Windows 8.1 Automatic Update - Lenovo Z585 Turns On But Black Screen
Feb 17, 2014I have a Lenovo Z585 and it seems to be stuck in the early stage of boot up. When powered up the Cap sensor buttons flash every second and the caps lock indicator flashes every other second. The problems seemed to occur after windows 8.1 automatic update. I have tried battery and power lead out, pressing power power on for 30 sec but it did not work.

Sep 15, 2014I am using Windows 8 on my laptop. If I connect my laptop to a video projector and left it idle for about 4 minutes, the screen turns black. So I am trying to avoid this. Here is what I did so far.
First I found that for Windows 8, the option of presentation setting is not available in Control panel -> Windows Mobility Center (Fig. 1).
Next I looked for the screen saver and found that I have not activated it at all. Also the (Fig. 2)
Next I tried to Change the power setting by going to Control panel -> Change power setting -> Change when to turn off the display and set all of the as Never (Fig. 3)
I still got the black screen after doing these. Finally I noticed that after I left my laptop idle for about 4 minutes, it says "maintenance is in progress" in the "Action center". After searching through web, I found that an easy way to stop this maintenance during my presentation. I disconnected from the wireless internet temporary when giving a presentation. I tested this and after disconnecting from internet there will be no "maintenance is in progress".
However, the screen still turns black during presentation, even after disconnecting from the internet.

May 20, 2013So I had to reinstall Windows 8 on my PC, and as usual i install Drivers and such first. Normally it worked, now after i restart the Computer to finish the Driver Updates, i get Black Screen after Windows 8 loading Screen.

Nov 14, 2013I recently update my Dell Inspiron 15r with an inbuilt ATi Radeon HD 8730M to Windows 8.1. Unfortunately, after the update only the Intel HD card worked. I re-installed the drivers from the Dell website but they did little to solve the problem except fix CCC. Games such as Assassin's Creed Revelations which used to run at 60fps at maxed out settings now stutter at medium to low. I bought this laptop because of its dedicated card and it is a shame it is not working. I have the Windows 8 re-install disk supplied by Dell but I would like to fix this problem rather than shy away from it.

Mar 1, 2014My computer is hp envy dv6 7280sf notebook with 2 GPUs intel graphics HD 4000 and Nvidia Gefoce 630 M running windows 8 64x.
After making an free upgrade online for windows 8.1 which run successfully, both gpus were ok...
But after receiving a windows update with new drivers for intel graphics 4000 gpu , after install and restart , the computer freezes on blank black screen at windows startup with no mouse or anything only backlight.
So safemode was succeful but i figured that the update for windos update was the cause and graphics drivers were installed so i removed the drivers for intel graphics and itried to reboot the computer so the restart was succeful but the intel graphics card was unistalled and no drivers were automatically installed so i tried to download and install the drivers from hp and intel website for windows 8.1 however the install fails.
Automatic install from device manager failed both online and from computer and even from manual driver selection.
So therefore the install failed in safe mode , and the high def audio device ( on screen audio possibly) failed and the device was not recongnized (no drivers installed) so i'm stuck without anydrivers for the integrated gpu and the games are no longer able to run normally even if the nvidia card is on.
I tried downloading an installing Windows 8 drives but it failed to install also , for instance any new install of drovers seems to fail for me even for external usb hard drive.

Jun 2, 2013For last couple days I've been going through a minor computer issue. I wasn't doing anything special, I just turned the computer off. And the next day the problem occured; After bios and Windows 8 loading screen ( the little dots going round, just below the windows 8 icon ) my screen goes black and there's no signal to the display. I've already tried formatting my hdd and installing windows 8, also tried doing Reset option, from the Windows 8 troubleshot system. I can't access my Safe Mode, because it tells that Windows can't finish the installation in safe mode ( After installing the new system I format all the data and it goes just fine until the windows icon and "Preparin your devices" sign. It goes 100% and gets black again.

Apr 29, 2014I windows 8.1 installed an update on its own and when it restarted I can see only a black screen with a cursor flashin time to time, and I get black screen in safe mode as well ..here is what a tried and didn't work :
-safe mode(giving black screen too)
-Restore point(saying impossible to restore)
-fix with a windows 8 cd (some error )
-running cmd through the recovery tools and tried different commands but nothing worked (sfc/scannow, bcdedit /delete value safeboot)
-run through vga card too but same probleme,

Everytime i use any theme patcher on win 8 x64 it works fine until i do windows updates then it restarts ant the screen just blinks and its completely black after boot screen.

