Cannot Get Passed Startup Screen - Repair
Aug 18, 2010
I have my friends laptop which after sorting malware problems and it working fine for 2 weeks it then would not allow him to get passed the Win XP Home Edition startup screen (where the scroll bar goes across the screen). I understand after reading some of the previous threads that loading up the boot disk and doing a repair may help; I want to give this a go but I do not have my friends boot up disk and he has gone on holiday however I do have an old Evaluation version of Win XP and Win XP Pro SP2, does anyone know if I can do the repair with one of these disks?

Current situation: 2 minutes remaining in a repair installation of WinXP Home, I get an error with a large X and the words "has not passed Windows Logo testing." Below that, it says "This software will not be installed...." If I click OK or turn off at this point, the pc reboots and restarts the setup program at 39 minutes remaining. If the CD is not in place, I get a blue screen asking for the CD.

We have a hp with xp on it. It will not let me go passed this blue screen, it says that we have installed some new software or hardware that needs to be removed and we didn't. But it won't even let us look at the programs, it won't let us go to safe mode or anything.

I have been having a hellish time with our computer. When I start it it gives me the option of opening in safemode etc but regardless of my choice a blue screen comes on. It says. A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If thi is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer. Technical information: *** STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x867670F0, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000)
I can't do anything else. I hit the F8 key when it was starting up but I didn't know what to do after that.

My was on the computer last week sometime and got a pop-up saying that there was a backdoor virus and that the computer needed to be scanned. He hit OK thinking that he was doing something good. Since the scan ran, we have not been able to log in to the computer at all except in safe mode. I have tried uninstalling McAfee and then reinstalling but that didn't work. McAfee keeps telling me that I am not protected but when I try to fix it then it says that there were errors that can't be fixed. I don't think I have the boot disk and really need to get this computer working.

I have recently installed a fresh copy of windows XP on my vaio VGN-SZ770N, everything was goin smooth untill i installed SP3, after installing SP3 and tried to restart my laptop, the laptop was on "Windows is shutting down" blue screen for like 30 mins, so i turned it off manually and turned it on again, now it stops on the black screen with windows XP logo and the loading animation and never get passed that, i can use it in safe mode only, the reason of me installing a win xp is that i had exactly the same problem when Vista was installed on the laptop, it wouldnt get passed the black loadin screen as well, im wondering if this is a hardware failure? Also before installing SP3 i had the Form1 window that pops whenever you start your computer

I rebooted computer and got an error about a missing or corrupt file so windows would not even start to load.I got the bright idea that I could do a repair install of Windows. After the repair install copied the files necessary, it restarted the computer and I got the same "file missing or corrupt" error. So I found the file that was corrupt online and copied it to the HDD.Now my problem is that the Windows repair install is giving me an error after it loads the install and comes up with the install screen.

I started getting BSOD when powering on. So I put in my XP disk and used Startup / Repair. It completed more or less successfully. However, when I boot up I get the Windows XP Home loading screen, the 3 green dots pass by 3-5 times, then freeze. I can get in via Safe Mode, and my apps seem to run OK.

When I start up my laptop, the screen immediatly says Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: windowssystem32configsystem.You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair. The deal is I dont have the cd. IF someone could tell me how to get an xp cd (without buying) that'd be great. I've looked in alot of websites about how to solve this problem but I can't find any solution to the problem without the cd. I can't bypass it by doing any of the F8 options. If it helps, I can access the Calpera DR DOS program.

I have Windows XP Pro SP2 installed and I messed it up.I tried doing loads of stuff and I had to repair the master boot record and boot.ini file. Then when I booted on xp, the blue screen appared.I checked my hardware and did loads of tests but didn't find much problems and I if I did, I didn't understand them. For example I had test problems with my parallel ports and serial ports and the System Stress Test failed in RAM Memory.Anyway, I desided to use the repair installation on my CD Windows XP Pro SP1. But each time it arrived at "installing hardware", it failed and just stoped. tried a few times but it kept stoping. And now the repair doesn't even start... all I see is the mouse.

I have an XP Pro computer with SP1a. The computer started resetting itself after a blue STOP screen that flashed on for a fraction of a second shortly after the XP Professional startup screen. Since I couldn't persuade it to go into safe mode (or any mode), I tried a repair from installation CD. After about 20 minutes in the Installing Drivers section of the install it gives a STOP error saying that the CDR4_XP.SYS driver may be corrupt, and the error Page Fault in Nonpaged Area. It then does a memory dump and restarts with a Chkdsk and resumes installing drivers again. After a further 20 minutes the whole saga repeats itself. I have gone into the recovery console and get a warning message System Registry does not appear to have an active ControlSet key. I can then put in the Admin password and get into the console.

pop up saying that avg needed to update, it gave me the option to postpone it so i did; it told me it would be done when the computer was shut down.
today monday, i turned the computer on and all i had was a blue screen...the only way to access the computer was through the debugger mode, after several things I decided to repair my windows xp... and foolishly did not make backups of my data. During the XP repair the intallation was not completed when a new blue screened popped up saying a different message.BAD POOL CALLER and STOP: 0x000000c2 (0x00000007, 0x00000cd4,0x00340045,0xe1d4de7c)

Recently I took unusual step of visiting Windows update. This was just to double check that the system I was working on was absolutely up to date.Automatic update was set to Auto. Windows update website informed me that a critical update was required. it turned out to be the Windows Bogus (Genuine) Advantage Authentication... I had no choice but to Activate the system before I was allowed to continue checking for updates. Bloody cheek! passing off this 'Genuine advantage authentication' as a critical update. One day I am bound to come across a system that does not pass this authentication. Will the system be usable or will they lock the system until I have made a groveling phone call or worse have to inform my customer/neighbour/friend of a friend that "Sorry I know you just wanted me to check your system was up to date but now you must pay £200 for an Operating system"

You can attempt to repair this file by putting the winxp cd in etc...
Now when i turn on my computer there is just a black screen showing, with nothing at all on it.
Any ideas?

I have just installed some anti virus software and during installation I got messages saying my registry had been damaged and i should log onto such-and-such site to download repair software and run it on my system. I am suspicious that if I do this I am exposing myself to total destruction. One of the messages has just popped up again and the site it directs me to is FixReg32.com.

Problems started was when i updated my Zone Alarm firewall, windows works absolutely fine no problems what so ever, then next time i reboot it does the same, this time problems are non-stop until about 10% then fine from there on in, then when it finishes repairing the drive it gets stuck at repairing unreadable security descriptions date stream.
It also said whilst recovering orphaned files insufficient disk space to recover lost files. It stopped for a while then carried on. After scan disk it restarted and wouldn't load windows, just got stuck on windows loading screen forever, eventually 15+ minutes i pressed reset as there was no disk activity.

I have a Dell Latitude D400 laptop. After reloading windows I get the Windows startup screen and then I just get a black screen...Windows will not come up. Anyone know what I can do?? I get the mouse and can move it around but no windows screen. I have done the diagnoics test and found a DST Short Test failed with code 1000-0146 is this why Windows will not load? Is my harddrive bad you think? It reloads Windows fine but Windows will not come up after install? Again all I get is a black screen with the mouse to move around.

I have had windows XP Pro installed, updated and running fine until about a week ago. I was away from home for about a week and left the machine plugged into the mains but powered down. When I returned home to boot up, it kept doing things like constantly hanging on parts of the bios POST screen, eventually booting up after thirty or so complete restarts. It finally booted into windows but after the last shutting down, it will now not boot up at all. I have replaced the bios battery and reset the bios several times.
