Hardware Drivers :: Laptop Freezes When Transferring Files Between Partitions
Jul 12, 2014
Whenever I start moving files between partitions on my laptop (Asus K61-IC) it will start moving the file but after it has transferred part of the file the whole computer will freeze and the only thing I can do, is force a hard reset by holding down the power button.
I have tried doing an upgrade of the OS thinking it was a problem with Windows 7 but it is doing it with 8.1 also. I am about to see if it does it when transferring files to my external hard drive and if it doesn't I'm going to back everything and if anything, format the whole hard drive to one partition and then maybe it won't do it anymore.
I am running a qnap NAS in my home network. I can connect to the NAS no issues at all, I can copy small files across the network no issues. However I want to rebuild my NAS so am performing a backup across the network. I want to copy approx 2tb in a single copy. However when I do a select all, copy and paste, it's only copies about 40gb of the data. I am running Windows 8 ...
I just bought a new computer. Dell Inspiron 3847 and would like to transfer files from old computer. Not familiar with any of this how would I do this, if the old mother board may be shot? The power still comes on so its not completely dead.
I'm planning on moving an SSD system drive from a laptop that is starting to experience difficulties to a desktop PC.
I'm retired now and my laptop never moves off my desk, so this has offered an opportunity to upgrade at little expense. My laptop is an HP Compaq Presario CQ61, dual core Pentium 4 T4300 2.1GHz with 2 x 120GB SSD drives installed.
The desktop I want to upgrade with the SSD drives is an HP DX6120 Pentium 4 HTT 3.2GHz unit that I've picked up very cheap.
I know a clean install of either Windows 7 or Windows 8 would be best practice, but is there a way I could just transfer the disk to the PC ?
I am getting a rather annoying crash occurring in Windows 8 Pro X64.
I have a new PC build and I have changed Motherboard, processor and RAM to AMD Asus Sabertooth Motherboard with 6 core AMD processor and 16 Gig of RAM. It came as a bundle from Overclockers.co.uk so all good there.
Now I disconnected my 3 drive RAID by mistake on the PC before I changed it to Windows 8 from Windows 7 and so rebuilt to new spec and rebuilt the RAID and got the data back onto my Media PC downstairs running Windows 7 Ultimate. Both computers have RAID of nearly 6 TB's. When I copied from my main PC down to the media PC both running Windows 7 I managed to copy across all data with no crashes. I just had to adjust the network so it copied faster at the giga settings and all was fine copying at just over 100 MB/S.
I have shared all folders on both networks as a Homegroup and for everyone to read & write data. Now that I am backing up from the Media PC back to the main one which now has Windows 8 Pro X64 it starts to copy folders and then will crash and reboot. It just comes up with the error windows has run into problems and collects info and reboots. I have attached the mini dump file which seems to relay that the router is the problem but I don't believe that because it does not give problems in any other way.
Do you think that it could be that the network drops out and if so what causes it?
I have a brand new laptop with Windows 8. On it, whenever I transfer some files over wireless on my home network, my internet connection becomes next to unresponsive (websites don't load or take forever to load, Skype chat window freezes during my typing and resumes after 10 seconds) until I kill the network transfer. Why is this happening?
It's like the network can only handle one thing at a time, which is strange because none of my other laptops have this problem. With other laptops (that have Windows 7) I could easily transfer files over wifi at full network cap, while listening to music over the network and browsing the internet with ease, watching Youtube in HD.
Now with this Windows 8 machine I don't have that freedom. Is this a Windows 8 issue? Perhaps I should get Windows 8.1.. The problem occurs on transfers between my Windows 8 laptop and my Windows 7 laptop.
I just bought a new Dell Inspiron 15 7537 laptop and have noticed that the hard drive has 6 partitions on it. 2 OEM partitions (one 40mb and one 8gb), 2 recovery partitions (one 490mb and one 7.8gb), 1 EFI system partition and 1 primary partition. I am unsure which one is useful and which one I can safely delete. Also, all of them except for the primary partition are 100% free (nothing on them at all!) . Also, I am unable to right click on any of the partitions besides the main one (C.
