I am trying to write a batch file that would make a specific program a default over Windows Picture and Fax viewer.Reading on other forums, I've input the following into Notepad:ftype jpegfile="C:Program FilesNeroNero 7Nero PhotoSnapPhotoSnap.exe" "%1" When I right-click on any .jpg file after that, under properties, I see that Nero PhotoSnap is now the default program, but when I open the file it opens in Windows Picture and Fax viewer still. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to add registry changes to complete this process?

I need some kind of program/batch file that will place the current IP address I have dynamic so it changes every two hours in a text file that I have specified. The text file would have to be in this way: I am using graburl to update my host of my location, so I thou ht that I could use graburl to do something like this. If it is not possible to include date and time in the text file it is not completely required. However the latest IP address would have to be at the top of the list not at the bottom This must also happen even if date and time columns are in the list.

I had Windows XP Pro SP2 installed, and then i did the huuuge mistake to install Vista Ultimate. Got annoyed and reinstalled XP Pro SP3.I backed up my files before goin back to XP on an external HD. And when I copied back the files to the pc I saw, to my horror, that everything looked ok. But when I try to open text documents, it's just garbled text. Looks like this.Every single document looks like that, rtf files, txt files, word documents and so on. And I've tried to open them and converting to different codings in word and so on (UTF, ANSII and what not). Nothing works. And then I saw, when I was gonna import my bookmarks in Firefox that I saved before I went back to XP from Vista, that those html files also are full of garbled text
I looked around on google, and can't find anything about it I would greatly appreciate some help. Every single text document, which is quite a few, is messed up. And some of them, I didnt even open in Vista.. So don't know if it's because of Vista or if its something else.

I'm trying to write a batch file that will copy files from a folder on the desktop to various files on the C drive. From what I understand it should be like this: copy c:documents and settings\%userprofile%desktopinstallfilename.txt c:windowsfilename.txt
with %userprofile% in place of the actual user profile name because it will be different each time I run this batch file. This, however, is not working.

I'm running Win XP Pro SP 3, I have a file that I periodically copy to several different computers on a LAN. The exact destinations of the file change occasionally and I want to minimize the amount of maintenance involved when there is a change.
In the folder containing the file I have a shortcut to each of the destination drives. When one of the destination folders changes I update the shortcut in that folder.
If I drag the file to each of the shortcuts using the right mouse button one of the options is to copy the file to the target of the shortcut, so one way to copy the file is to manually drag it to each shortcut. Is it possible to achieve similar functionality with a batch file? It is easy enough to write a batch file that copies the files to each destination by coding the destinations into the batch file but is it possible to use a batch file to copy the file to the target of each shortcut? I suspect that parsing the .lnk files is complex but I don't know if there is another way to do this.

I have a batch file which copies key folders and files between hard disks - It would seem that although it will accept only truncated folder and file names (e.g. progra~1) for the source, sub folder and file names are written to the target drive full length. Am I right in thinking that source names have to be written in the truncated form (after all it is, basically a DOS command)? if not how can this be done?

One of my co-workers has been having this odd problem and I'm not sure what to make of it. On occasion, she goes to open an INDD (Adobe InDesign) file which is stored on our Windows 2003 server, and it opens as "read-only." She opens the file to make changes and can't because InDesign won't let her save any changes to the file. There's no apparent reason for this - she has full access to the file, the file's read-only bit has not been set, and there's plenty of space on the server. What she usually does to get around it is to "Save As." over the file she's just opened. That normally works. On occasion this doesn't work and she has to "Save As." to her desktop, then "Save As." back over the original. It's a pain for her at the very least.
What's odd is that I've checked the "open files" list on that Windows 2003 server when she gets the error. Her workstation suddenly opens a whole handful of zip files located on the same Windows 2003 server (some of our digital artwork comes in zip packages). They are opened in read mode only (READ, not READ-WRITE).When she does her "save as." and gets past the error, the read locks/handles on the zip files are closed also. The ZIP thing sounded suspicious to me and I scanned her computer (as well as the ZIPs) for viruses. Nothing came up. I have since even re-installed the entire operating system (Windows XP Professional, SP2) and still the same behavior. Now what's funny is it's only InDesign (CS). All of her other apps (even other Adobe apps) seem to behave correctly.
I've even inspected her network wiring and replaced her aged CAT5 with brand-new CAT5e, which needed to be done anyway. (we run gigabit). Net connections are solid (she's only 20-30 feet away from my office where all the office switches are located, which makes things easier). No one else in the office has the problem, and her computer (and software installed) is comparable to everyone else's, at least in her department.
Our software is too old to get support from Adobe (upgrading to CS3 isn't financially feasible at the moment but not sure an upgrade would help if I don't know what the problem is), and I've tried the official Adobe forums with no luck. I didn't get very far - most of the people on that forum aren't PC/NET tech experts, just Adobe users (for the most part). It seems that way, anyway.I guess I'm running out of ideas. What should I do to figure out what's going on here?

Every time I try to install SP2 either from microsoft's web site or from a copy of the actual file, i get an error message that reads "cannot read or write to the database" and the install stops. It will go through everything except installing the program (i.e. check my key, check the system, backup files etc). What would cause this and how might I fix it? I'm running XP Pro.

I am an old school PC user, since the days of old DOS. Back in the day, I used to make batch files and put calls into the autoexec.bat file to run them. Being the computer guru I am, I tried to show that to a friend of mine, but it didn't work! After a bunch of headache and heart break I realized the autoexec.bat file doesn't get called in WinXP. But there's an autoexec.nt file in the system32 folder! However that only gets run when you open CMD. I found a solution about installing a service called AutoExNT, which worked, but too late. The batch file I am trying to run needs to be run BEFORE I even get a logon prompt. It needs to be run either during or before the Windows XP logo load screen shows up. I tried the Win.ini file, I tried making a

I have several Administrator users. For each one I have set the username folder in Documents and Settings to allow network sharing including 'allow network users to change my files'. For all but one of the users this works fine and I can access and write files from another PC on the network. However in one case I can only read files and get the following message if I try to write: 'Cannot copy [filename]: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.' The settings appear to be the same for all users so I do not understand why I cannot write in this case. I've tried removing sharing then reapplying it, restarting PC, etc.

after reading ms + others I have a couple questions the insert disk can only be a floppy? that can't be right todays pc's only have cd or dvd or possible usb any way to write the backup .bkf file to a dvd instead of some hd other than the c drive? the writeup talks about formatting the entire c drive before the new windows install, is it not possible to just just reinstall windows, in the old windows folder, leaving the drive intact, so you still have documents and settings, program files, etc, so that when the asr restores the os image, all the old programs etc are still there ready to run?
