Transfer User Files To New Windows 8 Laptop?
Mar 23, 2013
I was working on a windows 8 laptop and wanted to transfer user files to the new laptop. I pulled the drive from the Windows 8 laptop, plugged it into an open sata port on my windows 7 bench machine (which already contained the files to be transferred) and booted without problem. I assigned the windows 8 drive a letter and opened the drive. All the files of the Windows 8 drive were visible. I opened a directory off of the root, created a new directory and copied the files. No problem. I opened some of the image files and all looked well. I shut down the win7 box, pulled the Windows 8 drive and put it back in the laptop and it booted, no problem.
When I went looking for the files, they were no where to be found! Win 8 showed the "used space" as if the copy never happened. Thinking I made an error on the copy I shut down the Windows 8 laptop and pulled the drive, plugged it back into the win7 box and booted. The win7 boot detected "file corruption" on the volume in question and did some "orphan" recovering and a bunch of other stuff. When it finally finished and booted all the files copied were in a "found.000" directory. I took ownership and repeated. Funny thing is that while the win7 showed the drive with the expected 40gb of data taking up space, the windows 8 showed the "used space" as if the data wasnt even there? why as I try to copy the files from the win7 drive converted to a usb external directly into the Windows 8 laptop.

I recently bought a new Windows 8.1 computer to replace my old 8.1 laptop. I was going to use Windows Easy Transfer to transfer all my settings and files, but I accidentally (on my old computer) clicked "This is my new computer" and I cannot change it to old.

I plan to get a new Windows 8.1 laptop soon. I want it to have 8gb RAM and an internal 128gb SSD drive where I keep all the OS, driver and other system files. Then I want all my media files (documents, music, vids, etc) on an external USB 3.0 hard drive. I recognize that keeping files on an external drive may cause slow behavior in some situations. My my guess is that USB 3.0 is fast enough so this won't be a problem in most situations. And I plan to get an external drive that has USB 3.0.
I'm not a power user. I don't edit video or do fancy rendering or stuff like that. I just browse the net, create some docs and spreadsheets, listen to some music and watch some vids. I play around with Audacity once in a while and that's about it. I'm an average user.
So, any problems with keeping all my user files on an external drive?

I have been using an unelevated admin user account since installing win 8.1 pro and I've been having problems constantly (UAC nagging me, access denied when trying to kill processes and so on) and I decided I want to use the elevated admin account as my main. I understand security risks and convenience is more important to me as I don't have any sensitive information on my laptop. I was wondering if I can merge the user account I used until now, which has all my app settings, with the elevated admin user account and use that one from now on.

It looks like this PC can't run Windows 8.1. This might be because the Users or Program Files folder is being redirected to another partition."
By using the Customize feature of Windows Easy Transfer Wizard, I created a MIG transfer file, without selecting the user folders (such as Documents, Pictures or Video).
If the MIG file is copied to the C: drive, will the User Profile be created on the C: drive, when Easy Transfer is run?
I am guessing that the default User Folders will be created on the C drive, and then the locations can be changed to match the present physical location on my other partitions.

On the same computer. microsoft's shitty "online syncing" they managed to trick me into putting my actual name for the directory in C:/users etc. I want to change this, but apparently the only way is to create a completely new account on my computer. How can I create a duplicate with all the same settings?

My laptop is being replaced as it has a faulty motherboard (but still works). The new laptop will be identical.
Is there any way I can clone my hdd so that when the replacement arrives I can copy all the data onto that hdd without having to reinstall all my programs etc.
I know there are various cloning softwares available, but do they work? Are they any good? and most importantly are they idiot proof??
Any best way to achieve this data transfer to new machine.

I want to move all my data from my MacBook to a laptop with Windows 8. I have everything backed up on an external HD; when I plug the HD into the laptop, it's not recognized. I've tried transferring via WiFi, but the MacBook is not allowing that to happen. Is there anything I can do with my backup HD so that it is recognized by my new Windows 8 laptop?

Installed the latest 8.1.1 on a new machine and tried to use the Easy Windows Backup to restore my stuff, but I get this message "Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer files from Windows Vista or Windows XP".
Is there any way I can recover my files from the Easy Transfer Backup?

It appears the transfer files and settings is missing from windows 8.1, I don't use the so called Cloud, so I would guess the only way to move my Windows 8.1 installation to a new hard drive is to use the backup image app, or use a backup program. How to make it easier to move to a new hard drive in case of failure.

I am totally unhappy about windows 8. Many good features from earlier windows are missing such as -
1) You can not pin "Calculator" to the task bar. In earlier versions you could open the calculator, over other windows.
2) While scrolling to folders / files in Explorer or any software, the screen jumps abruptly to up or down.
3) While transferring Images from camera. You can not select part images for transfer along with renaming. This feature was available in Windows XP.

When I was on Windows 8, I transferred all my music from my old pc to my laptop's WMP without any probs. Upgraded to 8.1 and because of some issues I roll-backed to 8.00. I now have to re-transfer all my music from my old pc to my new one again. I can't transfer music from my old pc to WMP on 8.1, my music has been transferred into This PC/Music and it won't let me dragtcopymove it from there to WMP, Should I just delete it from This PC/Music and do another transfer?

In our office, we got a bunch of Windows 8 laptops/Desktops (Lenovo - T430s) but we don't use the license. We only use Win 7.
Is there a way for me to use OEM serial keys from those machines to other machines? IBM Desktops or Self Built PCs or other non IBM laptops?

I need to copy data from a drive which I removed from an old PC (was running XP but no longer bootable, all the data is still there and working though) to Windows 8, however it doesn't work as I expected at all as you need to go through all those permission hassles and in this case there are too many files to bother, and I can't use that Windows Easy Transfer as the old PC is not working, any other ways to go about this?

