Network / Sharing :: HomeGroup - Can't Access PC Files From Laptop
Jul 31, 2013
2 days ago, I bought a laptop with Windows 8, as I wanted something more portable to carry with me.
I decided to set up a HomeGroup, so I could transfer files from my old computer with ease. However, that doesn't appear to be working.
I can connect to my laptop with my old computer(see screenshot below)
However, I am unable to access my PC files from my laptop(see screenshot below)
It just blocks me out - I can't open it.
I'm absolutely positive all the settings match. I've tried to create the homegroup on both my laptop and my computer, but have got the same result.

I have a desktop and a laptop both running Windows 8 and are both members of the homegroup. In File explorer both machines can see the other in the homegroup but when I double click I get a message (on either machine) "This PC is currently unavailable". This has only been a problem since using 8. When I was all windows 7 the homegroup worked perfectly. Both machines have been set up to share everything including the kitchen sink. I must have a setting wrong somewhere. This used to be an intermittent thing. When I had my old desktop (also windows 8) other homegroup machines could occasionally see the desktop but sometimes not!! I have a BT router that on an individual basis works fine. All machines are using the wi fi on the router.

I have a big problem in homegroup configuration. To Clarify this is my set up:
Router is in the living room.
Computer PC 1 connected via ethernet cable in the living room.
Computer loptop 2 in bed room connected via wireless.
When computer 2 is connected via ethernet cable to router, homegroup is working and every thing is ok. but when use WiFi, I can't access to shared files.
Both PC and loptop have win 8.1 enterprise OS.

I have a Desktop and a Laptop, both wirelessly connected to a router, and part of a HomeGroup. Sharing over HomeGroup works like a breeze. Occasionally I need to copy something large between the 2, so I connect an Ethernet cable.
To actually transfer the files, currently I have to : disconnect wifi from both, else step 3 won't work assign 192.0.0.0/24 addresses to each of them, setting no gateway try to browse the network, upon which I can force the conversion of network type to private upon which I might still have to manually type in the IP address in UNC format (192.168.1.3)I have to authenticate as my user account on the other machine. Then I have to share the required folders... Sometimes "pulling" the files doesn't work, upon which I have to assign write permissions onto a folder on the destination computer and "push" the files. Ugliest thing I have encountered.
I hate this process with a passion, because I have to do it every time. I have no clue how or why Windows decides a particular network to be "Identified" or "Unidentified". I would like some way of forcing Windows to treat all PC-to-PC connections as private (this arrangement is obviously VERY private, about as private as it gets), so that sharing is enabled, and so that it is recognized as a part of the HomeGroup, and then if I change the order of preference to Ethernet > WiFi, I should be able to have it automatically transfer over WiFi+Ethernet, just WiFi, or just Ethernet depending on which link is up....

I am struggling with my windows 8.1 and the network settings for the last 2 months. However, I still can not access my shared files from my lan network. There is always a login username/password requested in order to join but It never let me join and see the files. If I input any random wrong login username/password it reports an error. Hence, for some reason the authentication part is successful and something else is wrong. This is maybe a windows 8.1 problem on some restrictions etc.
Actions done till now... Change permissions - added almost everything (users, guests, user, administrator, everyone) set workgroup to name "domain" or "WORKGROUP" or "HOME" homegroup only works for windows7!! Remove the password request check from the network settings
Shared files included in Windows 8.1 Trying to access the files from windows xp, windows 7, linux, android, tv media box...
I will probably add some screenshots soon..

I'm trying to allow my win xp desktop pc to be able to access the hard disk on my win 8 laptop.
I put them in the same workgroup and then map the laptop's disk on the desktop pc. I can now see the laptop's disk in "network drives" in the xp but when I try to open it, I get an error message that I am not allowed to access it.
So, back at windows 8, I go to my disk Properties, Security tab and try to Add permissions for the winxp pc, which is what I think I'm supposed to do to solve my problem. However, at the "Select Users or Groups" window, I click on Locations and the only thing that appears is the Windows 8 laptop. Isn't the desktop pc supposed to be appearing over there as well? I can't add permissions for a pc that doesn't exist in Locations.

I'm having a pretty major issue with Skydrive on Windows 8.1. A vast majority of my files are unopenable from Explorer (or the Modern UI app which seems to just open them through explorer in the end anyway). When I try to open one of these files, I receive an error message titled "1 Interrupted Action" and displaying the message:
An unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search to solve this problem.
Error 0x80040A41: No error description available
I have yet to find anything even resembling a solution when I search for that error code. The options this error window gives me is to "Try Again" which presents a typical explorer progress bar that never goes anywhere or to "skip" or "cancel" which do the same thing. Essentially this means that I have to use the skydrive web client to download the file to some other location locally and then edit and reupload from there. As far as I can tell there also isn't a traceable logic to what files are going to be accessible and which ones are not. I could literally be just finished working on a file, save it, and have it inaccessible when I try to reopen it. This error has not improved or changed at all by my making any files "available offline" or "available online-only" (in fact clicking those options doesn't seem to actually change their Availability that is listed in explorer).
I've used Skydrive for a few years now (since the beta I believe) as my primary cloud storage service, I pay for Office 365, and therefore I have access to a larger amount of storage on Skydrive than I do on other cloud services. I'm using Google Drive temporarily, but its incredibly inconvenient given how invested and reliant I've become to Skydrive.
Any way of resetting or jarring Skydrive on 8.1?

