Have finally reinstalled XP Home and everything is looking good (fingers crossed). The only problem I have is when I boot the pc up and the log on window comes up, I have the message below my name that I have 125 unread messages, I have double checked and I have not got any unread messages at all.
View 3 RepliesMy computer was freezing and I went thru the processes running on my computer and i saw that explorer was taking up a lot of memory, and I assumed that it was internet explorer which i wasn't using, so i ended the process. The desktop blanked out, so i turned off my computer and turned it back on. Here lies the problem, my computer won't start! All my monitor is getting is blackness, and if i turn off the monitor and reopen it says no signal.

View 7 Replies View RelatedComputer blue screens with no specific error msg and everytime i try to do pretty much anything with safe mode regular mode last known good configurations but here is it blue screens off of two different windows xp pro install cds. I ran several of their debugin tests that came up clean although there was an error about the cpu fan speed. The tech support guy said that i need to wipe the hard drive. I have tried booting with only one of the two ram chips and that didn't help at all.
View 10 Replies View RelatedHaving a problem with my friends personal computer. He has a Fujitsu Siemens 'Cordant' Personal Computer which was not booting up at all. I managed to fix this and install the xp home recovery disk that came with the personal computer. Unfortunately he now needs XP Pro which hangs at "press any key to boot from cd" when i put it in his machine. The cd itself is in perfect working order and will boot on other computers. All hardware is fine as XP home installed fine and when i try to press enter to boot from cd, the computer makes a beeping noise so the keyboard is recognized.

View 8 Replies View RelatedMy computer keeps freezing for no reason at all. It starts up normally, and everything loads just fine. I go to open MSN for example, it opens, but I try to do anything inside of that program like open up a new window and it freezes. I press end now and it doesn't close no matter what, even after hours. I minimize it, go to desktop, try to open a folder and explorer freezes. At this point nothing opens up nothing works and I restart.
I have restarted plenty and its the same story every time. I hadn't done anything different than I usually do with my computer. Just one morning I go to my computer and its been doing this non-stop ever since.When I start the computer in safe mode, this problem doesn't occur so its obviously software, but what could be causing this?
I have a lot of folders on my pc so from time to time I go into the folder options and in the folder views sections I click "Reset all folders" The other day I opened up my computer and the panel on the right loaded then disappeared and then the search icon came up (torch and folder thing) and I guess it searches for the hard drives then after a bit of searching it loads them which is really annoying.

Last week I couldn't shut off computer, because spysweeper and other programs were not responding, I had to cancel programs for computer to shut off.I thought it was virus because 1 month ago I allowed communication when prompted from Norton that suspicious malicous activity possible if I continue , I was trying to download my picture onto a website. I ran a scan and it was clean. I called Norton and they said to deactivate spysweeper and it would take care of the boot problem.

So from then on when I want to explore the contents of A (Floppy drive), C (hard drive), D (CD drive) or E (DVD burner) drives I've go to right-click and select Open or Explore from the context menu.

Today when i start my computer, it goes through the normal things the hard drives and stuff except for one thing different, it shows me 5 options on how to boot: start normally, safe and etc. I choose normal thinking that theres no problem with my computer. Once it goes to the window loading screen, after 5 seconds it restarts. Then it goes through the same thing over and over. I don't know what to do to fix this problem.

I installed a new hard drive, the only drive, in my computer and installed XP pro. There was a card reader in the computer which was assigned c drive and the local drive was assigned h on the disk. I disconcected the card reader and changed the local disk to c from h in the registery. Now when I turn on the computer the blue screen introducing XP comes on and goes no farther.

It went though the process, rebooted, and returned to the setup process. In the middle of the setup, while installing devices, the computer froze again. I have tried repeating the process to no avail. I have tried turning off some of the not so necessary things in the BIOS and trying it.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Compaq Presario 900 which doesn't have a working CDrom drive.I took my harddrive out and put it in my friends Dell Inspiron B130 and installed Windows xp SP2. Now that all works fine but(there is always a but ....) when I tried to put the harddrive back into my laptop(Presario 900) Windows will not boot, even if I go to safemode first thing. I thought maybe I could install Windows from the USB port but my BIOS doesn't have a BOOT FROM USB option. Also there is no Bios update that will give me that option.I have tried deleting and installing all the drivers for the Presario then trying to boot like that but it still gets stuck.

I have SBC Yahoo DSL and use the modem and ethernet card they sent me, as well as a Linksys Ethernet Firewall Router. (I only have one computer; the router is just for security.) What's weird is that every time I boot my computer, there is a better-than 50% chance that there will be no Internet connection. When I look in Control Panel under Network Connections, there is no ethernet card listed except one called "1394 Connection".
View 6 Replies View RelatedI had an IP address conflict and that is resolved now that I added a router (Linksys WRT54G). I am trying to reconnect my old hardwired network (which consists of only two computers) using the router (the wireless is for the future system). I can do everything on the main computer -connect to internet, and ping the other computer. I can also ping the main one from the second one once all the firewalls are down.I ran the Windows XP network wizard, saved the "disc", ran it on the other computer. The problem is when I try the secondary computer to contact the first (which has shared files and the internet connection) I get an access denied window. Both have the same Group name. The second computer has all the shared folders listed from the main computer but maybe that is from the original pre-router setup.
No matter how many times I run the wizard I do not see the other (2nd) computer listed on the "my network places" on the main computer. All I see is the the router and an MSN link (if I click on the router it sends me to the router setting on Linksys) How can I fix this and add the second computer? Thanks - hopefully you'll get back to me before I pull all of my hair out!Also, I tried the "add a network place wizard". The drop down menu lists the folder I want to add "\LOUISSharedDocs". When I tried that, or the IP address of the computer it says "folders not valid". I double checked on the second computer the names as above and that is how they are.
An article previously published und Q226476 explains how to change the default where the drive opens and it applies to Windows 98 SE. It says to click START and then FOLDER OPTIONS, then on the FILE TYPES tab, click DRIVE and click EDIT.You can do everything except the last click. There is no EDIT.I would like to have the drive open to explorer rather than open the FIND window.

View 6 Replies View RelatedUnfortunately my PC got a virus which corrupted (amongst others) my wininet.dll file. My virus software quarantined all the infected files, but wininet.dll is needed to run explorer.exe. I have tried to recover a previous copy of wininet.dll but it is corrupt and now every time I try to turn on my PC (even in safe mode with command prompt, it crashes when it tries to load up this file). I have lost my boot disk and have no way of deleting the wininet.dll file (which would at least let windows run). how to I can delete the corrupt file?

When i open any link with "open in new window" the new window is not full size screen window.Of course i dragged it by mouse many times and that should fix it later.It means it should be opened as it had been dragged,but that's never happened though i dragged it about a hundred time as a full screen size.What is the wrong here?
