Due to malware issue (snap.do) i want to refresh or reset my windows 8 (updated to 8.1). but on restart it gives the following error

I dont have any recovery media (disc or recovery drive).
I cant boot to my windows 8. As I open my laptop it says "preparing automatic repair" >> daignosing your pc >>> attempting repairs>>> then it was stuck and cant proceed to desktop.
i tried to open advance setting by pressing "F8" then advance settings option appears. and i tried to a troubleshoot then chose>>

Automatic Repair is unable to repair your PC and you select "Advanced options". After selecting "Troubleshoot", you choose to either "Refresh your PC" or "Reset your PC".
In this scenario, recovery may fail and you are returned back to the main WinRE screen. This issue may occur if the System or Software registry hives have become damaged or corrupted.
To attempt to resolve this issue, follow the steps below. Following these steps should only be used if you are attempting to use the "Refresh your PC" or "Reset your PC" options in Windows RE because your system is in a non-bootable state.
-After Automatic Repair fails to repair your PC, select "Advanced options" and then "Troubleshoot".
-Select "Advanced options" and then select "Command Prompt".
-If prompted, enter in the password for the user name.
-At the Command Prompt, go to the windowssystem32config folder by typing the following command: cd %windir%system32config.
-Rename the System and Software registry hives to System.001 and Software.001 by using the following commands:

ren software software.001
I did all that but when I tried to rename the Software.001 file the system responds: "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process" ...
I tried to create a Ubuntu start up usb key so that i could maybe get in and rename the file but that presented more problems.

How To Reset Or Refresh Windows 8 Without DVD ...
Just recently I was using my computer when an error appeared saying I had a drive error that needed to be fixed. I clicked the error in the system tray and then the computer restarted in order to fix the drive error. Well, I went into an "automatic repair" but then it froze on the "select your keyboard layout" screen. I then tried the "refresh your PC" option, but it wouldn't work saying that the hard drive was locked. I then tried to restore the PC to a restore point but it wouldn't let me do that either. As a last ditch resort I tried to use the "reset your PC" option which I gather is just a guided reformatting of the hard drive but it wouldn't let me do that either, saying that the required partition wasn't there. I took it into a PC repair place and they said the hard drive needs to be wiped, that the registry is corrupted or something along those lines. When booting from the windows 8 CD I tried to go into the installation menu and it won't even accept the product key on my package.
All I can really access is the command prompt. I guess I just need to reformat the hard drive and perform a clean install of windows. How to do this reformatting? I've never done it before and don't want to screw it up. I'm not worried about saving data on the computer, nothing really important on the drive that isn't already backed up on my laptop.
I need to perform a System Refresh against once of my computers. However, when I try to launch the System Refresh option, it claims Windows is missing some files to do so and to insert a Windows installation media or recovery media to claim those files.
Here's the trip-up: I created recovery media on another Windows 8.1 computer and that STILL didn't work (said something about the media not being valid, despite being generated in the same OS). How do I get this to work?
I did do my homework on this issue and apparently having done the Windows 8.1 upgrade through the Windows Store strips out its ability to do a Refresh/Reset unless an ISO is present (of which you don't have one of course because of how you did the upgrade; chicken and egg problem right there). Two of my computers were done as Windows Store upgrades but my Ultrabook was not (for that I did a complicated jig that allowed me to keep all my installed Windows 8.1 Preview software while still moving to the Windows 8.1 final build). However it doesn't seem to matter as even the Ultrabook, despite its unique upgrade path, still fails to start a Refresh (should I want to do one there) so the problem is all over my Windows 8.1 machines.
I have an infected laptop. It has Windows 8 installed.
The problem I'm having is that NO programs will execute, I cannot load "Change PC Settings" so I can't refresh, reset or restore Windows. I have tried the method of holding down SHIFT and restart but to no avail.
I can't load programs from usb/cd before boot but I can in legacy mode and not uefi (not sure what difference that makes).
I have successfully scanned with Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 in legacy mode but it found nothing? I've also manage to scan again using legacy mode with Malwarebytes but nothing.
I also cant load up the Control Panel, it loads but no icons are showing. Command prompt I can load but not in Administrator.
I did a PC Refresh and Reset and it's stuck at 1%

