Windows 8 Shutdown Error 0x00000000
Dec 12, 2013I was getting the error in the picture when I shut down Windows 8 after a session.
It seems to have gone with the latest update but worth observing nonetheless.

Windows 8 factory install on HP 500-056 updated to Windows 8.1 from the Microsoft Store.
Since the update, when I shut my computer down at night, there's a mysterious error code that doesn't stay on the desktop long enough for me to read it.
It doesn't seem to be causing any problems, but it's an error code and I don't want it there, needless to say.
Over the last few days I built a new PC with ASUS A87 Pro MB, no PCIe cards, and Samsung ssd 840 Pro boot drive. Lots of changes on a daily basis. For a while, the FAST STARTUP hybrid boot was working. Then it stopped, and I'm trying to debug it.
When PAST STARTUP is enabled in power options, I get a repeatable Critical Error - Windows did not shut down properly, and the startup time is as long as it would be without FAST STARTUP enabled. There are no BSODS, and no apparent harm from the Critical Shutdown error.
Running Windows 8 Dev. Preview on a Dell Latitude D610 (1.73Ghz, 2GB). System Hibernates fine (my main mode of powering off) but will not properly shutdown or restart. Every time I hit shutdown/restart it goes to a black screen. I know that it's still running because the power light is still on and the hard drive light flashes just as if it were still in use. I've let it sit for 3 hours in this state and it still refuses to shut down.

1. Make a shortcut
2. RegEdit change the reboot value to 0
3. And checking the main properties of the Shutdown function and removing the "Fast Start" option.
None of them worked. Sometimes my windows is giving me "Light blue" screen where is sad face icon ( ) and said that something went wrong, system need to restart, but that is only sometimes.
When I am trying to shutdown, machine calms down, screens went to black but then, restart happens.
Something changed in the last week or so that has caused the system to sometimes not automatically go to sleep and when it does not go to sleep after the selected time it won't shutdown either. When this happens and I try to shutdown the system it shuts down but then immediately reboots on it's own. This has only happened two or three times in the last week but I never had this issue until recently! It appears like I can either turn off the power via the power supply and restart to make the problem go away or if I manually put it to sleep and wake up it will power down - at least that is what worked the last time this happened. I did install update KB2962409 around the time the problem appeared?

In these days somethings strange has append to my new laptop (asus).
I cannot restart or shout down my computer anymore. When i press call the shoutdown or restart i just log off, and nothing more happens.
Even when i put my computer in sleep by closing the lid, it turns down for a few seconds, and then it turn on again.
Even more I can restart from windows only from some application (like asus update, windows update).
I have no problem in booting, restarting or shout down with linux.
So what happens is you have the charger plugged in and was indicating it is charging and you start up the machine, it would come up automatic repair for about 10 seconds then shutdown and then after it shuts down the light indicating it's charging turns off.
I assumed it was just low on charge so I left it charging for an hour and I tried again and had gotten the same results so I'm sure it's not a charge fault but rather a software failure somewhere during boot.
New Dell XPS 8500 following installation of programs and an attempt at creating a image using the built-in imaging program now fails to restart or shutdown from the start screen. When I attempted to create an image I got a statement that "there is not enough disk space to create the volume shadow copy on the storage location". I had 1.34 TB free on an external drive for an image calculated by Windows as 135.78 GB. After the image attempt the problems started. Today's session with Dell did not solve the problem. Their tech will call to walk me through reinstalling the system to the original state. I hope this is not a common Windows 8 problem.

