I accidentally deleted my Fast Boot boot options and when I enable it my laptop restarts and shows the BIOS, without booting into my system(s). However, when I enable CSM boot it gives me option of booting into my systems. I want to restore my Fast Boot options so my laptop boots up faster and basically because my laptop is made for Fast Boot.

I upgraded from win7 to Windows 8 and i had notice that i don't have fast startup and hibernation option in shutdown options. I checked in command prompt and i have this and . Laptop starting slower then my 7 year old Toshiba running Windows 8. Is this coused by lack of Ram. I have 6gb.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have Asus Maximus V formula z77 with latest EUFI firmware, and EVGA GTX 680 classified with EUFI firmware. Bios is set to fast boot etc, and it is enabled in windows, but I'm seeing no difference from before. I was using boot racer and seeing 11-14 second windows load times with another 10-15 til desktop. Averaging around 28 second boot speeds, whether from a fast boot shut down or a restart. My OS drive is a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB.
My windows 7 booted faster on an OCZ Vertex 4 128GB.
I've now optimized my remaining Windows XP system --removed all the junk and duplicate programs which run on later versions of Windows so I've got a nice small tidy XP system -- basically Scanner (old canon photo scanner N1240), some VINYL editing and cutting software, OCR software, Minidisc software (still great for portable RECORDING !!) and an HP plotter and one or two odd programs. I don't need Photoshop or office any more in the XP system nor Ms Office, and I don't bother with the Internet on it either so no security problems there.
I've kept connectivity for printing (Epson 1400 printer) - the whole OS is 12 GB and it boots up in about 2 Secs (a VM running from a Linux host) --I've allocated it 1 GB - I'm sure I could run it in 768 MB too.
On my 8GB laptop it runs fine concurrently with a Windows 8.1 VM (allocated 4GB RAM for that) both on a Linux Host.
Windows to go doesn't seem to have a Fast boot option -- Not a real issue since I use an SSD for this but just curious. I suppose if Windows to Go is being used on different computers and the idea is to use the external device totally then it obviously doesn't make sense to store a file on the Host PC's HDD.
Anyway two screenshots -- you can see the Windows to Go doesn't have a fast boot option. Ist screenshot is from Windows to Go -- both running Windows 8.1 enterprise update 1 x-64 on REAL (not Virtual) Machines.
I am using Windows 8 64 Bit and have lost the password for the Administrator Account (Local). I am only able to login using the Standard Account and unable to create any more admin accounts or make any changes, I am even unable to perform the Gateway Recovery as its asking for the Administrator Password. I even can't enter the BIOS to disable the Fast Boot or change the First Boot to USB so that I can use any other Image of Windows 8 to reinstall.

I tried everything from inside the windows to solve this problem but nothing worked
I read in some threads that this fast boot technology works by saving the system into a hibernation file in the system drive when you shutdown the PC and at boot Hybrid boot well just use this hibernation file to start up faster by loading some system related files from it.
So I thinks that sometimes it loads the information from the hibernation file to load the system fast and sometimes it doesn't load anything from the hibernation file and load as if it was starting on a cold boot.
I just got a refurbished ASUS K75DE laptop, and it came with Windows 8 on it. I am wanting to run a dual boot with Win7, so I disabled fast-boot just fine, and went into the UEFI BIOS and disabled the secure boot.
While I was there, I did like I have always done and set a BIOS boot-up password. I then proceed to boot to my Win7 installer USB Flash drive, but I was running low on battery power so I aborted the install and shut the computer down to try again later.
Now however when I get into BIOS to select boot priority, all options are grayed out except for system time and a few other non-essentials. At the bottom of the first BIOS screen it says "User Level : User" and I can't seem to find a way to reverse this issue. So now I'm stuck, can't boot to anything but the HDD because it is first by default.
For a few days I have been having some problems with my computer. Whenever I shutdown properly and then start again, the Desktop loads fine and after a few seconds of coming to the desktop. I see a black screen in front of me, I try to press num lock on and off to see if the system froze, it indeed froze. I disabled fastboot, after that even if I start after shutdown, it boots fine.
If I restart, it boots fine. Not sure why as my system should be fully compatible with fast boot. Here is my system specs, everything is updated as of posting:

