AMI BIOS Plug And Play Settings?
Mar 14, 2008
I would like to understand some of the settings on my AMI BIOS v02.58 plus get suggestions on the recommended settings for my XP Home SP2 system (ASUS P5K3 mobo with INTEL Core 2 Duo E6850/3.0/4MB, RAM 2GB/DDR3/PC3-8500):1. Advanced / PCIPnP / Plug And Play O/S: Settings are NO (default) and YES
NO = Lets the BIOS configure all the devices in the system. YES = Lets the OS configure PnP devices not required for boot if your system has a PnP OS.Should I leave the default NO setting or change it to YES and why?

When I was installing Windows XP SP3 on this computer, I received a notice that the installer couldn't find a specific file, but I was able to skip over it and resume installation. I received this notice when I installed Windows on another machine but this time looked it up and was able to find the file on the CD (don't remember the file name.). On the first computer, it seems like a lot of plug and play functionality doesn't work..specifically when I hook up my Creative Zen (MP3 player) or even Blackberry. I am unable to transfer files to or from these devices through Explorer like I can the other computer in which I did a thorough installation of Windows. I am also unable to update Windows Media Player, which could or could not be related. Is it possible the file I skipped over is what's causing this issue? Is there any way I can repair Windows or do I have to re-install?

I recently had to uninstall my HP Officejet 5610. When I reinstalled my USB connection, an error screen tells me "the required section was not found in the INF." HP's diagnostic confirmed that the usb.inf file was in place but that the system was not accessing it, probably due to a digital signature issue. They said to reformat and reinstall WIN! I'm not techno savy to proceed, but a Windows reinstall seems extreme.

After a recent automatic software update, the sound on my computer stopped working. When I go to the device manager, it's telling me that no audio device is installed and I can't seem to find it or how to reinstall it (I do not have the disk that came with the computer). However, my main concerns are the USB ports and the Plug and Play feature. These were working fine, but now nothing happens when I plug in a USB device. There is power going to the USB ports, however, the system doesn't seem to recognize that I have plugged something in. I've tried uninstalling the drivers and restarting the system, and the drivers were correctly reinstalled but it is still not finding any new device that I plug in. System restore isn't working either.

When I turn on my computer, it does the bios check, then goes into the bios screen on its own. I have checked all of the bios settings, and see nothing set wrong. The only way I can get itno my xp pro system, is to use "F8" during the bios check, the select my hd from there, then it seems only half of my programs work, and it also seems to be randomly changing the programs that do not work, when I do this.

While in XP I deleted a partiain that had Fedora on it. I was using GRUB to do multi-boot. When I rebooted XP it booted to the GRUB command line. I rebooted and hit F12 to try to get to system settings and after I chose system settings it went right back to the GRUB command line. I rebooted again and hit F2 to get to system settings and it went straight to the GRUB command line again.I'm pretty sure I need to fix my MBR but, I can't change my settings to boot from my CD and I don't have a floppy drive.

I made the huge mistake of deciding to wipe ME and re-load an operating system (XP) onto a Compaq destktop PC (800mhz).To cut a long story short, with the re-formatted hard drive installed (NTFS), upon trying to get the PC to boot from the CD ROM to install XP it will not go any further than telling me that it cannot detect an operating system. It doesn't want to let the bootable CD ROM take over, although you can hear the CD ROM spinning, as if trying initiate a boot-up. I have tried everything - trying different CD ROMs, different ribbon cables, unplugging other hardware etc etc, but it always stops at the aforementioned message. When I go into the BIOS to see if I can alter the settings to force the PC to only boot up from the CD ROM (and try other things), the command (F10) to make changes, or to save the changes and exit will not work. It is as if the feature has been locked to stop anyone altering the BIOS settings. I haven't come across this before.

I have Windows XP OS installed on my HP Pavilion 753n Desktop. I currently have 512MB SDRAM loaded, and want to upgrade with another 512MB. Is it necessary to update my BIOS settings (current BIOS on computer is dated 11 September 2002) prior to upgrading the memory?

This all started when my computer was shutting down at random times when I was in windows...at first I thought it was my CPU because it was just shutting down when I was playing games... but I no longer think this because it started shutting down when I was just in windows.Anyway so my friend and I started working on it...we thought it was the mild overclock we put on a few weeks earlier. However, my temps were normal and it passed the stress tests we did on it through the BIOS...So we changed the settings back to stock. No luck.Problem not solved. In fact, now we can't stay in windows for more than a couple seconds before it re-boots.

whenever I try to play music it doesnt play, it says low on memory, whenever I open any Microsoft Word program it gives me some error about a license, and whever I try to copy and paste anything, it doesnt let me. I have a few partitions on my hard drive and whenever I copy one file or a folder or anything, I cannot paste it anywhere. If I open Control Panel, the screen doesnt appear as usual, all the icons are on two columns on the lft side with a scroll bar next to them. If I try to open Add/Remove programs, it comes up all garbled. I was going to just reformat the whole computer but it will not boot from the cd rom drive now. And whenever the computer is booted in W2K and I try to browse the CD in My Computer, it just says "Please insert disk in drive...." Also, whenevr I restart, it sits on my desktop for about 5 minutes before it finally brings up the icons and everything. It has never done any of this, it just started this morning.

