Splash To Black Screen With Mouse Pointer

My computer (Dell Dimension 2350 running Windows XP SP2, no new hardware or software added in years) turns on, asks me if I want to 'Start Windows Normally', 'Last Known Good Config' and 3 different Safe Modes. It doesn't matter which one I pick, it always starts the Windows splash screen, then goes to a black screen with my mouse pointer (which I can move, but cannot right or left click). Also, the keyboard controls don't seem to work, no ctrl+alt+del, nothing (though if I press shift 5 times it gives me the beep atleast letting me know the keyboard is working). Safe Modes do something a little different, but end up in the same place as the other modes. Safe mode will hang on Mup.sys for a long while before it goes to the black screen with the mouse pointer.

My teenagers were on the computer Sunday night & they called me into the room to show me a black screen with a pointer & nothing else. I turned the computer off & restarted. A box pops up.The top of the box is lsass.exe.In the box is The instruction at 0x00401082 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be written.Click OK to terminate the program.Click CANCEL to debug the program.I tried both & they both go to the black screen with just a pointer. Please let me know what to do. If it helps, I do have the recovery console installed from a previous problem & I'm also communicating to you from the problem computer. I've booted up on a linux disk & I can access the hard drive from here.

I consider myself at least a bit competent when it comes to XP and computers... but this problem has me puzzled. I've done tons of searches on google, various forums, microsoft database, etc... and have found some similar problems except that I can't get my taskmanager to become visible. It's there, I know it because I get the resize pointers around the taskmanager's box.
Also, when I start-up WinXP. It gets to the login screen but I can't see my login picture or buttons. I can click on them and enter my password, but when it logs in (the windows start sound plays) the whole screen is black except for the mouse cursor (I don't have a wallpaper, just a black background, so I can't really tell you if my "wallpaper" is still there).

i'm having to boot into windows xp. on power up sytem goes through the windows xp splash screen (with progress bar) and then instead of login prompt it goes just into the blue screen with moveable mouse pointer arrow.
issue seems to be similar to:

symptoms just before issue - was not able to run use some system features - utility to turn off the display, utility to bring up battery info - everything was working fine before this
what i've tried:
boot to Last Known Good Configuration - resulting in the same blue screen
boot to Safe Mode / Safe Mode with networking / Safe Mode with comman prompt - resulting in blank (black) screen with "Safe Mode" in the corners and moveable mouse test the hardware (hard drive / memory etc.) via build in PC Doctor - all seems to be working
i am able to use bootable XP CD from other machine to get into Recovery Console
i am able to boot to simple live XP using BartPE-XPE usb key and access the hard drive

Was working fine this morning but this afternoon - Upon startup everything runs fine until after the windows splash screen everything goes black and the only thing visable is a cursor, but nothing to click, cannot ctrl=alt=del, cannot right click. Cannot enter safe mode at all, last good configuration doesn't work either. Computer is still running, fan whirring, lights flashing. Fan has been cleaned and power supply checked, no change. Cannot get into anything to run explorer or virus check. She is running Windows XP SP3. I'm unsure of when sp3 was installed. I understand this may be an issue, along with video and graphics drivers, display settings, corrupt registry, flat CMOS battery or loose internal connections.

Ive done a fair amount of searching online and tried a number of things myself, needless to say, they didnt work.Ok, so here's the issue; When I go to turn on my computer, I make it to the XP splash screen with the 3 blue bubbles moving left to right... But nothing from there.Additionally, between the BIOS screen and the XP splash screen, theres some weird black screen with what looks like a long barcode-esq bar, where a solid white line fills the gaps moving left to right...

I have a ibm think pad with windows xp on. It will boot upto the windows xp loading screen with the loading bar and then when it should move onto the log on screen it brings up a blank page with a small mouse cursor. When i boot it up in safe mode it comes up with a bigger mouse cursor. I have tried pressing control alt delete and buttons like space bar to see if they work but still nothing.

When ever i start up windows it get threw the Windows boot screen then whens it suppose to come to the logon screen i see only black for no matter how long i leave it on!, i can still move the mouse, and thats all that happens i have a operating system cd, and if i got to repair windows what config do i type?