After creating a UEFI bootable USB thumb drive with Rufus (using Windows 8.1 Enterprise ISO x64), for a Dell Optiplex 3010 (configured as UEFI only, no CSM, latest firmware version, Windows 8 installed), I didn't see a USB boot option, so I tried to add one manually. Unfortunately I erased the existing boot option (boot manager) by mistake. Although there were two boot options for PXE booting, the machine will not start anymore, even when there is an active WDS server on the network.
I also see Led's 2 and 3 lighting up, meaning according to the manual 'hardware ok but bios possibly damaged/corrupt'.
I understand I cannot start the machine from a bios boot disk because of GPT partitioning, and the UEFI USB boot disk I made might be corrupt (as it didn't show up as a boot option), however I don't understand why it won't boot from the PXE network card, as these boot options are still there.
I can't enter my BIOS/UEFI after activating "MSI Fast Boot" in the BIOS/UEFI.
I read somewhere about "GO2BIOS",but my installation disk didn't came with that software.

i have problem with my dualboot. When installing ubuntu 13.04 and window 8 along each other, windows 8 won't hybernate (screen just gets blank and lock itself), tha same with turning computer off (when fast bootup is enabled). When i recover mbr using bootrec.exe /fixmbr (basicly switch back from GRUB2 so i cannot boot into linux) everything works fine.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently partitioned my Asus ROG G750JW into 2 main parts: One 300GB for a mackintosh, and one 6** (remaining space) for windows 8. That worked fine, until I tried to format what I thought was random partition with a size of 128MBs. I believe this to be the EFI partition, and you know what that does. I cannot boot to windows 8 or mac, and windows boot manager no longer shows up in BIOS. I have a windows 8 reinstall disk and the hackintosh install disk. When trying to refresh from the windows reinstall disk, I get an error saying that the disk is locked. What I need to know is if there is any way to restore this without erasing my hard drive. I do not have access to a windows computer (I can if I have to, but it wouldn't be ideal), but do have access to a mac. I don't have restore points, even if I did they are on the now one-huge partition, which by the way is listed as MBR format.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have three options in the Advanced Startup - Use a device menu that I believe are from the previous owner of this Surface Pro. I have ubuntu, linuxmint, and BestCrypt Volume Encryption. How can I remove those options since they do not apply to anything on this device?
I looked in msconfig and nothing but the normal Windows 8 is listed under the boot tab. Also only have the Windows 8 install listed when I run bcdedit.
I used Acronis to delete all partitions on my Surface Pro. So there is no recovery, C drive, nothing at all. Just a blank SSD drive without any partitions. Now the Surface Pro refuses to boot to any of my USB sticks so I can clean install an OS like I wanted to do. I've verified both of my USB sticks are boot able, as I'm able to boot my desktop computer to them in order to install an OS. But when I try to boot the Surface Pro Gen1 to the USB stick, I get a quick squiggly screen and then I'm dumped right into the system BIOS. I've made sure to power off the Surface Pro, then hold down volume- while pressing the power button, then releasing volume- after seeing the Surface splash screen. But it never goes to any sort of boot menu or anything. Just takes me right into the EFI BIOS.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to 8.1 (mistake) and have been having issues with my harddrive. Just today, I restarted my computer only to get a "windows failed to start" message. I went into the recovery options, and attemped a system restore (didnt work), system refresh (recovery media wasn't present), and CMD commands (chkdsk) and even sfc /scannow which I can't seem to get to run, I always get the "Will start on next boot" message, which it never does. So I attempted using an ISO with the windows 8.1 professional. Tried everything I did above, and still nothing. Refresh fails with the CD, and when i try to install a new partition, it only gives me the option of upgrading (which i cant) or reinstalling everything deleting anything in the process. I don't understand why I can't install on a new partition like I did with Windows 7.
View 5 Replies View Relatedmy OS is Windows 8.1 64-bit. It boots just fine, but I suddenly found out that something wrong happened with my BCD store. Tried more workarounds but none worked. The last I found How To Restore Windows 8 Boot Options Menu ended on bcdedit error mentioned below. The problem indicates with following signs:
- bcdedit /enum prints error "The boot configuration data store could not be opened."
- bcdboot C:windows prints error "BFSVC Error: BcdOpenSystemStore failed with unexpected error code, Status
= [c000015c]"
- msconfig's boot tab shows empty OSes list (nothing on the tab is clickablle)
- the same with System Properties, Advanced tab, Startup and Restore dialog (OS dropdown has no entries)
- Trying to enter diagnostic boot by Shft + Restart doesnot seem to offer full recovery menu. It boots to GUI boot menu offering Continue or Troubleshooting, Troubleshooting submenu offers Manage UEFI options (this brings me to BIOS setup after reboot) and Shut down. No manage boot options, no other choices.
All of this point me to that my booting configuration is somehow ill (I wonder a bit that Windows still can start).
I partitioned my hard drive and installed a second copy of my Windows 8.1
I like to experiment with registry settings, tweaks, etc so I use the second installation as a guiney pig, leaving my primary copy untouched.
My question is how to I get the second copy listed on the graphical Boot Options Menu? Right now, I have to press [ESC] on reboot to select it in BIOS settings.
I recently purchased an Asus N56VJ with Windows 8 pre-installed. At first I was trying to downgrade to Windows 7, but could not get past the windows splash screen trying to do a clean install . Anyway, while I was trying to figure out how to install windows 7, I was messing around in the bios. I decided to just stick with the Windows 8, but my bios is screwed up. I do not have any boot configuration options anymore. I tried to flash my bios, but the bios was still the same. I did a full reset on my machine, and still no change in the bios. Is there any way to get my bios options back to the factory settings with all the options?

