I'm not sure what's exactly the problem but sometimes Windows 8.1 hangs at the Windows logo at boot with Fast Startup enabled on a mSATA SSD with my Lenovo Y570 laptop.
My laptop does not support Secure Boot/GPT or UEFI, so I'm really unsure if that's the problem.
Once I disable Fast Startup the boot process never hangs ever but it makes my bootup time slightly slower.

On Acer 3820TG (Win 8.1) I am trying to force system to use hybrid shutdown/fast startup function. I've already tried all steps from this topic: Fast Startup - Force Use by All Users in Windows 8 but no success - system performs full shutdown. The only solution that works for me is shutting down with command "shutdown.exe /s /hybrid /t 0". Then system shuts down in ~5 sec and starts in ~15 s.
If you shut down a computer from the right-click-left-bottom-corner menu in desktop mode, then click Shutdown -> system performs full shutdown. If you click Shutdown in charms bar -> system performs hybrid shutdown. Now my PC is starting in 8s, laptop in 15s.

I have a desktop with Windows 8 upgraded to 8.1, I can enter the BIOS setup by pressing the DEL key only when the preceding shutdown is a complete shutdown (shutdown with fast startup turned off).
If the desktop is shutdown with fast startup turned on (incomplete shutdown), and Windows cannot be loaded during the subsequent starting. How can I enter the BIOS to select to boot from a USB stick?

I've had problems since yesterday regarding the hybrid (fast startup) shutdown.
The machine just won't do it, instead it does a full shutdown. I have the option thickened under power options but it still doesn't work.
The only software change was running a portable version of 00 Defrag 16. I used a portable version because installing it would cause the problem I described above (maybe something about reg files?). I've used the portable version a few days ago but just to scan the drive, yesterday I started to defragment the drive and then the problem surfaced.
hyberfil.sys
Running the shutdown -s -hybrid -t -f 0 does a full shutdown too.

Windows 8.1 ... Noticed shortly after upgrading the Asus VivoTab Smart to Windows 8.1 (from Windows 8) -- that sometimes the system's date and time will be incorrect after a shut-down, turn on cycle. Sometimes the clock is as fast as three hours, but others much longer. Interestingly, if you go into PC Settings > Time & Settings and then toggle off the "Set time automatically" option, and then toggle it back on, the time and date are immediately corrected. However, the time would again be wrong after a shutdown. If the tablet is restarted, though, the time is correct again.
THE SYSTEM: Windows 8.1 (upgraded from Windows Store). Intel Atom processor.
WHAT'S BEEN TRIED: I:
1. Stopped the Windows Time service, registered it again and restated it. The issue remained. I entered the desktop and clicked on the time in the lower right-hand corner of the screen. From here I confirmed the time zone was correct and changed the date and time. That fixes the problem during the current session, but the time/date are again wrong on reboot.
2. Tried Safe Mode. In Safe Mode, the time is correct and stays correct.
3. Tried Clean Boot. In Clean Boot, with all non-Microsoft services disables, the issue returns and the time is wrong again.
THE BREAKTHROUGH THAT BEGS FOR AN ANSWER: While reading this thread, I read up on Windows 8's Fast Startup. Just on a lark, I went into the Power settings area of the Control Panel and turned off Fast Startup. Now the clock is correct. There's a downside , of course, to this in that shutdown and startup is notably slower.
The tablet now keeps perfect time -- but cannot have Fast Startup - which is a bummer for a tablet.
QUESTIONS:
1. Is this is hardware issue? Asus is offering an RMA -- but hate to add to a landfill when this is fixable with software.
2. Is there a way to check the BIOS clock on a Windows 8.1 tablet ? I believe it's a UEFI system....
3. Is there a way to fix this so fast startup can be used -- and have correct time?
4. Is this a known issue?
5. Is there a way to make sure the Windows Time service is activated in a Fast Startup.

Over the last few days I built a new PC with ASUS A87 Pro MB, no PCIe cards, and Samsung ssd 840 Pro boot drive. Lots of changes on a daily basis. For a while, the FAST STARTUP hybrid boot was working. Then it stopped, and I'm trying to debug it.
When PAST STARTUP is enabled in power options, I get a repeatable Critical Error - Windows did not shut down properly, and the startup time is as long as it would be without FAST STARTUP enabled. There are no BSODS, and no apparent harm from the Critical Shutdown error.

I have Asus Maximus V formula z77 with latest EUFI firmware, and EVGA GTX 680 classified with EUFI firmware. Bios is set to fast boot etc, and it is enabled in windows, but I'm seeing no difference from before. I was using boot racer and seeing 11-14 second windows load times with another 10-15 til desktop. Averaging around 28 second boot speeds, whether from a fast boot shut down or a restart. My OS drive is a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB.
My windows 7 booted faster on an OCZ Vertex 4 128GB.

