Computer Lagging Bad On Startup / Cannot Restore Back To That Date
Sep 14, 2006
My computer was working like clockwork until I installed and then uninstalled a program( google earth). Now my computer takes at least 10 minutes, maybe longer to boot up to the point where I can actually use it. I have winxp home. I have tried disk cleanup, running norton, running spybot and adaware programs. I even tried to do a system restore but it keeps telling me no matter which date I choose that it cannot restore back to that date.
I can not restore my computer back to a later date. I am running windows xp sp2. I went to the restore point and it does not have a check mark in the box.
How far back does system restore? How do you control how far back to keep restor points? I have been trying to fix a problem since February and want to go back to before then and my restore only goes back to April..I have not knowingly deleted any restore functions.
My computer will not let me restore to a previous date. I downloaded IE-7 and I don't like it, but I read on this site that I can go back to IE-6 by uninstalling IE-7. Why can't I do a restore to say last week? It looks like it is restoring, but then stops.
Restore Incomplete is the message regardless of what date is entered. I have 8.5 gig disk space and turning off RESTORE , rebooting and creating a new restore point did not solve the problem--the message remained the same. Other than reinstalling XP I am at a loss as to what to do. I do not have a need to restore at the moment but I may need to in the future.
I was wondering how far back I can restore my pc? I tried to go back like a month and can't do it. It seems that I can only restore to a point where I installed a new program. What I want to do is restore it back to where it was when I bought it back in April.
For the last 2 weeks my computer started making me log in. It says that i need to enter a password but I actually don't have to, and instead of having my user side and one for my editing where you have a picture up and you can switch between the two it will only let me go to the side that i use for internet and such. If I ask it to switch to other user it takes me to the login and back to the main users side. what is causing this and how do I correct it. I tried doing a restore and it says I can't restore back to that point. I tried 3 other points and it wouldn't reset to any of them
Every time I try to restore my laptop to an earlier date,it tells me I cant. All the dates I have tried are highlighted,so I think I should be able to.Running windows xp.
I have a restore point about 3 months ago which I want to keep, but the calender will soon automatically remove it.Is there a way of copying the "old" restore point to a newer date ?
I used the restore cd my pc came with. Once it was done, Windows started up and it froze where it asks me to name the computer cant do anything from this screen. Ive tried contacting the manufacturer but they cant help because my warranty is up. Any suggestions would be greatful. Thanks
I downloaded a rar file (15 mb) and once I unpacked it on my desktop (it would show 0 mb when I tried the properties tab) it would not allow the contents of the folder to be seen nor to be delete it. The message I got was unable to delete the file and it is used by another program. I tried the following to delete the file to no avail however: 1. DOS commands 2. The Unlocker software 3. Tried to see what new files were created on that day (could not find anything suspicious) so I can delete them 4. Looked at the startup programs (could not find it there) 5. The restore at any earlier date feature of windows XP 7. Looked in the registry (could not find anything) 8. Tried to see what processes were running so I can terminated it but could not locate anything 9. Tried the Ultimate Troubleshooter software to locate any suspicious running processes 10. PC tools Spyware doctor with Antivirus and Threadfire, Eset antivirus (it could not scan the folder because it appears to be locked), Avir antivirus, Panta microscan and XoftspySE and I got no malware detection what-so-ever.
I've tried unsuccessfully to restore my windows xp to a prior date, following the tutorial, with the response: "your system was unable to be restored to the prior date."
I run windows XP and, after several years with no audio problems, I suddenly lost audio.I checked my sound settings and everything was fine. I tried to do a 'system restore' but the system restore does not work. It will not allow me to click on a previous date; when I tried "help" in 'SR', that did not work either.I've rebooted several times to no avail. Earlier in the day I had downloaded a new program called 'seekmore'...thinking that may be the problem, I uninstalled it, but the audio is still gone. I ran a Norton Scan... still no success.
When a system restore is required, do the document files, such as word, get restored to the restore point date? I have files that have been amended since the last known good configuration date. Don't want to lose information.
I want a program to run at startup and I want to be able to change what I have done at any time.
There are a number of unchecked entries in msconfig and I have to use Selective Startup all the time.
If I want to revert to Normal Startup under the General tab instead of Selective Startup, the program's box automatically rechecks itself in Startup.
The Startup tab gives me a handy record of what I did and allows for an easy change of mind so long as I continue to use Selective Startup.
If I edit the Registry to stop programs running at startup, they won't show in msconfig and I lose the handy record of how it was and I may have to reinstall the program to go back to it running at startup.
