i have problem with my dualboot. When installing ubuntu 13.04 and window 8 along each other, windows 8 won't hybernate (screen just gets blank and lock itself), tha same with turning computer off (when fast bootup is enabled). When i recover mbr using bootrec.exe /fixmbr (basicly switch back from GRUB2 so i cannot boot into linux) everything works fine.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have Asus Maximus V formula z77 with latest EUFI firmware, and EVGA GTX 680 classified with EUFI firmware. Bios is set to fast boot etc, and it is enabled in windows, but I'm seeing no difference from before. I was using boot racer and seeing 11-14 second windows load times with another 10-15 til desktop. Averaging around 28 second boot speeds, whether from a fast boot shut down or a restart. My OS drive is a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB.
My windows 7 booted faster on an OCZ Vertex 4 128GB.
Windows to go doesn't seem to have a Fast boot option -- Not a real issue since I use an SSD for this but just curious. I suppose if Windows to Go is being used on different computers and the idea is to use the external device totally then it obviously doesn't make sense to store a file on the Host PC's HDD.
Anyway two screenshots -- you can see the Windows to Go doesn't have a fast boot option. Ist screenshot is from Windows to Go -- both running Windows 8.1 enterprise update 1 x-64 on REAL (not Virtual) Machines.
I recently installed windows 8.1 and there is a problem with the windows Fast Start up (hybrid boot) feature as sometimes it works and windows starts very fast and sometimes it doesn't starts fast but just take sometime to start as if I started from a cold boot. I tried everything from inside the windows to solve this problem but nothing worked
I read in some threads that this fast boot technology works by saving the system into a hibernation file in the system drive when you shutdown the PC and at boot Hybrid boot well just use this hibernation file to start up faster by loading some system related files from it.
So I thinks that sometimes it loads the information from the hibernation file to load the system fast and sometimes it doesn't load anything from the hibernation file and load as if it was starting on a cold boot.
I accidentally deleted my Fast Boot boot options and when I enable it my laptop restarts and shows the BIOS, without booting into my system(s). However, when I enable CSM boot it gives me option of booting into my systems. I want to restore my Fast Boot options so my laptop boots up faster and basically because my laptop is made for Fast Boot.

I've now optimized my remaining Windows XP system --removed all the junk and duplicate programs which run on later versions of Windows so I've got a nice small tidy XP system -- basically Scanner (old canon photo scanner N1240), some VINYL editing and cutting software, OCR software, Minidisc software (still great for portable RECORDING !!) and an HP plotter and one or two odd programs. I don't need Photoshop or office any more in the XP system nor Ms Office, and I don't bother with the Internet on it either so no security problems there.
I've kept connectivity for printing (Epson 1400 printer) - the whole OS is 12 GB and it boots up in about 2 Secs (a VM running from a Linux host) --I've allocated it 1 GB - I'm sure I could run it in 768 MB too.
On my 8GB laptop it runs fine concurrently with a Windows 8.1 VM (allocated 4GB RAM for that) both on a Linux Host.
I am using Windows 8 64 Bit and have lost the password for the Administrator Account (Local). I am only able to login using the Standard Account and unable to create any more admin accounts or make any changes, I am even unable to perform the Gateway Recovery as its asking for the Administrator Password. I even can't enter the BIOS to disable the Fast Boot or change the First Boot to USB so that I can use any other Image of Windows 8 to reinstall.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure what's exactly the problem but sometimes Windows 8.1 hangs at the Windows logo at boot with Fast Startup enabled on a mSATA SSD with my Lenovo Y570 laptop.
My laptop does not support Secure Boot/GPT or UEFI, so I'm really unsure if that's the problem.
Once I disable Fast Startup the boot process never hangs ever but it makes my bootup time slightly slower.
When I lock my screen and leave my computer to do tasks while I'm away, the computer goes into hibernation after an hour or so. I tried fiddling with the power options, but no joy. I need to have my computer running while I'm away as I have it doing tasks like rendering video etc. I cannot have it go to sleep!

Whenever I shutdown properly and then start again, the Desktop loads fine and after a few seconds of coming to the desktop. I see a black screen in front of me, I try to press num lock on and off to see if the system froze, it indeed froze. I disabled fastboot, after that even if I start after shutdown, it boots fine.
If I restart, it boots fine. Not sure why as my system should be fully compatible with fast boot. Here is my system specs, everything is updated as of posting:

