Just Installed Sp3 - Tabs They Take Ages To Load
May 16, 2008
I noticed that there was critical updates needed (XP/SP3) so i installed them and the browser was taking ages to load ( 2-5min's!) so i downloaded IE7 thinking that maby it needed that to work properly but still no success. Once the browser is opened it's pretty normal but if i open new links / tabs they take ages to load and its the same with closing them, I've been searching for quite a while for an answer but no luck.

Anyway I finally got it where the mobo would actually post and I get get into edit bios settings and stuff. My new problem is that since this has happened my windows does not load. It only goes to the screen saying it failed to load and I can choose safe mode options or normal.

I have just installed new memory, new graphics card geforce 8800gt,new power supply, and new sata hard drive.
I have made a floppy disk from the motherboard cd for installing the drivers during windows instillation from my old pc first.
I switched on new pc to load windows and i get no signal on my monitor also my usb mouse and usb keyboard does not light up,iget power to motherboard and case fans +dvd drive,i have put my windows xp os disc into dvd drive and basically it does nothing.
Do i need to make a windows boot disc or something to start instillation.
I still have windows loaded on my secondary sata hdd but the system32 is corrupt,so i have opted to install new sata hdd, then transfer my files from secondary hdd, once that is done gonna format secondary drive and use it for storage. So i still have the option of entering the bios on my motherboard if i connect it up and disconnect the other drive.
I have left the drive disconnected while i install windows then gonna plug it in after windows installation.

I have an old HP Pavilion (A300N) that I purchased at retail some years ago. It came pre-installed w/ XP and a recovery partition in order to re-load the machine. I've recently re-loaded from the recovery partition, but darn if there isn't just gigs of unwanted software on the drive that came along for the ride when I recovered. This is clearly an OEM install of XP, and there is a Windows Product Key stiker on the case of the machine.
Will the OEM product key work if I re-install XP from a retail installation CD? I would be re-installing on the same box, so same internal components, etc. Seems like this should work, but I'd like to get an opinion from the experts here before I invest the time. Having the old XP box available in a clean state is important to me for other backup and redundancy issues here at home.

To start, when I try to play an .avi file, real player and windows media player both encounter a fatal error. Thinking there may have been a windows update I went to update.microsoft.com to get updates. I was able to download all of the updates, but I could not install any of them. I tried to install them via express and custom updates on the website, via automatic updates, and virtually every other method I could think of. After researching the problem I came across similar problems with an array of solutions, including trying in safe mode, running sfc /scannow, uninstalling and reinstalling .net, shutting off and turning back on both automatic updates and cryptographic services, changing .dll files (lccwiz & pidgen), renaming the Software Distribution folder, downloading one update at a time, and other things that I can't even begin to think of at this moment, obviously with no success, as well as running SpyBot, AdAware, and Norton.

Please can someone tell me why my PC has slowed right down & takes ages to open programes? It's driving me mad. I have got AVG & Zone Alarm running, also Spybot & Acronis Spyware Shield. Even with these I still keep getting spyware & adware but because Spybot runs every time I log on I get rid of them straight away.I don't know why things have slowed so much.

However, when he uses it at home it shuts down right away. Can anyone suggest a posible reason for this? His laptop is a Dell with Windows xp. I will be monitoring this thread so if you need any extra info about the problem then drop me a line.

First my computer was cutting off in the middle of any program. I decided to delete everything on the drive and reformat it and reload windows xp. While trying to load windows xp it would load the set up but when going to load files it locked up everytime. I tried also loading windows 98, 95 and they too locked up. At one point it said I had a virus in my boot sector and at another time it said I had a virus in my RAM. I got a program called PC Beginner to help partition my drive and redo the MBR. I can partition the drive and format it but windows still doesn't load. Now I wonder if there is a problem with the mother board and I have a dual bios board, I was wonder if there is a program loaded in the dual bios that may somehow causing my problem. If so what can be done to clear the problem? How can I get windows reloaded?

I'm running XP and IE 7. I downloaded something bad (maybe spyshredder??) and it made my IE7 tabs stop working. I deleted the program and everything i could find related to it, but i can't get the tabs back. I've read thru lots of searches and forums and can't find anything to help me. I've tried many things. I did tools>options>setting tabs are enabled, but they don't work. Also did a RIES, and restarted the computer but they still don't work. I really like the tabs and want them back.

1. My desktop remains blank without any icons.
2. clt+alt+del shows all choices except task manager - so I am allowed to reboot and shutdown
3. When I enter in safe mode cannot see desktop nor icons
4. Ran Norton Antivirus 2007 boot with CD - no virus found
5.Prior to crash desktop went RED, hence I rebooted and then the issues.

When i right-click my desktop and choose properties, the panel that opens doesnt have any tabs. The weird thing, is when i click on the places of the tabs, the tab switches, but they r invisible, and much much more smaller... like, every tab is about 3-5 mm in length, aqnd i have to be accurate, click on something i cant c, with a small size.Another thing, when i change any setting, then press "Apply", the tabs r back normally, but when i reopen the panel, they r gone.

