View 6 Replies View RelatedI know there are loads of threads on system restore - I've checked as many as I could and can't find the same problem, but I apologize if the answer's out there and I've missed it. I have had loads of trouble with my SR - basically it won't restore to any of my restore points and says the restoration is incomplete. I tried turning it off, rebooting and then starting it again, and after setting a few RPs and carrying out a few "normal" restorations, it all went to pieces again and wouldn't go back to any of the points - even the ones that had worked before. I've read on these forums that Norton anti-virus can affect SR... I have AVG 7 as my anti-virus, but I do have Norton as my firewall (I know everyone hates Norton, but it came with my new browser when I changed ISP and I just thought it would be too complicated to change it!)A long while ago I had the same problem, and eventually I had to re-install XP because of the mess I'd got it into, so I hope that doesn't have to happen again, but I really have no idea where to go from here, so any advice would really be appreciated. I did recently cause myself a load of trouble by running my Registry Mechanic halfway through the installation of IE7 (that gives you an idea of the sort of idiot I am!) but this was happening before that, so I don't think it's connected.At the moment the computer seems to be running ok - but obviously with no SR when I do eventually mess it up (again!) I'm going to be stuck.

I have 8.5 gig disk space and turning off RESTORE , rebooting and creating a new restore point did not solve the problem--the message remained the same. Other than reinstalling XP I am at a loss as to what to do. I do not have a need to restore at the moment but I may need to in the future.

When I go into the program, it has many different restoration points that were automatically set by the program (Check Points). It also reflects the restoration points that I have set manually. Now heres my problem: No matter which of the restoration points I choose, the computer the computer will go through all the steps necessary to restore, including the restart. After the restart and after the whole Desktop has been replaced, a window comes up and it says this: Restoration incomplete, Your computer cannot be restored to: (date&time). No changes have been made to your computer. Choose another restoration point. But, no mater which one I choose, the same thing happens again. I have dedicated the maximum disk space for System Restoration, (12%)and have checked all the settingsb but still can't find the problem

Recently after waking up from every hibernation, the laptop gives the following error message:System restart has been paused:Continue with system restart.Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu.After that it boots into Windows, however i lose all of my open programs which is rather annoying. Installed Norton Internet Security 2005 and now, whenever I try and do a system restore it says "System restore encountered a problem and has to close". It does this all the time, even in safe mode. Symantec has mentioned that I should turn off NIS2005 and try system restore. If it then works it is a Microsoft issue. I have been onto the Microsoft websites and they do not mention how to repair or reinstall system restore

View 1 Replies View RelatedI run an XP on my laptop. I was downloading a large game file (900mb) and my internet got cut off during the download and it stopped midway.My computer is VERY short of HDD space, so it was crucial I delete the space wasted in my partial download, but I can't find it.
- I tried deleting my temporary internet files & dowloaded program files through Disk Cleanup
- I also tried running a Search for the file name.
Nothing seems to work. If someone can help me find and delete the impartial download so I can get my 800mb's back.
I am using XP Home edition running on an unmodified Dell Dimension (about 1 year old) I mistakenly set my Documents and Settings Folder (DS) to Private and I can not figure out how to undo this.I used the User control panel to create a password for my account. A dialog appeared asking if I would like to make my documents private. I mistakenly answered yes. This has destroyed my home network, I can not see my files from another computer. If I right click on my DS folder and select the Sharing option it shows "Make this folder private" checkbox as checked. However it is greyed out, I can not uncheck it. I also can't uncheck the "Share this folder" checkbox, or change the Share name. I can check, and uncheck the "Allow network users to change my files" box, but checking this box does not restore my ability to access my files.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI was messing around with CCleaner and deleted something to do with an old version of McAfee (which isn't even on my computer anymore) from the registry. Yes, it was stupid to mess with the registry I guess because I failed to make the backup and now my computer won't boot. I get the blue screen that says there was an error 0x0000008e, or something like that.
I have tried using F8 and choosing the last known good configuration but it doesn't work. Also, I can boot into safe mode and I tried running a system restore but after it finished and I rebooted, it said that I couldn't restore from that point.I haven't really tried another restore because I am a little afraid to do anything. I don't want to risk losing access in safe mode because I need to be able to back up some of my files if in case I have to do a reformat.
My computer had a turn yesterday and kept giving me the blue screen error on start-up, so using my windows disk I managed to run chkdsk. However, when I got to my profile a message window came up that said unable to restore to (chosen date/time) etc. I chose 3 other restore points over the last month, thinking it might be some recent problem, still a no go. Whenever I try to download my basic stuff, like, Winamp, AIM, Firefox, anything that is a program. Ive been able to download MP3s but other then that I just get a essage along the lines of it being a corrupt download or incomplete download when i try to run it. I bought an external HD, completely backed up everything important and was about to run a system restore as I had created a manual restore point following the resolution of previous problems. The link to the thread is found below. However, when I use the system restore wizard, I can only select November 8th, 9th, and 10th and today is the 10th. I created the manual restore point back in March 2006. I cannot change the month and I have no idea where to find manual points.
