When I turn on my computer, it does the bios check, then goes into the bios screen on its own. I have checked all of the bios settings, and see nothing set wrong. The only way I can get itno my xp pro system, is to use "F8" during the bios check, the select my hd from there, then it seems only half of my programs work, and it also seems to be randomly changing the programs that do not work, when I do this.

Took maybe 15-20 minutes to get started.When the desktop finally came up, it was in a bad resolution. The cursor would move fine, but if i tried to click on anything it would pretty much completely freeze up.Id maybe be able to minimize a window, but no program would open at all.I don't really know what to do since it is pretty much impossible to do anything on the computer.I checked my hard drive in the computer BIOS and it didn't report any problems.Not really sure what my next step should be.I have a lot of information on my computer that i really can't lose, but don't really know how to back anything up at this point.What can i do?

Using xp home. Computer was purchased in 2004. Fairly nice computer for it's age, would like to restore it back to working condition. For a detailed description of the events leading to what happened read below. Any questions, post and I'll answer, I'll be checking back every 10-30 min. I figure it is the hard drive but who knows.
A few weeks ago it started freezing and restarting randomly. Sometimes, on restarting, I would get the "Serious error" pop-up, which I always sent, and always got different results. Sometimes it would say it was an unknown driver error, sometimes an anti-virus error, once a RAM error. I had just upgraded the RAM when this started, so I ran the M$ testing tool several times, no errors. I also removed the new RAM, which didn't solve the problem, and put it back in

I was away from home for about a week and left the machine plugged into the mains but powered down. When I returned home to boot up, it kept doing things like constantly hanging on parts of the bios POST screen, eventually booting up after thirty or so complete restarts. It finally booted into windows but after the last shutting down, it will now not boot up at all. I have replaced the bios battery and reset the bios several times.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm working on a Pav zt1130. Upon boot the message "A disk read error occured Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". I've checked the BIOS and it does appear to be seeing the HD. I've changed the boot order and attempted to boot from WinXP Home CD. It displays the "Setup is checking your configuration" message, then nada. The user said that it was running fine yesterday, but she booted this a.m. and received this message. She had a non-bootable floppy and a non-bootable CD in, but I've not seen that to cause this problem. Just a coincidence? HD failure the real culprit?
View 6 Replies View Relatedonce the on button was pushed, it came up with the BIOS screen asking for the password.I removed the CMOS battery, which allowed me to change the Password so I can get onto BIOS now. However, when I boot now it just comes up with the BIOS screen.I set HD to boot first, aswell as setting the clock and date. I then ask it to save and quit, after which it shut's down, and reboots, only, BIOS keeps coming up. And I need to get this sorted asap
View 14 Replies View RelatedGot a bit of a problem with my housemates pc.A friend gave him some extra RAM, i checked it out and it was crucial 512mb pc2100 CL2.5, and although it didn't match his exsisting RAM it seemed to me that his mobo would only run the FSB at 200mhz anyway so i went ahead and fitted it.It worked fine I then noticed his system temp was running a little high (60-65 degrees), so i took his heatsink off and cleaned the dust and refitted it with some new thermal compound.I added too much and the temp went up. To nearly 90 degrees.I shut it dwon as i didn't want the cpu to pop, cleaned it off, reapplied less compound and figured this would work fine.Now we have the problem. Most of the time: Power on and nothing happens. No bios, no beeps. Occasionally: Power on, i jump into the bios, the temp looks fine (30-40 degrees) and then it freezes right there in the bios after about 30 seconds to a minute.This sounds like a heat issue, but the last temp reading before freeze is 33 degrees.?I've double and triple checked that the heatsink is on properly and thats fine. I followed the official guide on how much compound to use (a blob the size of an uncooked short grain of rice).
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhile in XP I deleted a partiain that had Fedora on it. I was using GRUB to do multi-boot. When I rebooted XP it booted to the GRUB command line. I rebooted and hit F12 to try to get to system settings and after I chose system settings it went right back to the GRUB command line. I rebooted again and hit F2 to get to system settings and it went straight to the GRUB command line again.I'm pretty sure I need to fix my MBR but, I can't change my settings to boot from my CD and I don't have a floppy drive.