Dec 22, 2013My computer randomly shutdowns when I use it for a while maybe 2hrs or 3, reboots by itselfs and windows cannot boot back, getting a black screen and nothing happens, So i manually turn it off and turn it on again to make it work. Sometimes it doesn't even want to work, black screen after multiple reboots So i need to syster restore it, sometimes that also doesn't work and i need to reset it completely.
At first i thought it was the new drivers i installed for my nvidea geforce gt640, the 331 version. I heard it was making pcs crash like mine does, so i downgraded the driver to 306 and it works for longer but the crash happened once again after a while, and after a windows 8 reset (deleted everything and reinstalled by itself). So this is a fresh Windows 8 i believe but still does crash.
After the crash that happened tonight, i restarted my pc and realised one of my fan in my pc is going extremely fast at random times but not for long. I went closer to hear which one was doing that and it seems to be the fan on my video card, I also touched my card and its very HOTTTTTT close to burning my hand ".".
My pc has been cleaned yesterday by my step dad, had lots of dust, even in the video cards fan, but now is clean and still overheating. Using a 350W PS which i heard is not really good and that i should upgrade really soon.
CPU Temp is fine, all fans are working properly, I believe my video card is broken or my PS not giving it enough power or something?
The auto reboots are annoying, making me have to restore every time and sometimes reset Windows 8. It seems to only happen when i do lots of stuff at once like mixing via audacity and having x2 perfect world clients up, plus radio streaming live.

Updates :: Latest Windows 8.1 Update - After Login Black Screen Only
May 19, 2014Yesterday I installed an update for Win 8.1 (It was around 90 some mb) after I login I only get a black screen with a useless white cursor. Screensaver works fine, when I do a CNTRL/SHIFT/ESC the task manager box pops up for a few seconds and disappears. I was able to create another user account and everything works fine, but I need to get my first account working properly ASAP.

Feb 14, 2013I installed an EVGA GT630 1GB but it doenst work properly with Windows 8 Pro x64. All I have is a black screen, but the computer isnt freezing, 'cos I can hear the logon and shutdown sounds. I've tested it on Server 2003 R2 x64 (XPDM) and it worked just fine.
I got noyhing from nVidia forums...
May it be a problem with WDDM (defective card)?

Apr 13, 2014My little brother has an 8.1 laptop, and from what I understand, when it prompted him for updates he clicked to restart. Now when the laptop tries to restart he sees his manufacturer logo and the Windows 8 loading circle, but after this the monitor goes black and stays that way. At some point a bluescreen pops up, says something about fixing the PC, goes to 100% after 5 minutes, restarts the PC, and the PC goes back to the manufacturer logo to start the loop again.

Jun 27, 2013i installed windows 8 on my new pc who includes Shappire 7870 xt boost and monitor Samsung T220. whether i turned off the monitor manually or it turns off automatic by power saver, sometimes the monitor shows only black screen. The monitor does turns on, it's light turn on, but all i get is black screen.
i also have I5 4570 and Gigabyte GA-B85M-D3H.after i installed windows, i installed the motherboard drivers, includes Intel HD Graphics 4600. Could it conflicts with the ATI's driver?
also, when i connect the monitor to the motherboard it works fine (so far at least). but games doesn't run smoothly.
Setup Installation :: Just A Black Screen And Cursor After 8.1 Update
Oct 18, 2013I just installed 8.1 on my Samsung Series 7 Chronos laptop and it's now unusable. All I get after a reboot now is a blank screen and a vanishing cursor. I can't do CTRL+ALT+DEL or any other button combination. I also can't seem to be able to do a system restore as a restore point doesn't seem to exist for some odd reason. I've also tried the boot into low res mode but I get the same result. The only thing that seems to work is booting into Safe Mode with Networking but that doesn't allow me to install/uninstall anything so it's pretty much useless.

