Ntdll.dll In Outlook Express News Reader

Mar 30, 2007

A thread here,I was trying to use the news reader part of outlook express and it could read all of the post correctly. The only problem is when I click on New Post or Reply Post, I could see the frame of text editor opened up with no button on it and then tells me that Outlook Express has encountered an error and needs to close, blah blah blah.

I looked through the error reporting file and was told that ntdll.dll was the troublemaker, here is the error reporting file that Outlook Express asked me to send to Microsoft:

It has happened every time without failure, and even after I have re-installed the entire Windows XP system, the problem would come up again.
I am using an IBM Thinkpad T42 with Pentium M 1.6GHz processor and 1.2GB of RAM, I have the automatic update enabled to install all the software patches from Microsoft and so on.

Bad News For Home Users...

Apr 25, 2006

Windows XP Home is another story. As a consumer product, it suffers from two policy deficiencies. First, consumer products do not qualify for Extended Support, but instead move directly into the online support phase after Mainstream Support ends. Second, whereas business products are guaranteed Mainstream Support for two years beyond the release of the next subsequent version of a product (in this case, Windows Vista), consumer products do not get this built-in transitional period. The end result is that Windows XP Home will leave Mainstream Support and enter online support on January 1, 2007in less than a year. When that day comes, XP Home users may feel left out in the cold, because they will no longer qualify for security updates, and will not be able to purchase support from Microsoft. Finding this situation somewhat alarming, I contacted Microsoft's representation to clarify the matter. A Microsoft spokesman relayed the following to me. Originally Posted by Microsoft spokesman "For consumer products, security updates will be available through the end of the mainstream phase. For Windows XP Home Edition, there will be no security updates after 12/31/06." Regarding paid support for problems unrelated to security patches, I was told that "Users who want to continue to receive support after the Microsoft assisted and paid support offerings have ended may visit the Retired Product Support Options Web site." I urge Microsoft to reconsider this stance. There should be considerably more overlap in support for their consumer OS. While five years of support for XP Home may have seemed reasonable when it was expected that there would be little more than three years between major OS updates, the time it has taken to bake Windows Vista has thrown this out entirely. If Vista launches in October, it would give users a mere two months to move to the OS, or risk being unsupported. Yikes makes me glad that I only use for my family and me XP Pro (and actually I don't really like Microsoft due to the fact that they have a monopoly and are quite greedy so the vast majority of my computing tasks are done on a mac running MacOS X 10.4.6) which should receive a much longer period of support due to it being used for businesses (however it still has great gaming support)

SOMEONE HELP, Waiting For Hours With No Reply. Slow Window Opening.

Feb 17, 2008

I have a recent problem where my computer will spend anywhere from 5-10 seconds switching to a different window. It doesn't matter whether it is loaded or not. For instance, I'll have 2 MSN conversations open where I can see both at the same time, and no matter what I'm doing, it will take the same amount of time just to switch over to say "lol".

This is very annoying, because if an error comes up (in any program) that requires opening a new window, it will take 10 seconds to load, and then 10 seconds to respond to me clicking "ok". I am wasting so much time waiting, and it is becoming one of the most aggravating issues I've ever had.

This also applies to clicking on anything on the start bar at any time, minimizing, maximizing, or changing size to any window ever. It doesn't effect anything that happens within any programs itself that aren't window related.

I'm using XP and have 2 gb of RAM.

Assigning Drive Letters In Installation?

Nov 23, 2007

I have this Dell L733r that I installed WinXP on. It also has an internal 250mb zip drive as a slave drive which is on the same cable as the DVD rom installed on [1]. When I installed WinXP, the main hard drive (master) [0] ended up with a drive letter of [e]. The DVD rom was D and the zip drive was [c]. Is there anyway to avoid this short of disconnecting the zip drive? But it would seem that you wouldn't have to discconnect the zip drive.

Assigning Extra Keys On Keyboard?

Jan 31, 2005

I'm wondering about something thats been bugging me for a bit? What are the extra keys on the keyboard for, or more to the point how does one configure them. The KB I use right now only has three extra keys, a sun, a moon, and another(?) I think for power, or stand bye?? But my sisters KB has mega, hers is a MSN 'netboard'. Is there somewhere I can learn how to utilize the extra keys. When I press any of them now they don't do anything?? Help is appreciated, but this is not a pressing,(pretty punny eh), matter, so please help those who really have a problem first! This is just something I have always wanted to know?? I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one?? So Thanks again, Graiskye PS just to be clear I have done a pretty good search of archives before posting question, something I encourage ALL posters to do, saves redundant posts, and you will ALWAYS learn something. I browse the posts all the time just reading the titles and checking threads that interest?

Problem Importing SQL Server 2000 - Bak Files Into SQL Server 2005

Sep 11, 2006

The procedure is as follows:

Right-click databases -> Restore Database

I mark 'from device', click the '...' button & select 'File' in the dropdown, then brows to the file itself. Under 'select the backup sets to restore' I check the only checkbox there, then in the 'To Database' I select the name of the database in the file (a new DB name appears there as you select the file).

Unable To Sync To Time Server - RPC Server Is Unavailable

Aug 8, 2007

XP Pro SP2, all latest updates. When I reboot, I can correctly sync to a time server, but after an unknown amount of time it goes back to saying "The RPC server is unavailable" instantly after clicking Update Now, regardless of what server I tell it to sync to. I also noticed that if I view my nForce Networking Controller status, then click Properties and go to the Authentication tab, everything is greyed out. If I hit OK without changing anything (I can't change it even if I wanted to), a message pops up saying "An unexpected condition occured. Not all of your requested changes in settings could be made" and just goes back to that window. I have to hit cancel to close it

Assigning Already Used Drive Letter To USB Flash Drive?

Jul 14, 2005

On our WinXP systems (SP1 & 2), when users attempt to us usb flash drives, sometimes the O/S tries to assign an already used network drive letter to the device, making it unaccessible. Of course, the non-admin users can't use drive manager to change the drive letter. Is their a way around this problem?

Terminal Server License Server?

Dec 21, 2006

I'm looking at setting up windows 2003 terminal servers all over the place to replace the awful thing people are currently doing here - vncing servers with one small shared password among everyone <holding my hands over my ears for the backlash>. Don't blame me, it's another awful legacy I have to get rid of...

1. I've got to set up a Terminal Server Licensing server and was thinking about putting this on my second domain controller. I was wondering what would happen in this server dies, though. Is there some way of having resilience in this scenario? Perhaps a second Licensing server or something, the way you have 2 or more Domain Controllers?

Recording Every Detail An Installation Makes?

Oct 11, 2006

In the days of Windows 3.1, I had a program called In Control. Before installing a program, I would start InControl and it would then monitor and record every change to the system made by the installation, every line added to WINDOWS.INI, SYSTEM.INI, every file added or modified and even recorded changes in file time stamps and versions for DLLs etc.Is there anything that thorough for Windows 2000/XP. I want to be able to examine such a record that would not only record file version changes and files added or modified but also every line added, deleted or changed in the Windows Registry. Is there such a utility that really gets it all, down to the last detail?