My new laptop that runs the despicable OS, Windows 8. I'm the ONLY user, the owner AND Administrator of my laptop, but I'm denied access to my own files!! I'm only a casual user, meaning I use my PC for "fun stuff"...i.e. writing & reading emails; playing games & searching the internet for things that interest me. I don't have anything on my PC that has to be "guarded" from others, as NO ONE ELSE uses my PC. That said, I should be able to access EVERYTHING on my PC, but the paranoid screwballs at Micro$oft have set up the most confounding OS, & I'm repeatedly denied accessing things like: Program Files, Pictures (even though I'm the one who put them there!!), Properties, etc. etc.
I know I'm not the only one who's been confronted with these problems, as I've read the same things repeated on sites in the many places I've visited in my attempt to figure out how to break the chains that Micro$oft has put on MY PC. How to change the settings so I can access my own stuff? I don't understand why MY computer is given the authority to DENY ME access to stuff I entered myself. When I couldn't view my OWN Pictures, (that I put here!!!), How I can use my own PC the way I want to...like the "good old days" of XP & even Vista HP?

Ive been using a method to access my Skydrive files in explorer without the need for the Skydrive app. The process is explained here: How To Map SkyDrive Folder As Network Drive In Windows 8 And RT .
It works great on 1 pc I use but on another it doesn't. The problem is it is only showing the Public folder and nothing else. I cant work out why this is the case.
It accepts my credentials fine and connects the drive it just doesn't show the files there. It also doesn't allow me to upload anything else to the drive.

Everything I can find to get round this problem involves right clicking on the HD->properties->Security->Owner and then going on to changing a few settings.
There is no owner tab! Is this an 8.1 thing? Have they removed it? Van I get it back?

I'm running Windows 8, (unfortunately), & I can't access certain files even though I'm the only one who uses this laptop & I'm also the Administrator. I tried numerous times to allow file sharing & change what I thought I should, but I kept getting red-lettered statements saying that I'm not allowed to make such changes.what steps to take so I can get to the files I need. There's no reason why I should be denied access to do anything when it's my own computer!

Alright, so I just recently got a new computer that has Windows 8.1, compared to my old one having Windows 7. I tried to transfer all of the files/folders over to the new one over the network and everything worked just fine. However, whenever I tried to modify any of the files that were transferred from the old one such as a png or txt file and overwrite the original through the program, I was always given an error box that said "access denied."
I'm pretty sure this is meaning that I need to get administrator privileges from the old PC, but I'm not sure how I would do that. My only option is to save the version to another folder then move it to where the original one was.

On my home network, I have my desktop, my HTPC (wired) and my wife's laptop (Wifi). The desktop and HTPC are bth running Win 8 pro. The laptop is running Win 7. All are 64 it.
Invariably I try to log onto my HTPC from my desktop and it says that I am unable to access the files. I then open up network and sharing center to check on the network password only to find that is has changed itself somehow. Even after I reset the password on both the HTPC and the desktop. I still cannot access my shared files on the HTPC from the desktop. The only way to share files is to get them from the HTPC which for some reason lets me access my desktop files.
The laptop is not really an issue. ONce I enter the new password I can access files on the desktop and print no problem. I guess the 2 issues are...
1) the random changing of the network password
2) the inability to access networked files FROM the desktop. The reverse seems to work flawlessly.....

I recently got a data plan for my HTC One S. The wireless hotspot that came with it will work on my family's iPods, iPad, and our family laptop, but not on my Toshiba laptop with Windows 8. I have tried my dad's iPhone's wireless hotspot, and it works on my laptop. When I try my hotspot, my laptop will connect to it, but it will only give me limited access, meaning that no pages on the internet will load. What may be wrong with my laptop or phone?

I've recently made the move to 8 on my laptop and actually really like it. Now I've got an ubuntu 13.04 server with some samba shares set up that are completely visible on my Windows 8 laptop but when I try to access them I get Access Denied and it asks for my credentials again. I'm 1000% sure the details are correct, and I'm also sure it's a client side issue. I say this because there are 2 other PC's in my household, a win7 laptop and win7 desktop, both of which can access the shares when supplying the same credentials I do for my Windows 8 laptop.

recently, i just changed my laptop's OS to Windows 8 from Vista. My laptop is Compaq Presario F700 and it was originally Vista. But somehow, my laptop cannot access WiFi anymore so right now im using our PC. Also, when i go to PC Settings-->Wireless it says that "No wireless devices are available". I tried downloading a wireless LAN driver in this site: [Broadcom Wireless LAN Driver for Microsoft Windows 8 | HP Support] since Compaq is also from the Hewlett-Packard Company(hp).but after installing it, nothing changed. what should i do?