Awhile back when my computer was going cuckoo ( i think because my daughter went on that stupid kazaa infectious website!!!) Somehow pictures from a folder that had nothing to do with screensavers or wallpaper suddenly appeared as choices. Well i couldnt figure out how they got into that d.p. tab much less delete them but somehow i stumbled across a way to disable so no one could change it. well needless to say can't figure out how to enable it and was wondering how to fix it.

When I right-click on the desktop and choose Properties, all I get is a drop-down box to select a theme - no tabs for screen saver, etc. I tried the "Restore All Display Tabs" solution at kellys-korner-xp.com, didn't work. The tabs do appear if I boot in safe mode, but changes aren't saved. I've run virus and spyware scans (including the scans at ewido.net), nothing picked up.

After my kids removed a program (Sims original) we have a problem with some of our windows program tabs staying highlighted. I am not sure if the SIMS had anything to do with it but I would like to get the tabs back to the way they were. It used to be if you hovered over a tab file name, it would highlight. If you clicked on it it would stay highlighted and then return to normal. Now it is highlighted as soon as the program opens, stays highlighted when you hover over it (instead of going back to normal when you move the mouse off it again) and all the tabs will end up highlighted and stay that way until a function is completed.

Does anyone know of a way to get the file/folder properties page from a cmd prompt as though you have just gone and right-clicked the file/folder in the gui, The reason I ask is because I may have a user logged in and need to look at the file/folder properties (specifically the ntfs permissions) and because they are logged in as a user account and have no access to the folder they cannot even see the security tab of the properties box. So I need a way from the command prompt to open the properties box of a file/folder (as I have done a runas to get an admin prompt inside their user gui session. Looking at security settings in a cmd program may also be of some interest if anyone knows that either

In the last few days I've noticed IE is suddenly taking ages to close a tab or window, it seems particularly strange as my computer is only a few months old.I saw that someone else here with a similar problem had been asked for an HJT log as well as an 'uninstall' list from HJT, so *just in case* I'm including both here.
(Some terms may appear in Portuguese because I'm living in Portugal at the moment.)

I just ran into a problem with my display properties. It occurred after a virus attacked my computer and reset the desktop to a false "blue screen of death". I was able to remove it Ad-Aware SE, but once i was working with the computer again, I found that the tabs under "display properties" were missing. They included "Themes", "Desktop" and "Appearances". I already tried reinstalling XP and carefully reinstalling the ATI drivers, but i still only see the "screen saver" and "settings" tabs.

It has been about a week now and I have yet to solve a little problem with my taskbar.I've tried quite a few things to get tabs on the taskbar to show up when I open a folder or window, but all effort was in vain. I've looked in several other forums and felt that this place would provide the best answers/solutions. Reformatting is a last resort, and I want to avoid that. Can anyone help me?Problem: Nothing shows up on task bar when a folder/app/window is open. Only the Quicklaunch icons are there.e.g. Open firefox, nothing shows up on taskbar (I can right click taskbar choose different options etc - so it's not frozen) Opening Task manager shows firefox running on both the processes and application tab. So I can switch around that way. Alt+Tab also temporarily shows firefox and any other program/folder/window that is open as well. Minimizing the window causes it to disappear, so it looks like you haven't opened anything at all -but checking task manager shows the programs opened! Yet nothing shows up on the taskbar. (sort of funny since I ended up with literally 20+ windows of firefox on the alt-tab menu.

I had a version of the Fraud.c virus, and have removed it, but in the process deleted some contaminated files that I probably needed. I don't know which ones, but now I have lost three of the five tabs in my Display Properties menu box. Can I fix this wthout a repair reinstall? I still have my screensavers and wallpapers, even my themes, its just that I can't access them through the Display Properties menu box.

I am seem to be missing some of the tabs in display properties in control panel. I am running windows XP home edition. I picked up a virus and I had some other issues for a little while. I noticed when it started to infect and I pulled my internet cord in case it was going to try to get at any of my personal data. I ran my Norton 360 right away and after about an hour of running the scans and deleting some stuff, my comp started to work a lot better, but now I seem to be missing the tabs where you would change wallpaper and screen saver settings. There might be more, but I'm a casual computer user and I don't remember what the others might be Well looking at my norton history there were a few viruses:
Trojan.Fakeavalert
Trojan.Zlob times 3
Bloodhound.sonar.1
and one named simply downloader
Right now the comp seems to be working OK and all scans come back clear, so it's just the tabs as far as I know.

Windows XP Home SP1. The only tab that shows on Display Properties is Themes. Desktop, Screen Saver, Appearance, and Settings are missing. Both with the onboard Intel vide chipset and with an ATI PCI card plugged in for troubleshooting. I remember something like this several years ago, but can not find anything in newsgroup or Microsoft searches.
