I plan to buy a new computer using win 8.1 I currently have a computer using win 8.1 I want to transfer my files from the old one to the new one. Win 8.1 does not have easy transfer so how can I do this. Is there a way to use an external hard drive?
View 4 RepliesI have been trying (without success) to transfer my e-mail folder files from my old computer (Dell Inspiron 530 using Vista) to my new computer (Sony Vaio using Windows 8). The transfer is from Windows Mail to Windows Live Mail.
The recommended method on the old machine using a flash drive is as follows: File-Export-Messages-Microsoft Windows Mail-Select Folder (K:New Folder)-Next-Select Folders-Next.
At this point the folders should transfer to the flash drive. Unfortunately I keep getting and error message that says that "Export did complete successfully and Windows Mail was unable to export all messages" - (in fact only a few messages were transferred) The message then goes onto say that " your disk may not have enough space (it is a 32GB flash drive and has more than enough space!) or that some messages may be corrupted. Run disk clean-up or delete some files and try again". I have done this without improvement.
Another approach that was recommended was to find all of the e-mail files (.eml files) and copy them to the new computer via the flash drive. I can copy them to the flash drive without problem but am not sure how/where to import them into the C: drive of the new computer.
I recently bought a new Windows 8.1 computer to replace my old 8.1 laptop. I was going to use Windows Easy Transfer to transfer all my settings and files, but I accidentally (on my old computer) clicked "This is my new computer" and I cannot change it to old.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI bought a program that will transfer data from my old computer (Vista) to my new computer (Windows 8) I plugged them both in. I had the screen on the Vista computer and it seemed to be working in transferring my stuff. I wanted until the lights on the new computer stopped blinking. Then I disconnected the Vista computer and hooked up all my wires from the Vista onto the Windows 8 computer. I can't find any of the data I supposedly transferred. Where would it be?
So now I think I better do the transfer thing again. So I take the old computer and plug it in (without monitor as I only have 1) No power. It's plugged in but the old computer won't go on. Now, I'm panicking... all my data, documents, spread sheets, genealogy are all in the old computer.
Now I do have backups... portable disks.... I see the info (or some of it) on the backup disks but how do I transfer it onto the Windows 8 computer? Theses were backedup from the old Vista computer.
How can I transfer all my favorites on win 7 internet to my new computer which has win 8. I actually transferred my files from the old computer to the new computer, however, the favorites bar in IE7 did not transfer to the IE8 on the new computer. I hope I won't have to individually set all the favorites on the new computer.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Windows 7 computer with Lotus 8.5 on it and I need to transfer Lotus 8.5 and all it's files and emails and the encryption key to the Windows 8 computer. I do not think that Windows 8 will recognize Lotus 8.5 so I had the idea to partition the Windows 8 computer and install Windows 7 on one of the partitions thus making it a dual boot computer, then install Lotus 8.5 to the Windows 7 partition. My problem is Windows 8 is already installed on the computer and Windows website warns not to install the older operating system second.
Windows website warns, "You must install the older operating system first, and then install the more recent operating system. If you don't (for example, if you install Windows Vista on a computer already running Windows 7), you can render your system inoperable. This can happen because earlier versions of Windows don't recognize the startup files used in more recent versions of Windows and can overwrite them." What should I do? I have found some information on installing Windows 7 as a second operating system on a Windows 8 computer thus creating a Dual Boot computer and giving you the best of both worlds and full app compatibility as some of your Windows 7 applications may not be supported in a Windows 8 environment. It appears the transfer files and settings is missing from windows 8.1, I don't use the so called Cloud, so I would guess the only way to move my Windows 8.1 installation to a new hard drive is to use the backup image app, or use a backup program. How to make it easier to move to a new hard drive in case of failure.

Detail: Need to transfer file from CD to Win8.1 tablet. Steps tried:
-extracted files from CD to .SFX archive and added a copy to PC and Tablet (android4.4)
-tried over cloud, cloud upload failed and retried multiple times for same result.
