Setup Installation :: Windows Boot Manager - Deleted UEFI Boot Option?

Mar 24, 2014

After creating a UEFI bootable USB thumb drive with Rufus (using Windows 8.1 Enterprise ISO x64), for a Dell Optiplex 3010 (configured as UEFI only, no CSM, latest firmware version, Windows 8 installed), I didn't see a USB boot option, so I tried to add one manually. Unfortunately I erased the existing boot option (boot manager) by mistake. Although there were two boot options for PXE booting, the machine will not start anymore, even when there is an active WDS server on the network.

I also see Led's 2 and 3 lighting up, meaning according to the manual 'hardware ok but bios possibly damaged/corrupt'.

I understand I cannot start the machine from a bios boot disk because of GPT partitioning, and the UEFI USB boot disk I made might be corrupt (as it didn't show up as a boot option), however I don't understand why it won't boot from the PXE network card, as these boot options are still there.

Windows Locked Hard Drive After Boot Failure

Oct 17, 2013

I have windows 8 installed on c drive and Linux mint installed on separate hard disk. Everything was working fine before I installed kubuntu from Linux mint. After installation I couldn't get into windows 8 because it was giving error message 0*c000000f. I tried to refresh Windows but no avail because windows has locked that drive and I couldn't access it. Than I decided to backup important files from windows 8 hard disk from Linux. I accessed windows 8 drive but three folders were missing "Windows" , "Users" and "Program Files(64)" other than that I can access all files and problem is all important data is in user folder.

Than I installed windows 8 on different partition still same thing cant access those three folders. Is there any possible way to simply access user folder?

Can't Get Into Windows Boot Manager To Change Boot Order

Feb 22, 2014

My Dell Inspiron 660 is 2 months old. It came with Windows 8 preinstalled. My problem: I am trying to change the boot order so I can boot from CD ROM as a first option. I have tried using the "F" keys on boot, but it just ignores me and goes on to boot up. I have also tried the "Advanced Options > UEFI Firmware Settings" in "Change PC Settings" and got the same results. I spent some time on the phone with a Dell tech. After trying all the things I had already tried, he and his supervisor decided I must have a bad Motherboard. Does this sound right? Is there any way to repair this problem?

Computer Will Not Boot To SSD / Forcing To Use Windows Boot Manager

May 29, 2014

I had an issue with my Windows 8 where I was forced to reinstall it. I have completely wiped my SSD and reinstalled Windows 8 on it. However, now it will not let me pick my boot order. It is forcing me to use Windows Boot Manager as my Boot Option 1. If I use anything else, I just get a black screen with a blinking line cursor.

It didn't use to do this before I had to reinstall. I'm not sure how to fix this. It also will not let me choose F11 boot options, it always is forcing me to use Windows Boot Manager.

How do I make it so I can boot from whichever boot order I want, instead of using Boot Manager?

Windows 7 / 8 Dual Boot - Locked In Automatic Repair / Can't Refresh

Jan 23, 2013

I have a Windows 7 / Windows 8 dual boot setup that was initially working fine. When attempting to update the graphics drivers in Windows 8 last week, something went wrong and the system crashed. Now when I attempt to boot into Windows 8, it goes into the Attempting Automated Repairs loop which never finishes, even when left running for several hours. I attempted to boot off of the Windows 8 installation CD and do a Refresh but it just errors out saying Windows could not be refreshed.

Deleted EFI Partition Now Can't Boot

Mar 11, 2014

I recently partitioned my Asus ROG G750JW into 2 main parts: One 300GB for a mackintosh, and one 6** (remaining space) for windows 8. That worked fine, until I tried to format what I thought was random partition with a size of 128MBs. I believe this to be the EFI partition, and you know what that does. I cannot boot to windows 8 or mac, and windows boot manager no longer shows up in BIOS. I have a windows 8 reinstall disk and the hackintosh install disk. When trying to refresh from the windows reinstall disk, I get an error saying that the disk is locked. What I need to know is if there is any way to restore this without erasing my hard drive. I do not have access to a windows computer (I can if I have to, but it wouldn't be ideal), but do have access to a mac. I don't have restore points, even if I did they are on the now one-huge partition, which by the way is listed as MBR format.

