Alright this has left me without my dell for a few months now and its driving me nuts.I was trying to format my computer,and than install winxp.i wiped it,and tried installing winxp from my cd, Everytime i try to install,it says it couldn't be installed due to not enough memory left,or my disc being corrupted,it cannot be corrupted because i have installed windows xp on this computer using the same cd.

When I tried to re-install my son's game (one of those Sesame Street educational games) I get an error message saying that there is insufficient memory to run the application-- The title of the message box is "Can't run 16-bit application"; there is no error number. I have Googled for it, but the only answers I seem to get are for the autoexe.nt file being corrupt; however, my specific problem is not listed in the symptoms.

I also enabled it using my backup software but it is still not recognised. Any sudgestions?? I used to have both Nero and Instant CD/DVD installed. i am trying to install windows office 2007 but after a minute from start of installation ,it popup dialog box saying setup can not find setup.exe file and say browse valid installation source and click ok.
I don't know whats happening.I have just formated my C drive and installed fresh copy of windows xp.

I have a Dell PC. I installed a copy of Windows Vista on it. I don't like it, so I am trying to reinstall XP Home. When I click on the cd drive the XP Home CD is in, it brings up the menu, but the "Install Windows XP" option is grayed out. I try to boot from the disk, but when it is done loading all the things and I tell it I do not want to repair, but to install, it says "setup did not find any hard disk drives installed on your computer" and makes me reboot my computer. Vista still works fine, I know the Hard Drive is working
I have a major problem with my Packard Bell iMedia D815AW home desktop. Ever since I installed a Lite-On DVD-RW into it, it started making a lot of noise (a bit like the sound of a typewriter tapping) and started crashing. I removed the DVD-RW drive, only for the problem to continue. The computer kept crashing (often showing the blue crash screen, other times showing a black 'insert floppy disk' screen, sometimes just restarting itself). Running the Windows disk check utility at start-up would not work - the computer would freeze while the disk scan occured (I tried many times). I ran disk registery programs (ie- Registry Mechanic, etc), anti-virus software, defragmentation, etc. etc. but the problem remained. Yesterday, I decided I would try reinstalling (or restoring?) Windows XP again (with the intention of fixing the problem without deleting my personal files on the computer). However, upon instertion of the disk, Windows XP claimed it could not reinstall, as the Windows version on my computer was too recent. I assumed that the reason for this was that I had installed Windows XP Serice Pack 2 and so the version was too recent for the installation disk. So, I thought I would uninstall service pack 2 and then try to reinstall Windows XP. However, while uninstalling service pack 2, the computer crashed. Since then, whenever I try to startup Windows, the computer restarts after about 30 seconds of loading. I can enter the startup screen which gives you access to entering through Safe Mode, Debugging, etc - however entering through these modes has the same problem though with the computer restarting before reaching Windows. So, I entered the computer BIOS at startup and changed it to load via CD, inserting the Windows XP disk. I tried to use the 'Recovery Console' option, however the error message "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer" showed. It then asked me to restart the computer by hitting F3. I then tried to use the Windows install option by restarting the computer and loading the Windows XP disk, but the same "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer" message showed. So, i cant load the computer, nor reinstall the software. I dont want to lose all the files on my computer.

when I right click to see the system summary, it still says 502 RAM. I thought it would read 1 gig (?)
Is there something I need to do?
Do I take ut the old memory and then add two (new) more memory chips to increase the memory? Or do I just put in an additional memory chip?
I'm not sure what else I can do. My PC slowly derailed into sluggishness, and if I have more than one program open while I am running AOL, AOL runs very slow, and even grays out when I try to connect. The memory I installed has helped, but only minutely. I have plenty of hard drive space left (29gb). I run Windows XP on an HP. I'm not sure what other information you would need.
View 10 Replies View RelatedMy computer won't reboot. It started when I tried to update windows to sp2 and it had an error so it couldn't finish the update so it uninstalled whatever it installed. I rebooted and it goes into a loop, first the manufacture logo, the windows xp logo and it goes right back to the manufacture logo and starts that process again. I tried to go into safe mode and even the last best configuration to start and it still goes into this loop. What should I do? I don't want to reformat if I don't have too.

I was given this laptop as a Christmas gift as the donor received a new one on boxing day It was given to me with this error and I suspect it is from the new(er) memory installed but cannot be certain as I have no references to go on. I had enough of this reoccurring error very quickly so I reinstalled the OS clean and fully updated the system with Microsoft updates including SP2, the computer also has quite a bit of expensive software I installed and is virus free according to trend micro IS PC-cillin 2007.The memory that came out of this unit is in with the laptop bag stored in the new memory packaging, the new memory is: Times Two(2) units = KTD - INSP8200/512 (512MB Memory Module) Equiv. Dell(R) P/N: 311 - 1356 (Sodimm DDR Inspiron) whatever that means! It is telling me: the file "asms" on windows xp home edition service pack 2 cd is needed. Type the path where the file is located and then click okay.I enter d: ( my cd drive) and nothing. it says: globalrootdevice cdromoi386 in the path line. nothing. I have read as many posts here as I can and it is stopped in the middle of the installation at 39 minutes waiting for me to become an instant genius and solve it.