-tried direct file transfer from pc to WinTablet and from AndroidTablet to WinTablet with the appropriate cables, both times neither device detected the other
-tried file transfer over homegroup, gave error message about "access denied" even after giving access on both devices
-tried email but .sfx was too large (almost 800MB)
-tried over Bluetooth on both devices (PC and android) again transfer failed
-tried over WiFi connection, failed access denied
-tried over Ethernet cable but only PC has Ethernet port.
I bought a laptop, specifically the Samsung QX410-J01. The Laptop came pre-installed with Windows 7, and I upgraded to Windows 8 on 10/26/2012. I bought the Windows 8 Pro product key, downloaded, and upgraded to Windows 8.
Just last week my laptops Motherboard failed and my computer would no longer start up. The HDD works just fine though so all my files are safe. I decided I wanted to build my own PC and I am simply waiting on my case to arrive.
My question is I want to use Windows 8 on my new PC. The problem I am facing is I do not know how I am going to install Windows on my new machine. I do not want to purchase a new install disk and license since I have already paid for the OS. I can only think of two options and I am not sure if either of them are right.
1. Plug in my laptops hard drive into the new desktop. Run Windows 8.1 on that and use the new Terabyte hard drive I bought as a second hard drive.
2. Somehow put Windows 8.1 on a flash drive and install it from the flash drive onto the new blank hard drive. Then use the product key that I had purchased to activate the OS onto the new hard drive!
I really do not want to have to purchase Windows again, but if I must I guess I will. I believe there has to be a way I doubt after being a loyal Microsoft customer, switching to Windows Phone recently, and buying an Xbox One, that Microsoft will just say "Too bad, buy it again".
I was working on a windows 8 laptop and wanted to transfer user files to the new laptop. I pulled the drive from the Windows 8 laptop, plugged it into an open sata port on my windows 7 bench machine (which already contained the files to be transferred) and booted without problem. I assigned the windows 8 drive a letter and opened the drive. All the files of the Windows 8 drive were visible. I opened a directory off of the root, created a new directory and copied the files. No problem. I opened some of the image files and all looked well. I shut down the win7 box, pulled the Windows 8 drive and put it back in the laptop and it booted, no problem.
When I went looking for the files, they were no where to be found! Win 8 showed the "used space" as if the copy never happened. Thinking I made an error on the copy I shut down the Windows 8 laptop and pulled the drive, plugged it back into the win7 box and booted. The win7 boot detected "file corruption" on the volume in question and did some "orphan" recovering and a bunch of other stuff. When it finally finished and booted all the files copied were in a "found.000" directory. I took ownership and repeated. Funny thing is that while the win7 showed the drive with the expected 40gb of data taking up space, the windows 8 showed the "used space" as if the data wasnt even there? why as I try to copy the files from the win7 drive converted to a usb external directly into the Windows 8 laptop.
I don't understand this at all. Why did they take away this VERY important function? You can no longer drag and drop pictures to and from dropbox to a folder on your computer! This is so aggravating that I feel like throwing my computer in the trash. I cannot use skydrive. It won't link to it and it won't let me transfer files to another location on my computer.
There is a "pictures" folder but it refuses to let me transfer files from skydrive or dropbox! This is extremely aggravating when trying to backup four years of vacation pictures. It also disables the drag and drop function from ANYTHING else: CDs, USB drives, hard drives. I'm so angry now that I might consider buying a used computer just to transfer the files.
The computer I am using is a Dell Inspiron M5040 laptop.
I got a Samsung 840 Pro Series SSD to replace my HDD, and used the Samsung Software that came with it to image my OS over to the SSD. It had an error at first, so I removed my antivirus program and ran it again, and it worked.
Everything works pretty much the same, except for noticeable differences in search and Internet webpage access.
If I search in Explorer, the searches are fast and prompt. But if I search with the regular search charm ( WIN+S ), searches are more than 7x slower than on the previous HDD. Also, webpages a quick to load on different computers (not the internet speed, in other words). But this computer had slow loads, and now the loading is even slower on the new SSD.
Things I've tried:
Multiple SFC scans - all say there is some files that could not be fixed All windows updates installed enabled Trimm, updated SSD firmware, ran Windows SSD optimization, optimized computer for SSD use Reset Internet Explorer Rebuilt index
I'm thinking of ditching this slower laptop in favor of something... anything nearby. Regretting either imaging to another drive, or using Samsung to do it.