I contacted the maker of my motherboard and they say an upgrade is available and sent it to me for { DON'T CRACKUP} $49.00. The bios utility setup is not getting opened through access ibm button . View 3 Replies View RelatedI made the huge mistake of deciding to wipe ME and re-load an operating system (XP) onto a Compaq destktop PC (800mhz).To cut a long story short, with the re-formatted hard drive installed (NTFS), upon trying to get the PC to boot from the CD ROM to install XP it will not go any further than telling me that it cannot detect an operating system. It doesn't want to let the bootable CD ROM take over, although you can hear the CD ROM spinning, as if trying initiate a boot-up. I have tried everything - trying different CD ROMs, different ribbon cables, unplugging other hardware etc etc, but it always stops at the aforementioned message. When I go into the BIOS to see if I can alter the settings to force the PC to only boot up from the CD ROM (and try other things), the command (F10) to make changes, or to save the changes and exit will not work. It is as if the feature has been locked to stop anyone altering the BIOS settings. I haven't come across this before.

View 7 Replies View RelatedThis all started when my computer was shutting down at random times when I was in windows...at first I thought it was my CPU because it was just shutting down when I was playing games... but I no longer think this because it started shutting down when I was just in windows.Anyway so my friend and I started working on it...we thought it was the mild overclock we put on a few weeks earlier. However, my temps were normal and it passed the stress tests we did on it through the BIOS...So we changed the settings back to stock. No luck.Problem not solved. In fact, now we can't stay in windows for more than a couple seconds before it re-boots.

I'm using a notebook and I just hibernate my computer, so I decided to finally give it a restart. The restart when fine, I saw the boot screen it was booting, I could of aborted the chkdsk but I decided to let it run. After it ran, the computer restarted and the computer hangs after the bios screen. F8 --> Safe Mode, Last known good config and all those nice things didn't work. I even booted into recovery mode, tried chkdsk /p fixboot fixmbr, none of that worked. Anyways, right now I booted into the XP CD clicked enter, clicked REPAIR and it's just reinstalling over I guess? I've never clicked repair before so I don't know how this is going to work

I downloaded speed fan program just to see what it was like and it stopped responding. so i waited for it to "end now" and it wouldnt. i got impatient and shut the computer off manually with the button. i went to go turn it back on and the bios screen would load then the windows xp screen comes up with the scrolling blue bar. after that it goes to a black screen with no error messeges and no cursor.

View 2 Replies View Relatedmy computer was running totally fine until i was converting some videos with itunes for my itouch and then the itunes froze the comp. it did the freeze i restarted the computer but ...nothing. i can't even get into the bios screen! everything powers up fine so i know its not the psu. I've tried removing extra hdds and starting with just the main hdd and removing all peripherals except monitor but still nothing. there is no resposnse form the hdd after initial power up. i noticed that the activitiy light remains dead after the initial power up. i hear the hdds spinning but nothing is happening. i dont understand why it wont even go into bios screen...i can see and hear the cpu and vid card fans spinning so i know they are getting power

Well in doing resurch for a freind in trying to understand the process of overclocking and sheer curiosty to see what my system would be able to push alittle harder i found my way in my bios and desided reluctently to play around with it some to see if i could get my medocer pc to push alittle harder than what it is set for and well i saved and almost immeditly my screen went blank and every time i try to restart my computer, there is nothing being emulated by my screen even thought the montier is in prime shape. aghh so how badly should i kick my own tush and what should i do to repair what i have broken???!?

Getting the blue screen occasionally when I start NetZero's free dial-up program. The blue screen will appear right as the PC is trying to open up a Internet Explorer window, after the dial-up connection has been made successfully. The blue screen states to disable BIOS, but I don't have a clue how to do that
A few days ago strange lines started appearing on my computer screen. It has progressed and I could barely see anything. Then monitor kept going into "power saver" mode and back when I booted Windows in normal mode. I booted Windows in "safe mode". Monitor wasn't shutting off anymore but the screen was barely readable.I managed to save my data on external drive. I put in my Windows installation disk and restarted computer wanting to format the hard disk and reinstall Windows.When I would restart I would see black screen and hear DVD drive spinning but nothing was happening. Now when I restart I see this .This screen just stands there. I cannot access the BIOS, load Windows or boot from CD/DVD. All 3 fans in my comp work fine when computer is on. I tried removing this battery and putting it back later but it didn't help. My computer has 2 gigs RAM, runs Win XP Professional SP2 and this is my motherboard .At this point I have no idea what to do or even what caused this. I was hoping to format and reinstall Windows but I'm unable to boot.