I would like to accomplish this:
1. Use Normal Startup instead of Selective Startup.
2. Have some programs not run at startup, but be able to easily change back to having them run at startup.
3. Have a readily accessible list of those programs and the details as shown under the Startup tab as a reminder of how it was without having to manually enter it all into a text file or keep a notebook or reinstall.
Is there some way to use Normal Startup, stop programs running at startup, but retain or find a list of those programs (including the details under the headings Startup Item, Command, Location) that is shown when using Selective Startup with unchecked boxes under the Startup tab?
To put it another way, use Normal Startup but somehow retain the convenient flexibility of Selective Startup.
S/Restore system when operated comes up with "Cannot restore your system to an earlier date" Have checked for all spyware and viruses (Nil) Have tried disabling the system and also making new restore dates to no avail. Would kindly request any posssible solutions to the above also any other programme I could install to carry out the same or similiar functions to "Systems Restore
Ever since this morning my computer has been lagging on and off. It was working perfectly fine last night when I shut it down. I have tried everything I can think of I ran a system defrag, error check and virus/spyware scanners. It showed that I had no viruses and only a few tracking cookies on my computer.
One again another virus, This time, I am having terrible program hanging and LAG!This really sucks. The other night, while on the internet, came left my computer alone, only, to come back to a 'hacker' using my cursor and accesing my programs, which gave me a hell-of-a-fright.I have updated all my anti-virus programs, and I have scanned and ELIMINATED all the visible buggers, yet I still have BAD lag.
I just recently started having trouble with computer moving slow. When i boot up it seems fine. I have cable connection. When i go into websites like msn it takes forever for me to get into anything. I ran spybot and removed a BUNCH of stuff. But it is still happening. Do I need to stop stuff at start up? If so how do I know what to stop? How can I find out what's running in the background?I know nothing about computers other than mines slow all of a sudden.
I'm not sure what's been happening lately, but my laptop has been running kind of laggy and slow. My specs are as follows:I initially thought that my computer would only slow after I started Trillian, but I tested this (by not starting Trillian), and it seems it will still slow a few minutes after a restart. Restarting my laptop seems to solve this problem temporarily.Keeping it in safe mode (I'm posting in Safe Mode w/ Networking right now) seems to also keep the problem at bay.
Computer is lagging extremely bad, when you click on internet explorer or firefox it takes like 10 minutes to load a page, any program it does that too really, the internet is slow, half the time everything freezes and you have to hold the power button and shut it down, which is bad, control alt delete wont even come up when this happens, there were a few viruses when I scanned it,
My computer is lagging something awful yesterday and today. I've done adaware, spyware blaster and spybot and nothing comes up. I also did a virus scan and came up okay there also.
I have had my Windows XPfor 4 years. Now let me just says its Slow and always crashes and now the toolbar is freezing. How do i solve the problem? So far i have tried:But it’s still slow and crashes all the time. Any one know what the problem is? Also tried a system restore but it still goes slow.
* Ad Ware Check * Spy Ware Check * Virus Check * Cleaning up the Hard drive * Disk Defragmenter
When I click on a link or typing (it did it just then) it doesn't do anything for several seconds, up to a minute. It is slower than it once was. Could there be something running in the background? My system is a P4, 1.7 ghz with 512mb of ddr ram running XP Home with a dsl connection. I don't hink it should be that slow. Could you help me? Do I need to reformat and/or reinstall the OS? If so could you give me instructions on this procedure?
My computer is lagging up to the point where I'm getting ready to format, just wondering if someone could take a peak at my HJT log and let me know of any baddies in there. I run spybot and Adaware all of the time and I use Avg Antivirus.
I just got this computer a week ago and it was working fine until now. when i start up the computer or restart it, everything is normal except for when it gets into windows and my desktop shows up, it hangs there and freezes for about 30 seconds.i thought maybe there was some program in the start up menu that was causing this but i checked and nothing looked out of the ordinary. i took a log in case something might be in there causing this problem.
I am having some problems with my computer and cant really pinpoint the problem.the computer is a Q6600 - but when opening a program, opening a file from a program, there is always a lag, it would freeze for 5 to 10 seconds before anything happens. I suspected adware/virus, but it's not. I tried installing a fresh copy of windows XP onto a new hard drive, but the lag/slow problem is still there, usually it takes no more than 30 minutes to install windows, but it took over 1hr 30 mins to install.I am thinking hard ware issue, I've tried replacing the RAMs, but still the same, now im thinking maybe the powersupply.