View 1 Replies View RelatedNew Windows 8 Pro with WMC install to a new Intel SSD on an old Dell Inspiron 530. I got everything activated and working fine, and then I swapped the SSD for the old HDD to finish getting all my data. But when I swapped the SSD back in, I can no longer get Windows 8 to boot--it goes into automatic repair, but none of the options are available to me. Refresh won't work, reset won't work, I can't even get system restore to work (it shows me two restore points available, but it won't let me select them.)
This was a clean install, so it has the 350MB recovery partition. I believe the RAID is set properly (I have no straight up AHCI option in BIOS, but I installed Windows 8 under RAID [it shows "AHCI Bios enabled!" during POST], and remembered to change to IDE mode to boot the HDD, and back to RAID before trying to boot the SSD).
I've always been able to troubleshoot these sorts of problems under XP or 7, but I'm just not familiar with these Windows 8 processes (or SSDs/AHCI/RAID stuff) yet. I've got all the linux tools, Hirens, etc. available, and can verify that the files on the SSD appear to be fine. I could reinstall if necessary, but really don't want to have to deal with the upgrade and re-activating--and even if I do have to reinstall.
I installed Windows 8 Through my windows DVD and now want to make it so I don't need the Windows Installation Disk or any USB Recovery key. Is there any way to make a refresh AND reset partition and image.

Your Windows installation or recovery media will provide these files". The laptop came with Windows 8 installed so I do not have the installation discs. My Toshiba Satellite Laptop has Windows 8. For some reason windows 8 wont load. It gets to the screen where you select which username you want. But from there its non responsive, I cant get into Windows, I cant restart to load it up in safe mode.
I got a Windows 8 disk which I had to change the bios to load it up. The cd loads but it says the automatic repair wont repair the laptop. I recently purchased an Asus X551 laptop with Windows 8 but straight the way uninstalled Windows 8 and installed Ubuntu (after creating a Windows 8 recovery drive just in case). I have since decided that I want Windows 8 back as I have found that I cannot use a lot of software on Linux. The laptop did not come with any form of recovery disk or installation disk, the only reminent of Windows 8 I have is the recovery USB that I created from within the OS.
When I plug in the USB and boot from it it brings up the recovery menu with options to reset the PC but when I click it it says something like - "Unable to reset PC. A required partition is missing".
Now, here's the main problem. I don't think Windows 8 is picking up my partition, or is it? The laptop technically crashed in this situation.
Windows 8 is installed on C: Drive.
Before the crash, I was simply installing the latest AMD Catalyst and VISION Engine Control Panels whilst surfing Facebook. I'm not sure if the problem is directly linked to this or not. After the AMD stuff installed, it let me choose whether or not I want to reboot now or later, so I left it open until I could close Facebook, that's where troubles start.
The bar at the top of Chrome went invisible, and everything started flickering so I Alt Tabbed to the prompt for rebooting and hit reboot, and went to get a coffee.
I come back to my laptop expecting a login screen, but instead I'm greeted with a blue screen showing that winload.exe is either missing or damaged or something... so I've been trying everything in a command line from my install disc.
I've tried all the BCD backups, tried fix MBR, all that. One led to a problem where it said "The Boot Configuration Data (BCD I assume) is damaged" or something, but I had a backup so I renamed it back to BCD from BCD.OLD and now I'm back at the same winload.exe screen.
Refresh Your PC didn't work either, I'm getting a drive locked error, and yes I tried clearing attributes...
In Diskpart I've tried List Partition, and it showed my 100GB D: called Data, my System Recovery Partition of 100MB and my C: with 300 or so gigabytes, and it's extended, not primary.
I've tried setting it active, won't work.
I need this laptop for a lot of data and a resume I need to turn in for a job interview tomorrow.

