I have be given a EX-coworkers Laptop. Running XP Professional. In the systems properties/under the general tab it has Registered to: EX coworkers name. My boss ask me to change it to the company name. Can this be done.
I'm having a problem with my desktop. I keep placing my icons where I want them on the desktop and every time I either reboot or refresh the desktop they jumble up again. The only thing I have checked in the properties menu is "Show Desktop Icons". I have installed "Icon Restore" and it works until I run a program, open a browser, or even open "My Computer". When I close whatever I am working on and return to the desktop, everything is jumbled again. In addition, the taskbar properties keep changing on reboot. On the Properties menu I have "Keep the taskbar on top" etc., "Group similar" etc., and "Show Quick Launch" checked. I also have several items in the notifications area set to "always show". On reboot, the "Show Quick Launch" becomes unchecked, and the notification area items either change to "hide when inactive" or become part of the "Past Items" list.
Am having a problem with Display Properties in WinXP-2. During the first 5 minutes after boot-up, screen resolution on my desk top is unstable with icon and window sizes changing from large to small and vice-versa. Resetting the Display Properties during this time has no effect. When the system warms up the problem is gone. Can the Monitor itself be the problem, or is it most likely the Video Card? I don't have another monitor to use as a test unit.
I have files in my recycle bin. My recycle bin shows nothing when I open the folder but there is 6 items in the folder. I have tried to delete them through C: ecycler but when I try that I get an error on the bottom of my screen that says The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.
I usually backup my weeks work on Friday afternoons. What I do is run a "search" for all files created or modified within the last 7 days and then "copy" all relevant files to a folder on an external hard drive, and then burn a CD.
Everynow and then, I get the following message. "Cannot Copy File: Cannot Read From the Source File or Disk"
after a search, when I click on a file and try to delete it, do I often get a msg. saying: Cannot delete file:Cannot read from the source file or disk If it found it for the search, why can't if read it from the source file or disk
I cant deleted this file on my desktop. It is an empty file(0 bytes), I tried renaming it and tried deleting it in safe mode. still I get " Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk." I did a search for the file and nothing shows! not even the actual file that is on my desktop. So used "registry cleaner" to see if it will delete it...nope. I tried safe mode again and the same problem. I ran AVG, Norton, Escan, Hijack, all came clean. nothing wrong.
I am trying to access the file properties area on a .jpg file. I like to put the descrepption of the picture in the PROPERTY section of the file where is says SUMMARY. I have typed in the description and save it but when I go back to the file there is nothing there. (I right click on the file and go to PROPERTIES and then click on SUMMARY-ADVANCED) .
On windows 98 you can simply right click the file name and change its file type. Example: image.bmp can be right clicked and changed to image.gif.I was wondering how you could do that on XP.
I keep my pictures in a CD-ROM. I transferred some of them to my hard drive and started editing them using PaintShop 9. When I tried to save them a message showed up saying:Quote Could not save file because it is marked Read only. Chane the "read only" attribute" using Windows Explorer. UnQuote How should I do that?
Does anyone know of a way to get the file/folder properties page from a cmd prompt as though you have just gone and right-clicked the file/folder in the gui, The reason I ask is because I may have a user logged in and need to look at the file/folder properties (specifically the ntfs permissions) and because they are logged in as a user account and have no access to the folder they cannot even see the security tab of the properties box. So I need a way from the command prompt to open the properties box of a file/folder (as I have done a runas to get an admin prompt inside their user gui session. Looking at security settings in a cmd program may also be of some interest if anyone knows that either
Using Windows Professional XP: How do you control what is displayed when you "hover" over the file entry in Windows Explorer? My home system shows all kinds of information; File type, Date modified, Size, etc. While a system I use at work only shows File type.

When I tried restoring my Microsoft Outlook 2003 files to my machine from a Novastor 7 backup, the files restored, but I only get "Access Denied" messages when I try to access them in any way. I'm assuming, because of the the old permissions. How I can regain access to them?
I am running Windows XP, had to run a Windows repair. I am the owner / administrator of my pc. Since the repair, it seems I have lost ownership, permissions or attributes to my files. I will try to explain as best as I can. if I create a document and save it to an existing folder most of the time I can still access that <ocument. I have the same issue if scan a document, then save to a folder...I can usually still access but I never know, sometimes I can't. BUT, if I create a new folder and copy or move a document into the new folder I no longer have access to that file. Once the document has been moved into a folder I will get an error message saying Cannot access (filename). The document may be read-only or encrypted. I click on ok and a second message appears saying (filename) cannot be accessed. The file may be corrupted, located on a server that is not responding, or read-only. I cannot figure out whats triggering it. Ive checked folder properties >sharing> some(but not all)of the folders have the make this folder private checked and I cannot change it. These seem to be the folders that are denying me access to my documents.
I have a folder on my C drive that does not have a name. I am unable to move or delete, or rename the folder. It contains no sub-folders or files. I get the message " cannot delete file. Cannot read from the source file or disk.

I run Windows XP Home Edition. I have recently installed an Apache server, and have my website running from my computer, but have a few problems. My comp recently just caught an virus and I have tired many anti-virus programs to remove it and so far, no luck.Avast reported the file that is infected, but is unable to delete it. So I decided to check it myself, it's a file in my systems/drivers and when I tired to delete it. It saids the following "Cannot delete uwvwibuv: Cannot read from the source file or disk.". I have tired using "Unlock" to delete it, doesn't work.Note, this virus is also causing all my anti-virus programs not to connect online, so I cannot update them. I have tried using Malwarebytes-antiware, doesn't detect it. I can't use system restore because it's being blocked by group policy after "I caught the virus" (Worked before).I had tired running in safe mode, checking task for unknown programs, and I can't delete it.
Until recently just the usual Windows files in the Background file list in Display Properties/Desktop. Recently the list grows day by day it seems with a variety of files from My Pictures folder. Now takes quite a while to open the desktop option. Possibly linked to Picasa some way. How can I get rid of them without deleting the photo file ?
I unchecked the address bar, & cannot get it back. I have re checked it, but I only get the word "address", on the far right side of the standard buttons bar.I am probably over looking something simple,
