All of a sudden, since yesterday, my comp hangs ramdomly. It freezes completely except for the mouse pointer I have noticed that sqmdata and sqmnoopt files appear on my root dir. These are apparently related to the MSN messenger, only I don't use that thingAnyone knows what they are? And if they may be connected to my computer hanging so frequently now?

View 6 Replies View RelatedMy Dell laptop has been periodically going into this phase where the mouse pointer will fill w/ a moving band of colors. It's as though a rainbow is flowing through it. When in this phase, it does this about once every 5 seconds. So, to be clear, it stays in its normal arrow shape, but fills w/ moving color bands rather than the standard white.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm on a new installation of Windows (on a new hard drive), and I was messing around with the nVidia control program a bit ago... I'm not sure if this is what has caused this somewhat amusing "glitch," but at some point in time while using my PC (long after I'd finished playing with nVidia), I noticed that there is a stationary mouse pointer on the right side of my screen, midway between the top & bottom. I tried refreshing my desktop and doing some other stuff, but it's still there. Now, restarting the PC will probably get rid of it, but what is weird is, it's on top of everything! I move my mouse next to it, and the pointer goes under the stationary pointer. I even tried to take a screen capture to show that I have two mouse pointers, but it only showed my working pointer (I used irfanview so it would show it).

I have also looked into changing the smooth mouse curve x and y in the regedit; however, it looks like this only has to do with how fast the pointer accelerates not with how much territory it covers. I would like to change mine so that a smaller movement of the mouse covers more of the display. would changing these values do that?
View 5 Replies View RelatedOn my wife's user account there is this Blubster thing that keeps cropping up and I can't seem to get rid of it. Sometimes I think its using the whole cpu as nothing else opens.The second thing is and it may be connected to the above is that I have just downloaded the updates from windows and it upgraded explorer to, I think its version 7 which looks quite a bit different. Now on my user account it opened with a couple of question boxes etc and appears to work fine. But, when I opened my wife's user account it does very strange things. It open a screen that looks like the new version of windows explorer but nothing further happens. The mouse pointer becomes an I icon and I cant click on anything except the Start button to get out of it.What does it all mean?

Starts/loads fine. Will run fine for days w/ I.E. open, O.E. open=no activity. Upon visiting different internet sites, using, after about 15+ minutes the pointer freezes/no error message/Cont-Alt-Delete provides nothing-can not shut down computer w/ button on CPU , must unplug/restart Several times I have been searching MS for downloads for I.E. -6 (Updates/patches/info) (as in my little mind this is problem) but C. freezes at that point as I click on a link.

I've now set them a couple dozen times, but they always return to the default values after the system is restarted.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy computer (Dell Dimension 2350 running Windows XP SP2, no new hardware or software added in years) turns on, asks me if I want to 'Start Windows Normally', 'Last Known Good Config' and 3 different Safe Modes. It doesn't matter which one I pick, it always starts the Windows splash screen, then goes to a black screen with my mouse pointer (which I can move, but cannot right or left click). Also, the keyboard controls don't seem to work, no ctrl+alt+del, nothing (though if I press shift 5 times it gives me the beep atleast letting me know the keyboard is working). Safe Modes do something a little different, but end up in the same place as the other modes. Safe mode will hang on Mup.sys for a long while before it goes to the black screen with the mouse pointer.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've just taken my brand new desktop system out of the box and there's no Start menu or icons appearing on the desktop. The monitor automatically initiated a startup wizard to select the correct resolution but once that was complete, the desktop was blank (except for the Windows default rolling green hills wallpaper). Not even the mouse pointer is visible. I restarted but after startup it went to the blank picture again. I tried pressing the Windows key on the keyboard,and also tried Ctrl+Alt+delete to get the Task manager but both times nothing happened. All components are plugged in correctly, and I haven't installed any software other than what came installed from the manufacturer (please see specs in my profile); I literally plugged it all in and switched it on.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI consider myself at least a bit competent when it comes to XP and computers... but this problem has me puzzled. I've done tons of searches on google, various forums, microsoft database, etc... and have found some similar problems except that I can't get my taskmanager to become visible. It's there, I know it because I get the resize pointers around the taskmanager's box.
Also, when I start-up WinXP. It gets to the login screen but I can't see my login picture or buttons. I can click on them and enter my password, but when it logs in (the windows start sound plays) the whole screen is black except for the mouse cursor (I don't have a wallpaper, just a black background, so I can't really tell you if my "wallpaper" is still there).
My mom has a laptop that runs mswin xp pro i think or it might be home edition but anyway, she had an optical mouse and it would randomly float to the side of the screen, she replaced the mouse with another mouse. Both mouses were usb.What gives?
View 7 Replies View RelatedThis fight between my computer and me has been going on for over a year & it's getting really annoying - because nothing I've tried works! Symptom: In the middle of doing anything...or even when I'm out of the room and computer is idle...the damned machine just stops! No error message, no BSOD -- nothing. It can happen anywhere from 2 or 3 to maybe 10 times a day. When I'm working, I can tell when computer has hung up because suddenly it ignores a command or keystroke. I can move the mouse pointer around the screen, but the cursor stays in its last functioning shape. Here's a curious thing: no keys work but I can click a mouse button between 6 and 8 times while moving the cursor around, and then the box gives one "beep" sound and that's the end! Now, the mouse cursor won't move either and I have no choice but to power off & then reboot. (<ctrl><alt><del> doesn't work, of course

