Graphic Cards :: Windows 8.1 Breaks Video Card?
Oct 20, 2013
Running win 8 and installed Windows 8.1 and device manager told me windows shut down my video card (560 Ti) because of a problem and began running default drivers. I tried everything from removing and reinstalling drivers, reseating the video card, changing slots, etc....
As soon as I reverted back to Windows 8, EVERYTHING ran as fine as before.
SPECS:
AMD FX-9370
32gb G skill
ASUS M5A99X EVO
Windows 8

I got a new video card, namely the Sapphire Vapor-X R9 280X to replace my old (broken) video card, namely the Sapphire Radeon HD 7970 Boost.
The problem is that I get no video signal when linking my new video card. The vga-led on motherboard turns on red (normally never) .
I thought my motherboard is broken, but then I tried the video card (Radeon HD 6950) from my brother and he just shows video signal. (vga-led turns not on red this time on motherboard) .
I would also say that on the box of my new video card is a 750 watt power supply recommended, but I only have a 600 watt power supply build in my pc.

I am having is my Windows 8 x64 has tons of artifacts and the mouse leaves trails that's even if it lets me into windows... however when I use the same setup on my Windows 8 x86 there are no artifacts...oh and same on Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I am aware that there are still some known issues with Nvidia Chips on x64 versions of Windows 8.
Example 1
Example 2
I have tried several different things and nothing has worked so far...

I'm building a system for cryptocoin mining, and am having a little problem with getting Windows 8.1 (home, not pro) to run the 3rd card (GPU) My equipment is:
Gigabyte 990 FXA UD3 MOBO
AMD Vishera CPU
2x4 gig Corsair Ram
3x Sapphire r9 280x Video cards
1000w Corsair PSU
Scandisk SSD
All parts are brand new.
Here is the problem... everything boots just fine and runs with 2 of the GPU's installed. I have the latest AMD 13.12 drivers, and the AMD APP SKD installed. When I add the 3rd GPU though, windows will auto detect it as a Radeon 7900 with the caution sign, AND/OR a r9 200 series card, also with the caution sign, most times BOTH. Then it randomly freezes the system. A couple of times I got it to run long enough just by luck I guess, to install the 13.12 drivers on the 3rd GPU, but then in a few minuites the system would freeze again.
2 GPU's run just fine, the problem only shows up when the 3rd card is installed, and it happens on any of the 4 16x slots, or both 1x slots on the MOBO. It doesn't matter if the GPU's are directly on the MOBO, or on 1x16 risers. There are plenty of folks running this set up with up to 6 GPU's, so I know it can be done, but I must be missing something somewhere in the windows set up.

I've got a bit of a strange issue that I haven't had with previous OSes on this PC. I'm running a Dell OptiPlex 380 with Win 8 x64 at the office and I have to run 2 video cards for all of my screens. I have a GeForce 8400GS in the PCI-E slot and a GeForce 6200 in the PCI slot.
Previous to the Win 8 install, it worked fine. Booted exactly as I had shut it off. Now, with 8 - it's killing my PCI-E card presumably when it puts the screens to sleep when I leave for the day. So I'm coming in to all of my windows being moved to the PCI card's monitor (only one hooked to it) and I have to reboot to get PCI-E card to come back.
If I check the screen properties, I see only the screen hooked to the PCI card. I've changed the setting in the BIOS for the first video card to Auto and also tried the PCI-E selection and it's the same either way.
Why on earth would it default to the PCI card rather than the PCI-E card?

I recently update my Dell Inspiron 15r with an inbuilt ATi Radeon HD 8730M to Windows 8.1. Unfortunately, after the update only the Intel HD card worked. I re-installed the drivers from the Dell website but they did little to solve the problem except fix CCC. Games such as Assassin's Creed Revelations which used to run at 60fps at maxed out settings now stutter at medium to low. I bought this laptop because of its dedicated card and it is a shame it is not working. I have the Windows 8 re-install disk supplied by Dell but I would like to fix this problem rather than shy away from it.