Deleted All Partitions On Surface Pro Now Cannot Boot

Mar 2, 2014

I used Acronis to delete all partitions on my Surface Pro. So there is no recovery, C drive, nothing at all. Just a blank SSD drive without any partitions. Now the Surface Pro refuses to boot to any of my USB sticks so I can clean install an OS like I wanted to do. I've verified both of my USB sticks are boot able, as I'm able to boot my desktop computer to them in order to install an OS. But when I try to boot the Surface Pro Gen1 to the USB stick, I get a quick squiggly screen and then I'm dumped right into the system BIOS. I've made sure to power off the Surface Pro, then hold down volume- while pressing the power button, then releasing volume- after seeing the Surface splash screen. But it never goes to any sort of boot menu or anything. Just takes me right into the EFI BIOS.

How To Boot To F11 Recovery Manager

Sep 17, 2014

My problem is that when i try to boot to F11 Recovery Manager i get the "error 0xc0000225" message.

Here is how my partitions look -As you can see i have the Recovery partition there, it is actually 17.5GB in actual size. Here is a what the Recovery (D) folder looks like -In the "HP Recovery Manager" it also says on the left "Disabled: Recovery partition is removed" but on the right side it actually allows me to remove it, which doesn't make sense, this image will show you what i mean -

I actually do have the Recovery Media on a USB in which i created from this very drive, i can boot the PC from the USB which then gives me options to factory restore etc.

The whole point is that i want this to work without reverting back to the recovery USB, is there any way at all to repair this?

BIOS Changes Windows Boot Manager Order By Itself

Jul 14, 2014

I have an error message at boot time that says [fail] twice then boots normally.

I have tracked it down in other posts to the bios which I change and it works for awhile but then mysteriously changes itself back.

Here is what I do.
F2 at Dell logo
move tab to "boot"
Reorder the boot order to the following:
Windows Boot Manager
UEFI Onboard LAN IPv4
UEFI Onboard LAN IPv6

then save and exit
machine reboots without error message
Runs/boots fine for awhile then message reappears.
Going back into BIOS shows Windows Boot Manager has moved to the bottom of the list again.

Repeating the fix is only temporary.

How can I set up the BIOS to stay where I put it?

I have a Dell running Win 8.1

Boot Manager Is Missing Cannot Get To Setup Screen

I have looked around a bit and all solutions to this problem require me to get into the startup screen when booting from the installation disk upon startup. The problem is I cannot get to that screen!!

I am a uni student and can download windows 8 OS for free at msdnaa, I have done that and made an image file on a dvd and usb stick. I then put both of those into my dell N5010 (which is running win 7 now) and try to access them upon startup, (I go into the boot menu and try booting from booth DVD and USB) and both times I just get the error "boot manager is missing press ctr, alt, del to restart) so I cannot even get into the installation screen to do the repair that is says I need to do on all the other solutions I have seen.

Each time I boot the laptop, it automatically goes to BIOS (or UEFI).

I tried inserting the Windows 7 disc so I can access Startup Repair or Command Prompt but it freezes before it could get anywhere even when I tried it with an external CD/DVD drive.

I cannot get the laptop to boot to the hard drive or CD drive at all,

how I can reset the boot option priorities so it will be boot to the hard drive again.

Lenovo Laptop With Windows 8 - Lost UEFI Boot Manager After Installing XUbuntu

Jan 26, 2014

I have a Lenovo laptop that came with Windows 8 pre-installed. I decided I want to dual boot with XUbuntu.

I shrank my partition and left space for the linux distro. I installed xubuntu into the free space, and even set the bootloader installation to be in that partition as well.

