I'm putting together a laptop with a Celeron 1.1ghz. I have 3GB memory, with option to go up to 8GB. I have an identicle laptop with win7x64 and 8 gb ram with the 1.5 Celeron. I haven't played with the new 8.1 to know for sure but it does seem a bit slower, think its probably lack of ram?

Now I have 8.1 on the same HD as 7 and Vista. Here you go:

I am not using hybrid boot - and have no interest in doing so.
There isn't anything extra in 8.1. startup - there is actually more in win7 startup ( just clipdiary).
I dual boot with win 7 and win 8. I have faster download speed when i'm in win 7 than when i'm in win 8. Obviously my router wireless settings is the same for both OS. I Googled this and it seems that it's a problem for a lot of users.If it's a question of updating drivers, my laptop is an Acer and i checked their website and they only have drivers for win 7. Could i change win 8 drivers with the win 7 one? Would that work? Are there settings in win 8 that i should check? I have a 6mbps connection and when i check my connection speed at Speedtest.Net i get about 5.25 mbps when i'm in win 7, but i get about 1.65 mbps when i'm in win 8. What is causing such a big difference in speed?

I excitedly decided to run a benchmark (in this case, Novabench) on the new system once I got all my other programs loaded. Imagine my shock and dismay when my "super system" posted HALF the total score of my 4-year old Phenom! I opened Task Manager, focusing on the CPU, and ran the tests again. It never budged from 1.5GHz. I understand it running at a lower frequency since when not under load, but in this case, it should have jumped up to the full 4.7GHz for the tests. And strangely, my Samsung SSD only recorded 41MB/s, where as the same SSD in my older system registered something like 150MB/s.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed a new wireless ac adapter and I do get a 1.3Gbps connection to my router. However when I test this connection by transferring some large files I get about 350Mbps for sending and 600 Mbps for receiving. When I transfer the same files with a 1Gbps wired connection I get about 970Mbps for sending (I think that includes some caching) and 760 Mbps for receiving.
Are there some options in Windows 8.1 Pro that can be set to get better wireless performance?
Lately my computer has been distorting sounds and been going slower than it used to. When I restart the computer, the amount of distortions/small sizzling sounds is at a minimum, but it increases as I continue to use the computer. I googled how to fix this and one of the suggestions was to run a system file checker. The result of the scan was that I have some corrupted files that the computer could not remove. I also go a sfcdetails.txt file that showed all the information in the scan. How to find the corrupted files/what I should do to remove the files. I have attached the sfcdetails.txt file and a screen shot of the SFC results right from the command prompt.

Model Samsung 3505VC. I believe it might be to do with my graphics card as it is rated only 4.9 now on windows rating and was 5.7 before.

Also, after starting the computer, the menu is not directly shown up, first is this turning wi8 circle (like in the setup) and only about 30 sec. later comes the menu. I am using windows 8 enterprise, test version.
Have a question regarding "Local Account". I'm having problems connecting to the Win 8 laptop from Win 7 as it will not accept my sign in credentials. With that, am I to assume that this is because the credential aren't "Local", and thus this is what this is for???
It will not accept the "Microsoft" account I use to log into Win 8 laptop.
With that, if I choose to go with the "local account" can I easily switch back to the Microsoft one?
I had windows 7 and outlook express on it. The computer crashed. I had to get a whole new computer with windows 8 and just outlook. I have a folder with all my old outlook express emails in it but it is not compatible with outlook and I NEED an email in the old outlook express file. How the heck can I get this? When I try to open the old files it says " must be opened with outlook".

In a few days I will receive a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon with Windows 8 installed. And separately I will receive an OEM Win7. Win7 is certainly what I intend to use, and I had originally thought I would wipe out Windows 8 and install Win7. But now I am wondering if I can somehow preserve Windows 8 for occasional use. (I would have ordered the machine with Win7 but this is a refurbished machine.)
I would rather not have to understand UEFI. (I'm sure it would be interesting, I just have other things to do with my time.) And, although I do it sometimes, and will if I have to, I do not like diddling with BIOS settings.
I know that factory installed operating systems generally can't be moved to other machines. And I fear that the factory installed Windows 8 that I will receive may not even tolerate being installed, e.g., in a smaller partition or under something like VMware (another complication I'd like to avoid).

I purchased it from a digital superstore, like a market, rather than a regular PC store.
The device is set for Windows 7, although on purchase, I asked for Windows 8 to be installed.
Now, a BSOD has stopped me gaining access through refreshing, restarting, safe mode or any of the options available through the troubleshooting menu.
I retrieved my data using a SATA, and now wish to wipe the system of Windows 8, and avoid all the hassle it has brought me, returning to it's factory settings of W7.
I do not have a disk, or anything to do so. When I go through the menu on start-up, I click 'restore system' but I am then prompted for 'recovery mdeia or installation disk'.
Is it possible to just reset the whole PC and start from the day it left the factory?
If I need a disk to reset the original settings, where can I get it from and would simply loading it when prompted fix my problem?

I have 3 user accounts on my windows 8.1 laptop; 2 administrator types and 1 standard local account. While logged in using one of the admin user accounts or the local account, I can access the store app. However, when i log in using the other administrator account and try to access the store app, i just get the spinning circle and nothing happens. Is there something wrong with how one user account is set up that is causing the problem. Do I have to delete the user account and try re-establishing it.

i intend to use SkyDrive for the documents, and will use the mail app, or install Outlook on the tablet to have a copy of emails on it, but I am not sure how to make sure that contacts and calendar are synchronised on both machines. I use a local to UK mail provider (btinternet).

I have a fairly new Dell with windows 8.1 on it. Internet explorer stopped working all of a sudden the other day. No warning at all. When I open the desktop version, nothing happens at all. No tab, no pageload, nothing.I can click the gear and only file, safety, and compatibility view settings are available. I did the upgrade from win7 to Windows 8 x64. When I try to use wmp I get audio but no video. I have tried reinstalling my codecs and different codecs like sharks, klite etc. I have reinstalled my graphic drivers. I have tried add/remove features, but no look. Its the same with wmc. I can play videos with quicktime. I was going to try a refresh, but I have way to many programs to reinstall, and a Windows 8 inplace upgrade doesn't offer to keep my apps & settings.

Is it possible for me to use that same upgrade product key for Windows 8 Pro on 8.1 so I could have a Pro version of 8.1? The computer I originally did the upgrade on I am no longer using and is there a way to deactivate the license on that one so it could be used on the new computer I bought? Also I just want the extra's of the Pro version so does it matter it is the license for Windows 8 even though the new computer uses 8.1?