My Dell laptop has been periodically going into this phase where the mouse pointer will fill w/ a moving band of colors. It's as though a rainbow is flowing through it. When in this phase, it does this about once every 5 seconds. So, to be clear, it stays in its normal arrow shape, but fills w/ moving color bands rather than the standard white.

So yesterday my computer suddenly started getting slow, so I rebooted. When the machine boots, it's all fine, but just after the Windows loading screen, the screen goes black, and the only thing that's active is the mouse cursos which I can move. But I can't right click or anything etc.I can't bring up the Task Manager. I try loading in safe mode but it's still all black, with the expection that the text "Safe mode" is written around the black screen.So what I did was I got a Ultimate Boot CD and loaded from it. I managed to roll back my windows registry to 2003 (manufactor fresh), and now windows actually loaded and I didn't get the black screen anymore, however obviously it was all a complete mess having a registry from so long ago, so I backup rolled it back to the current again, and the black screen returned.
With that logic, shouldn't it be possible to do some tweaks to the registry to solve this issue? I'm a complete beginner and I barely even know the function of the registry. Everything i've tried so far i've just managed to google and follow step by step instructions, so bare with me. But judging from the tools in the Ultimate Boot CD, I can access the windows registry.So basically, where do I take it from here?

I'm on a new installation of Windows (on a new hard drive), and I was messing around with the nVidia control program a bit ago... I'm not sure if this is what has caused this somewhat amusing "glitch," but at some point in time while using my PC (long after I'd finished playing with nVidia), I noticed that there is a stationary mouse pointer on the right side of my screen, midway between the top & bottom. I tried refreshing my desktop and doing some other stuff, but it's still there. Now, restarting the PC will probably get rid of it, but what is weird is, it's on top of everything! I move my mouse next to it, and the pointer goes under the stationary pointer. I even tried to take a screen capture to show that I have two mouse pointers, but it only showed my working pointer (I used irfanview so it would show it).

I would like to make my mouse more sensitive in xp pro. I have the pointer speed turned up to the max. I have also looked into changing the smooth mouse curve x and y in the regedit; however, it looks like this only has to do with how fast the pointer accelerates not with how much territory it covers. I would like to change mine so that a smaller movement of the mouse covers more of the display. would changing these values do that?

On my wife's user account there is this Blubster thing that keeps cropping up and I can't seem to get rid of it. Sometimes I think its using the whole cpu as nothing else opens.The second thing is and it may be connected to the above is that I have just downloaded the updates from windows and it upgraded explorer to, I think its version 7 which looks quite a bit different. Now on my user account it opened with a couple of question boxes etc and appears to work fine. But, when I opened my wife's user account it does very strange things. It open a screen that looks like the new version of windows explorer but nothing further happens. The mouse pointer becomes an I icon and I cant click on anything except the Start button to get out of it.What does it all mean?

in control panel, I got an error message that read "Cwindows/system32/windows default file is missing or corrupt" I tried to click ok, but the window won't close. What can I do?

All of a sudden recently, my mouse pointer hangs then freezes my PC. I have to reboot and everything is fine until the next time. I have run all my spyware/ anti-virus and it shows nothing. Is it time for a new mouse or is there a setting I am not familiar with?

Starts/loads fine. Will run fine for days w/ I.E. open, O.E. open=no activity. Upon visiting different internet sites, using, after about 15+ minutes the pointer freezes/no error message/Cont-Alt-Delete provides nothing-can not shut down computer w/ button on CPU , must unplug/restart Several times I have been searching MS for downloads for I.E. -6 (Updates/patches/info) (as in my little mind this is problem) but C. freezes at that point as I click on a link.

I'm finding that every time I restart my computer, and changes I had previously made to the mouse pointer speed in the control panel are lost (reset to default values). I've now set them a couple dozen times, but they always return to the default values after the system is restarted.

All of a sudden, since yesterday, my comp hangs ramdomly. It freezes completely except for the mouse pointer I have noticed that sqmdata and sqmnoopt files appear on my root dir. These are apparently related to the MSN messenger, only I don't use that thingAnyone knows what they are? And if they may be connected to my computer hanging so frequently now?

