Maintenance :: 8.1 Boot Time Slower Than Win 7 Or Vista
Jul 5, 2013I had noticed 8.0 was slower booting than 7 or Vista. It is on a different HD so never bothered timing it.
Now I have 8.1 on the same HD as 7 and Vista. Here you go:
Win7 partition1 :
Win 8.1 partition 2:
Vista partition 3 :
I am not using hybrid boot - and have no interest in doing so.
There isn't anything extra in 8.1. startup - there is actually more in win7 startup ( just clipdiary).

Feb 13, 2013I dual boot with win 7 and win 8. I have faster download speed when i'm in win 7 than when i'm in win 8. Obviously my router wireless settings is the same for both OS. I Googled this and it seems that it's a problem for a lot of users.If it's a question of updating drivers, my laptop is an Acer and i checked their website and they only have drivers for win 7. Could i change win 8 drivers with the win 7 one? Would that work? Are there settings in win 8 that i should check? I have a 6mbps connection and when i check my connection speed at Speedtest.Net i get about 5.25 mbps when i'm in win 7, but i get about 1.65 mbps when i'm in win 8. What is causing such a big difference in speed?

Apr 8, 2014I just built a new system around the AMD FX 9590 on an Asus MB with 32GB of RAM. I excitedly decided to run a benchmark (in this case, Novabench) on the new system once I got all my other programs loaded. Imagine my shock and dismay when my "super system" posted HALF the total score of my 4-year old Phenom! I opened Task Manager, focusing on the CPU, and ran the tests again. It never budged from 1.5GHz. I understand it running at a lower frequency since when not under load, but in this case, it should have jumped up to the full 4.7GHz for the tests. And strangely, my Samsung SSD only recorded 41MB/s, where as the same SSD in my older system registered something like 150MB/s.

Oct 8, 2013I just installed a new wireless ac adapter and I do get a 1.3Gbps connection to my router. However when I test this connection by transferring some large files I get about 350Mbps for sending and 600 Mbps for receiving. When I transfer the same files with a 1Gbps wired connection I get about 970Mbps for sending (I think that includes some caching) and 760 Mbps for receiving.
Are there some options in Windows 8.1 Pro that can be set to get better wireless performance?
Maintenance :: Sound Distorted And Computer Running Slower Than Usual?
Jun 26, 2014Lately my computer has been distorting sounds and been going slower than it used to. When I restart the computer, the amount of distortions/small sizzling sounds is at a minimum, but it increases as I continue to use the computer. I googled how to fix this and one of the suggestions was to run a system file checker. The result of the scan was that I have some corrupted files that the computer could not remove. I also go a sfcdetails.txt file that showed all the information in the scan. How to find the corrupted files/what I should do to remove the files. I have attached the sfcdetails.txt file and a screen shot of the SFC results right from the command prompt.

I haven't played with the new 8.1 to know for sure but it does seem a bit slower, think its probably lack of ram?

I tried formatting c dive and re installed OS and all, I tried even windows 7, but my problem is not solved, I tried ipconfig cmd command and many, but none of them worked for me.... I forgot tell something, I can connect to the proxy from a 10 rooms after my room,with the same signal strength... but not from my room....

May 8, 2014I bought 2 years ago an HP 2000 NOTEBOOK PC, it came with windows 8 and when i turned it on today it was like new, there-s nothing left, except some programs in my desktop, but they are like new (example: when i opened word it asked my named)
Everything is like if i have never used it before, and I couldn't find any of my documents. I remember this happened like a year ago, but restarting it all came back to normality, but now it wont fix doing that
Any way to find my docx. by using the search options, and i have found them my docx. files, but i cant find a way to integrate them again to my system because if i search them from a windows folder i cant find any of them in my documents or my pictures, so this are my questions:
1) is there a way to put back my configuration, files, apps and everything as it was or i have to manually insert my documents in my system and forget my apps and configurations?
2) i read that i can use restore point and this wont affect my files, but if it goes wrong (the restore point option) is there a danger that i lost the opportunity to fix all my files and configuration? (I am asking this because i wont risk my work doing something that it might not be able to change). doing this restore point will be the solution to my problem or is this used for other typo of problems different than mine?
3) what do you think is the problem or the reason that this happens? I am worried that this has happened before and that it might happen again and as is very important to me i would want to prevent it.

Jun 5, 2013Randomly, my wifi disconnects many times a day (Limitted conectivity or ), sometimes every 5 minutes. I solve the problem temporarly by:
1.)Running the Troubleshoot of the wifi connection, and it resets the adapter automatically( and at the end of the troubleshotting it says: "WiFi doesnt Have a valid IP configuration, or sometimes The default gateway is not available")
2.)Sometimes the Troubleshooter cant reset the adapter, and I have to do it manually.
By resetting the adapter, the problem is solved only temporarily, because I have to do that mayby 20 times a day, sometimes more, sometimes less.
I use Windows 8 on Asus K55 VJ , Intel Centrino 2230 adapter with up to date driver.

Sep 16, 2013Just got a brand-new desktop. Unfortunately, I will not be able to use an ethernet cable BUT I have a USB network adapter. I know for sure that it works (I've used it on my laptop). The network adapter seems to have installed properly; I am able to pull up "Available Networks". However, when I try to connect to my home Wi-Fi and put in my password, it always says "connecting to the network is taking longer than usual" and then never connects. Multiple other devices in the house (smartphones, laptops, desktops) are all connecting to our network with no problems.
I've tried all of the Windows troubleshooters and wizards --- didn't work.
I've tried changing the wireless network channel from 6 to 8 --- didn't work.
I've tried netsh winsock reset catalog and netsh int ip reset reset.log hit in the command prompt --- didn't work.
It now shows that it has "limited" connection...but I cannot pull anything up in the browser. What the troubleshooter is telling me now is: "Wi-Fi does not have a valid IP configuration".

