takes about 25 minutes to shut down because of this "closing network connection". I wonder if anyone might be able to tell me what may be the cause and how to fix this? If i can ask what's really happening in the event of "Closing network connection" during shutdown process?

Laptop Won't Shutdown Completely

Aug 19, 2009

All of sudden my Dell laptop stopped shutting down, or takes close to 10 minutes to shut down. This happened with no other changes or new software/hardware being installed. It appears to sync with our server fine. I use a docking station, Dell Latitude D830, and take it home with me each day. Sync occurs when I dock in the morning and when I shut down to capture and sync my hard drive and server changes on files I work on at office or home. I shut down and it locks up, I then will hit the main power button and one of two things will happen, it will shut completely down or it will start the Sync process, finish, then go to the blue screen with the Windows Shutting Down message, then stick there

Laptop Restart Instead Of Shutdown

Oct 27, 2007

I just spoke to my daughter at college who is having trouble with her Acer laptop, running XP SP2, Intel Celleron, 2GB RAM, and using Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite. When she clicks "shut down" the laptop appears to shut down, but then restarts. "Restart" is not selected. I did a Google search and found a known problem with Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.0 and with Direct CD 5.0, but as best I can tell she has neither program installed (she looked in "programs" folder, and in control panel under "add and remove programs" and couldn't find either listed). I also had her right click "my computer", "properties", "advanced", "startup and recovery - settings", and uncheck the "automatically restart" box in "system failure" section. But her laptop still restarts at shutdown.

Installation CD Does Not Work On Vista Laptop

Jan 20, 2009

In 2005, I bought a desktop PC, which included an installation CD for Windows XP. That computer broke down a few months ago, so I bought a laptop with Vista pre-installed. I have grown really tired of Vista and I would like to use XP for my laptop. So I used my old XP installation CD, but after I clicked "Install", a message appeared. It told me that the installation could not be done because the Windows system on the laptop (Vista) was newer than the XP on the CD. Can this be fixed in any way?

Shutdown 2000 Pro Twice To Shutdown Computer

Aug 28, 2003

This is weird. I have to go through the shutdown procedure twice, i.e., Start/Shut Down/Shut Down and click Ok, then Start/Shut Down/Shut Down and click Ok again. It will then shutdown properly. The same thing happens when I try to "Restart." After doing the first shutdown sequence, everything is normal. I can open programs, surf the web, etc. It's as if I never tried to shut it down at all. Only after the second shutdown procedure will it shutdown fully. One note: When I go through the first shutdown sequence, my taskbar pops up and the desktop is darkened. After clicking Ok, the taskbar autohides and my desktop returns to its normal color.I have only had this problem for the last month or two. Before that, all was fine. It's not critical since I can shut it down. It's just annoying to have to do it twice.I have Windows 2000 Pro, SP4, build 5.00.2195.

"Help" Function Wont Work Right On My Laptop

Mar 6, 2005

It all started about a month ago when my computer was running very slowly and one day. I got a message saying message saying windows have to shut down due to a critical error. So it shut down and when I tried to reboot it said windows could not run because of a missing windows directory and to run the recovery console on the windows XP CD. Well the problem was that I dont have the window XP CD just the Toshiba recovery CD which formats the drive and automatically installs windows XP.Well, so I tried using the Toshiba Recovery CD but kept on getting either a bad system partition error, it installed but when I restarted all I got was a blank screen like no operating system was installed, or that same windows directory error. About after the 8th try of using the Toshiba recovery CD I got windows installed successfully. However it ran very very very slow, even at the boot up.
