my keyboard and mouse cut out and yes they are both plugged in. they are stock so i believe they are p/s 2. uhm a the moment my keyboard is working but my mouse is not. sometimes my keyboard will also cut out but by restarting i can get it working again.
View 3 RepliesMy Dell Dimension desktop is running Win XP Media. A few days ago the mouse simply stopped working and on a reboot it did not fix it. I was using a wireless keyboard and mouse and noticed the light was not coming on on the receiver/transmitter so thought that perhaps that might be the problem. At the time I did not have another keyboard with a usb plug, my childs pc had a ps2 keyboard and i do not have a ps2 port. So I used my childs pc and my wireless keyboard and mouse work perfectly on it, including my transmitter/receiver.
The problem is obviously not with the hardware since they do work on her pc. I did however purchase a new keyboard and mouse - usb this time. I get the same issue. The keyboard works fine as I am able to boot in safe mode, enter the set up etc and can move around in those screens. As soon as it hits the XP log in screen though I am screwed, the keyboard is useless and with no mouse I am unable to click on my user name to log in...............
Just recently I haven't gotten my computer to recognize any of the CD's I am putting into either drive (a DVD R/RW drive or my CD-RW drive). Not only does nothing happen when I put in any CD (I have tried many), but also when I open up My Computer I don't see any drives listed under "Devices with Removable Storage" besides my 3 1/2 Floppy (A drive. What can I do to make my drives work again? I did build my computer, but everything has been working smoothly until this.
View 1 Replies View RelatedOver the weekend while doing some electrical work, I shut off the power to the room containing my computer. I had a hard time getting it to Start Up, but all seemed fine accept I had to re-set the clock. Then I shortly discovered that it would not recognize either D: or E: drive, I finally did get them both to recognize an audio cd but only after opening them through WMP. Usually they start when placed in the drive, and it will use my default player (Nero). When I looked in "My Computer" it prompts me to insert a disk ?? I am running Windows 2000 NT Pro and the C: drive seems to be operating fine.

There are no errors and nothing happens to indicate that it just stopped recognizing it, but when I click a link or Internet Explorer it gives me the "Can not connect to this page" or send me to my ISP's modem page, which shows that I'm connected. I've been on the phone with Bellsouth and they say that it's not them. I've also still had this problem even though I disconnected all Firewall and Norton Internet Security for a few days.

During random times, my mouse click freezes, although my mouse can move and I can use the key board at this time, I cannot click or focus anything. View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently put together a new computer for my girlfriend, but didn't have the time to stay during the entire Windows installation. Apparently, while XP was installing (my girlfriend had gone out) her mother attempted to follow the prompts ( ); during this she mis-typed the serial key, and didn't know what to do... according to her, the installation froze. She couldn't tab to get back, and it didn't recognize the mouse. She restarted the computer, and apparently was able to get windows to install. My girlfriend called me later to tell me that "the screen is all wrong, the colors don't look right." Upon asking her what the problem was, she replied "the screen." 'Describe it to me' "it's the monitor". 'No, what's wrong with it?' "THE SCREEN DOESN"T LOOK RIGHT!!!". Heh. You can see what i'm dealing with. I had her go into desktop settings to crank the resolution up to at least 1024x768, and high colors; after she hits apply, nothing happens.
I told her to install the drivers for the graphics card. She's tried twice; each time it goes through the driver installation, and tells her to restart. Upon restarting, it goes to the Windows loading screen, and then (as best I can tell from what she's telling me) the monitor looses signal from the PC. Screen goes black, monitor light goes from green to orange. Computer is still on; it doesn't restart. She can only get back in via safe mode...........
I am not sure what the problem is. I have restarted the computer at least 10 times in the last 2 days. I never restart my computer. Its a newer gatway, well just over a year old. IT freezes up all the time. When you run your mouse over something it doesnt tell you what it is.

The keyboard died, so I bought a new cheapie that connects via USB. And I still have the wireless mouse. Since the change, my computer has slowed horribly, with keyboard and mouse commands, in particular, taking too long to register. View 14 Replies View RelatedMy first problem is that I can't shutdown my computer. I mean I can shut down the operating system, but the fan still runs. This seems to have come up within the last several weeks after I unplugged it once by accident. It wouldn't restart so I had to hit the reset button. I'd never previously used one, but thats what people suggested in other places when it wouldn't restart, just hit the reset button. So I did. Now I'm stuck with it not turning off. My second problem may be a direct result of the first. The last few days my keyboard and sometimes my mouse stop working.
My computer will just freeze out of nowhere, never while in a game, but sometimes while just doing menial tasks in windows, or just idling. By Freezes, I mean, I have one image on my monitor that's it. The mouse doesn't respond, the keyboard doesn't, nothing brings it out of it. I came home today to turn it on, and the only thing that happens is the fans both work, the cd drive lights come on, the power button light comes on, and the orange cpu light comes on. After a few seconds the cd lights flash again, and they repeat this process. The screen, keyboard, and mouse do not work. The monitor stays black the whole time. It has windows xp on it. I got it at Best buy, but it is out of warranty. It seems as if the computer continually restarts?

I had 2GB of DDR2 533 memory; I removed those and installed 4GB of DDR2 667 RAM (Kingston KHX5400D2K2/2G). When Windows XP runs, it shows 2.25GB of RAM only!! The BIOS sees 4GB of RAM and I ran Asus PC Probe and it sees all four 1GB modules (a total of 4GB) ... what shall I do to get XP to see the 4GB of RAM? Shall I reinstall?

I tried 5 different blank discs and got the same answer. So I ran Microsoft Fix it and got the message that this drive is not writable. The drive is a dvd burner but Windows XP is only seeing it as a CD drive.

I hadn't used the burners for a while, now they aren't working (can read from them but most of the time won't write). In the device managerdriveproperties, Win XP sees them all as SCSI devices. How is this possible? The BIOS has them as IDE primary and secondary drives, so where does the SCSI come in? Could this be part of the burning problem I am having?

Now, when I try to burn files to a CD, I get a message telling me to insert a CD-R into the drive? I'm using the program built into Win XP and it seems to start normally, it's just not recognizing the CD-R. Strange, but the CD burner was recording fine until I turned off the services. It plays fine otherwise. I've tried turning services back on but no luck. Does anyone know which service may enable this function?
