Page File Impossible To Alter
Jan 11, 2005I have 256 MB stick of ram in this system. when i attempt to set my pagefile to static custom size of 800 initial 800 maximum, even in registry, i click set, and reboot the computer. when it restarts its back at the system managed size of 383. if i change to safe mode, i can set it jsut fine and it saets and stays at 800. however when i reboot after setting it into the safemode, ITS BACK AT 383! EVEN THOUGH THE CUSTOM SETTINGS ARE STILL SET, IT nags AT ME ABOUT VIRTUAL MEMORY BEING TO LOW!@!
This is really offensive to me because i can handle almsot any xp problem and this keeps bugging the crap out of me. i cant run with this crappy of a system without that pagefile being set right and i need this solution ASAP >.<

Dec 5, 2007I got a hard drive out of a computer running windows XP home (this computer was not booting in to windows), so I put the hard drive in a caddy and plugged it via USB in to another system so I can get photos, etc, off the hard drive before doing a reinstall of windows. I can look at the files on the HDD I have in the caddy but I do no have permission to open or copy/paste these photos or any other files under the user account I was using as I had a password on this account

Cannot Delete File - Read From The Source File Or Disk?
Jul 18, 2005I cant deleted this file on my desktop. It is an empty file(0 bytes), I tried renaming it and tried deleting it in safe mode. still I get " Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk." I did a search for the file and nothing shows! not even the actual file that is on my desktop. So used "registry cleaner" to see if it will delete it...nope. I tried safe mode again and the same problem. I ran AVG, Norton, Escan, Hijack, all came clean. nothing wrong.

Jun 8, 2009I am running Windows XP, had to run a Windows repair. I am the owner / administrator of my pc. Since the repair, it seems I have lost ownership, permissions or attributes to my files. I will try to explain as best as I can. if I create a document and save it to an existing folder most of the time I can still access that <ocument. I have the same issue if scan a document, then save to a folder...I can usually still access but I never know, sometimes I can't. BUT, if I create a new folder and copy or move a document into the new folder I no longer have access to that file. Once the document has been moved into a folder I will get an error message saying Cannot access (filename). The document may be read-only or encrypted. I click on ok and a second message appears saying (filename) cannot be accessed. The file may be corrupted, located on a server that is not responding, or read-only. I cannot figure out whats triggering it. Ive checked folder properties >sharing> some(but not all)of the folders have the make this folder private checked and I cannot change it. These seem to be the folders that are denying me access to my documents.

The same is true of the the sub text articles that offer more in depth information. For example, I received the article on the new Adobe Reader but couldn't open up the "read more" link. At first, I thought it was my ISP but then I realized that I had no problem connecting to any other links on the Net, just the CNET links. Then I started asking around and other people said they were experiencing the same thing with CNET links. Is this a problem CNET is already aware of. Most of the time my computer Times Out trying to open the CNET links. For some of us at least, this has developed into a real problem.

Jun 2, 2006I have Bit defender pro 9. Now whenever i download a key logger or any other type of p2p or malicious program i can't open it, but i can't delete it either. This is the meessage i get. I tried FXP delte and GSO but they said the device attached to this system file is not functioning correctly. So how can i delete it. May 26, 2008I am encountering this error when copying a large number of files from one external hard drive to another. I have Windows XP. A number of files will copy prior to the error occurring. The error occurs when the copying process reaches a file that my Trend Micro security software had identified as a virus and had quarantined.
Instead of simply skipping the file that cannot be copied and moving to the next, Windows Explorer displays the error "Error copying file: cannot read from source or disk" and aborts the copying process, leaving the copying process only partially complete. Copying each folder or file individually to avoid encountering the error would be very time consuming.

Dec 9, 2007One of my co-workers has been having this odd problem and I'm not sure what to make of it. On occasion, she goes to open an INDD (Adobe InDesign) file which is stored on our Windows 2003 server, and it opens as "read-only." She opens the file to make changes and can't because InDesign won't let her save any changes to the file.There's no apparent reason for this - she has full access to the file, the file's read-only bit has not been set, and there's plenty of space on the server.What she usually does to get around it is to "Save As." over the file she's just opened. That normally works. On occasion this doesn't work and she has to "Save As." to her desktop, then "Save As." back over the original. It's a pain for her at the very least.
What's odd is that I've checked the "open files" list on that Windows 2003 server when she gets the error. Her workstation suddenly opens a whole handful of zip files located on the same Windows 2003 server (some of our digital artwork comes in zip packages). They are opened in read mode only (READ, not READ-WRITE).When she does her "save as." and gets past the error, the read locks/handles on the zip files are closed also. The ZIP thing sounded suspicious to me and I scanned her computer (as well as the ZIPs) for viruses. Nothing came up. I have since even re-installed the entire operating system (Windows XP Professional, SP2) and still the same behavior.Now what's funny is it's only InDesign (CS). All of her other apps (even other Adobe apps) seem to behave correctly.
I've even inspected her network wiring and replaced her aged CAT5 with brand-new CAT5e, which needed to be done anyway. (we run gigabit). Net connections are solid (she's only 20-30 feet away from my office where all the office switches are located, which makes things easier). No one else in the office has the problem, and her computer (and software installed) is comparable to everyone else's, at least in her department.
Our software is too old to get support from Adobe (upgrading to CS3 isn't financially feasible at the moment but not sure an upgrade would help if I don't know what the problem is), and I've tried the official Adobe forums with no luck. I didn't get very far - most of the people on that forum aren't PC/NET tech experts, just Adobe users (for the most part). It seems that way, anyway.I guess I'm running out of ideas. What should I do to figure out what's going on here?
