Maintenance :: RE Images And Refresh Does Not Work?
Jan 25, 2014
i have had to result in reinstailling windows 8 from scratch since neirther my saved system image worked and the refresh and restore options dont work.
I have had this system image problems happen twice, when i go to restore the image i get an error saying that the image was made on a different OS varient. E.g it was made of a 32bit system and im reimagaing a 64bit os. However this is not the case.
When i brought windows 8 i had the 32bit OS but i have upgraded to the 64bit OS and the reimage was done on a 64bit OS. I only have one PC so it nots likely that it was from a different PC.
Also when i go to the refresh option, i get an error saying that the drive is locked. how it was locked and how to unlocked it.
I accidentally removed a usb cable from a powered usb hub , and a volume slider of some other program appeared superimposed and floating above my music making program , so I restarted the pc. From then on , it wouldn't start , and kept saying preparing automatic repair, then reached 40% and wouldn't go any further.
I unplugged my 2 external drives because they weren't showing in the bios , and plugged them into my laptop to check they were ok , and I am relieved to say they are.
Since i removed the drives , my desktop ( asus ) will eventually arrive at the blue recovery screen , but all these things that are supposed to fix it , aren't working.
When I try to refresh , it says the drive where windows is installed is locked. I've tried to do a system restore from 3 different restore points and none of them have worked ( one actually cited a mozilla profile as being the cause )
Re-image wont work because it cant find the image file , which is on one of my external drives which are now unplugged. Automatic repair diagnoses , but then says it cant repair. It also will not boot into safe mode.
I can use command prompt, and was hoping I could rename the system hive name , but the command prompt says X=windowssystem32.
I've tried cd%windir%system32config , but it says " the drive , the path, or the filname is not valid" . I have successfully ran regedit from the command prompt .....
I had no reasons to expect anything untoward before yesterday. The automatic repair thing happened before , about 4 months ago , but i was always able to get out of it by switching it off at the wall. Now that doesnt work and its in an endless loop .
I have hirens bootcd but there are a lot of things on it that i dont know how to use. I was able to get mini xp working via hirens but couldn't access system restore.
I'm currently running 8.1 and wish to effect a Refresh Recovery but when I enter disc when requested it states 'Not Valid'.
I purchased PC with Win 7Pro but in the time frame that allowed free upgrade to Win 8 Pro. I upgraded by downloading and installing - however I also purchased the Official upgrade discs 32/64 bit from Microsoft and received them some weeks after upgrade took place. I have since auto upgraded via App Store to 8.1 and I now wish to use Refresh Recovery but no matter which disc I insert Win7/8 it states invalid.
A month back I accidentally deleted the wow6432 node from my registry under system_user. I believe this is the root of all my problems. Once I did that, my toshiba c885 D 64 bit would not boot. I forced the computer to shut down and pressed f12 to get to the system recovery options. I then restored to a point before my blunder. Well, my laptop worked for a while and then magically the screen goes black and will not reboot. I did sestem restore a few more times since I could get a little bit of work done in between restoring and the screen turning black again. After I was fed up with having to run system restore every other day, I decided to run system refresh to keep my files but reset everything else. After restoring I am getting the same problem and find myself again running system restore every other day just to keep working.
My questions are if I completely reinstall windows 8 and start from scratch, will this definitely solve the problem? I thought system refresh would have worked, so I'm not sure. Also, are there any other available options for me to fix my computer without starting from scratch?
I installed Windows 8 Through my windows DVD and now want to make it so I don't need the Windows Installation Disk or any USB Recovery key. Is there any way to make a refresh AND reset partition and image.
My WEI score is better in 8 than in seven...How to Update or Refresh the Windows Experience Index (WEI) Score in Windows 8 and 8.1 32 bit developer preview w/2 Gb ram in VMware workstation 8 Windows 7 specs in the usual place.
Using the sfc command, I found some corrupted windows files but it was unable to repair them... Is there any way I can repair the files without having to reset or refresh my computer and lose everything I installed?
I found something called DISM, but when I used it, it said unable to find source files or something... I found my recover partitions, but they don't have drive letters. Anything I can do?
My search feature isn't working. This is the main search that should start with you typing while the metro screen is up. Some time ago it just disappeared. I've tried a couple of things to get it to work, but I can't.
I noticed from some days that in windows 8 pro, the Fast Start-up did no longer works. and windows booting loading and shutdown takes many time, 2 or 3 days before it was fast since I installed windows 8. why is that,? although these option still checked,
Been able to get file versions to work with skydrive? I've read that if your skydrive offline files are pointing inside a library that the file versions will be captured. With 8.1 RTM it appears to me that the offline file versions are by default included in the documents library but I am having no luck getting them captured.