Whenever I take a CD out of the burner and close the tray, an annoying cd icon flashes at the mouse pointer.This will happen if I just use a CD or burn a CD. I have windows XP Pro and am using a Cyber Drive CW079D CD R/RW.

I've just taken my brand new desktop system out of the box and there's no Start menu or icons appearing on the desktop. The monitor automatically initiated a startup wizard to select the correct resolution but once that was complete, the desktop was blank (except for the Windows default rolling green hills wallpaper). Not even the mouse pointer is visible. I restarted but after startup it went to the blank picture again. I tried pressing the Windows key on the keyboard,and also tried Ctrl+Alt+delete to get the Task manager but both times nothing happened. All components are plugged in correctly, and I haven't installed any software other than what came installed from the manufacturer (please see specs in my profile); I literally plugged it all in and switched it on.

We've had 3 cases today of people who cannot login at all.After the boot, they only get the Windows blue screen(not the BSOD),the mouse pointer is there (you can move it and everything...), but there's no Windows logon box (where you type ctrl+alt+del , and enter your username and password).The problem is the same if I try to boot in safe mode...It happened on two different PCs (different hardware), and also on a Lenovo T60.

Very similar to the following problem but i do not have a raid, and it seems that this PC has a raid and i don't, plus it was never really determined what the actual solution was.

The basics: XP Professional Boot up screen, right before the windows loading screen, or direct after the F8 Menu if you hit "Start Windows Normally..." it will just lock up, no HDD activity, blank screen. now BSOD, nothing.
All 3 safe mods work fine.
Ran chkdsk /r in recovery.
Ran proper fixboot procedure.
Went into safe mode and checked the event viewer.
The only concerning message i got was: The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
AmdK8
Fips
nod32drv
Formatting really isnt an issue since i can back up anything i need through safe mode. However its just the fact that the Windows gremlin has struck me again and i must defeat it once more.
I highly doubt this is a hardware issue as it is more of a driver/software issue.any help?

Dell Insprion 1200 laptop has a frozen touchpad pointer. I know this isn't the most desirable computer but she only uses for e-bay and e-mails. It was in the shop a couple of weeks ago to have the AC plug in the back of the computer changed. It seemed to work fine for a couple of days before the pointer froze. I've turned it off and unplugged the battery and AC cord, reinstalled both and turned on, pointer still frozen. I tried Fn + F9; still didn't work. I also tried system restore and it still doesn't work.

I boot my xp machine but it hangs at the xp splash screen.It's not like it's frozen, the blue bar under the "windows" just scrolls and scrolls and scrolls, etc. The same happens when I try booting to VGA mode.I am able to boot to safe mode, just not completely. I get to a screen that says " Safe mode Microsoft (R) Windows XP (R) (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.05001-119: Service Pack 2) Safe Mode.I can also see the mouse moving around, just nothing else. Nothing was added, removed or installed.

This problem started several days ago. On restart the XP splash screen loads but freezes as the progress bar is in motion. After rebooting several times it does load to the desktop, but on restarting again it hangs.
I have searched reference articles, forums, etc and have found others have the same problem and have narrowed it down to nvidia drivers and hardware conflicts that load after 'mup.sys' in the boot up process.I had installed a nvidia graphics card and driver before this problem began but then uninstalled, deciding to keep the on board sis igp. I have downloaded driver cleaner and removed all traces of the nvidia driver but the problem persists..I am running XP sp2, p4 3ghz, foxconn motherboard, sis 661fx graphics.

My PC has developed a problem and I'm looking a solution. What I'm seeing is that when I boot my PC, it gets to the splash screen and I see the scroller moving but that's it. No color changes no BSOD, etc. At this point, I've been able to restore my system using an Acronis full system recovery but I would like to know what's going on behind the scenes when the progress bar moves but nothing.

I'm getting a BSOD. Everything seems fine--it is at least getting to the boot.ini since I get an OS selection--W2K or the Recovery Console. The W2K splash screen comes up, the blue hash marks scroll about half way across the bottom, halt, then BSOD "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE". I tried the Recovery console, but that BSODs as well. I used ERD to run CHKDSK --- no errors. Possibly the hdd? ERD took a loooong time to read what OSs were on the hdd--five minutes.
