Memory Upgrade / Nessessary To Update BIOS Settings
Nov 25, 2008
I have Windows XP OS installed on my HP Pavilion 753n Desktop. I currently have 512MB SDRAM loaded, and want to upgrade with another 512MB. Is it necessary to update my BIOS settings (current BIOS on computer is dated 11 September 2002) prior to upgrading the memory?

I NEED urgent help, not THIS computer but the person I live with's computer is EXTREMELY slow, things take up to 10-20 minutes to open sometimes, it takes at least 15 minutes to start up or shut down, everything lags, we've tried EVERYTHING, virus scanning, spyware, malware, cleaning the registry, defraging the registry and harddrive, cleaning up, EVERYTHING, anytime you shut down after applying some sort of setting it says it's saving the settings and then you start it back up and it acts like it never saved it, it goes back to the OLD CRAPPY settings, puts every error back on that the program found, recently the boot.ini has become corrupt or invalid, there are two hard drives with plenty of space and we've had this problem for a couple of years! We can't figure out what to do, we both have the same computer, bought it at the same time, mine runs like a charm but their's does not at all, the cpu usage is sky high when you aren't doing anything and sometimes it is 0% when you ARE doing stuff. There is about 10 or more svchost.exe's running, two under a seperate username and none of which we can stop. There are diagnostic lights on the back BUT anytime there is anything wrong with the lights we look in the manual and on the offical website and NO ONE HAS THE LIGHT COMBONATION THAT WE DO!! It's a Dell Dimension 2400, right now it has both 512MB and a 128MB RAM memory stick, we can't upgrade the memory or it fails and starts beeping, Windows XP Home Edition,

I just flashed/upgraded my BIOS for my motherboard, and now XP doesn't even boot up.
After the BIOS load, I get a "MBR error 2" message and it just stays there.
My board is an Asus P5N32-SLI SE Deluxe. I used the Asus Update Utility to flash my BIOS.

When I turn on my computer, it does the bios check, then goes into the bios screen on its own. I have checked all of the bios settings, and see nothing set wrong. The only way I can get itno my xp pro system, is to use "F8" during the bios check, the select my hd from there, then it seems only half of my programs work, and it also seems to be randomly changing the programs that do not work, when I do this.

I am trying to upgrade the RAM memory on my Gateway MX3230 notebook. It presently has 256 MB and I would like to upgrade to 1 GB. I have checked the Gateway website and and upgrade to 1 GB is acceptable. I purchased a memory module from Kingston which was listed as being compatible with my laptop. When I tried installing the module, the computer will not start, nothing but black screen. It's as thought there is no memory at all. I tried re-installing the module making sure it was inserted in as far as it will go, still no luck. There is no settings in bios that I can see that would prevent the acceptance of this module

A DFI NForce3 motherboard. He went to the DFI site and downloaded the bios upgrade using the winflash software. The system then started running memtest86+ It went through a dozen passes -- no errors -- and now he can't get it to stop. He's tried pushing escape but its turning the test back on. He's tried the other tabs on memtest86+ I can't remember the names and memtest86+ restarts but he can't get back to Windows. How can he turn the darn thing off I'm not computer literate, but I did a little checking and I came across something that said to take memtest86+ out of the floppy drive or reset the boot order. His memtest86+ is not on a floppy or cd and he can't get the bios to come up to reset a boot order

I have a ASUS motherboard P5RD1-VM .O.S. Windows XP SP3 ./ Nvidia 8800GT 512MB / Intel P. D 3.00 GHz / 1.50 GB of RAM. Last year I try to Install 2GB of ram sticks but my motherboard didn't recognize the 2GB, so I upgrade to 1002 Bios driver, It show the right amount of Mem. but the performance of the computer was pretty bad.So I flash back to my Original Bios 0903 and Installed just 1.5 GB. the Bios recognize the right amount Well after some time I decide to download and try the Beta driver 1104 with this BIOS version the performance of my system is half and half. The Internet browsing IE, Firefox, Opera and MSN works all right no slowdonws. The download of app. are ok no slow downs. The Winamp app. for music and WMP11 are ok no slowdowns. The VLC , Quick Time and Divx for watching videos and my editing app. for videoclips some hick ups Photoshop is showing traces of slowdowns, loading screens.