View 2 Replies View RelatedNo one, even Compaq, can figure this problem out. Most times this happens when I am opening IEXPLORER or sometimes it just seems to happen after it's open. I will attempt to open IEXPLORER and my mouse will hang (stop responding) for about a second, then jump back into action. Say like opening up the web browser, and moving your mouse around in a circle, it stops even though you are still moving it. It also does this just when NOTHING is open on the desktop. Just stops for about a second, then springs back.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using WIN XP PS2 fully updated, and a Logitech Cordless Optical mouse connected via USB port. Whenever I try to Hibernate or Standby, the computer hangs, and I just see the "Preparing to Hibernate..." message.
I searched in a lot of forums, and most suggestions involved updating the Logitech mouse driver. I have the latest driver now (Setpoint 4.00, April '07), and the problem persists.
Note that when I disconnect the mouse from the USB port, I can enter and exit Hibernation or Standby modes without any problems.
I have two computers connected through a home network. One of the computers is very new and the other, two years old.Both run XP-SP2. I use one mouse for both computers - connected through a 2 port KVM switch. On the older machine, the mouse hangs after I close Internet Explorer. After a delay of a minute or so, it does come back most often. This does not ahppen on the new machine. Mouse does not seem to hang after I close other programs..(tested a few, but cant swear by it). This gets very annoying when I am in a rush.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThe light on the tower turns on when I wasn't even using the computer. I turned on the monitor but it just displayed a blank screen like the computer wasn't even on. Before I could do anything, the tower shut down. So I pressed the power button and it wouldn't come on. I, once again, unplugged the tower and plugged it back in to find it working fine. I ran my virus scanner (Norton) and Adaware but got no problems from either of them. So I shut it down and later that night it happened again.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having a serious problem with my computer, and I feel that I have to type this as fast as I can because it's been shutting down very randomly lately.For the last three or four days, my computer has been completely dysfunctional? I suppose. At first, it just wouldn't turn on. I left it for a bit, and it actually would turn on, but it would run so incredibly slowly. I could barely open a program, and when I could OPEN them, they wouldn't run at all. After letting it sit for about two days, I turned it back on, and it works pretty okay for the first hour. The second hour it'll slow right back down, and then spontaneously shut down. I know this sounds like an over-heating problem, so I bought a really intense heavy duty laptop cooling fan to put under it. That doesn't help.
My laptop DOES get hot, but nothing significant, especially with the fan. I figured it might be a virus, so I installed Kaspersky. Kaspersky runs fine, until I get to about 83% and it will continue running, but it will never go past that 83%. (I've let it run for almost 6 hours). I tried Kaspersky in Safe Mode, but my computer spontaneously shut off then too.I have Word 2007 installed, and it won't save any files. It just says, "Word Cannot Save Due To A File Permission Error". And just doesn't. Playing video is useless, because it just stops halfway through whatever media is playing. I've down two system restores to two different points further away, and that hasn't stopped it either.

View 7 Replies View RelatedMy problem as it stands is: My computer randomly reboots when utilizing graphics intensive programs. For example: games such as EverQuest, Final Fantasy XI, Quake III and programs such as Adobe ImageReady CS. I can't seem to establish any patterns between the crashes aside from they all seem to happen in graphics intensive programs (although ImageReady CS doesn't seem to be too graphically intensive to me). For a while, after a random restart, I would get an error saying my system has recovered from a serious error. Now I don't even get that. I just hang up on the "Welcome" screen in XP and have to ctrl+alt+del.When I first had a problem, I also had a problem that seems to be pretty common on the internet - My HD kep crashing and getting write errors to $Mft. So, I took the HD back (before I read about the problem) and it happened on the new hard drive. So, I called my friend and asked to borrow his XP SP1 CD to see if it might have some better effect on the situation than mine (my other friend suggested that it might have some problems copying certain files). When I reformatted and reinstalled with my friends version of XP SP1, I seemed to have no problems at all. No $Mft. Nothing. I upraded my motherboard drivers (including IDE bus/onboard sound/AGP driver), video drivers, directx. Still no problems. Then about 2 weeks after this, I started crashing randomly. I've scanned my computer multiple times for adaware/virus' and nothing has come up, so it's not that.
I've tried reformatting a few times and the same thing ends up happening in the end.I somewhat think its a complication between my video card and my motherboard versus my version of windows XP, and this is why:The odd thing is, if I plug in my old Hard drive (which I used with my new SAPHIRE RADEON 9700 for a little while before replacing it with a new one), I have no problems whatsoever. My computer is completely stable asside from the fact that the hard drive is slow. I replaced my video card about 3 months ago when my old GeForce went out. I used it with that old hard drive for a while with no problem. Then I got a new hard drive to give my computer a new kick -- and now I have nothing but problems.
A while ago, I posted a problem about my computer shutting down and throught I had it fixed after scanning/removing spyware and running disk check. But the last few days it's been happening again. It just shuts down while I'm working on something, either surfing the net, working in psp, working in windows movie maker, checking email, etc. Then I can't turn it back on by pushing the button on the tower. When I look in the back of the tower, the green light for the power isn't on, so I have to push the power cord in and out and jiggle it around a bit to get the green light to turn on and the computer to start up. What could be wrong?