View 5 Replies View RelatedWindows 8.1(full fresh install) will not go to sleep/shut down etc. This has been happening since I installed 8.1 a few weeks back. It works/worked fine in Windows 7 and windows 8.0 till this install. I have narrowed it down to the Ethernet Chipset ( on board Realtec RTL8110 SC )
All the settings in the device manager the powercfg commands etc etc. Disabling in device manager does not work either ...
Then today I have found out that when you take the Ethernet Cable out of the computer............it goes to sleep. Why did I not try this before? ? ? When I remove the cable from the router, it stays awake when plugged in at the computer end.
Once asleep it stays that way and if I get it to sleep by other means - PWR ButtonSleep Option in W 8.1, it stays sleeping.
Having an issue with windows 8.1 freezing when booting from shutdown?
View 9 Replies View RelatedWindows 8 shutdown process and user interface is stupid. It looks like it was designed by someone that belongs in a mental facility in a padded room. I have to logoff first then click on the screen and then click turn off computer. Start button is hidden and have a stupid different screen to bring me to. The only good thing I see with Windows 8 is it boots faster than previous Windows releases. Is there a way to make it work like previous Windows releases without spending more money?
View 3 Replies View RelatedEvery now and then when I shut down my computer it will show "Restarting" for about 1-5 seconds (My pc is fast) and the display will shut off. But the computer will still be running, the HDD and all are running. I have to do a hard shutdown by holding the power button.
I have found this in the event logger:
"The system firmware has changed the processor's memory type range registers (MTRRs) across a sleep state transition (S5). This can result in reduced resume performance."
Source: Kernel-Power
I heard it having something to do with "fast startup" or "Quick Boot" I am unsure.
When I shut down my computer, I get this thing that a program is preventing shutdown. It doesn't tell what's the name of the program, it only says that "This program is preventing shutdown".
Can any hacker see my webcam or my pictures without putting any malware or virus to my computer and without me doing anything so they can see me?
My computer is HP Pavilion 15 with Windows 8.1.
About 3 times now this has happened, I'll shutdown my PC using the tile target "C:WindowsSystem32shutdown.exe -s -t 00" and usually there is a delay in between shutting down and it randomly booting itself which makes it really weird that it isn't just an instant restart instead of shutdown. It's not a very long delay really, maybe 1-2 minutes.
The last two times I remember it was around 3:00 AM which is when it was set in Action Center Maintenance Settings to wake up the computer and run the scan. The thing is, I unchecked it from Maintenance Settings Friday night and it still happened last night (and it was kind of weird last night with daylight savings and all..) also, does the "wake up" to scan boot a completely shut down computer or just one idle/asleep?
After searching on this forum there seems to be some issues with Avast 2014 and boot issues. My 8.1 doesn't have any slow booting issues but perhaps it's related that this is the anti-virus I run.
I checked the Event Viewer Log and selected Power-Troubleshooter but I didn't see an event for the past two nights. powercfg lastwake command displays "Wake History Count - 0"
I never encountered this issue with Windows 7 or Windows 8 so it's hard to imagine it could be BIOS related?
I'm running into a really annoying issue after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8.
I first noticed it during the initial (clean) install; when the installer tried to reboot, my machine (an acer aspire 4755G) just hung after the initial shutdown. That is, after the screen turns off, the power lights and fans are still running, and the machine itself doesn't restart. (I let it sit for a good 15 minutes, and it still didn't change).
I managed to do a hard reset (power button for 5 seconds) and the install finished, but every shutdown/restart has been like that. Interestingly enough, hibernate works just fine.
I've looked at other solutions where it said to use the "bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes" command, and that didn't work.
I also turned off the "Fast Boot" option in the power settings menu. That didn't work either. So far, the only option is to do the hard shut down by holding down the power button, but that proves to be horribly inconvenient.
I've also updated all my drivers to the proprietary onces given by Acer, yet this problem still persists! It worked fine on Windows 7, so I'm not sure what went wrong here.
I upgraded from Windows 7 (64-Bit) to 8 (64-Bit). When I had 7 it took about 10 seconds to boot, but now it can take anywhere from 2-5 mins, also it doesn't shutdown (I have to hold down the power button) and it never sleeps (the screen goes off but the laptop remains running).
View 9 Replies View RelatedYesterday I upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 on my Dell XPS desktop (i7-3770, 8 GB RAM). Now, when I shutdown, sleep, or hibernate, it takes over 2 minutes for the unit to do what used to take very little time. I reinstalled the video driver (both latest and two most recent version) and each time things are back to normal the first time I do it, but after that, the 2 minute, 12 second, or so, delay reappears. I have a NVidea 620 graphics card. My Acer laptop using its built-in Intel graphics system does not have this problem and never did. I am running Classic Shell on both machines. My desktop was fine before upgrading to Windows 8.1.

