Updated Win Drivers Puter Doesn't Save Icon Locations

When I update Windows graphics drivers, Windows (Windows 8.1) does not save the desktop icons where I keep them, and I have to put them back where I like them,, snapshot attached.. a long time ago I had to use a separate utility to save icon positions.. I have been using desktop icons for many, many years..
How do I tell windows not to lose the icon positions when I upgrade drivers.. btw, I use Nvidia x64
When I do the graphics driver upgrades, al the desktop icons just go into the right side in a scattered order. and I have to put them back like my snapshot shows how I like them

First and foremost, I do not want to disable OneDrive; I just want to make it behave.
I have an external hard drive that I save all my data to; however, to save to it in Windows 8.1 is a virtual nightmare. As you can see from the clip, OneDrive is the default selection, with Computer and Add a Place supposedly available.
However, when I click on Ad a Place, I get:
What I would like to see as a choice is my external hard drive, but after searching diligently, I can find no way to make my external hard drive the default location.

I have a HP Pavilion dv6t-3000 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC.
I upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8 64 bit. I have an ATI mobility radeon HD 5000 series (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM v1.20) and an intel(R) HD graphics card.
Next to the ATI mobility in device managers, there is an exclamation point in a yellow triangle. when i open it up, it says
This device cannot start. (Code 10) {Operation Failed} The requested operation was unsuccessful.
I have tried updating it but it says it is up to date. i have tried going to the HP support page but it only gives me options for a windows 7 computer and says there is nothing for my computer for windows 8.

i have just started using windows 8.1 on a new laptop and i am logged in as an administrator. i am trying to edit the hosts. txt file in
C:WindowsSystem32driversetchosts.txt
however i keep getting this message:

You don't have permission to save in this location.
Contact the administrator to obtain permission.
Would you like to save in the My Documents folder instead?
how can i alter the permissions level. i mean, i should be logged in as an administrator so why does the system think that i am not the administrtor and where can i go to alter it.

When I save a file to Onedrive on my computer it doesn't sync. I don't use the Windows 8.1 app, instead when I save I select onedrive. I can't figure it out. Or it will save it but it isnt accessible on other devices. What can I do here?

My blue "busy" circle pointer icon no longer spins. It's not really a problem except I suspect that it is a symptom of a deeper problem? I have changed icons, rebooted, changed back, rebooted and still no spinning. I have done sfc and dism / restorehealth, but the circle still wont spin. There is nothing in event viewer that would point to anything related and I haven't changed any settings that would contribute to this.

Likes to use the Windows 8 Start Screen that has all the tiles on it. Normally, she clicks on the "Mail" icon to get to her email, but now when she clicks on the icon it doesn't go to her email and instead it goes straight to her desktop. I tried clicking another icon; the "weather" one, and it too goes to the desktop. She told me she downloaded a couple games from iWin a few days ago and I noticed a new toolbar in her browser so I tried disabling that, but no change. I've checked what the default browser is, Internet Explorer (what she normally uses). I also tried making Chrome the default browser but still no change.

I still get BSOD although I reformatted my pc and installed all up-to-date drivers. So far I only got BSOD while playing League of Legends.
If it's hardware, is there a way to know which hardware is it so I can replace with new one.

My computer had 4GB of RAM and an Intel G2030 processor. It worked fine for my needs, but I'm a compulsive tinkerer. I have upgraded to 12GB of RAM (supposed to be 16, but one module of the 16GB kit I purchased was DOA) and to an Intel i5-3550S processor. These were done in two separate installs, and the computer seems to be running fine, as far as I can tell.
My problem is that the System Information screen doesn't seem to be updated with the new processor. It shows the RAM (11.9GB), but still shows the 2-core G2030 processor. When I go to the BIOS, however, it shows the i5-3550S. Is there something I need to do to get this to update? I'd like to be sure that the computer recognizes the new processor...

Win 8 users. I am having a strange problem where I move files (user files, documents, etc) to subfolders and a little while later they are back in their prior location. I rebooted the computer and it is still doing this.
Sometimes the file will appear in the parent and child directory. If I delete it from the parent directory, it vanishes from the child directory as well. I have to rescue it from the trash. I drag it from the trash to the desired child directory and shortly after that, it is visible in the parent directory and child.
I can't manage files this way. I simply want to organize files but their location changes on its own.

I have a new desktop. A dell Precision T7610 with win 8.1 pro x64. I installed APC Powerchute personal edition last weekend. Went out of town and last night came home and noticed I had no power icon on the task bar. I am not sure if this started right away or not. I do like to change the power plan from balanced to high power depending on what I am doing. I can do through control panel, but I figure I should fix why I do not have the icon on the task bar now.
I tired uninstalling powerchute and it failed. I then re-installed and installed. Now power icon.
In the task bar, customize icons, and then turn systems icons on and off, the power icon is set to off but I cannot set it to on. Under customize icons, if I try to set to show icons, it says it is not active.
unfortunately I do not have a restore point before last night. Not sure if I never had any (new machine) or if some how they got deleted.

The icon of "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" appears even when i not have any devices plugged in.
And if i click it it shows below the "Open Devices and Printers" an item with text "..." which is disabled..

I have a Samsung SE-218 External DVD drive, and I cannot seem to access it in Windows 8.1 (though I have not had a chance to try it on any other computers yet, so there is always the possibility that something is wrong with the drive). Whenever I plug it in the light comes on and it will spin the disc for a bit, but nothing shows up in File Explorer or in Device Manager.