1 year ago I had a desktop PC with two HDD in it, one is 500GB,the other is 1TB. I bought the PC with only the 500GB HDD in it, but after buying the 1TB HDD, I always installed OSes in it. For many time I didn't get any problem, until I accidently swapped the plugs for the HDDs after I cleaned the cabinet. My Windows 7 wouldn't boot even though I had did "nothing". I realised my problem and just swapped it again and the problem was gone. After reading about it, I learned that it was caused because of the MBR, which was on the 500GB HDD. No problem till MY PC died and my family ran into money problem which prevented me from buying a new PC so I started using a netbook for everyday PC use. I had to trow out all my PC hardware, except for my two HDD which I kept safe in my wardrobe.
The thing is, I have all my precious music, games and stuff on those HDD, so, since I don't have the money to build a new PC, I instead bought a IDE/SATA to USB converter, which worked fine on the 500GB HDD. Problem is when I plug the 1TB HDD, which won't allow me to open the partitions (even though they show perfectly both on My Computer and on Computer Management). On Computer Management, they all show as RAW partitions, I don't know what to do. I know some programs will only recover files from they extensions, but I would like to have all my files untouched, the way they were, so I could back up important files on my netbook, and let the HDD alone waiting for the day that I can finally buy a new PC.
i have been having this problem for a week now until a friend told me about your form three of my partitions are missing from my computer and this what it shows me in the device manager
I have a HP Pavillion Sleekbook 15-b002ee with Third generation core i5 processor 1.7 GHz, 500 GB Hard disk and 4 GB of RAM installed. Windows 8 came pre installed on it.
I bought this laptop 11 months ago and it worked fine for 10 months and then from the last month its presenting unusual problems. My disk usage is stuck at 100% and the laptop freezes and never lets me work or do anything. Heres what i have already done to solve the issue but have been unsuccessful:
1) I have reset my PC completely and reinstalled windows 8 using the factory setup. Didnt solve the issue, newly installed windows displays the disk usage 100% and the performance is same i.e the system freezes.
2) I have tried adjusting my paging file, no change made a difference to the performance of my laptop. The default system managed Paging file size is something around 3.89 Gb. Does my problem have anything to do with my paging file?
3) disabling the "Windows Search" and "Superfetch" services and still it didnt solve the problem.
4) I have also run checkdisk on my hard drive completely. It took me a complete day to do so but still no change.
5) Before resetting my laptop, an error called "Kernel_data_inpage(http.sys)" used to come on my upgraded windows 8.1. Whats the issue?
So what should i do? Is there any problem with my hardware? Is my hard drive having bad sectors and is that causing the problem?
My computer started freezing while downloading large files in uTorrent, About 10 minutes after starting uTorrent the PC starts to be really really slow and 1 minute after it freezes, only restarted/shutdown solve the problem, I've been using uTorrent for years and never had this problem, I mean it happens when I download a 15GB movie, but two months ago I downloaded a 170GB TV series and no problems were with that.
So I thought maybe its a problem in the HDD (not in the space, I have aprox. 150GB free in C and 220GB in D), I don't really know what to do.
I recently set up Windows 8.1 on a new SSD (as GPT). While I'm aware that Windows automatically creates its necessary extra small partitions for recovery, I just realized that my secondary HDD which I also formatted as GPT has these extra partitions. This secondary HDD was the one shipped on my laptop that used to have Win 8 preinstalled so maybe its remnants of that.
My question is (and I hope this is the right forum to ask): Are those partitions only necessary if the said hard drive contains the OS? In other words, can I delete them since this is a secondary drive?
I am having a little trouble with windows disk management. I'm running a custom built rig with a 250GB SSD for OS & Programs, and a 2TB HDD for everything else. The hard drive was previously partitioned however I recently removed these partitions and Extended the main volume to fill the drive, however it is showing up as 3 distinct volumes in disk management (See attached screenshot). They're also Green from some reason and the disk is showing as a 'Dynamic' disk, which I don't remember changing.
I purchased a new laptop yesterday and a couple of hours after i set it up it started to constantly freeze and programs will stop responding. Windows 8 is fully up to date.
