Installation Failure - Updating Error 0x80242006
May 20, 2008
XP Pro Service pack 2. Version 2002. Have not been able to update for over a year. Continually says updates are ready to install (little yellow shield with exclamation point on bottom right toolbar). It goes through the install process then finally pulls up a screen saying:
Installation Failure
Error Code: 0x80242006 then says: Try to install the update again, or request help from one of the following resources. I've opened up a support request but none of their suggestions were working (install 1 at the time, etc). I went out of town, returned and they'd closed the request.

a friend asked me to install a new hard drive for him because his crashed. So i purchased a new hard drive (maxtor 60 gb) set out to partition and format the drive, using a win 98 boot disk. I partitoned the drive ( for large volume drive.) Formatted the drive ( format c: /s ) to include system files.and proceeded with Os install Windows 2000. Everything went as smooth as silk... the when install finished, I was prompted to remove the disk from cd rom and complete installation with the onscreen prompt. I removed disk, clicked finish and the computer rebooted upon loading, when it went to start windows it said DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER
I put the Win 2K disc back in and hit enter. It started windows perfectly no errors at all... then I took disk out re-started ( to check system stability) and back to the same error message: DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER. I of course freaked out, I feel like an idiot cause I cant get this thing to work right. tried reformatting without the sytem files, re-partioning tried win 98, winXP, nothing same stuff! So I talked to a pal got a hard drive wipe program off the net "killdisk", wiped the drive and tried to reinstall Win 2K, same problem.

I purchased the Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop about 2 years ago. It shipped with Vista at the time, but I installed XP on the partition Vista was installed on and have been using it happily ever since. There is a common problem as it turns out, after having read through other forums, that used to exist with Dell laptops, including mine and that is that they would come shipped with the Mediadirect button. When pressed, it supposedly boots the laptop to another partition, which would start up a multimedia software that can playback CDs, DVDs and/or other media files on the accessible storage. The critical and serious issue is that once this button is pressed and you try to turn on the laptop normally again (boot into Windows), it would not boot up, producing the Invalid partition table error at boot-up, suggesting that the former process messes up the boot record somehow.
The same thing happened to me before. A quick suggested fix was to press the button again. While it didn't solve the issue, it at least booted in the right partition, but complained about an ntfs sys file not being there. I solved this myself by repairing the existing Win XP Pro SP3 installation via an XP SP2 CD, which reverted back SP3 to SP2 without much hassle, surprisingly, and Windows booted up normally. I just had to manually update the system to SP3 again using Windows update and that was all. Other software like IE and WMP were also reverted, but reinstalled to the latest version manually.

1.laptop is hp 2590US running X Phome
2. physically hooked up KDS flatscreen to 15 pin connector
3. Device manager recognizes 3 monitors i.e. default, flat screen and plug and play
4. FYI device manager shows display adapter Radeon 1GP 345M
5. Went to display settings established 1 and 2 monitor & extended desk top
6. Advance+monitor depending on selection 1 or 2 monitor displays either default and flat screen or default and plug and play.
Initially 4 weeks ago when I started this process I did get a brief display on flat screen which leads me to believe something I am not doing. Something else I found strange and may be as it should be whether 1 or 2 is highlighted and identity is pressed only the large 1 is displayed. I have tried fn then f4 at hp's advice as well as fn then f5 which is the actual function key on this unit.

I tried with Partition Magic 8.0. It rebooted, and when the script would usually kick in, an error was displayed instead: xmnt2002 program not found - skipping AUTOCHECK and then it would boot. That frustrated me. I tried again, this time unhiding the partitions using grub before booting. Still, same error. So, partition magic was not going to work. Next I decided to try to go to the Linux installation directly, and use the YaST utility to resize my windows partition. I tried, but that failed as well. YaST gave me the "Failed to resize partition. The Installer will now exit" error each time I tried that. So, the Linux-rout failed as well.
By now I was quite frustrated. I decided to re-install Windows from the disks I had been provided, deleting the windows partition using the installation menu and re-installing it on a smaller portion of the unallocated space. Windows was installed using the same amount of space as the first installation -- It did not allow me to resize it's disk usage like I had planned. So, I lost all the software, but no matter, I reinstalled it all in a few hours, then attempted to resize my partition again...............

I just completed a reformat/reinstall on a Dell Dimension 4700 running an OEM version of Windows XP Home Multimedia Edition. I had a few driver issues, but I got them all resolved but one, and that is the Multimedia Audio Controller, which is listed under "other devices" in the Device Manager. When I run the wizard, it says it can't find the driver. I located the device by running msinfo32, and I went to the Dell site and located the driver I need (I think) which is R89530.exe.
I downloaded the driver and it only downloads about 1 Mb of a 7 Mb file. I double clicked to run it anyway, and after going through the standard process of creating a folder for it, this message popped up: "This self-extracting zip file is part of a multidisk zip file. Please insert the last disk of the set." Then when I cancel out of the download, it gives me the message, "An error occurred while unzipping. One or more files were not successfully unzipped. The error code is 190."
I have downloaded the file from Dell USA, Dell Canada, and Dell Europe, as well as from an ftp site I found on Google, which is a list of Dell compatible drivers, and the same thing happens with each download. Have you ever seen this before, and if so, do you know of any solution? I currently have no sound, except for the pathetic little beep the system occasionally makes -- nothing at all out of the speakers.