I recently updated BIOS on a Compaq Presario 5330US running XP Home SP2. Now when I play DRM protected content with WMP 11, I get a message that states "Windows Media Player cannot play the protected content file because a security upgrade is required. Do you want to download the security upgrade?" I click on "YES," and get another pop-up message. This message says "The file or device that you are trying to use requires a component of Windows Media Player to be upgraded; click Upgrade to download and install the required component." I do, but nothing happens.
I went to the Microsoft site and read a document at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa387015.aspx, which seems to describe the situation. It appears that my WMP 11 is not "Individualized" through Microsoft's Individualization Service.
I found another document at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925705/en-us, which sends you to a Microsoft web site at http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/Indivsite/en/indivit.asp titled Security Component Upgrade. There is an "Update" button there, but it is grayed out and not selectable.
Ive tried rolling back to WMP10 and reinstalling WMP11 (twice), I even reinstalled Explorer 7, but neither action corrected the problem.
Non-DRM protected content appears to run unaffected on WMP 11, and everything else seems to work OK, but I am very frustrated that megabytes worth of previously downloaded content is not available to me, nor am I able to run new content from the same sites. Also, I have another HP computer that has a BIOS upgrade available, but I am understandably worried about attempting this.

Not sure if this is the right group for this question - so apologies if anyone feels aggrieved.I have been told that it might be a good idea to update my nvidia geforce2 mx/mx400 bios (not driver) as it is 3 years old. I'm a bitconfused because the bios doesn't seem to be available on the nvidiasite but I have to get it from my motherboard site, Jetway. Am I goingnuts here? Can anyone reassure me of the best way of updating the biosin this video card?

My computer is 2 years old and after adding many games for the grandkids my computer has started slowing down. I now have 512MB of memory would it speed up my computer to add memory? If so how much should I add and how do I do this? Is there a site that shows step by step instructions?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

While in XP I deleted a partiain that had Fedora on it. I was using GRUB to do multi-boot. When I rebooted XP it booted to the GRUB command line. I rebooted and hit F12 to try to get to system settings and after I chose system settings it went right back to the GRUB command line. I rebooted again and hit F2 to get to system settings and it went straight to the GRUB command line again.I'm pretty sure I need to fix my MBR but, I can't change my settings to boot from my CD and I don't have a floppy drive.

I have a custom pc with 512Mb of memory and want to add 1Gb to that.Ive already
check at Kingston,Crucial and Gigabyte sites and know I need a DDR-333 memory.
I have some questions though.
1.Will I need to add an extra fan to avoid higher temperature anywhere?
2.How can I know if my existing memory stick will work with the new one?
3.Do I need to change any configuration in my computer?

I made the huge mistake of deciding to wipe ME and re-load an operating system (XP) onto a Compaq destktop PC (800mhz).To cut a long story short, with the re-formatted hard drive installed (NTFS), upon trying to get the PC to boot from the CD ROM to install XP it will not go any further than telling me that it cannot detect an operating system. It doesn't want to let the bootable CD ROM take over, although you can hear the CD ROM spinning, as if trying initiate a boot-up. I have tried everything - trying different CD ROMs, different ribbon cables, unplugging other hardware etc etc, but it always stops at the aforementioned message. When I go into the BIOS to see if I can alter the settings to force the PC to only boot up from the CD ROM (and try other things), the command (F10) to make changes, or to save the changes and exit will not work. It is as if the feature has been locked to stop anyone altering the BIOS settings. I haven't come across this before.

Everytime I perfom a Spyware Scan on my daughters computer it reboots automaticly, with a short blue screen flashing up. And when I run a microsoft update scan the computer reboots in the same manner during that scan. Everytime the HD is getting scaned it reboots in the middle of it, with a short flash of a blue screen that talks about physical memory dump. Can somebody help me there. By the way I reformated the HD already and reloadet everything new on that HD, because it had the same problem before. Could it be the BIOS or a setting.