-tried over cloud, cloud upload failed and retried multiple times for same result.
-tried direct file transfer from pc to WinTablet and from AndroidTablet to WinTablet with the appropriate cables, both times neither device detected the other

I don't understand this at all. Why did they take away this VERY important function? You can no longer drag and drop pictures to and from dropbox to a folder on your computer! This is so aggravating that I feel like throwing my computer in the trash. I cannot use skydrive. It won't link to it and it won't let me transfer files to another location on my computer.
There is a "pictures" folder but it refuses to let me transfer files from skydrive or dropbox! This is extremely aggravating when trying to backup four years of vacation pictures. It also disables the drag and drop function from ANYTHING else: CDs, USB drives, hard drives. I'm so angry now that I might consider buying a used computer just to transfer the files.

I have an old HP laptop with W8.1 x64 which I have to replace. How can I transfer data to my new Asus (W8.1 x64 too) which has a very different hardware layout ?
I thought of retrieving the old "file history" on to the new rig but I'm afraid it would copy files that would make it unstable to to the hardware differences.

I bought a laptop, specifically the Samsung QX410-J01. The Laptop came pre-installed with Windows 7, and I upgraded to Windows 8 on 10/26/2012. I bought the Windows 8 Pro product key, downloaded, and upgraded to Windows 8.
Just last week my laptops Motherboard failed and my computer would no longer start up. The HDD works just fine though so all my files are safe. I decided I wanted to build my own PC and I am simply waiting on my case to arrive.
My question is I want to use Windows 8 on my new PC. The problem I am facing is I do not know how I am going to install Windows on my new machine. I do not want to purchase a new install disk and license since I have already paid for the OS. I can only think of two options and I am not sure if either of them are right.
1. Plug in my laptops hard drive into the new desktop. Run Windows 8.1 on that and use the new Terabyte hard drive I bought as a second hard drive.
2. Somehow put Windows 8.1 on a flash drive and install it from the flash drive onto the new blank hard drive. Then use the product key that I had purchased to activate the OS onto the new hard drive!
I really do not want to have to purchase Windows again, but if I must I guess I will. I believe there has to be a way I doubt after being a loyal Microsoft customer, switching to Windows Phone recently, and buying an Xbox One, that Microsoft will just say "Too bad, buy it again".

I have been trying (without success) to transfer my e-mail folder files from my old computer (Dell Inspiron 530 using Vista) to my new computer (Sony Vaio using Windows 8). The transfer is from Windows Mail to Windows Live Mail.
The recommended method on the old machine using a flash drive is as follows: File-Export-Messages-Microsoft Windows Mail-Select Folder (K:New Folder)-Next-Select Folders-Next.
At this point the folders should transfer to the flash drive. Unfortunately I keep getting and error message that says that "Export did complete successfully and Windows Mail was unable to export all messages" - (in fact only a few messages were transferred) The message then goes onto say that " your disk may not have enough space (it is a 32GB flash drive and has more than enough space!) or that some messages may be corrupted. Run disk clean-up or delete some files and try again". I have done this without improvement.
Another approach that was recommended was to find all of the e-mail files (.eml files) and copy them to the new computer via the flash drive. I can copy them to the flash drive without problem but am not sure how/where to import them into the C: drive of the new computer.

About half the time I use Windows Easy Transfer, it fails to transfer the setting in Outlook, which is a huge hassle... I back everything up, but I have problems with Outlook. I do the same thing every time and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't... very frustrating! No error messages or anything like that, it just doesn't put the account settings and folders back in Outlook...

Mother just got a new laptop, it has Windows 8, but with their new way of doing preinstalled games (IE... not having any, and having a list to download from) a few games we have on her old Windows 7 laptop aren't available to her, like the version of Solitaire it has and such.
Would it be feasible to take the preinstalled Windows 7 games and put them on Windows 8... would they still work?

So when I was installing Windows 8 Pro (which came as an upgrade from a previous version of Windows) I created an account. Let's call it "DC". During the upgrade Windows used up quite a lot of space for that account: about 25 GB.
Now when Windows 8 is installed I went into the Control Panel / Users and removed the "DC" account. I also made sure to check the box to remove all of its files.
But when I go the "C:UsersDC" folder on the hard drive, I see that the DC files are still there:
If I do it's properties it shows that it still takes 25 GB of space, that I want to reclaim. (I have a 256 GB SSD, so as you see I can't waste that much space!)
So I log in as a built-in administrator and try to delete those files (by deleting the "C:UsersDC" folder in Windows Explorer.) After a quick investigation it turns out that the most of the space is used up by the "Windows.old" file. But no matter what I do, it always results in this window:
I tried booting in a safe mode and it still gave me the same error. How to remove that "C:UsersDC" folder?

I was trying to locate some files in my user folders in Windows 8 I was looking for the app data files to restore my email from an old version to a new clean install of the client. I could not find the folder although I knew it existed as this is where the app is storing my email, so I figured it was hidden. I started to look for the setting I knew in 7 that would allow you to see hidden files when you ran the folder properties. The only thing I saw anywhere about hidden files was on the first page of the properties where it says read only and hidden so I checked the box and told it to apply. (I know, stupid thing to do since I did not understand what it was doing. This is so unlike me) Now I do not have any user folders and not much works. How can I restore my user files?

I have been using windows 8 for just about a week now. I have made a new admin local account and have deleted the old admin local account but when I go into C:/Users the deleted user account files are still there. When I go to delete these files, a message comes up telling me that I don't have the permission to delete these files. I have read online and searched alot but came across no fix. I have tried turning of windows features, then I tried deleting the files through command prompt using rd /s /q but still no luck. I tried this method using safe mode command prompt but still no luck.
