Windows 8 Has Erased Apps / Files And Configuration Of HP Laptop?

May 8, 2014

I bought 2 years ago an HP 2000 NOTEBOOK PC, it came with windows 8 and when i turned it on today it was like new, there-s nothing left, except some programs in my desktop, but they are like new (example: when i opened word it asked my named)

Everything is like if i have never used it before, and I couldn't find any of my documents. I remember this happened like a year ago, but restarting it all came back to normality, but now it wont fix doing that

Any way to find my docx. by using the search options, and i have found them my docx. files, but i cant find a way to integrate them again to my system because if i search them from a windows folder i cant find any of them in my documents or my pictures, so this are my questions:

1) is there a way to put back my configuration, files, apps and everything as it was or i have to manually insert my documents in my system and forget my apps and configurations?

2) i read that i can use restore point and this wont affect my files, but if it goes wrong (the restore point option) is there a danger that i lost the opportunity to fix all my files and configuration? (I am asking this because i wont risk my work doing something that it might not be able to change). doing this restore point will be the solution to my problem or is this used for other typo of problems different than mine?

3) what do you think is the problem or the reason that this happens? I am worried that this has happened before and that it might happen again and as is very important to me i would want to prevent it.

Apps / Software :: Windows Store Configuration Possible?

Is it possible to configure Windows Store so it'll only show free apps or showing without the picture? My internet connection is not that fast and every time I tried to browse, it takes few seconds to load up a page, if I can just display types of apps (free, etc.) or list apps (without icon/picture), it'll speed up the loading time, but I can't find anywhere to configure this.

Tech Support Erased All Backup Partitions?

I have a brand new Asus laptop that had a problem with the battery. I sent it in to Asus on an RMA and when I got it back, the only partition on the laptop was the OS. Is there something I can do so I can re-install the OS some day? I thought if I can get my activation code some way, I could download Win 8 and re-install, but I am not sure if that will even work with Windows 8.

Transfer User Files To New Windows 8 Laptop?

Mar 23, 2013

I was working on a windows 8 laptop and wanted to transfer user files to the new laptop. I pulled the drive from the Windows 8 laptop, plugged it into an open sata port on my windows 7 bench machine (which already contained the files to be transferred) and booted without problem. I assigned the windows 8 drive a letter and opened the drive. All the files of the Windows 8 drive were visible. I opened a directory off of the root, created a new directory and copied the files. No problem. I opened some of the image files and all looked well. I shut down the win7 box, pulled the Windows 8 drive and put it back in the laptop and it booted, no problem.

When I went looking for the files, they were no where to be found! Win 8 showed the "used space" as if the copy never happened. Thinking I made an error on the copy I shut down the Windows 8 laptop and pulled the drive, plugged it back into the win7 box and booted. The win7 boot detected "file corruption" on the volume in question and did some "orphan" recovering and a bunch of other stuff. When it finally finished and booted all the files copied were in a "found.000" directory. I took ownership and repeated. Funny thing is that while the win7 showed the drive with the expected 40gb of data taking up space, the windows 8 showed the "used space" as if the data wasnt even there? why as I try to copy the files from the win7 drive converted to a usb external directly into the Windows 8 laptop.

Windows 8.1 Laptop - OK To Keep User Files On External USB Drive?

Sep 15, 2014

I plan to get a new Windows 8.1 laptop soon. I want it to have 8gb RAM and an internal 128gb SSD drive where I keep all the OS, driver and other system files. Then I want all my media files (documents, music, vids, etc) on an external USB 3.0 hard drive. I recognize that keeping files on an external drive may cause slow behavior in some situations. My my guess is that USB 3.0 is fast enough so this won't be a problem in most situations. And I plan to get an external drive that has USB 3.0.

I'm not a power user. I don't edit video or do fancy rendering or stuff like that. I just browse the net, create some docs and spreadsheets, listen to some music and watch some vids. I play around with Audacity once in a while and that's about it. I'm an average user.

So, any problems with keeping all my user files on an external drive?

I got an HP laptop last year pre-installed with Windows 8 and I want to install a new HDD. How do I go about doing this and not losing any files? However, I am unable to access my PC files from my laptop(see screenshot below)

It just blocks me out - I can't open it.

I'm absolutely positive all the settings match. I've tried to create the homegroup on both my laptop and my computer, but have got the same result.

Network / Sharing :: Can Delete Skydrive Duplicate Files In Laptop

Jun 29, 2013

I use SkyDrive as my cloud storage and have 5GB of files in it.

