I have a toshiba laptop running windows xp. It crashed yesterday and now whenever it boots it give me the following error A disk read error occurred Press ctl alt del to restart.I managed to get to the selection of boot in safe mode, but it still won't boot and then I get I/O error reading boot sector.At this point I just want to get the data off it. Toshiba's recovery disk only has the option of formatting the disk and restoring the system to it's initial state (the Toshiba tech support explained that was a benefit, getting it back to the original state

When my computer goes into hibernation mode and I try to reboot, I get an error that says, "The system could not be restarted from its previous location due to a read failure." There is one option for me to select which reads "Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu."I've done a check disk of all of my hard drives, and none of them turned up anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I contantly use chkdsk and clean the registery and keep defrag up to date. Do I really need to format and reinstall XP, or is there an easier route?

"Read Failure on internal hard drive. No bootable devices -- Strike F1 to retry boot F2 for setup utlility"
and every time I attempt to retry boot by entering F1 I do am immediately brought back to the same message. Can someone please help as I am in desperate need to recover company files located on the hard drive.
my cd rw drive has a problem - the drawer stays open, if you push it in it opens by itself and it also will not read data. I have noticed the front light is yellow, should it be green?

Should I expect trouble if I make a ghost image of the hard drive on the original notebook, image it on to the new notebook and install all the drivers for the new notebook? There are a few large programs and alot of critical data and settings, so if this method works, I would like to do it this way. The old notebook will have Mandrake installed, so the XP license will continue to only be used on one computer.

A friend of mine would like me to take a look at his computer for him later. He said he is getting an error message when he starts it up that says Failure to read internal drive Press F1 to reboot. He doesn't have the exact message but that's about it. Does this mean the hard drive is bad, or is there hope that I can fix this?

error, tried that same thing so I shut down and when I turned back on it booted fine. I have since moved... just set up the system and am getting the same error except this time shutdown/restart isn't working ( The OTHER problem I realize is this... this is a tempory move! Most everything I own is in a storage unit, boxes to the back, furniture to the front and guess where my disks are? Right! I put printer, shredder, disks, everything I didn't just HAVE to have in the storage unit.
"Verifying DMI Pool Data ... Disk Boot Failure, Insert System Disk and Press Enter". It is or was running on Windows XP. It was fine one day and the next it just gave me this message. Restarting it did nothing. When I press enter it just tells me "Disk boot Failure, Insert Disk and Press Enter". Aside from that it doesn't let me do anything. I can't run it in safe mode or do anything at all. I'm not sure if it might be a virus or if something else is affecting it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy computer won't reboot. It started when I tried to update windows to sp2 and it had an error so it couldn't finish the update so it uninstalled whatever it installed. I rebooted and it goes into a loop, first the manufacture logo, the windows xp logo and it goes right back to the manufacture logo and starts that process again. I tried to go into safe mode and even the last best configuration to start and it still goes into this loop. What should I do? I don't want to reformat if I don't have too.

It is telling me: the file "asms" on windows xp home edition service pack 2 cd is needed. Type the path where the file is located and then click okay.I enter d: ( my cd drive) and nothing. it says: globalrootdevice cdromoi386 in the path line. nothing. I have read as many posts here as I can and it is stopped in the middle of the installation at 39 minutes waiting for me to become an instant genius and solve it.