My Windows 8 laptop is having some WiFi connection issues.
Basically what happens is that every 5-20 minutes I cannot access the internet on browsers and the wifi connection is listed as "Limited".
The laptop: ASUS Vivobook S200E
The WiFi: Sky wireless router (no idea about model, it's almost two years old) But what I will say is that my Windows 7 laptop never skips a beat on this network, nor does my wife's Mac, nor do our 2 Android tablets, the iPad, the iPhone, the Android phone, and various devices that our friends connect when they come round. Literally no other device has any problems on this network, so I know (by the process of elimination) the Windows 8 laptop is the one with the problem.
In order to fix the issue I have to disconnect from the network, wait about 30 sec and reconnect again.

I use SkyDrive as my cloud storage and have 5GB of files in it.
But I want it to be IN THE CLOUD and hidden, not accesible to everyone using my laptop and not duplicate copies of the files in my hard disk (actually triplicate copies).
For example, let's say my 3GB music collection. I keep a copy in my hard disk within "My Music", a copy in the cloud in Skydrive, but now I have a third copy in my hard disk within the Skydrive folder, which I didn't want and I wasn't asked about.
Microsoft assumed I want this third copy for some reason and downloaded everything automatically to this Skydrive folder. Great.
So, the first thing I do is uninstalling Skydrive, if I want to upload something I do it via browser, but the folder and copy of my files is still there.
My question is, can I delete those files, my music collection and so on without deleting at the same time the copy in the cloud? I mean, if I delete them here they will be deleted in the cloud too?

well i created a homegroup for my 4 pc's, but with the last one i get the message that the Revo user changed the password.
A user wanting to join the homegroup cannot change the password......normally.
To restart from scratch, i led everyone leaving the homegroup at least i did that since all 4 hardly are used at one time.
Now the only thing i can do is to join a homegroup, while there is no homegroup....
So i type in a password and get the message "there is no homegroup".
when troubleshooting, i get the message that i did not join a homegroup, thus am no member.

I just purchased a new laptop with windows 8.1. I previously had two laptops and a desktop all running windows 7 and all connected to my network wirelessly. I had a homegroup set up on the desktop that works fine for all windows 7 machines, but I cannot get the new 8.1 machine to connect to it. The new machine sees that the homegroup is there but after I put in the password it says it no longer can find the homegroup.
I tried to run the homegroup troubleshooter and got a vague response about network problems, but no problems were detected by the network troubleshooter. I've also tried creating a local user instead of logging in with a Microsoft account but got the same message when I tried to connect.

I have two Windows 8 computers. On one of them (which says "private network"), I easily created a homegroup. On the other (which also says "private network"), I am unable to join the homegroup. Whenever I connect to the network, it searches and says "There is no homegroup on this network" and displays "Create Homegroup" in the Network and Sharing Center. However, when I attempt to create the homegroup, it says "Can't create a homegroup on this computer". If I leave the homegroup on the working computer, it still says "Create Homegroup" in the Network and Sharing Center and I am still unable to create the homegroup. Microsoft has worked on this for five hours and is unable to find a solution.

Want my Windows 8.1 computer to join my HomeGroup which currently consists of my Win 7 desktop and Win 7 laptop.
In Network and Sharing Center it sees the HomeGroup and says "Available to Join". I try to join by inputting the password and after a minute it says "Windows no longer detects a homegroup on this network...."
Why is this happening? What to do? What is the point of having multiple computers if you can't join them.
I also see that I can't even access the other computer through network. It shows both computers yet when I click on one it says its not accessible, I don't have permissions, etc. I have done nothing to change anything. Why can't I see other computers on my own network? On my two Win 7 computers it was as simple as could be. Why is this Win 8.1 giving me trouble?

My main PC is a desktop running Windows 7 and my homegroup was set up on this PC. I have a laptop running Windows 8 and joined the homegroup - seemingly successfully as the control panel indicates that it is in the group.
On the W7 desktop. The homegroup icon lists the laptop and allows me to access the laptop files. The network icon lists both the desktop and the laptop. I could also access the laptop files this way, but do not need to as I can access them via the homegroup icon.
On the Windows 8 laptop. The homegroup icon just lists the laptop user name and then the laptop itself. The desktop is not listed. The network icon lists both the laptop and the desktop. This allows me to access the desktop files, but I would prefer to access them via the the homegroup icon.

I have a Samsung Series 9 13in laptop running windows 8, and I'm attempting to stream video to my xbox 360 (it's one of the new, "slim" ones). I've read you need your homegroup set up in order to facilitate this, but I'm having nothing but trouble with it.
When I try to change any settings on the homegroup, most of the settings are greyed out, and the ones a can change reset as soon as I do it.
Screenshot is here: [URL] ....
How do I enable these settings? Any tips for streaming from Windows 8 to xbox?