So on startup it says I have a connection and I have internet access, but whenever I try to load a page it won't load. I have to wait a couple minutes for my internet to work. Also I have the latest drivers for my network card.

When Windows 8.1 was released, I upgraded my current Windows 8 installation. Overall, it has been a great experience. However, I've run into a couple of strange problems that I have never had before.
The first problem is, whenever I boot into Windows 8.1, my USB devices don't work right away (keyboard and wireless mouse). It doesn't matter if I restart my computer or have just turned it on. In order to get the keyboard to respond, I have to unplug and plug back in the cord. It's very annoying to have to do this every time I boot Windows.
The second problem is, while Windows is logging in, I get a UAC prompt. The UAC prompt says "Service Control Manager Configuration Tool". This prompt also happens every single time I log on, which is also very annoying.
I have checked my startup programs and have found nothing obvious that could solve these problems, but maybe I'm missing something.
Have these problems happened before? I really would prefer not to do a clean install since everything else is working perfectly and it's not slow at all.

I can't disable startup applications because I can't find them in the startup list.
Yes I know they are not anymore in msconfig.exe but instead in taskmanager-> startup. But they are not there.
I tried with cccleaner but also I can't see all startup apps.
So where I can find all startup apps list and disable them?

In Task Manager-Startup I have several programs (Adobe stuff) that I want out of there, I know I can just disable them but I want them removed. They used to be in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun or HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun but in Windows 8 they aren't. I can view the file locations but can't figure out what's causing them to startup when Windows starts.

As I start my Surface Pro the normal Start appears. By tapping a Desktop tile I see My PC folder opened instead of desktop wallpaper...This started to happen after I installed recent apps updates. As far as I can remember, no registry tweaks nor system modifications were made by me.

i recently got a new laptop "asus vivobook" that came preloaded with windows 8.
The laptop comes with a hybrid 24 GB ssd (8GB of those are for the system files, windows 8 is installed on,the remaining are in a 2nd partition for recovery) i deleted the recovery partition and made a recovery on an 8 GB usb drive, because im dual booting a different linux os alongside windows.
I used rEFInd boot manager to boot the 2 operating systems, everything boot and works fine.
However, since the dual booting started i noticed that the windows 8 loading time has became a bit slower, when i choose to sart windows 8 the asus logo appears and under it this message
"Scanning and repairing volume (?Volume{...large hex identifier..}): 100% Complete"
it stays for 2,3 seconds and then windows 8 start,i ran a chkdsk for the c drive, but that didnt solve the problem.

I downloaded and installed Windows 8 on October 26th. So far, great experience however... the last couple of days when starting my new Dell Inspiron 5720 it is running a "Scanning and Repairing (C) and is getting stuck at 27% (waited over 2 hours) so I hold down the power button and it restarts as normal. Only seems to start the check on every 2nd or 3rd startup. I have googled and read many articles and have since error checked my C: drive through properties with no errors being reported.
I guess my question is what would cause this to all of a sudden start and why and how do I stop it. It is very frustrating . I have completed virus scans, defrag, error checking, etc.
The Dell laptop is new but came with Windows 7 in early October. It is 8GB RAM with a 1TB drive running Intel 7.

When I put Windows 8 in sleep mode (yes sleep mode...I'm not shutting it off), and I turn it on, it sometimes takes up to 5 minutes to respond to any input. I'm wondering what I can check to make sure the minimal apps/programs are running, and there are no unnecessary memory hogs churning in the background? How can I test it, monitor it, and optimize it?
Any issues with Firefox sucking up tons and tons of RAM? When I look in the Task Manager, and sort by Memory, Firefox is ALWAYS at the top of the list. Is there any way to regulate the max memory settings for Firefox?

i have had to result in reinstailling windows 8 from scratch since neirther my saved system image worked and the refresh and restore options dont work.
I have had this system image problems happen twice, when i go to restore the image i get an error saying that the image was made on a different OS varient. E.g it was made of a 32bit system and im reimagaing a 64bit os. However this is not the case.
When i brought windows 8 i had the 32bit OS but i have upgraded to the 64bit OS and the reimage was done on a 64bit OS. I only have one PC so it nots likely that it was from a different PC.
Also when i go to the refresh option, i get an error saying that the drive is locked. how it was locked and how to unlocked it.

I'm using an Asus N550JV running Windows 8.1.
Recently, whenever I restart my computer or shutdown->startup, I notice that startup programs (e.g the Logitech Application for my mouse, Google Drive sync etc) do not run unless I sign out and sign back in. I can constantly replicate this.
I'm not sure if this has to do with me disabling hibernation (I did this on day one of getting my notebook).
The problem with this situation is that I disable my touchpad because I have a wireless mouse, but on occasions where I don't have a mouse available, I can press the Asus instant-on button and I have it set to toggle the touchpad on/off function. Because the startup services aren't loading, I'm unable to use that button now and I'm stuck using my keyboard to try to manually turn it on.