I primarily use an Easycap to convert VHS tapes to digital video files, but unfortunately, I have my device plugged in, and tried installing a few drivers for it, but none of them worked. I've searched across the Internet for an EasyCap driver for Windows 8, but I couldn't even find one, and have come to the conclusion that Easycap doesn't support Windows 8 yet, unless there was something that I didn't know about.

a friend of mine recently brought me a notebook,Medion AKOYA 99380(s6214t). After booting and using notebook for some time,computer reported a Hard Drive error.It said:"Windows detected a hard disk problem. Back up your files immediately to prevent information loss, and then contact computer manufacturer to determine if you need to repair or replace the disk."
The HDD is pretty new and it didn't seem to have any hardware issues. However,I did a clean instal of Windows 8.1 on the notebook(normally I installed Windows on the 64GB SD Card located in the "tablet" part of the notebook,so that way a person using it can use it as a tablet,too). Everything seemed to work fine, no HDD errors from Windows etc.,but then I opened My Computer and second Hard Drive wasn't there.I thought that it's a Drive Letter problem so I went into Disk Management however it did not solve the issue.
Then I tried everything(re-formatting,changing from NTFS to other formats etc.) but it did not seem to work.But all of sudden,after doing something, I don't really remember what I did that made the Computer see it, but it finally worked,so I just started testing everything. And after I used it as a tablet only for a while,I plugged that part in the notebook again and then Windows gave me an option to Update and Restart. I was a bit afraid of how it will turn out,so I wanted to shut down and turn on for a couple of times before updating, just to see if it will cause any issues. When I was sure that it worked perfect before the update, I clicked the option to update.
After the update was finished,Windows ran extremely slow and it detected my second HDD, however not the way it should.It only said "Local Disk (D: ) but I could not access and it didn't show how much memory on it was used. I re-assigned a letter to it after a format,but it did not work. Then I shut down the notebook,pull the second hard drive out,connect it to computer with usb so windows sees it as an external hard drive,and bam,everything worked. I don't think that the HDD is the problem,nor the SATA connectors,it's most likely that the motherboards driver need an update. However,when I checked for it's name,it said "Medion AKOYA s6124t". I tried all the downloads from Medion's page,but no succes in finding a proper driver.

I have an old computer that I've repurposed as a file server for all the other machines on my network, and one of the things I do with it is to put various program installer files on it, so I can install them to the other machines without having to download the same file over and over. However, when accessing these remote files from any machine except those still running XP, I get an extra warning box telling me that the file "is in a location outside your local network." It's not, but for some reason, these machines think it is. I've Googled various fragments of text from these warning boxes (each Windows version has slightly different wording for this warning; the screen shot I've attached is from the Win7 machine I happen to be on right now), but no matter which variant I search for, everything I find about getting rid of this warning is either geared toward similar warnings given by MS Access for remote databases, or for marking external Web sites as trusted.
How do I tell Windows that this local file server is in fact local and not in need of these repetitive and annoying warnings?

I have run into a problem with my Windows 8 computer once in a while, it's that my PC doesn't recognize USB ported devices as supposed to, but it does recognize things such as a wireless mouse and keyboard. Now, my question is, can I buy a wired Xbox 360 controller and connect it to my computer, and trust it to download the drivers correctly, and work like it's supposed to? My Toshiba laptop does not let any of the function keys operate properly. When I press one, nothing happens. I have also tried holding down the FN key, to no avail. I thought this was a Toshiba issue, but after multiple customer support "experiences" who told me that the operating system was corrupted, I think it may be a Windows 8.1 issue. This happened under Windows 8 too. Toshiba has a keyboard driver for this laptop model for Windows 7, but not 8.1. Is this a common problem with Windows 8.1 (All drivers are up to date and function key support is enabled in the BIOS)

I reinstalled my 8.1 pro (legal copy, disk been fully formatted) and it was okay for few hours. Next time im starting the laptop, my keyboard and touchpad doesnt work. I plugged USB mouse and keyboard and it works just fine. I went to device manager and besides Standart PS/2 keyboard and mouse icons there was orange triangle meaning that i have problem with drivers. I searched drivers online, but unsuccsessily.. My PC with Windows 8 Pro doesn't read any kind of discs. I first tried a movie then it reads, a little disc appears on the cursor which means that the disc is being read. But all of a sudden, it fails at the end and doesn't read the disc. Even a bootable disc, it just stays black with a blinking line then it fails to read it as well. No errors or messages, it just proceeds to the Windows 8 loading screen.

I am running Win 8.1 Pro x64. Today I noticed that the "Eject" option from the right-click menu doesn't work for either of my 2 CD-Rom drives, nor for a "virtual" drive - I get the same error message on all 3: "An error occured while ejecting [drive]".
Device Manager shows no errors, and I've tried uninstalling the drives and rebooting, but error persists.
Also, to be clear, it is NOT a physical problem with the drives, as I can open them without a problem through the buttons on the front.
Finally, if for some reason I can't fix this issue, any way to at least just DELETE the "Eject" from the context menu?

I am facing a peculiar issues with my Vaio Machine. I use a Huwaei 3G E173 Modem for connecting Internet. I started using this in my new vaio machine too. Whenever I use the hibernate option, it tend to goto the last phase of Hibernation i.e the screen goes off, the fan starts screaming and after a moment it restarts. So, to be succinct, the new windows 8.1 machine doesn't enter in hibernation mode, if I have connected the modem. The modem has a CD Rom emulation for their proprietary software installation, so I thought it would be the cause and hence I tried to change Boot Options in UEFI BIOS to Primary, Secondary and Third as HDD, Network and External device from HDD, CD, Ext. Device.
I have also tried to disable that Power Management settings available in Driver Settings -> Hardware Settings and Un-tick the "Allow this device to Wake the computer"
P.S If I do not connect the computer to Internet with this modem and try to Hibernate it does the Job, when I use the Huwaei Modem only it creates the issue.
But nothing seems work out. Any resolution for this?