But I want it to be IN THE CLOUD and hidden, not accesible to everyone using my laptop and not duplicate copies of the files in my hard disk (actually triplicate copies).

For example, let's say my 3GB music collection. I keep a copy in my hard disk within "My Music", a copy in the cloud in Skydrive, but now I have a third copy in my hard disk within the Skydrive folder, which I didn't want and I wasn't asked about.

Microsoft assumed I want this third copy for some reason and downloaded everything automatically to this Skydrive folder. Great.

So, the first thing I do is uninstalling Skydrive, if I want to upload something I do it via browser, but the folder and copy of my files is still there.

My question is, can I delete those files, my music collection and so on without deleting at the same time the copy in the cloud? I mean, if I delete them here they will be deleted in the cloud too?

Hardware Drivers :: Laptop Freezes When Transferring Files Between Partitions

Jul 12, 2014

Whenever I start moving files between partitions on my laptop (Asus K61-IC) it will start moving the file but after it has transferred part of the file the whole computer will freeze and the only thing I can do, is force a hard reset by holding down the power button.

I have tried doing an upgrade of the OS thinking it was a problem with Windows 7 but it is doing it with 8.1 also. I am about to see if it does it when transferring files to my external hard drive and if it doesn't I'm going to back everything and if anything, format the whole hard drive to one partition and then maybe it won't do it anymore.

Debugging :: Laptop Crash On Resume From Sleep - No Dump Files

Nov 2, 2013

I have a Lenovo u410 Ultrabook with an odd problem that began 3-4 months ago that I've been unable to resolve.

Whenever the laptop resumes from sleep mode it forces a complete restart and fails to create a dump file. I have verified that windows is set to create dump files and if I force a crash in some other way I will get a dump file but when it crashes when trying to resume my minidumps folder remains empty.

As far as I can tell it enters sleep mode fine and it's not until it tries to resume that the reboot is triggered. When the problem began I was on Windows 8 and since then have upgraded to 8.1 ... The laptop was able to sleep normally for the first 2-3 months I had it.

Things I have tried so far:

-Installing all the official drivers from the Lenovo support website.
- Running system file checker.
-Running the Microsoft Safety Scanner.
-Sleeping with no peripheral devices connected, tried both while running on AC and battery.
-Removing and re-seating the memory.
-Refreshing windows (I haven't tried a complete reset yet, hoping to avoid that if I can).

In event viewer I get the following error and critical event each time after it reboots:

Error: The previous system shutdown at <time> on ‎<date> was unexpected.Critical: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. There are no other warnings, errors, critical entries.

I am attaching the results of the "Grab All" in the SF Diagnostic Tool right after a reboot. Other than sleep mode not functioning the laptop appears to be running normally without any problems.

Can't Edit Files In Windows Apps Folder?

Nov 6, 2013

There was a Metro app that I installed that I liked the functionality of but didn't like the fonts for; I knew where the configuration was to change the appearance (a CSS file in the C:Program FilesWindowsApps<app name> directory),

but when I tried to modify the file, it kept giving me an "Access is denied." error without any extra information.

I tried changing the ownership of the apps folder to my own account; didn't work. Changed the ownership of that specific file, and all the other files within that folder; still not allowed. I went into the PowerShell as administrator and tried copying or renaming the file; still "Access is denied." and nothing else.

Is there a way to make this file editable, or is the access blocked on a system level? I just want to change a few fonts around, but if Microsoft is trying to prevent me from doing so in order to protect its walled garden, then I'm afraid I'm going to have to give up on Windows 8.

Upgraded To Windows 8 Pro - Cannot View Personal Files In New Apps Screen

Jan 3, 2013

I've upgraded from Windows 7 PC to Windows 8 Pro (not clean install) today and I can't now view my personal files in the new apps screen. E.g If I go into the photo app it says there are no pics available. I thought I'd lost the data but when searching around I noticed a folder had been created on the new desktop which was the same name as my PC name in Windows 7. Clicking into this folder took me to Users folder -> and my folders which contain all the music and photo files etc.

If I launch Explorer, On the left hand side of the Explorer screen (where it displays the Library docs) I am unable to select any of these or drag files to these from the folder described above. Also, when connecting my iPhone, it asks if I want to import my pics. I know all of these have already been imported but it doesn't recognise this and tries to import them all again, I assume into the new location in Windows 8.

Is this something to do with permissions. I've used my hotmail account to set up as a new Windows 8 profile and this has Admin rights. Or do I physically have to copy he data to the new location where personal library files are held in Windows 8.