File versions is enabled and I can get other libraries files captured just not those from skydrive.
Running Windows 8.1 and File History was working OK for my computer, actually on two different computers worked just fine. (I never could get File History to work with Windows 8). Then suddenly this feature just up an quit. Got a little "red" flag in the Action Center. Using the control panel an "setting" up File History my system says that file history is turned off. I never did turn it off, it seems it just up an turned itself off.
But here is the thing, I select my external drive to use for file history and the system says the service can not be started because its disabled or no enabled devices are associated. It "sees" the drive but will not enabled this drive. I have used various windows programs, such as system services..to "turn" on file history. But there seems not to be anything that will fix file history.
It seems all the support is non specific to file history not working. I have yet to see a simple fix to "make" Windows 8.1 to again run file history. I would just like to point and click to backup the computer...but windows is now becoming NON-USER friendly to manage these types of things.
I was wondering how Power Plans work. Say, I have my Power Plan set on Balanced. Now it'll adapt to the Balanced settings for plugged and unplugged respectively.
my computer needs more power for a task I'm performing while I'm not plugged in. Will it be able to push itself to it's capabilities, or would it stay restricted? How about when it's plugged in?
If I would rather have "High Performance" settings when I'm plugged in, and "Balanced" when I'm not, is there a way to do that? It's clear that Power Plans work even while being plugged in, but I see no need to limit the PC while you aren't on battery.
I installed my collection of fonts last night and since then the images (or maybe they're a kind of font?) in the menu bar in the start menu have gone missing and have been replaced by rectangles (which leads me to believe its a font problem). These weird rectangles have also replaced the arrows on scrollbars, the search button in the start menu... pretty much any kind of button in the Metro interface. I did not remove, rename, overwrite, or delete any existing fonts to my knowledge. take a look at my attached pic.
Is there any way to fix this or am I going to have to do *another* refresh?
in IE10 In a number of web pages (e.g., accuweather), a number of images are missing. Weather for a particular day used to have a background picture - now, just text. Buttons are missing. For example, when I try to buy something or Continue to next page, the buy/continue button is missing. I've found I can tab within the page until a blank space on the screen is highlighted and then I can hit enter. But VISUALLY, it's not there. Some web pages are almost entirely black and white I'll add, these same buttons/images are missing in Firefox. I've tried clearing cache/cookies in IE and FF.
In every open app, in the upper right, are three icons - minimize/restore/close. These appear in every app but the location (I'll call it that) is inconsistent. That is, in Vista and all previous iterations, I could hold my mouse over the minimize icon and click - never moving my mouse - thus, minimizing all apps. If I place my mouse over 'minimize' and click, I may minimize the next 1-2 apps. For the next app, the mouse may be to the left of minimize or it may be over the 'restore' button even though I've not moved the mouse. I have to hit Minimize, wait to see where the mouse is in the next open app, and move the mouse to hit Minimize again.
This next one may be more difficult because I don't know the lingo. At the top of every oprn app is a title (e.g., Microsoft Excel). I call this the title bar. In all previous iterations of windows, the title bar was always the same size/color. Not in Windows 8. Most title bars are the custom color I've chosen but some are black and some are the same color as the menu bar (off-white?). In some apps the title bar SEEMS to be thicker than others although this could be an illusion due to color. While this isn't as bothersome as the varying location of Minimize, it is an indication my problems are various. since the original startup of this PC they didn't appear after an update on installation of another app.
I got a new Samsung laptop because my other laptop was slow and old. However, there is something strange in this laptop the images on firefox don't appear all the time.
I followed their guide: Cleared cache and cookies, it worked for few hours then images are not loading.
- I deleted my ESET smart security: It didn't do anything. - I installed Panda free antivitus and still the same problem. So it's not from the antivirus program I'm using.
I checked my other laptop and images are showing without any problem, so it can't be from my connection.
What else can I do? I think I exhausted my laptop uninstall and Install a lot of programs and it's still new.
I installed Win 8.1 several months ago, and it's running fine. I was especially impressed with the satellite images, which worked something like Google Earth.
The icon images on the app screen are specific to the website they link to, but when I pin them to the Start menu, many of them become the generic "e" for explorer icons. They do retain the name of the website, which is okay, but if I change the size to "small", I am left with a bunch of similar-looking icons.