I used the Easy Windows Backup on my old machine (running vista), saved to an external hard drive. Installed the latest 8.1.1 on a new machine and tried to use the Easy Windows Backup to restore my stuff, but I get this message "Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer files from Windows Vista or Windows XP".
Is there any way I can recover my files from the Easy Transfer Backup?
I am totally unhappy about windows 8. Many good features from earlier windows are missing such as -
1) You can not pin "Calculator" to the task bar. In earlier versions you could open the calculator, over other windows.
2) While scrolling to folders / files in Explorer or any software, the screen jumps abruptly to up or down.
3) While transferring Images from camera. You can not select part images for transfer along with renaming. This feature was available in Windows XP.
About half the time I use Windows Easy Transfer, it fails to transfer the setting in Outlook, which is a huge hassle... I back everything up, but I have problems with Outlook. I do the same thing every time and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't... very frustrating! No error messages or anything like that, it just doesn't put the account settings and folders back in Outlook...

Is it possible for me to use that same upgrade product key for Windows 8 Pro on 8.1 so I could have a Pro version of 8.1? The computer I originally did the upgrade on I am no longer using and is there a way to deactivate the license on that one so it could be used on the new computer I bought? Also I just want the extra's of the Pro version so does it matter it is the license for Windows 8 even though the new computer uses 8.1?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have two laptops made by the same manufacturer and same year, but one is a dual core laptop with an SSD harddrive and the other is a quad core laptop with a regular hard drive. Both laptops run Windows 8.
I would like to transfer my programs and files from the dual core to the quad core. However, obviously the quad core has different hardware.
I am wondering if I simply remove the SSD from the dual core and put it into the quad core (replacing the quad's primary hard drive with the SSD) and simply boot up the quad core, would that be sufficient? Will the quad core recognize the hardware mismatch and automatically correct the drivers, while keeping my programs and files?
Or is there some other, efficient way to make the transfer?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running into an issue I have never seen. I had a friends laptop that i was upgrading from windows 7. I took out his hard drive and plugged it into my windows 8 machine and backed up the files to my pc and then formatted and installed windows 8.
Once I got it all back up i setup the user profile Matt and then took the hard drive back out the laptop and plugged it into my machine to copy the (my docs, my music, my photos, etc.) back to the laptop drive. So i sat and waited for 2 hours while it copied 100GB back to the laptop drive. Once it finished i plugged the drive back into the laptop and when i booted into windows 8, non of the files appear... Nothing!
The computer doesnt even register that i copied 100GB onto the hard drive. It shows only that i am using 30GB of the 500GB drive which is not the case. When i took the drive out and plugged it into my machine to test, everything showed up as it was. So I confirmed i did copy the 100GB to the laptop drive. But when i put it back into the laptop, nothing shows up...
What could be causing this to happen? Is is because when i had it hooked to my desktop (windows 8) it was using my profile and hid the files?
When i goto the bottom left start square that pops up.. and i right click on it. None of the (computer management, device manager, event viewer, etc.) options don't appear. Could the profile be corrupt?
My computer started freezing while downloading large files in uTorrent, About 10 minutes after starting uTorrent the PC starts to be really really slow and 1 minute after it freezes, only restarted/shutdown solve the problem, I've been using uTorrent for years and never had this problem, I mean it happens when I download a 15GB movie, but two months ago I downloaded a 170GB TV series and no problems were with that.
So I thought maybe its a problem in the HDD (not in the space, I have aprox. 150GB free in C and 220GB in D), I don't really know what to do.
Using the sfc command, I found some corrupted windows files but it was unable to repair them... Is there any way I can repair the files without having to reset or refresh my computer and lose everything I installed?
I found something called DISM, but when I used it, it said unable to find source files or something... I found my recover partitions, but they don't have drive letters. Anything I can do?

I had windows 7 and outlook express on it. The computer crashed. I had to get a whole new computer with windows 8 and just outlook. I have a folder with all my old outlook express emails in it but it is not compatible with outlook and I NEED an email in the old outlook express file. How the heck can I get this?