Windows 8 is clean-installed on a new primary partition of a harddisk. All device-drivers came from DVD Windows 8 Setup, there is no any driver updated yet.
Windows 8 can go hibernation but can't resume from the hibernation. The Windows 8 logo dissappeared fast and the laptop immediatelly went off, I didn't see any blue screen.
Here I attached some files that are collected by SF_Diagnostics_Tool.
MEMTEST86 reported no error. BIOS has been updated to latest version (before ver.3303, after ver.3315).
I'm having a BSOD (attempting to switch from DPc) error message.
I've attached the minidumps.
Windows 8 worked great until I shut it down, went to turn it back on and it is HIBERNATING. I shut it down, took the battery out, left it plugged out, but when I try to turn it back on it just says "hibernating".
how to get windows 8 out of hibernation.
I'm also having problems getting the crash dump with the diagnostic tool. O.o It isn't creating a folder on my desktop. I've enabled crash info collection, too.
Edit: Nvm. Got the crash dump. It saved it on my other drive for some reason :P. Uploading now.
My PC takes its sweet time to boot given the specs it has. (around 1.75 mins) Especially the "black" part seems to take so long. I've fastboot enabled and I use UEFI. how to make the PC boot faster ?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am dual booting Windows 8 and win7. I actually have Windows 8 installed on its own hard drive and win 7 installed in its own hard drive. The win7 hard drive has been in use for the past 2 years and I have had Windows 8 running for about a week now. I purchased another hard drive for Windows 8 and left the old Win7 as it was.
I also have 3 other hard drives in the system. Everything is formatted NTFS.
So my system is as follows
Drive C - Boot Drive - I physically swap out the dedicated hard drive for Win 8 or Win 7
Drive D - internal 250 GB sata drive
Drive F - internal 250 GB sata drive
Drive H - internal 250 GB hard drive.
I have been running this config for about 2 years under Win7 with no problems.
The problem that I have now is when I swap the boot drive and boot up a different OS than last time (Like booting Windows 8, powering down system, swap boot drive, boot Win7) the system always says that there are problems on the 3 non-boot drives. It runs chkdsk(it least that is what it look like) and processes the 3 non boot disks one at a time which take about 10-12 minutes for all 3. Most of the time it finds no problems, but about 1 out of 5 boots will find a problem with one of the disks and then fixes it. The disks seem to be OK while I am running. I then power down and swap boot drive and reboot the other os and we start all over again. I am powering the system completely down for each reboot to make sure that the disk cache is flushed.So far the disk problems have been fixed by chkdsk at boot, but I am sure the day will come when the disk cannot be fixed and I will loose data.
I have a DELL Inspiron 15 3521 running Windows 8.1 x64. Whenever I wake up the computer after hibernating my webcam is not working properly. A yellow exclamation mark is shown on the entry "Intel 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller - 1E2D" under USB Controllers in Device Manager.
View 2 Replies View RelatedOne thing I noticed about Windows 8 is that there doesn't seem to be an obvious way to put my laptop into hibernation. For clarification, this means that that everything that is loaded into the RAM is written to a file on the HDD. The device then fully powers down. Upon pressing the power button again, the device will resume, similar to the way it does in sleep mode, but without have the power drain associated with storing the windows session in the volatile memory.
I went into the power settings and enabled hybrid sleep for both plugged in and on battery, but when I clicking on the power option in settings (by using the shortcut Win + I or by moving your mouse to the bottom left corner of the screen) there is only an option to put it into sleep mode. I know that it isn't doing hibernation because when it goes into hibernation, you must press the power button to bring it out of hibernation. I want it this way to reduce battery drain and to prevent accidental resuming if the laptop somehow opens while in my backpack...
I close my laptop before going to bed. And some mornings I wake up, and open my laptop, only to find out that it has shut itself down while I was sleeping, and now windows wants me to send an error report. This has been getting rather annoying.

I don't turn it on, just when I wake its on (I check the Event Viewer to see what time it turns on). I thought that hibernate mode was zero power, so how would it be able to turn on? Is there a setting saying that it should turn on at that time?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a random/strange thing happening on my Windows 8 Pro (x64). I have set up the system settings so that when I close the lid my laptop goes to hibernation. However, when I wake up my laptop from hibernation, from time to time, hibernation option disappears from system settings (I attached to screenshots). And, to get it back, I need to restart the laptop. This does not happen all the time. But when it happens, I don't get any hibernation option. As a result, closing the lid puts the laptop into sleep rather than hibernation and that is not very convenient when I want to leave fast. To get hibernation option back I need to restart my laptop.

View 4 Replies View RelatedOver the last few days I built a new PC with ASUS A87 Pro MB, no PCIe cards, and Samsung ssd 840 Pro boot drive. Lots of changes on a daily basis. For a while, the FAST STARTUP hybrid boot was working. Then it stopped, and I'm trying to debug it.
When PAST STARTUP is enabled in power options, I get a repeatable Critical Error - Windows did not shut down properly, and the startup time is as long as it would be without FAST STARTUP enabled. There are no BSODS, and no apparent harm from the Critical Shutdown error.
Windows 8 installation. Apparently, my PC now randomly decides not to boot properly either from sleep or hibernation. It will go into sleep just fine (though managing to keep it sleeping for more than 5 seconds has been a chore itself), but sometimes it won't be able to come back from sleep properly: it will either black screen on me (very uncommon), or it will keep restarting several times, until either the "Automatic Recovery" pops up, or I manually reset it.
In all my years working with computers, I haven't seen anything like this :/ Services look fine, running apps also look fine, no virus found on a complete check of all almost 10TB of data...
Right now, I'm just about ready to drop the whole thing and go back to Windows 7.
I've got a problem - after I turn my notebook Asus M51Va into hybernation and then turn it on, usually (not always) it crashes with BSOD (hal.dll 0x0000009f). When I start system after turning it off - loading of Windows never ends with BSOD and everything is ok.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have used Pragon HDM 14 to migrate existing Win 8.1 installation (gpt with uefi and secure boot) to new hdd. Migration went ok, system booted up from new hdd. However after that it seems hibernation does not work. When I hibernate and power on back pc, it does a clean start. System event log says the system has shut down inapriopertly. I have tried to turn off and on hibernation, disable safe boot, nothing worked.
