View 3 RepliesI'm using XP Home Edition with SP2 and Norton AV alerts to a virus attack by W32.Gaobot.SN the first time I go online each day. Six messages - unable to repair, access denied, auto deleted, unable to repair, access denied, auto deleted. Followed removal info but the values mentioned were not in the registry and nothing found in the scan. A few days later Norton found 3 infected files of trojan languard.exe. It's in the registry but I don't dare delete it from there as XP came installed on my pc and doesn't seem to have backup utility.

Windows XP is the operating system. When booting up, error message states that the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>system32hal.dll Please reinstall a copy of the above file. I've tried numerous programs and software packages that "guarantee" results but none have accomplished anything except wasting my time and money.

View 5 Replies View RelatedToday I found a file in my hard drive's root that was called simply "L" (no extension). When I opened it in a text editor, I found it was a listing of my hard drive's entire contents---in the standard DOS "dir /w" format, but with all my folders and all they files they contained. I can't imagine why any program I use would create such a file. Could this be virus-related? I use a firewall and an up-to-date AV program, and a SpyBot scan showed nothing. Thanks for your suggestions.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy PC was recently infected with a virus (Antivirus GT) and although I'm sure I've cleared it by running i0Bit 360 and Malwarebytes anti malware, none of the desktop icons or the task bar appear on start up.I can still access programs through the task manager (File, new task, run)and all my files are still present but obviously, I would like to return my computer to it's former working state. I do not have all the system recovery disks and could not find system restore or safe mode on the computer so I'm hoping there is a way of doing this without the use of CD's.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a nightmare with my notebook which is installed with Norton Internet Security. On booting up the notebook, a triangular icon(inside with an exclamation mark or an X)appeared on the bottom right bar. The icon appeared with a message to warn me of spyware attack. On clicking the icon, it took me to IE for http://www.spylocked.com/?aff=334 or http://www.wayofprotection.com/soft/. I also found my IE is installed with a 'Security Toolbar 7.1'.
In the Control Panel, I found a program 'Internet Explorer Secure Bar' which I wanted to delete. However, once I click the 'change/move' button to delete the program, it required me to reboot before deleting but on reboot, no deletion of the program took place. I want to know how to delete the program.I also want to know how to delete the icon on the right bottom.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to cleanup a machine running Windows 2000 (not sure what release).I've run AntiVir, Spybot, Adaware, and CWShredder, but am still experiencig problems. For example, I can't change the default home URL from 'about:blank'. AntiVir found many archieves (probably more than 30) with 'infected file' that couldn't be deleted. Most of them appeared to be .dat files, but one was a .cab file (polmx2), which I suspect is part of the problem. I'm also guessing there may be hidden files becuase I couldn't 'find' them in Windows.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was infected by a virus while changing to a different AV software. After a full day of cleaning, I have a perfectly usable and clean computer, however, my c: and d: drives are not displaying in my computer. They are listed in device manager, disk manager, and I can access programs off of them c: is my boot drive just nothing in my computer.I was able to create a shortcut to both of their root directories so I can browse them. All windows programs show them as viable drives and will browse, so this is more of a nuisance than a dire situation, however, it is a bit crippling.
View 4 Replies View Relatedi got a series of really bad viral infection on my computer. My virus programs took care of the viruses but also deleted some of the start up software that is used to boot up my computer correctly. as a last ditch effort I used the system restore function on my computer to reboot it back to a previous configeration. The computer booted back to its original out of the box configuration and I lost all my computer files (but on the flip side my computer was working perfectly now that this was done)
I take the computer to the repair shop so that they can do a deep memory scan to recover my files. They find some of the files and put them in a file folder located on my desktop. i am told by the techie working on my computer that there is a series of .dll errors at the start of windows and that they are the result of a viral infection (Obviously the system restore i did did not do its job of ridding me of the viruses. I did not notice the .dll errors when i initially did the system restore, but that doesn't mean that they weren't there)
I just ran Defrag and got the image as shown above after completion of the defrag. It does not look like anything happened, maybe even worse than before defrag. Any ideas as to how I can get a good defrag on this machine or what is happening here. I have run two malware applications or programs and my antivirus. Nothing there it appears to be clean.

When i restarted the computer, windows opened but i cud only see my wallpaper, no desktop or start menu. All programs are working, the only thing is that i have to start whatever i want to use using the task manager.

I hadn't installed anything new (but I have installed things since). Everything goes fine, Windows starts, I get the welcome screen, that dissapears and my desktop show up but it takes at least 3 to 4 minutes before my icons and start bar show up. I just restarted now to test and it took 6 minutes. I ran Ad-Aware and scanned for virus' last Wednesday. Still crawling, but otherwise, once it starts, performance has not declined.