Jun 5, 2014I will try to post a dump file the next chance I have in getting into safe mode. I have an Asus CM6870-CA010S with the NVIDIA GeForce GT 640 card. It has been running like a dream since I got it in April, then I performed the 8.1 update, and innocently updated the drivers. Bad plan. For the past week I've fallen into the labyrinth of uninstalling the card, subsequent iterations of the drivers, clearing registries, performed the "Refresh," all after reading the forums here, on Nvidia's boards, anywhere I can get logical info.
I finally found what I thought was the perfect recipe, uninstalling totally in safe mode, deleting the folders orphaned from uninstalls, cleaning the registry, disabling Window's automatic downloads for drivers and hardware... etc. I had solid uptime for an hour, and I'm not a gamer, and hadn't yet tested my main objectives- Photoshop and Premiere. But HD video was great, and I finally thought I had it licked. Then, black screen. I have no BSODs. The system seems to shut down so fast that it doesn't have time to make dump files, and WhoCrashed.exe keeps pointing to nvlddmkm.sys as the culprit when a dump is made, with either pagefile or IRQL not less or equal errors. I'm so done.
After trying virtually every solid recommendation I can find, I'm about to throw in the towel and either get a whole other brand of graphics card, or take it to the super expensive judgmental hipster repair shop. This post is my last hope, and I'll try to get a dump file the next chance it gives me enough uptime to collect one- and getting into Safe Mode with F8 is seemingly very random.

My internal multi card reader has been working fine for just under a year but just recently it has stopped recognising SD cards. When I insert a card it normally opens an explorer window but now it does nothing and does not show in file explorer.
Though if I click on .. file explorer/manage/disk management .. it then opens an explorer window for the card.
I have the setting in autoplay - memory card and removable drive set to open explorer.
I don't think the card reader is becoming faulty.
8.1 Update - Won't Boot Past BIOS / All Recovery Media Black Screen With Mouse
Jun 2, 2014I tried updating to Windows 8.1 Update 1 and in didn't go through properly (it hard froze and crashed) and now won't boot past the BIOS. I cannot get into Windows and I cannot get into the Recovery Menu.
I tried recovery USB's and any I create either from a 3rd party or Windows itself results in loading to a black screen with a mouse cursor. Only one worked, Acronis (probably because its Linux) and it showed all the drives ruling out a hardware issue but sadly it cannot repair Windows.
So it seems I might be a victim of the black screen issue some had when moving to Update 1.... BUT the difference is I cannot boot into the recovery menu at all and any recovery media boots to a black screen.
How to get out of this screen and actually boot into anything which will allow me to try to fix the MBR or go back to a restore point.
I thought the point of recovery software was that it loads no matter how corrupted Windows is... obviously not! Something is stopping all of them booting properly.

I always keep Windows update to automatic windows update installation mode. But if I reboot my laptop or shutdown it, then the update turns to "Never check for updates" mode. Dec 4, 2013Trying to address a different problem, Gigabyte suggested that I update the BIOS on my GA-F2A88X-D3H mb from F1 to F3. In addition to not solving the problem, after I updated the image displayed on my monitor--Dell 2209 WA--doesn't fill the screen. Everything's there, but the image stops about 3.5" short of the right bezel.
Using AMD's Catalyst Control Center hasn't worked. I've read some posts about a similar--the same?--issue that suggest changing a setting in "My Flat Panel Display." But I see only "My VGA Display," with no option for over- or under-scanning.
The image does display fully on rebooting--I see the Gigabyte UltraDurable logo, and on entering BIOS instead of going into Windows 8.1 (64-bit).
Since first writing this, I've tried the monitor's menu and other buttons without success.
Is it worth getting a DVI-D to DVI-D cable to connect digitally, in place of the current VGA connection?
Does it signify that the monitor reports a screen resolution exceeding its supposed maximum of 1680 x 1050, namely, 1920 x 1080? In both Windows screen resolution and AMD CCC, I'm unable to set a resolution above 1680 x 1050, and setting lower resolutions doesn't work.

Since then I have had random black screen issues. At one point I reinstalled the OS, and they still occur. You may notice the R9 270 needs a 450W power supply at the least.
At first look you would think this is the problem, but it's not. Before the R9 270 I had an EVGA 750 Ti, which only uses like 60 watts of power or something, as well as a CM430W power supply, and the black screen issues still occurred.
First I returned the power supply for a CS450M, black screen still occurred. Then I returned the 750Ti for an r9 270, and the issue still occurs.
If it's not the graphics card, power supply, or OS, what should I do?
The dump file is attached. It blames NTOSKRNL.EXE, but I have no clue what this is or how to fix it.

Oct 20, 2013Running win 8 and installed Windows 8.1 and device manager told me windows shut down my video card (560 Ti) because of a problem and began running default drivers. I tried everything from removing and reinstalling drivers, reseating the video card, changing slots, etc....
As soon as I reverted back to Windows 8, EVERYTHING ran as fine as before.