I know that just exporting and importing the Registry does not put the Registry back to as it was before any new entries were made.
I've been told that doing a System Restore does not wipe out all new entries either.
I was told that the only way to put a Registry back as it was before new entries,is to do a System State backup using the Microsoft Backup utility.
Is the correct, and if not what method puts a Registry back, wiping out any and all new entries, the way it was

I recently purchased additional memory, 2 sticks of 256mb PC133, for my HP computer. I currently have 2x128mb and this has worked since I bought my computer about 3 years
ago. My problem is that when I install both the new sticks, 512 total, the system refuses to boot into Windows and gives a FATAL SYSTEM ERROR. I don't get this
error with the 128mb memory, or even when mixing for a total of 384. The memory is from Crucial.com and I have run diagnostics on all sticks with no problems. I have
all the lastest Windows, BIOS, and hardware updates available, and still it crashes

Because of many crashes and a Windows messages telling me my BIOS was probably out of date I updated it through the Micro Star International.MSI Live Update Online. During the download process it gives you the option to backup your existing BIOS settings to a floppy. I don't have one so had to bypass. It seemed to worked but when the operation restarted I didn't know what I was supposed to do. In any case it rebooted but on that startup screen it said 'Checksum bad'. When XP loaded I got the 'the system has recovered from a serious error' message again. I thought that I must have done something wrong. I went throught the whole process again to update the BIOS process. XP loaded OK and everything seeme to work. Becasue of the previous problems I thought I had better check and restarted. I tried Pause/Break to freeze the startup screen bit by bit. But I couldn't grab the last line even with multiple attempts. No matter howm many times I tried I just couldn't read the last line, which I think said something about the Checksum' But couldn't make out whether it was bad or good. In previous viewings when it was 'bad' it was slower. Can anyone explain what is happening or how to capture the last line of text.

This all started when my computer was shutting down at random times when I was in windows...at first I thought it was my CPU because it was just shutting down when I was playing games... but I no longer think this because it started shutting down when I was just in windows.Anyway so my friend and I started working on it...we thought it was the mild overclock we put on a few weeks earlier. However, my temps were normal and it passed the stress tests we did on it through the BIOS...So we changed the settings back to stock. No luck.Problem not solved. In fact, now we can't stay in windows for more than a couple seconds before it re-boots.

Intel celeron 10g hard drive(very small almost full) compaq evo compact desktop.
My wife uses this for game play etc.It had 1 512m & 1 256 card in it & worked ok.
I removed the 256 card & put a second 512 in.When i boot up i just get 3 beeps all of the same length & the monitor light goes green & then back to orange & the screen says no signal. We bought the tower cheap about 12 months ago at 256mb so i put another 512 in it which made a great improvement.Just wondering why when i try to upgrade further this is happening. If i remove the second 512 & put the 256 back in it works fine.

I tried to update my BIOS on my Acer AOA150 Netbook (I know, terrible idea, I wanted it to be updated in case I used a 9 cell battery). I downloaded the BIOS, version 3310, from http://global-download.acer.com/GDFi...&LC=en&SC=PA_7
I clicked on one of the readme files and it said to click on one of the executable files included in the download and to then click "sure." Once I clicked sure, my computer immediately shut down. I tried to turn it on after only about 5 seconds. It simply will not start up completely but I *can* get to the F2 screen. If I choose not to go with the F2 option, the normal Windows XP flashing image will come up, except it flashes slightly slower than normal. Then, right before the screen can display my various accounts to start windows, the netbook completely shuts off. This is an Acer AOA 150 model netbook. I downloaded the BIOS.
I may have tried to turn it on while the computer was still trying to flash the BIOS. Or, I just messed up from the start by trying to do it from Windows.

Gateway E-3600, MoBo Intel D845PT, XP Home, SP3, I made same mistake as many others, I attempted to update my BIOS with Intel PAP08EB (not knowing that I should have used the Gateway BIOS update)( or better yet, not updated the BIOS at all). Everytime I start my computer the Intel BIOS update program comes up. I have figured out a work around so that I can start and use my computer, but it takes a lot of time and annoys me. I hit F1 to start the program (because nothing else works), then I hit CTRL-ALT-DEL (which kills the program) and tap F8 continuously until the emergency start program comes up.
