Live Search - Ie8 - Corrupted Default Engine
Apr 23, 2010
Since moving to IE8 I have regularly been haunted by a large box appearing whenever I open it - even during a session if I leave it temporarily and reopen - telling me that a program has corrupted my default search engine which is live search and I am given the choice of enabling it or seeking out another search engine. I have done so in variations, such as disabling it, enabling it, redownloading it from the MS site, deleting all add-ons and then some. But whatever I do the same (double) box keeps appearing. Should I uninstall IE8 and then reinstall it as a last resort, or is there an easier way to get rid of the pest?

For some reason, the default choice for when I double-click any of my drives (C:, A:, D:, E:, F: ) (hard drives and removable) is search instead of openNote: This isn't the case if I am trying to Open... or Save as... in any executable.I only want to change the default option to Open again (or Explore if I am using Windows Explorer), but I have tried many things with no results (From folder options to drive properties to many things in the Control Panel

I was recently in "folder options" and then "file types", just going through and changing icons for disk drives and folders, JPG's and whatnot. Anyway, after doing that, I noticed that if I try to double-click on a disk drive it'll go to Search. And if I double-click on a folder it'll go to Clear Read Only Attributes. I've obviously changed the default action associated with a double-click on folders and disk drives, and I know how to change the default actions undertaken by disc drives and folders and everything else when double-clicked. The thing is, when I go into folder options, file types, advanced (after selecting say, disk drive) the option to change the default action to "open" isn't there, for either folders or disk drives. Other options such as Find are present, but nothing else

I use Windows XP SP2. Recently noticed that when I left-click on any of the icons of the Hard-disk drives and/or Devices with Removable Storage within 'My Computer', the 'Search' Option opens up by default instead of the 'Open' option, like in other folders. Likewise, when I right-click on the said icons, the 'Search' option is topmost & the 'Open' option has been relegated to second position. I would like the Search option to come first. Can't remember whether this was so from before or changed recently.
I have used Norton Partition Magic 8 recently to resize my partitions.

I really hope someone can help me with this one. I don't know what's going on. I never had any problems installing MSN Live before and now, it's a real pain. I just got my PC back from the tech guy. He formated my computer and reinstalled Windows XP including the Updates, I'm trying to install Windows Live Messenger (MSN) and it's not working. It's giving me errors like, to check that I have enough hard disk space (I have 176 GB free space), If my computer has a firewall , and that I make sure that my computer meets the system requirements I do meet the requirements

When I open "My Computer" and then click to open one of the local or mapped drives, instead of opening that drive I get a "Search" window launched. I can open the drives by right clicking and selecting "Open", but I'd much rather just be able to open them normally! The strange thing (to me, anyway) is that this only happens in "My Computer" - not in any other folder or window...
All thoughts and offers of help welcome!

I have to right click and select 'open' every time. if i right click, the menu opens there and 'search' is on the top in bold instead of 'open'.

I bought a game today and wanted to install it. I put the cd in, and it says "The InstallShield Engine (ikernel.exe) could not be launched. No such interface supported." I've tried everything possible that google has to offer. I tried deleting the Engine file, but it won't delete. It would come right back. I tried looking for corrupt files in C:, nothing. I went to the Installshield consumers website. Nothing on there helped. I've tried all but downloading the latest version of ikernel, but the problem is I have to use the kernel program to install the latest kernel which isn't working. I hope that made sense. I saw I could use Windows Installer, but yeah I have no clue how to use that. I downloaded it, and I'm lost after that. It would be awesome if someone could give me walk through on using it or just tell me how to solve my original problem.

The new interface in Office 2007 has a great new look but finding your favorite feature can be a little difficult at first. Microsoft Office Labs offers a helpful utility called Search Commands that brings search to the ribbon. Can’t find a specific feature? Just search for it!
Just download and install the Search Commands utility and you will have a new search tab in Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
Download Search Commands from Microsoft Office Labs

My Search Companion now calls itself Search Results and does not offer to find Pictures, music, or video, Documents, etc. Also the animated assistant is not available nor is the change preferences option. I had a nasty virus attack and had to repair XP Pro. All else is repaired as far as I can tell, but this version of Search is not nearly as handy.

is there a way in Windows XP to turned off searching in *.zip during the Search command? I search multiple network drives serveral times a day for files and do not need to search in the *.zip files. By searching the *.zip files the time is greatly increased. When I had Windows 2000 the search would take about 1 minute (did not search *.zip files) and now in Windows XP the search takes over 12 and half minutes (1079 *.zip files)
I did a test by making all the *.zip hidden and did the search again - averaged about 59 seconds. Unforunately, I have to leave the *.zip files as not hidden.
Any ideas?
