Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File
well, I managed to screw up my winxp reinstall in a big way. I'm very upset over it since its my sis-in-laws computer. Before, she could not access the internet, but at least she could boot up WinXP and play games, access her email and all of her programs on the desktop...now...nothing but the following popup error message:Error: One of the files containing the system registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternate copy. The recovery was successful then the popup disappears and sends me to a blue screen (long) message starting with this.

View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen I booted up my computer this morning, Windows loaded, I signed in, and then it took nearly an hour and a half to get the program icons to come up on the desktop. When I try to open one, it can take upwards of 20 minutes to do so, then response within the program is no better. It seems like all the resources are under use, but no one can see what's bogging it down.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI recently found out through my last windows upgrade that I might be using a counterfeit copy of windows. I wasn't aware of this like I'm sure many, so I read where I could purchase for 149.00 a windows upgrade tool and make my windows XP GENUINE. On line I purchased the upgrade tool. I gave microsoft 149.00 and two days later an email came with product key and took me to a sight to run software to check to see if windows was intact. It ran flawlessly and checked my windows xp and said it was complete. Congraltions menu. After a reboot a message came up that I must activate this windows program. I tried to activate it by online, following instructions, but error said my product key wasn't valid. I then called and spoke with three different activation techs that were unable to help and said I needed the CD.

View 11 Replies View RelatedToday I found a file in my hard drive's root that was called simply "L" (no extension). When I opened it in a text editor, I found it was a listing of my hard drive's entire contents---in the standard DOS "dir /w" format, but with all my folders and all they files they contained. I can't imagine why any program I use would create such a file. Could this be virus-related? I use a firewall and an up-to-date AV program, and a SpyBot scan showed nothing. Thanks for your suggestions.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy PC was recently infected with a virus (Antivirus GT) and although I'm sure I've cleared it by running i0Bit 360 and Malwarebytes anti malware, none of the desktop icons or the task bar appear on start up.I can still access programs through the task manager (File, new task, run)and all my files are still present but obviously, I would like to return my computer to it's former working state. I do not have all the system recovery disks and could not find system restore or safe mode on the computer so I'm hoping there is a way of doing this without the use of CD's.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a nightmare with my notebook which is installed with Norton Internet Security. On booting up the notebook, a triangular icon(inside with an exclamation mark or an X)appeared on the bottom right bar. The icon appeared with a message to warn me of spyware attack. On clicking the icon, it took me to IE for http://www.spylocked.com/?aff=334 or http://www.wayofprotection.com/soft/. I also found my IE is installed with a 'Security Toolbar 7.1'.
In the Control Panel, I found a program 'Internet Explorer Secure Bar' which I wanted to delete. However, once I click the 'change/move' button to delete the program, it required me to reboot before deleting but on reboot, no deletion of the program took place. I want to know how to delete the program.I also want to know how to delete the icon on the right bottom.
I seem to be having trouble with both of my PC's (dell dim 2400's with XP home) accessing the Windows Update site. I can never get on and get the usual page suggesting to try later or try downloading manually, which I can't do either. None of my System Restore points work (on either one)! Also, our DSL connection is working fine, as for as IE6 goes. (I can get Google, Yahoo, Bestbuy.com, ect.) I can't access the msn web-site either and Outlook Express 2003 hangs during the receiving part. I've tried Trend-Micro's Housecall and it cleaned several trojans, but I still have the same problems. I've never experienced this "Denial of Service" attacks.
