View 6 RepliesI am using Outlook Express 6 in XP Home and the newsreader still makes mistakes assigning the newsgroup reply to the wrong news server. My understanding is that this bug was solved by an update.
View 8 Replies View RelatedWindows XP Home is another story. As a consumer product, it suffers from two policy deficiencies. First, consumer products do not qualify for Extended Support, but instead move directly into the online support phase after Mainstream Support ends. Second, whereas business products are guaranteed Mainstream Support for two years beyond the release of the next subsequent version of a product (in this case, Windows Vista), consumer products do not get this built-in transitional period. The end result is that Windows XP Home will leave Mainstream Support and enter online support on January 1, 2007in less than a year. When that day comes, XP Home users may feel left out in the cold, because they will no longer qualify for security updates, and will not be able to purchase support from Microsoft. Finding this situation somewhat alarming, I contacted Microsoft's representation to clarify the matter. A Microsoft spokesman relayed the following to me. Originally Posted by Microsoft spokesman "For consumer products, security updates will be available through the end of the mainstream phase. For Windows XP Home Edition, there will be no security updates after 12/31/06." Regarding paid support for problems unrelated to security patches, I was told that "Users who want to continue to receive support after the Microsoft assisted and paid support offerings have ended may visit the Retired Product Support Options Web site." I urge Microsoft to reconsider this stance. There should be considerably more overlap in support for their consumer OS. While five years of support for XP Home may have seemed reasonable when it was expected that there would be little more than three years between major OS updates, the time it has taken to bake Windows Vista has thrown this out entirely. If Vista launches in October, it would give users a mere two months to move to the OS, or risk being unsupported. Yikes makes me glad that I only use for my family and me XP Pro (and actually I don't really like Microsoft due to the fact that they have a monopoly and are quite greedy so the vast majority of my computing tasks are done on a mac running MacOS X 10.4.6) which should receive a much longer period of support due to it being used for businesses (however it still has great gaming support)

View 2 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to trace the route that a posting to newsgroups takes from my computer to a destination news server? I am having a problem with one particular moderated newsgroup where my postings are not reaching the
moderators and are simply disappearing.
A thread here,I was trying to use the news reader part of outlook express and it could read all of the post correctly. The only problem is when I click on New Post or Reply Post, I could see the frame of text editor opened up with no button on it and then tells me that Outlook Express has encountered an error and needs to close, blah blah blah.
I looked through the error reporting file and was told that ntdll.dll was the troublemaker, here is the error reporting file that Outlook Express asked me to send to Microsoft:

I know nothing about computers but my boyfriend knows a lot and this has even stumped him. I keep getting notices about having the w32.spybot.worm on my computer. We've followed the instructions on symantec for removal, didn't work. We've formatted it by deleting the partitions, still came back. Then we did a low-level format, and it still came back. The website at symantec says it comes from Kazaa?! I don't have kazaa, and never have. I run Norton virus checks and it doesn't find it, or it says it already deleted it. I search my computer and delete all the little tftp zero byte files. They keep coming back, and I don't know what to do.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSo you are one of the hundreds of thousands of people that did not update your computer in time. No problem, just follow the instructions below to remove the worm from your system. Some users that are infected with the worm have a hard time updating and removing the worm because the system automatically pops up a message informing the user that the machine is going to shut down in 60 seconds. To stop your machine from shutting down one this message is displayed, simply go to the start menu and select run. Then type shutdown -a in the text box and click the OK button. This will stop the machine from shutting down. Now the first step is to apply the security patch to your system. We will remove the worm in step three but first it is important to update your system to make it secure. To update your system, click the link below for your operating system and download the file to your computer.
Windows XP Users - Click Here - Windows 2000 Users - Click Here - Windows NT Users - Click Here - Other Versions of this patch - Click HereNow that you have the patch downloaded to your computer, simply run the file from the location that you saved it at. Follow the on screen directions and keep clicking next. Now that the security hole in your system is fixed, it is time to remove the worm. To remove the worm, just download a special program that Symantec developed by clicking here. Once you have downloaded the program, run it and click the start button to start the search for the worm in your system. When it finds traces of the worm, allow the program to delete the files to rid your system of the worm. That's it. Now you should have a worm free system.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI've tried Norton, Ad-Aware SE, Spybot, unintalling and reinstalling, and I still have this worm. Basically, it just sends an IM to anybody I'm talking to, saying check this out: and then a hyperlink. I don't know if this is the best place to come but its the only place I could find. Could somebody either tell me how to fix this or point me in the right direction to somebody who can?
View 3 Replies View Relatedwell, i have reinstalled my os which is windows xp emachines model: t5048.
my computer is running normal, sometimes faster, and at times, there's this error popping up saying "oops! unable to contact server!" i get that out, and every site i go in it says "page error" as if the internet connection broke or something. so, when i reset my computer, it works again, but it just keeps on doing it. i only go to Internet, myspace, yahoo, and google most of the time. is there another type of virus in my system?
