Something funky is going on, I cant find my "c" drive that normally would be listed in My Computer.Any way that I can find it. It doesnt show up in "Windows Explorer" either. From what I can tell, neither is it 'hidden', as administrator of the computer (I have 3 logins on Windows XP), all hidden files are showing when I log in.

However, when I open My Computer on PC1 the Z: drive isn't in the list. Interestingly, if I open a DOS window on PC1 and change directories to the Z: drive, the mapped folder on PC2 is accessible. DIR /P for example displays the directory.Why isn't the Z: drive showing up in My Computer?

XPpro with two HDs, CDr/w and DVDr/w.(D AND (E are (were?) a 20G drive which I partitioned over a year ago. This morning I came across a 4G drive in an old box. (really). Being a curious type I pulled the power and ribbon leads from the DVD and plugged them into the 4G HD, after setting the jumper to slave.Then switched on. A dos line appeared saying 'automatically configuring an F: drive' After which Windows appeared to boot up normally. Except that 'My Computer' showed no (D The 4G (F drive showed as not formated. So... I removed the 4G and replaced the leads back to the DVD. My Computer' shows 3.5 floppy Local Disk(C FRSTHAFOLD(D 9G abt Notice NO (E
Not only that but my D drive is missing lots of files and folders wont open. It seems that the partitioning has been forgotten! I have checked what bios settings there are (not many on Compaq 5000) And the bios sees my main Crive and only one 20G disk I have a bad feeling about this Is there any way to get things back to normal?
Correct me if I'm wrong but I was under the impression that hard drive letters were assigned each time the machine booted up & only c & d were reserved for the operating system & CD/DVD drive & if the number of drives altered from one boot up to the next these letters could change. The reason hat I ask is that I changed an internal drive which had several partitions on it only to find that this drive isn't recognized, but even though it isn't recognized by My Computer or disk management the other partition are labeled as if this were listed.I now don't have a an 'e' & 'g' drive listed. But I do have a 'J' & 'k' listed. Where is my other drive 'e' & 'g' & how do I get to use the data on them.

When I checked my C drive, in the control panel system hardware it's now listed as a SCSI hard drive, and includes a SCSI controller. How do I convert it back to a standard IDE SATA hard drive. WHile browsing the contents of the CD and if I choose back option it says D: or CD drive is not accessible and I have to restart the system to get it back.

On my pc, I had one drive with Windows 98 on it, and one drive with Windows XP on it
Windows 98 was on drive C: XP was on D: They were set up so I could choose which one to boot to at start up I wanted to get rid of the 98 entirely, so I edited the boot ini, just removing the entry for windows 98 after restarting the computer, everything was fine....going directly to XP so I wanted to format the 98 drive so I could use it as additional storage, which I did using norton partition magic, I then shut down my computer......turned it back on.....and I get an error saying: NTLDR is missing.
A friend has a 200G hard drive partitioned into two sections, no OS on it. The drive doesn't show up in disk management but does in System/hardware. Can't get anything off of it, XP won't read it. Does anyone have any ideas please? He's got 12 mb free on one partition and 7 mb free on the other but the drive just doesn't show up in XP. Thanks in advance for any help on this one. I have the same set up so I'm kinda worried and would like to know any ideas just in case for future reference
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy CD-ROM and CDR drives have disappeared like many others randomly one day. They do not show up in my computer, and they will not read any cds either. Only the CD-ROM appears in Device manager and shows no errors. It says the device is working properly. All drivers are up to date. Windows was re-installed and the problem remained. There are no issues with upper or lowerfilter registry values either. Doug Knox's fix did not work and neither did the nocdrom.exe either.
View 4 Replies View Relatedafter looking throught this forum i can see that this is a commomn problem but all the solutions given havent worked on my laptop,suddenly i "lost" my cd/dvd rw drive on my hp laptop, i did the usual and deleted the upper and lower filters in the regedit, and it worked, but now it gone again, ive tried re-installing the factory drives from hp and thats done nothing, sometimes it appears as a dvd-ram drive in my computer but it wont read cds, the drive itself is fully functioning and opens and closes and spins and the light flashes but thats it.ive got a good knowledge of computers and thought it would be an easy fix but this is proving difficult,