I have recently tried to reinstall some oldish games (rainbow 6, Total Annhilation) and when you select install, an error pops up:
16 bit windows subsystem
C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application. Examination of that folder shows that I do not have a file called Autoexec.nt at all, is this correct? These games have run on this PC before and the error applies to multiple games suggesting a system problem. Is there a way of repairing or checking windows to replace this file. I did get a virus recently however Norton said it quarantined it - this might have
affected windows though prior to this I had noticed no differeance.

Decided to update my XP installation with the XP2 upgrade. Everything was sailing smoothly until the upgrade halted with an "Access Denied" message. Luckily it deinstalled and reloaded the original XP1 installation successfully - I don't see any problems! If I look at the current setupapi.log, I see several pages of #E197 errors towards the end of the update (the description says, "Writing "C:WINDOWSINF etwzc.inf" to "C:WINDOWSINF" is not an approved method of installing INF files. Use a 'CopyINF' entry instead". Then I see the following:
#-007 Deleting registry key HKCR.AudioCD
#E033 Error 5: Access is denied.
#E065 Parsing DelReg section [Product.Del.Reg] in "c:windowssoftwaredistributiondownload16b2c96a0c41f4dfdb4d3cc228a4f819 updateupdate.inf" failed. Error 5: Access is denied...............

anyone that knows what I can do to fix this problem would help me out alot. I am trying to upgrade my dads computer from XP Home which he has to XP Pro which I brought for him. I go thru all the options to upgrade and the computer restarts and goes to bluescreen and gives me this message."Setup cannot find a cd-rom drive. make sure your cd-rom is on and properly connected to your computer. if it is a SCSI cd-rom drive make sure your SCSI devices are properly terminated. see your computer or SCSI adapter documentation for more info. setup cannot continue, to quit setup press F3"..I tried setting the DVD Drives to Boot first in BIOS and that did not work, I even tried removing the BIOS Battery for a little to reset BIOS and that just made my speakers work bad for some reason, now they are raspy. I just cant figure this one out, luckaly there are people out there that can teach me,

I have a Dell 2350 Pentium4 1.8 gig Running WinXP Servicepack 1. When trying to install service pack2 thru automatic updates, the installation seems to be going fine. Then, while copying new files to the computer (after backing up and setting a restore point) I get a message that says "Generic host proces for Win32 Services encountered a problem and needs to close". The file copying continues in the backround. The standard message asks if I want to send the error to Microsoft. I send it and the file copying continues. After five more minutes copying files an error message pops up:"Access is denied". The system requires a click on "OK" and the old system is restored. I have tried to install several times with the same results.

I've had ongoing problems with my 13-day old Gateway with Windows XP, seemingly due to all the updating and reconfiguring it took to get XP to work with older applications and my printer. I've received several service host error report messages, several days ago the sound stopped for no reason (uninstalling Realtek fixed that), and yesterday my backup program stopped working and my colors changed. The desktop turned from teal to yellowish green and the text changed from white to yellowish. A Gateway tech had me do "Big Fix" and nothing changed. He said I have to do a System Restore to get XP back to its original state. Tomorrow is the last day I can return my computer to the store where I bought it. What would cause colors to change by themselves?

I did a new hard drive install. When the new HD was complete I thought I would copy the data from the old drive to the new. They both still had os installed They were both connected to the system at the same time. When I finished, I removed the old drive. The new drive wouldn't boot. "Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter". After recovery disk completed, the system booted fine. I could reboot from the shutdown option.
The problem I have is when the system is shutdown completely. It requires the system disk again. It will reboot after the system disk is reinstalled. I continually get the "Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter" error message.During bootup after a shutdown, I can F2 into the bios before the error message. It will allow me to exit and then windows will boot without the error message.

I did not add any new memory to my systeme. however, I did remove my current memory to access the inside of my laptop. The fan wire had come loose so I reconnected. I fixed that problem only to find out the problem with the registry. I have chose the load last known configuration that worked correctly but it still gives me the little blue pop up screen with the error, then the restart.
I tried to use my windows xp os disk to try and repair it but it wont read the disc before the blue screen comes back up. I'm thinking of buying a Laptop To IDE Hard Drive Adapter. So, I could at least format my hard drive. I'm not sure if this would be a good idea. I went to the microsoft webpage that deals with this issue but I can not seem to find one to fix my problem.