I have a Dell XPS-12 laptop. It's pretty standard, and I only use it for school. I'm a Computer Science major (which is incredibly ironic in this situation... wow), and I partitioned part of my harddrive off, about 32 GB, for a CentOS and then Kali Linux install, first to run a configuration and write some custom code for an open source captive portal my work has deployed and second for testing my place of employments security implementation (boy was it easy to gather some scary data with a simple wireshark capture..). I am extremely busy with being a fulltime student and also working 2 jobs and freelancing web development, and I haven't been able to figure out why after reformatting the partition I was using for the Linux installs, I could never reintegrate that partition into my own Windows partition. It's incredibly annoying as I only have a 128 GB SSD and after screwing with it for ten minutes, said screw it and just made it into a backup drive where I keep all my code and larger ISO images for different OS' I have (after just a year of studying CS, I've had to use a total of 6 different Linux OS', as well as messing with trying to get an ArchLinux install up and running correctly... I'm starting to feel like a collector)
why my harddrive is being super lame and finish that matrix for the Software Packaging class' final it's pretty obvious which I'm going to go with. Problem is, now, I'm starting to do a bit of freelance security consulting here and there, and I need to have a portable Kali partition with me. I also need to shrink the partition, but when I do I can never put it back into my main Windows partition so there really is no point.
Also, I'm running windows 8.0 right now, but I've had 8.1 before and the fixes still didn't work.
I just bought a new laptop - an ASUS N550JV - with a single 1TB hard drive. I specifically sought a 1TB hard drive because I intend to store a lot of photos on the laptop and already have over 600GB of photo data to store.
When I got the laptop the first thing I did was to go through the windows update process to get everything up to date, then I upgraded to Windows 8.1 (the laptop came with Windows 8), then I ran the windows update again until everything was up to date.
It was only then that I opened up file explorer with the intention of setting up a basic folder structure for the files I planned to transfer to the laptop. I was dissapointed, at that point, to discover that instead of a single 1TB C: drive, I saw a 370+ GB C: drive and a 530GB + D drive. I confirmed with system information that there is indead just a single drive, and that it thus came partitioned into 2 primary volumes (which, btw, still don't add up to 1TB BTW!). This setup really doesn't work for me, because the "larger" volume is still too small for all my photos, and it would be illogical and inconvenient to have to split up the photos so that some were on the C drive and some on the D drive.
Could I somehow merge the two partitions back into one primary drive, or at least re-size them so that the D drive had at least, say, 750GB, and shrink the C drive accordingly. He pointed me to the Disk Management utility and directed me to delete the (still empty) D drive, which would make that storage space unallocated, then extend the C drive to use that unalocated space. I was able to delete the D drive, and confirmed that there was now 530+ GB of unallocated space. However, when I click on the C drive the option to extend is greyed out.
I did a bit of Googling at this point and discovered that you can can only extend to contiguous unallocated space, and the unallocated space was NOT contiguous - there is a 350MB "Recovery Partition" between the C and D (or unallocated) spaces. In fact, there were multiple recovery and other partitions. (From left to right: 100MB "EFI System Partition", 900MB "Recovery Partition", 370+GB "Primary" C Drive with Boot etc, 350MB "Recovery Partition", 530+GB "Primary" D drive, and 20+GB "Recovery Partition").
Of course I would be too scared to delete the recovery partition, but there's no option to do so anyway ...
I asked the family member again and he suggested creating a USB Recovery Drive and, in the process, wipe the recovery partition. So used the windows utility to create a recovery drive, and sure enough, at the end it asked if I wanted to delete the recovery partition and I said yes. The good news is that this removed the 20GB partition, and I was able to extend the D drive to use that newly unallocated space. The bad news is that the 350MB recovery partition still lies between the C and D drives, preventing me from merging the two.
Again through Googling I found that there are tools I could use to force delete the recovery partition, but I'm afraid to do so and kill my computer or recovery options all together. I also heard that this 350MB recovery partition was created when I upgraded to 8.1, and that rolling back to my factory setting won't remove the partition?
So the question is, what can I do? Is there an easy way to "move" the recovery partition to the end of the drive without breaking any functionality that it might have? What would happen to my computer if this recovery partition were to "break" or get removed? Is it best that I just "live with it" the way it is despite the inconvenience?
This morning, my laptop wouldn't boot and I got a message saying I needed to use the recovery disk to fix the problem. A little investigating using the command prompt from that disk revealed my system and data partitions had no drive letter assigned to them. A little work with Diskpart fixed that but left me wondering what would have caused them to disappear.