I have a AMD 5650 that shows a black bar that is 1 inch on the left and right and about .5 inches on the bottom on HDMI. I've used the drivers that Microsoft provided and also beta drivers from AMD from Febuary 2014, nothing seems to work. I've taken a picture, I've underlined where the back bars are in red.

So I recently bought a new computer. I was using the GTS 450 on the old one no problem not even a month ago. I have attempted to install it on my new pc. Switched out to a Thermaltake TR2 600W PSU which is operating just fine. I placed the video card into the primary pci slot and powered it with the 6-pin connector. Put everything back together and started her up. PC turns on fine, with even the fan going on the video card. But no video output. I'm stuck. What can I do? The drivers won't install themselves without the hardware.

Today our Windows 8.1 system stopped and crashed when watching a video on the internet. The system was not able to restart and the screen has green lines. Please see some photo's. Once I got a message (of which I did not make a photo) about error video ftr or something like that. Cannot refresh installation since I have no Windows 8/Windows 8.1 dvd. It was a download from MS (image) and upgrade to Windows 8.1 When I start windows normally webcam light flashes and HD light flashes but screen remains black.
What steps to take? I cannot see the logfile since I cannot connect to the PC from my iMac anymore.

After certain update of my graphics card driver I no longer have a video playback on my video players (including WMP), besides VLC. All the other video player are just able to play the sound of the video file, Nut not the video (the screen just stays black). The thing is that I didn't have this problem previously,, all my video players were able to play all the same video files, which they can't now!
I have the latest AMD Radeon HD video drivers installed. As I mentioned I didn't have this problem before,, with a previous versions of the AMD graphics card driver. This happened to my laptop a while ago already,, Since I have this problem I updated my video drivers 5 or 6 times at least, and no change so far !!!
As I mentioned I have the problem for some time already, during this time I re-installed my Windows couple of times, plus I even changed the version of the windows (7 to 8), for the moment I have the last version of video driver installed, I haven't installed ANY codecs.
I can probably find out from which update of a graphic card driver it started to happen and install the previous version, but I don't wanna miss out on the benefits of the driver updates, since I can still play normally videos on VLC (Only! cuz its probably have integrated codecs?!)
All the other graphic card related tasks are perfectly normal, I play games and so on.

I'm not sure if this problem is with the GPU, but I think it might be a good place to start.
Up until recently, I was running Windows 8.1 on a custom build with the following: Athlon II X4 610E processor, Silverstone NT01-E cooler, MSI 890-GX MoBo, 4GB OCZ DDR3/1333 RAM, Zotac GeForce GT 240 GPU, AuzenTech X-Fi Home Theater Sound Card, Western Digital 2TB Caviar Green, Corsair GT 120 SSD, Samsung SH-B083 ODD, and Silverstone NightJar ST40F PSU.
With this build I noticed that there was a certain tendency for the screen to "flicker" when the video changed (ie, starting a Netflix video, a Hulu video, movie on WMC, etc). It generally occurs at the start of a video and it's conclusion, being most annoying on Hulu because it does this at the start of a segment, just before the commercial break, and during the commercials.
Since I'm transitioning to gaming on my PC, I replaced several components, upgrading to a EVGA GeForce GTX 770 DUAL SuperClocked GPU, Intel Core i5-4570 processor (stock cooler), CORSAIR Vengeance LP 16GB (2 x 8GB) RAM, ASUS Q87M-E LGA 1150 MoBo, and CORSAIR CX series CX600 600W PSU. I also reinstalled Windows 8.1.
I had hoped that this would clear up my issue as a side benefit, but that is not the case. In fact, in some instances it's frequency has increased, mostly only occurring at the times I've come to expect, but I was watching a Hulu video just a few minutes ago and the number of times the screen flickered was nearly unbearable.

My new Acer laptop has very disappointing screen and video quality. The screen resolution is maxed-out at 1366 x 768 with Intel HD Graphics 4000. Those specs should be just fine for great visuals. My old desktop didn't come close to that but I could watch Youtube videos very well with no pixeling of image. Acer tech support said "new graphics driver download" and I did that , to no avail. Setting adjustments etc.? My wife's 3 year old Acer has better screen quality than my new one.