I went into the BIOS and used "Restore Defaults" and now all Boot Option Priorities are deleted.
Each time I boot the laptop, it automatically goes to BIOS (or UEFI).
I tried inserting the Windows 7 disc so I can access Startup Repair or Command Prompt but it freezes before it could get anywhere even when I tried it with an external CD/DVD drive.
I cannot get the laptop to boot to the hard drive or CD drive at all,
how I can reset the boot option priorities so it will be boot to the hard drive again.
I went into my power options to change some of the advanced settings and most of them are missing? I am on windows 8.1 with a week old Surface Pro 3. I want to say I read somewhere that hyper-v can cause options to be missing, but I honestly don't even know what that is and I don't have it installed.

I recently deleted a user account, and clicked yes to also delete all associated files...the user was successfully deleted, however, the user's folders/files remain, and cannot be deleted. Is it possible to associate that user's folder with a new user's login? If not, what needs to be done in order to delete the remaining user folder?

I then go fishing... go for a coffee... have a bath...
And when I get back 5 hours later... hey presto... Windows gives me a list of results.
I know there was some indexing programs - like Google Desk (erm... I think that's what it's called - I could just be making that up from my mind)... I know Microsoft had one as well... and a few other 3rd party programs where available.Where are they?

What I've noticed with Win 8 x64, is that when this type of shutdown is executed, Fast Startup is disabled and when the PC is turned back on, boot-up time is significantly increased (similar to a restart, where Fast Startup is also disabled). Is there a way around this? It seems unlikely that all these applications do something wrong. Maybe Windows treats this type of shutdown differently?

I've already tried all steps from this topic: Fast Startup - Force Use by All Users in Windows 8 but no success - system performs full shutdown. The only solution that works for me is shutting down with command "shutdown.exe /s /hybrid /t 0". Then system shuts down in ~5 sec and starts in ~15 s.
If you shut down a computer from the right-click-left-bottom-corner menu in desktop mode, then click Shutdown -> system performs full shutdown. If you click Shutdown in charms bar -> system performs hybrid shutdown. Now my PC is starting in 8s, laptop in 15s.
I have a desktop with Windows 8 upgraded to 8.1, I can enter the BIOS setup by pressing the DEL key only when the preceding shutdown is a complete shutdown (shutdown with fast startup turned off).
If the desktop is shutdown with fast startup turned on (incomplete shutdown), and Windows cannot be loaded during the subsequent starting. How can I enter the BIOS to select to boot from a USB stick?
I've had problems since yesterday regarding the hybrid (fast startup) shutdown.
The machine just won't do it, instead it does a full shutdown. I have the option thickened under power options but it still doesn't work.
The only software change was running a portable version of 00 Defrag 16. I used a portable version because installing it would cause the problem I described above (maybe something about reg files?). I've used the portable version a few days ago but just to scan the drive, yesterday I started to defragment the drive and then the problem surfaced.