Any option to stop scheduled tasks or other triggers that "Wake" your computer from sleep? I find my computer running in the morning after putting it to sleep at the end of the previous evening! I have reviewed all 41 scheduled tasks created by Windows and installed applications and "apps" and found none that have the Wake Computer check box checked. What's annoying is the fact that once woken the computer does not go back to sleep again! I am using the supplied balanced Power plan.
windows 8 is stuck on shut down screen for a longtime and if I do hard reboot with power button the same screen comes up and will not let me do anything.
I always run anti virus and am very careful about any downloads and files.
Okay, so I did an experiment which I performed a hard shutdown (holding power button for 5 seconds) and each time after that windows refuse to start normally and auto repair fails, forcing me to refresh the pc/reimage the drive/system restore/cd which is troublesome. (depends)
Last time when I was using windows xp, 7 and vista on my old pc. Whenever my pc hangs/freezes I used to be able to perform a hard shutdown and know that there won't be any real consequences.
So how to get my current pc to display this toughness because I know that eventually somewhere in the future my PC will hang for whatever reason and I need my PC to be reliable when I do a hard shutdown.
Recently, my UPS stopped working for unknown reasons, so while i sent it to repair, my computer had no backup power. Then, there was a storm here that made the lights flicker in a way that my computer shut down abruptly. Not only that, for 5 seconds it turned on and off really quickly. I was playing fallout 3 when that happened, and when i tried playing it again, my save game had corrupted.
That was not the issue though. After this, my windows installation feels unresponsive. Weird little things happen, like sometimes i enter a website's address in chrome and hit enter, yet nothing happens, a white screen loads. I have to refresh, then it works.
Also, sometimes menus don't work, like i hit Apply or Ok, but nothing happens, then i wait like 10 seconds then it works again.
Another issue is my video card. It seems to have gotten loud when i play video games, i downloaded HWMonitor and it got up to 84 C, which isn't melting temperature but it's still pretty high. (it never got past 75 on high load, now it goes up to 80 for non-intensive games).
My system has been on completely since 8.1 and has never needed to restart until I did some updates today.
Now I'm not really concerned about shutdown or restart as I will manually shut down the PC if I'm going somewhere for an extended time "I never leave anything on, power for the entire house is shut off" and will shut it off until I get back.
But the slow login is really killing me as it used to take 1 second to hear that little "tick" from the speakers and I'd see the login/splash page, but as of today I will hear that "tick" but the windows dotted circle will spin for oh.. 30 seconds than I can see my splash screen.
I've scanned my C: and D: disks, ran defender, antivirus, etc and all came back fine and I even have 90GB free out of my 120gb drive.
I started to notice a change with the clock every now and then. I finally concluded that the clock does not change during sleep, restart, or shutdown.
My computer goes to sleep often, and when it wakes up from sleep, the time is the same as when it was prior to sleeping, not synchronizing to the correct time after waking up.
I've done some research and I fell onto the official Windows thread where they explained the use of third-party-utility will cause this problem.
The big problem here is that I don't have the single clue which ones. I tried uninstalling some, not sure if I left any utilities out. The utilities I've used are the general ones for visual styles and themes.
I'm running Windows 8.1.
Does Windows 8 have a waking from sleep or shutdown chimes or sounds? When it shuts down or wakes from sleep I get no sound. When I connect removable drives or play videos I get sound.

View 9 Replies View RelatedRecently I updated my hp dv6 3122sl to Windows 8. Now, obviously the drivers provided by microsoft didn't work, so I installed the softpaq by hp in this order ....
1. sp52351 for intel hd graphics (1st gen)
2. sp50640 for my ati radeon 5470 (it's important to set compatibility with windows 7 for this one) and now the switching is working fine.
However there's a big big problem. The screen flickers 3-4 times at startup and shutdown if I enable fastboot from the control panel, and it's so annoying that I disabled it, sadly.
I tried to update drivers, using custom drivers by leshcat and later official drivers by ati (13.1 for example, which I installed over the hp ones), and the they -more or less- worked, because I could use the fastboot smoothly... but my pc had several thermal shutdowns since I installed other drivers! So I switched back to the old sp52351 and sp50640.
There it is my question: (Maybe with intel+ati 5470) have flickers at startup and shutdowns? If yes, any way to update drivers without make my laptop blow up?
