Default Action Is Search The Drive Instead Exploring

Mar 29, 2005

I am running Windows XP Professional, and after deleting some software from my hard drive, I have been having a very strange problem:When I open My Computer and click on a drive letter, the default action is to search the drive, instead of exploring it.

Default Double-click Action Changed To Search ?

How To Change Default Action For Clicking A Shortcut?

Oct 14, 2008

I am running XP SP3.I have been doing some desktop customization and somehow have gotten all of my .lnk files to behave strangely. If I double-click a .lnk file (a shortcut) it opens an explorer window (file browser not internet explorer) to the "my computer" directory.(for example, if i double-click my recycle bin it opens the recycle bin folder if i make a shortcut to the recycle bin and double-click that it opens an explorer window set to "my computer")if I right-click the .lnk file I see that the "explore" option is bolded indicating that this is the default action of a double-click. if instead, i choose "open" then the .lnk file behaves normally. now, i know that in order to change the default actions for a file type, i go to control panel->folder options->file types and find the extension that i want to modify.for some reason .lnk is not in my list of file types.... so then i tried adding it to my list but when i do this it shows up after i have done it but "apply" is greyed out and then if i close the folder option window and return to it there is no .lnk extension in the file types list.

Exploring Drive E - Pagefile Set Up

Feb 13, 2007

When "exploring" drive E: I see pagefile.sys at 1532 Mb. but drive C: has no pagefile.sys. I've tried setting up the pagefile several times on drive C: but still don't see anything. I've read that I may need to do brain surgery on the registry to set up my pagefiler on C: but I'm kinda nervous about that.

Default Double-click Is Search Instead Of Open.

Jul 23, 2005

For some reason, the default choice for when I double-click any of my drives (C:, A:, D:, E:, F: ) (hard drives and removable) is search instead of openNote: This isn't the case if I am trying to Open... or Save as... in any executable.I only want to change the default option to Open again (or Explore if I am using Windows Explorer), but I have tried many things with no results (From folder options to drive properties to many things in the Control Panel

Default Double-click Actions - Goes To Search

May 18, 2006

I was recently in "folder options" and then "file types", just going through and changing icons for disk drives and folders, JPG's and whatnot. Anyway, after doing that, I noticed that if I try to double-click on a disk drive it'll go to Search. And if I double-click on a folder it'll go to Clear Read Only Attributes. I've obviously changed the default action associated with a double-click on folders and disk drives, and I know how to change the default actions undertaken by disc drives and folders and everything else when double-clicked. The thing is, when I go into folder options, file types, advanced (after selecting say, disk drive) the option to change the default action to "open" isn't there, for either folders or disk drives. Other options such as Find are present, but nothing else

Live Search - Ie8 - Corrupted Default Engine

Apr 23, 2010

Since moving to IE8 I have regularly been haunted by a large box appearing whenever I open it - even during a session if I leave it temporarily and reopen - telling me that a program has corrupted my default search engine which is live search and I am given the choice of enabling it or seeking out another search engine. I have done so in variations, such as disabling it, enabling it, redownloading it from the MS site, deleting all add-ons and then some. But whatever I do the same (double) box keeps appearing. Should I uninstall IE8 and then reinstall it as a last resort, or is there an easier way to get rid of the pest?

Search Option Opens Up By Default Instead Of The Open Option

Aug 10, 2006

I use Windows XP SP2. Recently noticed that when I left-click on any of the icons of the Hard-disk drives and/or Devices with Removable Storage within 'My Computer', the 'Search' Option opens up by default instead of the 'Open' option, like in other folders. Likewise, when I right-click on the said icons, the 'Search' option is topmost & the 'Open' option has been relegated to second position. I would like the Search option to come first. Can't remember whether this was so from before or changed recently.
I have used Norton Partition Magic 8 recently to resize my partitions.

Error When Exploring Folder Or Disc Via Shortcut

Dec 3, 2003

Any time I right click on a SHORTCUT to a folder or disc and try to open it via the Explore option, I get the error message "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" and then the Active Desktop Recovery screen. If I open, for instance, the folder "X" via the right click/Explore option, it opens the folder for me to view. But if I do the exact same thing with a SHORTCUT to folder "X", I get the error message above and then the Active Desktop Recovery screen.Note, however, that if I just double-click on a shortcut to a folder,it opens fine, as normal. It is ONLY when I right click and attempt to "Explore" the folder or disc that I get the error message! This is clearly a "exporer" problem. So basically any time I Explore a Folder via a shortcut, I get the above error message and then if I agree to report that problem to Microsoft, I then lose my desktop photo and get the Active Desktop Recovery screen. But if I click Dont Send on the MS Error Message, then it just closes the Window and leaves me with my (normal) desktop.

"Search" Option Set As Default / Only Happening To "My Computer"?

Aug 18, 2006

When I open "My Computer" and then click to open one of the local or mapped drives, instead of opening that drive I get a "Search" window launched. I can open the drives by right clicking and selecting "Open", but I'd much rather just be able to open them normally! The strange thing (to me, anyway) is that this only happens in "My Computer" - not in any other folder or window...

How Do Change Default Hard Drive When Doing Save As

Mar 24, 2010

It's a mole hill of a problem, but it is a bit annoying to have to click on my principal drive ("C") every time I'm doing a "save". I have enclosed an excerpt of a screen shot of my "save as" window to display how the default drive being automatically selected is the "D" drive rather than the "C" drive that I use primarily. To be honest, I don't know whether this can be corrected by a software change, or whether it's the way the two hard drives are connected in my computer.

Right Click The C: Drive In Explorer - Search Fails

Jun 16, 2005

When I right click the "Windows" directory in Windows Explorer and select "search" and do a search for "Hosts", the search finds the "Hosts" file in the "C:WINDOWSsystem32driversetc" directory. All well and good because that's what I want and expect.

However, when I right click on the C: drive itself in Windows Explorer and select "search" and do a search for "Hosts", the search fails to find the Hosts file in the "...driversetc." directory. It does find
hosts files elsewhere. For example it finds "Hosts.txt" and "Hosts" files that I placed on my desktop.

When I right click a drive in Windows Explorer and select "search", I damn well want to search the entire drive. Unfortunately, Windows has apparently defaulted to some kind of limited search. How do I force
Windows search the entire drive?

Start Menu Has Vanished And Msconfig Is Missing In Action

Aug 12, 2007

as i turned on my laptop today i realized that there is no start menu. All my desktop icons are there, though they take longer than normal to load and taskmanager works fine and i have all my navigation menus as well. I am also unable to run msconfig, even in Command Prompt. When i type in msconfig, i get the following message.msconfig is not a recognized command. Another problem that i have been having is that if i click on a window, and taskmanager was infront of it, taskmanager does not move behind my active window. I am running windows XP, on a Presario V2000 with a 60 gig hd, and a 512. i have tried everything to get it to come back, i have booted in safe mode and tried that way, i have also used StartUp Mechanic to disable everything that i do not recognize in hopes that something is blocking the start menu from loading. I am okay with a computer, but the simpler the instructions the better.

I am also interested in creating a tree diagram that will show the entire structure of my drive, i.e. think something like the explore's bar view folders option with expand all. MS DOS PROMP will give you such an option but it's not really user friendly.