I tried to reboot using the recovery console on the windows CD but windows cannot find the Sata hard drive at all So I cant use the CD to reinstall windows over existing windows either I have access to another system, without a floppy drive but not sure what the best method of solving this problem is...Dont want to reformat as I have things on the H/D I need, I know I should have backed up...unfortunately I didnt, wont happen again though, lesson well and truly learned

When I used CCleaner and WinDirStat yesterday, it only scanned and showed 6 GB of total space, not free space. I don't use very many programs, and I'm trying to find out where all of my memory went:To save hard drive space, I've turned off both hibernation and System restore, moved my My Documents folder to my SD card, and kept my installations to about 1.5 GB.

Previously I installed Windows XP Professional, and then after a few months something happened (I don't know what), and my computer would not operate. I charged up the battery completely and when I went to BIOS Utility to do a self test on the Hard Drive, it said no Hard Drive was detected and there was no IDE. I, then, had a friend look at it, and he pulled out the Hard Drive and noticed two prongs were bent. The prongs were then bent back staright and the drive put in. This still did not fix the problem. View 3 Replies View Relatedi had Ubuntu (dual boot with XP), and i got both partions on 15GBs each, now that Ubuntu its gone, i thought that my XP would have back the 30GB it used to have but it doesnt, it still says it has the 15GB the partion used to have, and i deleted Ubuntu by using my XP disk and Repaired the computer doing the fixmbr thingy and i thought it was going to make it the way it was before, also, my floppy drive doesnt seem to work, it lights up, when i log in it seems like its trying to scan a floppy or something, and when i try to open up a floppy disk it freezes the window and doesnt let me work or anything.

I have tried knoppix, for a few times I was copying files to external hard drive but the transfer stalled. I have tried fixmbr, fixboot, and copying the ntldr and ntdetec files from recovery cd. One strange thing is that the file system is now listed as fat16. Is this data recoverable? I have backed up the system on the external but it was about 2 weeks ago. I would like to recover a few emails in the outlook pst file. Is the hard drive fried or did the boot.ini file become terribly corrupt?

View 10 Replies View RelatedInstalled new hard drive, along with XP Home (recovery disk).Before my system crashed all my motherboard drivers were on D: partition.XP loads okay, but it is unstable - for example I cannot start msconfig under "Normal" start up. It crashes. I will not list all the BSOD - but XP doesn't like something.I have no devices connected apart from basic graphics card (which XP loaded the drivers for okay). I am waiting for XP Pro to be delivered, so I am hoping that my unstable XP will become stable after I upgrade (or full installation) of a retail version.

When I highlight the C: drive in "My Computer", it tells me that I have 10GB of free space (therefore I'm using 24GB). When, however, I double click on C: and go into that folder, select all (and yes, I have enabled viewing hidden files/folders), right-click and choose properties, I am then told that C: only contains 15GB of files/folders. Where is this missing 5GB?
View 11 Replies View RelatedI had a problem with my windows. When ever I plug in my Flash drive (i got a few: kingston data traveller 1gig, pendrive 128mb,etc) onto my usb port. Window will be able to detect the drive had been plug in. I can see the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon on the right side of my task bar. But i cannot see the drive appearing in "My Computer". If I double click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon and try to view the external drive information, I can see that its already detected and being assign with drive E: . Even if I open a windows explorer and type in E: , it will throw me an error "Cannot find 'file:///E:/'. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct". But if I were to restart my computer, then i can see it for the first time. If I disconnect it (thru the "Safely Remove Hardware") and plug it back in (or plug another flash drive), I cant see the external drive. Causing I had to restart my computer multiple time a day.