I recently went to command prompt on my main pc and did : chkdsk /f /r on my main computer.
It said "the current thing is in use, would you like to run check disk on startup? (Y/N) I put Y, then restarted my computer. Then it was stuck on 27% for about an hour, so I got worried and restarted my computer about two or three more times. it says "scanning and repairing drive (C 27% complete)" and none of the times it would load regular windows so I decided to just stick with it.
It's been over 3 hours, and it's still stuck on 27%. How can I disable it or how long will it take?
system info HP desktop
12gb ram
2 tb hard drive
windows 8
Also I tried f8 and it just brings me back to system restore, and when I tried that it just gave me a black screen, so i'm just letting my PC sit and do the C: repair

So I've been experiencing this pretty much from the first day after installing Windows 8.1.
It goes as follows:
1. I power on the PC (or restart), windows boots up, I put in the password and it is fairly quick to enter destkop mode.
2. Now this is when my issue occurs, the startup programs may take up to 2 minutes to start load.
This is not because my computer is slow or anything like that, it almost seems like there is a set delay and only then my programs are allowed to start loading. Once they start loading, it only takes couple of seconds. The problem is, they won't start - only after I hang in destkop for about a minute or two.

I have had my Windows 8.1 Pro x64 install since February. Now I think it is time to deal with this once and for all.
I have an extremely powerful computer, 3930k, 64gb ram, RIVE, 840 Pro SSD so hardware is not the problem.
I recently got another Windows 8 (enterprise) laptop (not 8.1) to compare with, and it boots at exactly the same time as my desktop, but the laptop loads all startup items within 1-3 sec, but my desktop takes as said 1 minute and 20 seconds each time.
I have used this guide and many similar: Startup Delay Time - Reduce in Windows 8
I once changed the value to 10 minutes in milliseconds, and it took 10 minutes, but when I change to 0 milliseconds, or lets say 1000 ms for 1 second, it still takes 1 min and 20 seconds.
On my laptop I can change the value StartupDelayInMSec however I want and it will work, but I cannot have it low on my desktop and make it launch all startup items below 1 min and 20 sec.

I5 4670k
MSI g45 z78 mobo
16 GB G.Skill 1866
samsung 840 evo SSD
toshiba 2 TB HDD
EVGA GTX 760
I have completely installed a clean win 8.1 install and still have this freezing issue. It happens after i login and after my bitdefender internet security loads fully i try to click on the desktop icons but they are frozen. My mouse moves and i can click on the taskbar and startbutton and CRTL+ALT+DELETE as well. It freezes the desktop icons for 30seconds max. I have booted into safemode and it occurs there as well.
I have ran multiple malware and antivirus scans, sfc/scannow, DISM /Online/Cleanup-Image/RestoreHealth, checked my event viewer for any errors, ran chk dsk, bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes, i cant figure it out. All drivers are up to date, I disabled my lan adapter since i am using wifi. Windows updates are updated, defragged the harddrives, and I been reading through forum after forum but i have not seen this exact problem before. Also this is on stock BIOS no overclock, I also monitored the cpu and memory usage during the time of freezing and it nothing out of the ordinary usage, cpu is kept within 5% and memory is at 20% or less.

I recently installed Windows 8.1 on my Inspiron 7520 and I noticed that during the startup the disk usage is around 98/99% of my Samsung SSD 840 Pro 120gb.
I saw a lot of posts where the users complain that, during this high usage of the disk, apps don't open, the system freezes around 5 minutes and after that, there are random high usages, even on idle. But in my case this high usage lasts only few seconds (around 30s), I can open some apps with no problems and never happens again on idle, only if I restart Explorer.exe. If I restart it, it happens all again.
My question is : Is it normal? The high usage only on startup? My only worry is mess up with my SSD due this usage.
On Performance Monitor, the process which writes a lot is System. I disabled every 3rd party app on startup.

My PC boots up in 10-15 seconds, but then it sits at my desktop with everything functional for about 10-15 minutes before my startup items (Battle.net, Spotify, DNSCrypt, etc.) actually start loading up. Even after the items have loaded up, Windows Update continues to tell me that the service is not loaded and that I should reboot. I have downloaded the .zip from the forums including all the default services reg files, ran them all to return to default, even ran Tweaking.com Windows Repair, still the same issue.

I'd like to change the order in which certain programs in my startup folder load. I don't need to know how to add or remove programs from the startup folder, and I'm not talking about security or system programs. I'm talking about some programs I've added to my computer, which I use all the time in my research work, and I just want them to wind up in a different order on my taskbar for ease in switching back & forth, making notes, etc.