My system is a Windows 8 x64 Pro with Boot Camp 5 running on a 2011 Macbook Pro. I'm experiencing Windows crashes and distorted screen images with artifacts (see attachment #1) almost every time I start programs that require heavy video-processing (e.g.: games). The problem also happens, even if rarely, at random without doing anything particular.
This is what is shown in the debug trace of MEMORY.DMP:

As you see, it really looks like a video card problem related to atikmpag.sys. I think in cases like this the first thing to try is updating the drivers but unfortunately, since I'm running Windows on Boot Camp, it looks like there aren't suitable drivers apart from the ones I'm already using. I tried to install the ATI CCC 12.8 beta 2 (that is the only thing that I can run) that seem to suit my system, but that didn't work.
I have been suggested to look into the power settings of the video card (because they may lead to system instability), and specifically I tried playing a bit with the AMD PowerPlay - Technology in the CCC. Anyway, when I open the tab, the lists show up as blank and there is really no option I can work on (see attachment #2). It looks like my video card doesn't support this feature, even if I think it definitely should like it says in the AMD page: AMD PowerPlay.

I have a very serious issue with my brand new Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 GT 650M SLI system (specs at the bottom) . I can't play games at all because my system will lock up as soon as I enter the game, requiring a hard reset. My Windows Action Center is filled with Video Hardware Error reports. Is this because of a bad video card or is it a driver/software issue? I am on a clean install of Windows 8 Pro and have already tried the 314.22 WHQL and 320.00 BETA drivers. Nothing is overclocked.

I am having a serious problem with minecraft. No matter what version of minecraft I use or what graphics driver I use I always get this error on win 8.1. Not on 7, only 8. : Bad video card drivers!
Minecraft was unable to start because it failed to find an accelerated OpenGL mode. This can usually be fixed by updating the video card drivers.

My computer is hp envy dv6 7280sf notebook with 2 GPUs intel graphics HD 4000 and Nvidia Gefoce 630 M running windows 8 64x.
After making an free upgrade online for windows 8.1 which run successfully, both gpus were ok...
But after receiving a windows update with new drivers for intel graphics 4000 gpu , after install and restart , the computer freezes on blank black screen at windows startup with no mouse or anything only backlight.
So safemode was succeful but i figured that the update for windos update was the cause and graphics drivers were installed so i removed the drivers for intel graphics and itried to reboot the computer so the restart was succeful but the intel graphics card was unistalled and no drivers were automatically installed so i tried to download and install the drivers from hp and intel website for windows 8.1 however the install fails.
Automatic install from device manager failed both online and from computer and even from manual driver selection.
So therefore the install failed in safe mode , and the high def audio device ( on screen audio possibly) failed and the device was not recongnized (no drivers installed) so i'm stuck without anydrivers for the integrated gpu and the games are no longer able to run normally even if the nvidia card is on.
I tried downloading an installing Windows 8 drives but it failed to install also , for instance any new install of drovers seems to fail for me even for external usb hard drive.

I have attached as requested the archive containing the SF Diagnostic Tool v5 dumps.
I am receiving a huge number of BSOD errors, after each one the nVidia graphics card is nowhere to be found, rebooting the system does not work, in order to bring the nVidia card back I need to shutdown and power on the system, 2 attempts are required, first power on attempt always fails and the system shuts down right after the bios logo.
The video card was recently changed to a brand new one.

I installed windows 8 pro 64bit a few weeks ago and after that i had problems with my graphic card (amd 7850)
I tried the latest stable and the latest beta driver, but it's the same failure anyway. I can use my computer without problems, video games works too.
But if i watch a video on youtube, i got display errors and i must restart my computer with the reset key in normal desktop mode the card works on 300mhz, at the beginning of a youtube video it turns up to 450mhz and works. but if the video is over and the card turns back to 300mhz, it looks like the driver crashes (windows event log error:
The driver DriverWudfRd failed to load for the device