Jun 19, 2014The wifi is not working only on my laptop since 2 days! it was working before and it still is working with all other gadgets and other laptops just not working with my HP laptop.it installed some windows update couple of days back.
I have tried
netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)
netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)"
I have also tried restoring to the last recovery point. Nothing has worked so far.

Blue screen reads:

The BCD is missing some required info.

I don't have an install/repair cd/dvd, and I don't have my product key - since its on the BIOS and is unretrievable. I want to save ALL my files ... All I tried so far is to get into the BOOT by pressing F2 and switched it from UEFI to Legacy only it asks for BOOT disk...

Mar 31, 2013I recently got windows 8 and have found it to be rather volatile. I use WiFi in my house on my desktop Intel PC and my computer strangely sometimes works to get to the internet and sometimes it doesn't coming up with connection limited and after troubleshooting it "doesn't have a valid ip configuration". Ive tried the netsh winsock and the ip reset commands in command prompt (admin) and nothing happens i'm really at a loss. According to some people A/V programs can mess stuff up so i uninstalled them.

Jul 11, 2014I'm having trouble with the environment configuration on my new Windows 8 machine, I don't remember running into problems like this on 7, but I can't seem to find much useful online..
I have 4 dll files that need to go into the WindowsSystem32 folder in order for one of our applications to run. This is done through an Advanced Installer package I created, which will not allow the installation unless the user has administrative rights (it deals with Windows Services as well). One of the steps is to copy these 4 dll files, which it apparently does without any errors.
Herein lies the problem.. Technically, the files do indeed exist, as seen in the Bash shell screenshot below:
While they are quite simply not visible through either Explorer or command prompt, even when run as an elevated command prompt. The example screenshot below shows me trying to copy one of these files into the folder. Notice the overwrite file warning and the file listing behind it.
In the above shot, I had already figured out that copying the jacob-1.15-M4-x86.dll dll using the elevated command prompt seems to work, it shows in explorer and the applications that depend on it load fine. How could a file be copied into the folder that no Windows tool can see?
Boot Configuration Is Missing Or Contains Errors
Apr 9, 2013Firstly I created a partition of 1 GB on my 128GB OCZ Agility 3
Then I used bitlocker to encrypt it, and then for some reason when I tried to reboot the computer after doing the aforementioned, I get the message that windows cant boot, because the boot configuration is missing or conatins errors
I dont see how BitLocker and Disk Management can screw something up so much so that they either deleted or encrypted my boot config rendering me unable to boot up the computer.
What I did was shrinking the c:drive by 1000mb then formatted and partitioned those 1000 mb into a new drive. Secondly I encrypted the 1gig with Bitlocker with a short 12-character password.
I am now unable to boot up my laptop.
Reset To Default Theme / Configuration?
Jul 12, 2014So I created a brand new user in Windows 8 using my MSA. And I set it to set up as a new PC so that it wouldn't carry over themes or any settings from the previous computer. But as soon as I signed in, it had all of my old settings, themes, and configurations from my old computer.
So how do I set it so that it goes back to all the default settings like a brand new user logging into Windows for the first time?

When I tried to connect to a wireless router,it shows connected but could not browse even. Troubleshooting gives a message that "WiFi does not have a valid IP configurations" or "Problem with wireless adopter and access point" or "Network cable is not properly plugged in". I contacted Lenovo chat support and tried re-installing the latest drivers, but couldn't solve the problem. i still couldn't connect to the wireless network properly.

Problem:
New Toshiba notebook connects to Verizon router without difficulty, but cannot connect to DLINK or CISCO without "LIMITED" usage (IP configuration error) [With a lot of reset, renew and Windows 8 troubleshooting it will connect to the DLINK for about an hour, but the magic must be repeated after an hour or so]
History:
4 other Notebooks connect succesfully to any of the 3 access points
3 Phones connect succesfully to any of the 3 access points
2 Tablets connect succesfully to any of the 3 access points
Reason for DLINK or Cisco Connection:
Verizon router is outside of the local network containing shared drives.

PC Workstation - Ethernet Doesn't Have Valid IP Configuration?
Feb 4, 2014I have a brand new PC workstation.
Everything was fine, until recently, when I turn on my PC, I don't get an immediate internet connection. This is happening nearly everytime now with some frequency.
I reset the router/modem and everything is fine after that, so all is good.
But it is still frustrating. I get, "Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration".
Following are screenshots of my 'ipconfig' and 'Network Connection Status' before (unsuccessful) and after (successful) internet access:
You will see from the above that there is certainly something different with the data...
Incidentally, I did find a nice youtube 'tutorial' in relation to this subject title about manually configurating the settings:
I haven't tried this yet and that is probably down to the fact that I can't find my alternate DNS server setting (the very last box to fill in - watch the video and you will know what I mean) ???
Boot Configuration Data For PC Is Missing / Errors
Aug 7, 2013Last night I set Acronis Disk Director to merge two partitions on my C drive. I had an unnallocated 100mb that used to be partitioned as system reserved, but I deleted that partition as it was not needed. So I made a new partition out of that unallocated space and set it to merge with my primary partition on my c drive. It restarted my computer and 40% through, showed an error and restarted quickly. Now I get the following message when attempting to boot my computer:

Status: 0xc0000225
Info: The Boot Configuration Data for your PC is missing or contains errors.
The second partition, that I attempted to merge, now has 1mb of space on it. Whenever I try to run chkdsk on the primary partition, it says that the disk structure is corrupt and unreadable. I need my c drive recovered.