store couldn't work right, task manager needed more than 2 minutes to open, shutting down needed more time than windows 7, i decided to make a refresh (the function of windows, you can use to reset them somehow without losing your files). It goes slow all the time, whenever i click anything. I've downloaded and installed all of the updates.
Notice that i have only the basic programs running and mcafee (i know it's "heavy" programme but i didn't have problem before the refresh)
I am having an issue with the amount of time that it takes for this to complete. I have heard that it can take a bit of time, but my laptop(Acer Aspire V3-771G-9809 Notebook Intel Core i7 3632QM (2.20GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M) has been stuck on 60% for over 24 hours. View 4 Replies View RelatedI did a clean install of Windows 8.1 this week and have a fully updated installation now with minimal programs installed. My problem is this, I have my downloads folder set to sort files by date created, from newest to oldest so I can easily find my newest downloads as they should be at the top of the listing, but Windows explorer will not refresh the view if I have have explorer open, forcing me to either manually refresh it or go to another folder, then come back which updates the view. I never had to do this with the old win 8 pro installation and have tried resetting the folders several times but it still won't update by itself. I do have the latest version of Start8 installed, but that never caused a problem before.

I was getting repeated blue screens of death. My laptop would crash and then restart only to crash again within 2 minutes, this just kept happening. So I figured I would just factory reset my laptop because it should have a recovery image on it since there is no optical drive. The factory reset failed at 64%, so I did it again and it failed in the exact spot again. Now the computer won't boot up. It says automatic repair which ends up failing and it gives me 2 options to either shut down or go through the advanced options. Is there anyway I can download windows 8 onto an external drive and install it like that? I have no clue what to do at this moment.

I purchased PC with Win 7Pro but in the time frame that allowed free upgrade to Win 8 Pro. I upgraded by downloading and installing - however I also purchased the Official upgrade discs 32/64 bit from Microsoft and received them some weeks after upgrade took place. I have since auto upgraded via App Store to 8.1 and I now wish to use Refresh Recovery but no matter which disc I insert Win7/8 it states invalid.
i have had to result in reinstailling windows 8 from scratch since neirther my saved system image worked and the refresh and restore options dont work.
I have had this system image problems happen twice, when i go to restore the image i get an error saying that the image was made on a different OS varient. E.g it was made of a 32bit system and im reimagaing a 64bit os. However this is not the case.
When i brought windows 8 i had the 32bit OS but i have upgraded to the 64bit OS and the reimage was done on a 64bit OS. I only have one PC so it nots likely that it was from a different PC.
Also when i go to the refresh option, i get an error saying that the drive is locked. how it was locked and how to unlocked it.
I've been driven to post by an issue with the Refresh Windows option since the update to 8.1 I cannot find a viable solution.
It appears to me that the Refresh Windows function is broken for those of us who upgraded from 8 to 8.1 for free via the start screen Windows Store.
When I tried to run Refresh on two of my 8.1 machines it failed, responding with the error message "files are missing, insert your recovery drive or installation media" or similar.
However, if you have upgraded via the Store, neither your original Windows 8 installation disk NOR a newly created recovery drive will work. If you try to use either, windows will tell you the media is invalid.
Research and fault finding indicates that the refresh function won't work because of a product key conflict.
From what I can tell this is because:
When you upgrade from 8 to 8.1 through the store you don't create an ISO or receive an updated product key.
If you have upgraded via the store, Refresh will tell you files are missing, as above. If you use your original 8 installation media as windows directs you to, it will fail because the product key is no longer valid.
If you create a new recovery drive on your updated 8.1 machine, again this will not work - Refresh will say the disk is invalid. Again I suspect this is a product key issue.
Trying to find and use a Windows product key on my machines since the upgrade is also a dead end. Control Panel/System and Security/System no longer displays a product key. Using a third party product key finder app may find another product key, however again this will be invalid.
Refresh was such a handy feature of 8!