On a MSI CR70 running on Windows 8.0, I wanted to change the location for "My Images" from "D:Pictures" to "C:UsersMain User*Pictures". Because the folder didn't already exist, the bar where you could fill in the new location** kept setting it to "C:UsersMain User". So now I have accidentally changed the location from My Images to "Main User". It's very weird this redirecting, as the "Main User"-folder looks disappeared in Win Explorer, but then "Contacts" is in "Main UserContacts" and at the same time in "Main UseImagesContacts". It's frustrating that Windows doens't let me change the location of "Pictures" back to where it came from or back in the normal folder, and I don't like it.
When trialling the Enterprise edition of Windows 8.1 I began to notice that my Windows Update history was often either empty or had just one or two entries in it. Strange ! Now as I was trialling Windows 8.1 at the time I was making extensive use of AOMEI freeware backup program and I began to have a suspicion that this was happening after each restore.
Anyway, I've just proved that this is indeed the problem. The two pictures show my update history and the history after having made a disk image and then restoring from that image. The installed updates list has been cleared apart from one entry.
I have a parallel installation on another PC that uses Acronis disk imaging and here there is no issue. All the updates are shown correctly.
In the MUSIC folder I have 1 folder for each artist. In each Artist folder I have 1 folder for each Album. And in each Album folder I have all the songs, with the cover art embedded in them, in every single .mp3 I have.
In folder options I've set folders to show thumbnails, not icon. So, each Album folder's icon is the album art of the .mp3 files it has inside. BUT in the MUSIC folder, all the Artist folders don't show the album arts they have inside. Their icon is not a folder's icon neither, it's like thumbnails of folders:
And I'd like them to show the thumbnails of the albums they have inside. Well, the maximum amount of images that a folder icon can show is 2, so if I have more than 1 album in an Artist folder, then the icon should be 2 random thumbnails (of 2 albums).
An example here:
I put a song (with embedded cover art) in the desktop. The archive's icon is the cover art.
Now I create a NEW FOLDER (the icon is a default folder icon) called "Album". I put there the .mp3 file. Now, the "Album" folder's icon is the cover art of the .mp3 file.
Then I create ANOTHER new folder called "Artist" (default folder icon), and I put there the "Album" folder. And here, the "Artist" folder's icon is NOT the cover art, but the icon of the image above, and I want it to show the cover art.
Notice that all album's folders have only .mp3 files, not hidden images like "folder.jpg" or anything else, just .mp3 files.
What drives me crazy is that like a week ago, Artist folders were showing cover arts of the albums they had inside (they picked up 2 random images, cause folders can show up to 2 thumbnails).
I'm trying to print images/pictures using windows photo viewer and I get this error "Your pictures can't be printed because this error occurred".... It doesn't tell me which error.. simply just says that in the dialog box. THe dialog box comes out like 4 times with the same message and I have to click OK.
I've already tried googling it and the only fix I can find is replacing photowiz and I already did but it has fixed. I've also installed Photo Gallery and it stil lgives me the same error when I try to print and picture. I've also reinstalled all my printer drivers...
When I access the dialog box headed "Attach Files" and choose the wording "Smaller 640 x 480", I then click on ATTACH at the foot of the box.
When I go back to the gmail page and choose the resized picture to send as an attachment, the size shown is an enormous size. Why not the reduced size?
I understand that Windows automatically resizes the picture to be sent in an attachment. So why does the picture not appear in its reduced size but in its original size on the gmail page? Is this normal? Will the picture be transmitted in its reduced size or in its original size?
I've just bought a new laptop with Windows 8.1 and have been playing around with the settings etc. and have a question regarding the Lock screen.
I have personalised the lock screen with my own picture but have decided that I don't like it and would just prefer to use one of the default pictures, but there doesn't seem to be anyway of deleting the picture I have added.
I've tried searching for the picture on the laptop but have had no success finding it. How delete this picture?
When I am at a web site that contains .JPG images, I can right click on the image to forward it to a third party as an email attachment. I have done this in the past using Vista. However, I receive an error message, saying that I do not have a default email program established, and that I should set one up as a default program.
My Windows 8 laptop came with a Mail email program established. I used Control Panel to verify that this program exists for default email applications. Is there something else that I need to establish in order to enable Mail to act as a default program?
I foolishly upgraded to windows 8 last week having paid £99.00 for the privilege and not seen anything useful come out of it. Whilst I am chasing Microsoft for a refund, I don't expect them to be very obliging, irrespective of any consumer laws we have in this country, so the immediate problem I have is that I have also found in Adobe Lightroom 4 that all the existing images now have a yellow colour cast.
I have tried reinstalling various versions of drivers for the graphic adapter from various sources. All of this has had no effect so I am not sure what else I can do to correct this back to how it was.
