there is nothing on my screen but the background. Explorer is MIA and there are no icons. Ok, I tried to use the regedit option from the explorer missing option in the sticky, but I do not have those registry keys, so that did not work.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I login into Windows XP pro following a normal boot up, within a couple of seconds the top half of my screen cannot be accessed my desktop shrinks about half way down the screen.If I load an application it only opens /maximises in that portion of the screen.However, the actual desktop background remains unchanged!
It very weird because if I login under a different user this does not happen.It seems that my screen is acting as virtual screen?I have checked the settings and nothing seems different.

View 4 Replies View Relatedi was working on a computer the other day helping someone "clean it up" and make it run faster. i did all the normal "clean up" stuff, got her back online, pc running much faster, everyone's happy.except for one thing: one of her original complaints was that her desktop background had recently reverted to all RED with this image in the middle that looks something like a biohazard logo. i tried changing the desktop background via the control panel, and it changed momentarily and then reverted back only moments later. I ran avg anti-virus and spybot to sweep her machine of any bugs/viruses (and found quite a few). when i left the red desktop was gone.

Under it there was a box that said "Click here to restore background" or something like that. When I clicked on it my background became a solid blue background. I tried changing it by right clicking, but when the Properties windows opens, the only folders that show up are the Screensaver and Settings folders. All the others are gone.I can change the wallpaper when I go to My Pictures and right click and set up as background, but the screen remains blue and you can only see the picture briefly when powering on and off

View 2 Replies View RelatedI consider myself somewhat experienced with computers in general and Windows in particular (been using computers since the DOS days), but there is a thing with windows that rather baffles me. The thing is that since some time ago, whenever I start a game or any other DirectX program in full screen it resizes all opened windows to that program�s screen resolution. Even dxdiag full screen tests seem to cause it.
Once the full screen program exits or if I alt-tab out of it, all mine previously maximized windows are resized to fit in whatever resolution the DirectX app was running but they seam to think they are still maximized (2 squares instead of one on the maximize button and I need to press it twice to actually maximize them again, and also their size when not maximized seam to be changed to the app's resolution as well I normally run my desktop at 1280x1024 resolution
it has locked me out from changing it. Initially, I was unable to access my task manager screen until I ran Windows onecare scan. it cleared up the virus but I still cannot get into my regedit (it states registry editing has been blocked by your adminstrator). View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm using Windows XP Professional, an Intel P4 with 1.0GB Ram, nVidia GeForce FX5700 graphics card. Microsoft's Windows Defender Beta 2, Nod 32 Antivirus program and eTrust's Pest Patrol are running on my PC. I also have Windows Firewall running in the background. On starting the PC and before the Microsoft XP's welcome splash screen, I get a blank window. Not always, but 99% of the time. The only way I can close this window, is to click the OK button that appears on the screen. Clicking on the red X button doesn't help close it either. Once the window closes, the welcome screen appears and then the desktop with my icons, folders, shortcuts etc. appear and all is well with the PC. Most of the time the window is blank except for the OK button in the middle. On some occasions, a single file path(different each time I start the PC - examples listed below) can be seen on the dark blue band on top of the window and occasionally, inside the window:

If I try to open My Computer to access some file or what not, instead of bringing me to the list of drives, I get a blank white space. It never loads. From here, I can Cntrl Alt Delete and clearly see that the CPU usage is at 100% and that it is Explorer that is taking up 99% of it. I end the task of opening my computer, and then I try again and everything is fine until maybe five minutes later when the problem reoccurs. I have run virus checkers and adaware and neither has shown any problem

Also i tried to delete Windows messenger Live in the the control panel under add remove windows components i deleted internet explorer by mistake and had to reinstall it. The last time it didn't shut down but i got a blue screen that said Windows has detected a software or hardware problem and has shut down to prevent damage,check any new hardware or software that have been recently installed, the error massage was " IRQL_NOT LESS_OR_ EQUAL. I am running IBM pentium 4 windows XP.

View 13 Replies View RelatedI've done about as much research on this as I can understand, but I am still at a loss. I have recently been getting the infamous BSOD and lots of Error Reporting Messages. Most commonly, the error reporting is with Internet Explorer or Firefox, and tonight my BSOD was during a full system scan using F-Secure.
I used to get BSODs all the time, but a co-worker took it home for a weekend and replaced some RAM (I think?) and got things running again. This only solved the problem for a few months and things have gotten progressively worse.
When I start IE6 it just hangs on a white screen. I have SP2 and I've removed and reinstalled IE6 a couple of times but it doesn't help. When I launch IE it just hangs attempting to load my homepage (google) but I can press stop and access Options etc.. Firefox and all my other programs that access the internet are working fine but I need IE working too.I can't even access my router control panel via IE which makes me think this is a IE networking configuration problem. I've tried flushing dns but that didn't help.

When I log onto Internet Explorer I get a blue screen that tells me I need to reset my security settings in order to view my home page which is road runner. I followed the instructions and nothing. I cannot view any flash sites. I tried to see if I am missing a flash player and I cannot locate one. When I try to download Adobe Flash Player, I am unable to do so as the download button does not appear on my screen ( I know where the button is supposed to be because I checked out the site on my daughters computer,which I am on now). I also tried to download other software to help with the spyware and malware, however the minute I hit download I either instantly get disconnected from the internet or I get an error message that says " Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and must shut down...". I have gone into safe mode and ran spybot and the others and still no better. I am getting a message that Windows Firewall is disabled, however when I got to it Its grey and it wont let me turn it on. I have been trying to fix my computer for days and am completely fustrated,

I cannot change the picture, only the color that I set for icon backgrounds. That sounds kind of confusing but I don't know how else to word it.