Every now and then my mouse will freeze. If I turn off the mouse then back on it starts working again. Have this happen with Bluetooth mouse?
I have used this mouse on two different computers and both do the same thing. I'm thinking it is the mouse since it's doing it on my desktop with a Bluetooth dongle and my Asus T100 with built in Bluetooth.
Yet another Windows 8 issue. When I try to attach a file with Mail app, I get a blank screen with "Attach" and "Cancel" at the bottom right. I can't click on anything though and I can only exit the app completely. Even clicking cancel doesn't do anything.
This is not an issue about not knowing how to attach files.
My issue is that the built-in file explorer in the mail app doesn't work. It just goes blank and doesn't allow me to select anything or even show any files or folders.
I've already tried uninstalling and reinstalling. It's updated to the latest version. I even did the Metro User Interface App Troubleshooter thingy.
I am using windows 8 and from time to time the whole laptop freezes with only short moments where you can move the mouse until it freezes again.
And today I was using word and the program wouldn't let me work in it, you could see the mouse movement at the bottom of the screen only. I had to shut it down using task manager for it to work again.
on Acer Aspire Windows 8 - All the drivers I have to instal, do not include an installation program and I have to instal the drivers manually. I don't know if I am doing it right or if there is an easier way of doing it but I have to right click the downloaded Zip file for Bluetooth, extract all files, search for the Bluetooth folder in Device Manager to instal the driver. I have got six drivers (not all Bluetooth) to instal and just want it get it right. before I upgrade to Windows 8.1 again.
I have a ASUS N56VM laptop, I have upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro a few months ago (free DreamSpark account) and I can't get USB 3.0 to work at the speeds at which it needs to work. An 3GB ISO which I copy from my HDD to an USB3.0 USB-stick gets a max speed of 25 mb per second. I have already tried everything I could think of, including the following:
Upgrading Intel chipset drivers from ASUS support site (delete old, install new)Upgrading BIOSINF hack (Windows 8 and Intel USB 3.0 Host Controllers | Plugable) "Windows 8* has a native in-box USB 3.0 driver. Intel is not releasing a specific Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver for Windows 8."
The driver I have is: imgur: the simple image sharer
The only thing I can think of is maybe mailing ASUS if they can supply a new BIOS revision or mailing Intel if they can supply some new chipset drivers...
EDIT1: A few months back, when the laptop was still running Windows 7, the read/write speeds were "normal", meaning that they were what you would expect from USB 3.0.
I purchased that HP came with windows 8 installed with a product key. I recently purchased a samsung 120GB SSD and wish to install my windows 8 onto the SSD and leave the HD as just a storage drive. When I purchased the computer it came with windows 8 installed and no installation CD. How do I go about obtaining an installation CD, or do I even need one to install it onto my new SSD.
There is a game my daughter loves to play and its no longer offered in the windows 8 store, why they took it down. I sold my last tablet to a friend, the game is still installed and still works fine on that particular tablet. I granted myself ownership of the winapps folder and copied the game from the old tablet to the new tablet, I also copied all the game data from the local user account. When I try to run it it says "This application can only run in the context of an AppContainer."
How can I make this work? As a computer tech I would also like to know how to do this in case a weird similar situation comes up for a client as I always get these odd ball requests from my clients.
I bought an Asus g75vw with a preinstalled Win 8 because it was cheap, and afterinstalled an SSD to get some more OOMPH. But after a long time and lots of grief in trying to get the OS transferred to the SSD I managed to do so today due to theog and Paragon 12's clone-tools So I was happy as a clam up until a few mins ago when I discovered that the old 500 gb HDD was gone missing.
Set someone up with new Windows 8 PC. Everything has gone fine but when he plugged in his digital camera via USB and turnited it on(Canon Asomething or other) Windows makes a single tone and does nothing. Removing the cable also gives out a single tone.
I just bought an HP Envy All in 1 w Windows 8. I want to put my music from Zune player onto the computer. I downloaded Zune software, but I cant get music from Zune player to PC. I don't want to use Xbox music if possible. How I can continue using Zune on PC and more importantly put my music on PC in Zune file?
I have the disks for a number of programs I have used in the past on my computers (Windows 95 - Windows 7) I shall try to download some of these to a new HP laptop using Windows 8. What success have other users of this forum had in using old programs? Which programs were successful and which died?
