Restore Incomplete is the message regardless of what date is entered. I have 8.5 gig disk space and turning off RESTORE , rebooting and creating a new restore point did not solve the problem--the message remained the same. Other than reinstalling XP I am at a loss as to what to do. I do not have a need to restore at the moment but I may need to in the future.
View 8 RepliesI know there are loads of threads on system restore - I've checked as many as I could and can't find the same problem, but I apologize if the answer's out there and I've missed it. I have had loads of trouble with my SR - basically it won't restore to any of my restore points and says the restoration is incomplete. I tried turning it off, rebooting and then starting it again, and after setting a few RPs and carrying out a few "normal" restorations, it all went to pieces again and wouldn't go back to any of the points - even the ones that had worked before. I've read on these forums that Norton anti-virus can affect SR... I have AVG 7 as my anti-virus, but I do have Norton as my firewall (I know everyone hates Norton, but it came with my new browser when I changed ISP and I just thought it would be too complicated to change it!)A long while ago I had the same problem, and eventually I had to re-install XP because of the mess I'd got it into, so I hope that doesn't have to happen again, but I really have no idea where to go from here, so any advice would really be appreciated. I did recently cause myself a load of trouble by running my Registry Mechanic halfway through the installation of IE7 (that gives you an idea of the sort of idiot I am!) but this was happening before that, so I don't think it's connected.At the moment the computer seems to be running ok - but obviously with no SR when I do eventually mess it up (again!) I'm going to be stuck.
View 8 Replies View Relatedi cannot seem to do a system restore any which way i try. not even in "safe mode." i cannot find any kind of information about this anywhere, not even microsoft.i was having this problem before and my system was so messed up i started over and installed a brand new hard drive reinstalled windows xp, driver and anti-virius software. i used my pc for a few hours and now the same stuff is happening again.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI downloaded a rar file (15 mb) and once I unpacked it on my desktop (it would show 0 mb when I tried the properties tab) it would not allow the contents of the folder to be seen nor to be delete it. The message I got was unable to delete the file and it is used by another program. I tried the following to delete the file to no avail however: 1. DOS commands 2. The Unlocker software 3. Tried to see what new files were created on that day (could not find anything suspicious) so I can delete them 4. Looked at the startup programs (could not find it there) 5. The restore at any earlier date feature of windows XP 7. Looked in the registry (could not find anything) 8. Tried to see what processes were running so I can terminated it but could not locate anything 9. Tried the Ultimate Troubleshooter software to locate any suspicious running processes 10. PC tools Spyware doctor with Antivirus and Threadfire, Eset antivirus (it could not scan the folder because it appears to be locked), Avir antivirus, Panta microscan and XoftspySE and I got no malware detection what-so-ever.

Now my computer takes at least 10 minutes, maybe longer to boot up to the point where I can actually use it. I have winxp home. I have tried disk cleanup, running norton, running spybot and adaware programs. I decided to get a printer that I had had before, Brother DCP-110C as I knew this had worked well. I tried to install yesterday (28th July) but could'nt and my PC keeps switching itself off near the end of the installation. View 6 Replies View RelatedI was messing around with CCleaner and deleted something to do with an old version of McAfee (which isn't even on my computer anymore) from the registry. Yes, it was stupid to mess with the registry I guess because I failed to make the backup and now my computer won't boot. I get the blue screen that says there was an error 0x0000008e, or something like that.
I have tried using F8 and choosing the last known good configuration but it doesn't work. Also, I can boot into safe mode and I tried running a system restore but after it finished and I rebooted, it said that I couldn't restore from that point.I haven't really tried another restore because I am a little afraid to do anything. I don't want to risk losing access in safe mode because I need to be able to back up some of my files if in case I have to do a reformat.
My computer had a turn yesterday and kept giving me the blue screen error on start-up, so using my windows disk I managed to run chkdsk. So I can get on now, but certain things won't run, like Media Centre, Firefox has forgotten my settings and also my iriver doesn't get acknowledged when I plug it into a USB port.So I am trying to run System restore to go back a couple of days.I can get into restore, and go through everything up to the point where you click 'next' in order to restore it.I click on next but nothing happens, it just stays there.

However, when I got to my profile a message window came up that said unable to restore to (chosen date/time) etc. I chose 3 other restore points over the last month, thinking it might be some recent problem, still a no go. I bought an external HD, completely backed up everything important and was about to run a system restore as I had created a manual restore point following the resolution of previous problems. The link to the thread is found below. However, when I use the system restore wizard, I can only select November 8th, 9th, and 10th and today is the 10th. I created the manual restore point back in March 2006. I cannot change the month and I have no idea where to find manual points.