That doesn't appear anymore and I have to keep selecting tunes each time one ends. I looked in the window drop downs but can't find how to bring back PLAY ALL.

once the on button was pushed, it came up with the BIOS screen asking for the password.I removed the CMOS battery, which allowed me to change the Password so I can get onto BIOS now. However, when I boot now it just comes up with the BIOS screen.I set HD to boot first, aswell as setting the clock and date. I then ask it to save and quit, after which it shut's down, and reboots, only, BIOS keeps coming up. And I need to get this sorted asap

I have had windows XP Pro installed, updated and running fine until about a week ago. I was away from home for about a week and left the machine plugged into the mains but powered down. When I returned home to boot up, it kept doing things like constantly hanging on parts of the bios POST screen, eventually booting up after thirty or so complete restarts. It finally booted into windows but after the last shutting down, it will now not boot up at all. I have replaced the bios battery and reset the bios several times.

Got a bit of a problem with my housemates pc.A friend gave him some extra RAM, i checked it out and it was crucial 512mb pc2100 CL2.5, and although it didn't match his exsisting RAM it seemed to me that his mobo would only run the FSB at 200mhz anyway so i went ahead and fitted it.It worked fine I then noticed his system temp was running a little high (60-65 degrees), so i took his heatsink off and cleaned the dust and refitted it with some new thermal compound.I added too much and the temp went up. To nearly 90 degrees.I shut it dwon as i didn't want the cpu to pop, cleaned it off, reapplied less compound and figured this would work fine. Now we have the problem. Most of the time: Power on and nothing happens. No bios, no beeps. Occasionally: Power on, i jump into the bios, the temp looks fine (30-40 degrees) and then it freezes right there in the bios after about 30 seconds to a minute. This sounds like a heat issue, but the last temp reading before freeze is 33 degrees.?I've double and triple checked that the heatsink is on properly and thats fine. I followed the official guide on how much compound to use (a blob the size of an uncooked short grain of rice).

I recently installed windows Xp and SP2. But now when I plug a device into a USB port I don't get the pop up saying "detected new hardware". Also the new device (I pluged in a flash memory drive) doesn't show up when I open "my computer". I think the ports are working cause when I pluged in my iPod and then went into the BIOS the iPOd was listed as an option on the Boot configuration.

Just recently when I plug in the USB plug for my steering wheel, the cursor either vanishes or freezes. It never used to do that before.I was led to believe, some time ago, that you don't need to power down to insert a USB plug. Can anyone tell me why *all of a sudden* (last 3 - 4 weeks) this is happening? I'm running Windows XP home with a P4 speed 2.4 gHz and a healthy 1 GB RAM. I suppose this begs the question: what can I do about it? (besides leaving the USB plug in!

his roomate completey ruined the OS it wouldnt even boot to windows, It had a missing NTDLR, using a windows bootdisk I was able to reformat it and reload windows. Here is the odd part, the NTDLR.com and the NTDLR files are all in the root directory, andit still doesnt boot to windows without the startup disk, when I boot it up it says non bootable disk or non system disk then trys the CD roms then the floppy, yet i put the floppy disk in there and it magically works, and the files on the boot disk are the same as the files in the HD's root directory. So now I'm thinking something is wrong with the HardDrive not the NTDLR. I plugged another Hard Drive I had lying around with windows on it and made it the slave drive, and it worked fine, i could select both versions of windows(each 1 installation per disc) and the would both load, so Is there something before the NTDLR.

Im new to PCs and since my motherboard is three years old is it a good idea to upgrade? I contacted the maker of my motherboard and they say an upgrade is available and sent it to me for { DON'T CRACKUP} $49.00. I already read that you can really mess up your PC if you do one thing wrong when upgrading. Am I a fool for buying the upgrade? Please let me know as I can send the Floppy discs back.

Last week I couldn't shut off computer, because spysweeper and other programs were not responding, I had to cancel programs for computer to shut off.I thought it was virus because 1 month ago I allowed communication when prompted from Norton that suspicious malicous activity possible if I continue , I was trying to download my picture onto a website. I ran a scan and it was clean. I called Norton and they said to deactivate spysweeper and it would take care of the boot problem.