Then after installation, I only get the GRUB bootloader. How to get Windows 8 back and I finally be able to boot into either OS.

However, I have lost the blue UEFI boot manager that Windows 8 should display.

So I get EasyBCD on Windows, try lots of options to regain an original boot manager. But instead of the typical blue UEFI screen, it created a black screen with my boot options (and the linux option doesn't boot from there).

So to summarise, my boot sequence is like this:
-Switch on laptop
-See GRUB, with default pointing to Windows. I am able to boot to linux from here.
-Click Windows and then see Windows Boot Manager (black) with Windows and Linux
-Click Windows and it boots. Click linux and get an error.

I have secure boot enabled, and I installed xubuntu in secure boot mode.

Windows Won't Boot Without CD In Drive

Jul 5, 2013

I have three hard drives. One is a Kingston Hyperx SSD 120GB. The other two are for internal storage and are WD 500GB Blacks. I recently upgraded my computer. My new mother board is the ASUS M5A99X. I installed Windows 8 just fine back in Dec 2012 and it worked up until April-Mayish. My USB Hub was causing my computer to halt before POST. After exchanging it with a new hub, I was able to boot just fine.

Later that same day, I cleaned out the dust in my computer and added another harddrive. I wasn't able to boot Windows 8. It would just stop with a blinking cursor right before it should show the four blue panes. I went into BIOS and it didn't have my SSD listed. I accidentally unplugged the SATA cable for my SSD and forgot to plug it back in. After I plugged it back in I set the boot priority back to my SSD first.

I still couldn't boot so inserted my Windows CD to reformat. After it says "Press any key to boot from CD...." I didn't press anything and it loaded into Windows just fine. I loaded Windows this way for a while until I was able to troubleshoot it. After reformatting, I get "Please select proper boot device.." message. If I put the CD in, that goes away and it loads into windows after saying "Press any key to boot from the CD..." Here's what I've done to troubleshoot so far:

1. Set SSD to first in boot priority order in BIOS. Forced boot to my SSD in BIOS. Changed SATA from AHCI to RAID (lol) to IDE.

I've used bootrec.exe and tried
bootrec /RebuildBcdbootrec /fixMbrbootrec /fixboot
This still didn't resolve my issue.

2. I flashed my BIOS to 1708 because it was going to fix an issue I had with a USB device.

3. I reformatted Windows 8 with all drives unplugged except my SSD.

4. I've unplugged all SATA devices except my harddrive and tried to boot.

5. I've set the 2nd partition (90+GB) to active partition on my SSD.

My next step is to RMA the motherboard.

Drive D Is Locked Into Attribute Of Read Only

Jul 13, 2014

I have a 1.5 yr. old ASUS notebook which has been upgraded from the initial Windows 8.0 to 8.1 and then to PRO several months ago. The PRO was done in an attempt to install the encryption technology, Bitlocker. Shortly after the install of Bitlocker, I found it would not work and traced it back to a discussion with ASUS who said this particular notebook was not built with the ability to be encrypted. (This is the second notebook/laptop in several months that I ran across this!) In any case, Bitlocker is not turned on anywhere, and unfortunately, I can't find any tool to remove it from my harddrive as of yet. I only mention this as a possible bearing on the issue since apparently it embeds itself in the root directory, if I am correct. This problem recently started for some unknown reason I can't contribute anything to.

My drive D: is an extension on the physical drive. When I try to manipulate and files or folders, it comes up with "the media is read only" or "the disk is write protected" all dependent on what I am trying to do and what application is open. It will, of course, allow me to copy files to C:. I have tried the following:

-CHKDSK which found nothing
-FILE CHECKER which found nothing
-PERMISSIONS checked and everyone and everything has full permissions
-DISKPART/ATTRIBUTES ran to check everything and according to the attributes on this volume, there is NO READONLY! I ran the CLEAN command 2X anyway which came up "successful" each time.
-I also ran some quality DISK MANAGEMENT software which could not make any modifications since it views the drive as "Read Only".
